If your partner wanted a dog but you didn’t, what would you do?

Okay, sounds like I’m going against the grain here but hear me out… If he’s willing to accept all or at least the vast majority of the responsibility, then get the dog. Sounds to me like your partner is pretty convinced he wants one, so lay it all out for him. He has to take at least a month off of work initially for potty training. Get up early every day to walk the dog before work. Hire a dog walker to take the dog out at mid-day when you’re both working. The walk the dog every evening. (Most dogs need a minimum of 90 minutes per day. Depending on the individual and the breed… MINIMUM) Outside of walking, it’ll need between 20-30 minutes of training - unless he knows nothing about dog training. In which case he needs to hire a professional trainer. Explain Kennels & boarding fees for when you want to go on holidays, pet insurance, food costs, vet fees (insurance doesn’t cover everything). Crate, leash, bowls, toys, treats etc. If he’s the kind of man who is willing to do all of that, can afford it and you believe he is responsible enough to actually do it - then frankly he isn’t asking for your permission. He just wants you to be onboard because he loves you. Otherwise, he’s looking for shared responsibility and if you’re not on board, absolutely do not get the dog. Good luck! ❤️

Parents, what are you charging for board/ rent?

I already explained how we are already doing this - so putting the money aside secretly would be a nice surprise. Charging her monthly “digs” for living with us while working also teaches her responsibility and if she knew I was saving it for her. It makes the return less exciting and it makes paying it in the first place less painful… the pain of paying bills is a lesson worth learning. No, I fully appreciate the value in the lessons she needs to learn, I’ll manage without a psychiatrist or an American shrink (at least on this particular subject, I’m sure there is plenty other low hanging fruit in that regard 🤣)

I don’t agree. Teaching her to save and to be responsible for her bills at the same time is a win win if you ask me - then eventually she’s going to want to buy her first home and who’s she going to ask for the deposit? I can say - well I knew this day would come, so every penny you paid in bills have been sitting in an ISA earning interest, so here you go. If you can’t find the negative in that, you need to see a shrink.

She is learning about saving already - she chooses how much of her money goes into her account from Xmas bday etc. we suggest ~50% unless there’s something specific she wants to use it for, or more if she’s already loaded 🤣 I’m not sure if her bill money savings will be kept secret tho… I’ll have to ponder it.

That’s exactly my plan, my daughters only 7 at the moment, but I’ve been putting £100 / month away for her since the day she was born - plus 50% of all the money she gets for Xmas birthdays etc. Then when she’s of age, she can avoid paying bills by staying in school, but once she leaves school, she starts paying and it’ll get added to her ISA.

How did you get over your mid life crisis?

From a married 38 year old with kids a dog and far too many responsibilities to mention, I can tell you the grass isn’t always greener… If we were to change shoes right now, I’d make bank and travel light, working remotely while travelling. The bonus to this is you might just meet someone’s, if not, at least you’ll get to experience all the things I won’t because I couldn’t afford to when I was younger and now that I can, I don’t have the freedom. It’s a big world out there’s go look at it.

How do you feel about a caravan on your neighbour’s driveway?

Look up the cost of storing the caravan off-site. In my area, it’s about £30 / month. Then offer to pay your neighbour half the cost of storage. This would go a long way towards an amicable outcome. And if it’s not worth £15 / month to you, how outraged can you possibly be if you’re not willing to part with the cost of a case of cheap beer to alleviate yourself of the issue.

What are your plans for when you retire?

I plan on dying before I retire. Most of my life’s pleasures will assure it. Putting money in a pension “tax fee” is a con, you still get heavily taxed on it when you take it out and don’t even think about trying to get it all out! 🤣 “Tax free lump sum” sounds great until you realise the cost of an annuity is obscene and chances are, you’ll die with more than the tax value left in the account. “But your next of kin get it” - yea, after tax 🤣 I’ll buy property under a company in my kids name and die when I’m ready with my money where it’s meant to be. Opened her an account when she was born and been stuffing it with cash ever since. Maybe I’ll survive longer than I expect and have to live off rental income, state pension and company pension. Sounds good to me. Who’s coming fishing? 🎣
