Every year I go to the local Cheese & Chilli Festival and try around 80 different hot sauces, marinades, jams, ketchups, and mayos. I'll buy about 8-10 of them and those are our primary condiments for the rest of the year.

I remember when the crimes of Ian Watkins of Lostprophets came out, a load of people said his band mates must have known. As someone who interviewed the other band mates (I was a music journalist who wasn't important enough to be given time with Ian) they clearly looked at him like a colleague they barely spoke to outside of work. Some of them didn't seem to like him much and made little effort to hide it. I'm not pretending I knew them well, but I really didn't get the impression that he was someone they had a high enough opinion of that they would cover up for. But in a lot of people's eyes there were now questions.

Why do you think there are many small towns/villages in Europe that are dying, but not in The UK?

My sister lives deep down into Cornwall. When I visit her in Winter, we see villages that basically cease to exist for months. Everything is shut or boarded up, barely more than the odd dog walker. Then I see the same place in Summer and it's packed.

The Spotify playlist for acts playing at my local venues. Spotify have a tool where you can ask it to build a playlist based on your description that updates every week. So I gave it the links to the relevant listings pages on the venue websites and asked it for a playlist featuring those. I tweaked it to focus more on original artists, add up to three songs per act, and put them nearer the beginning. For tribute bands, just put one song from the original artist near the end. I have found many artists playing the area this way and have bought seven or eight local gig tickets as a result.

Ones who've been to Spain did you wish you spoke any Spanish? Should I learn Spanish?"

Posted by UDAAAAA@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 83 comments

AndyVale@reddit

Considering all of your posts used to be in Spanish, I imagine you'll be fine. In general it's worth learning a few phrases to be polite and also help you get the jist of signs and notices without needing to get your phone out to check. But anyone working customer facing roles in hospitality in the popular areas will speak English. Every major museum, gallery, or attraction will have guides in English. The average young person on the street in a city will be able to speak enough to get by. Learn what you can, but it shouldn't be a blocker to visiting if you don't know much.

A lot of companies have blogs to share news, thoughts on their industry, or answer common questions (this is so they are easier to find on Google etc.). So, a business that sells logistics services to small food businesses might put up an article explaining how tariffs or border checks in certain regions might affect their exports and what they can do about it. It may conveniently loop in how that business helps in certain scenarios too.

Once had someone reach out to me about doing some freelance blogging around 7-8 years ago. (Before widespread LLMs became a thing.) They wanted some B2B blogs written, properly sourced and researched, SEO optimised, about 800 words each. Okay, I have a pretty normal day rate for that, which I give them and say I'm willing to do a bulk discount if they want me to do 10. The reply was "oh, I was actually thinking closer to £15 per blog. If you do ten a week that's not a bad payment, right?" Yeah, I never wrote those blogs.

The phrase "it is what it is" was invented for it. It won't blow you away, it won't drain your bank balance (unless you REALLY dig their sausages rolls). It will provide you with some calories to keep you fuelled until your next meal, sometimes it's enjoyable. Some people make it a big part of their personality.

Posted by jordos@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 153 comments

AndyVale@reddit

Really depends on what your definition of affordable is, plus where you're going. Are you happy with fried chicken and chips in a box? If so, you'll probably find somewhere. There's always Greggs too. Does that count? Spoons too. If you're hoping to get a decent curry with rice, naan bread, and a bhaji for under a tenner at a sit-down restaurant in London, you're out of luck.

Better energy independence relying mostly on renewables. This will have a positive knock-on effect on our economy. I'm hoping we make the arts a viable, accessible career prospect for working class kids again, leading to some great works we are building pride in. Big divide between the millennials who inherited property+wealth from their parents and those who didn't. (Care Homes will eat up many people's life savings, leaving many without the nest egg they were quietly hoping for.) Keith Richards is still touring.

I live in the countryside. Last year I went on a hike, stopped off at a little old pub for a pint, very rustic. The only other customers there are two old blokes sitting at the bar. They say nothing to each other for a while until one says to the other "So, did anything happen this week?" The other pauses for a long, sombre thought. "No."

I used to think it was so glamorous when my Mum would go to a meeting in Barcelona. I later realised it meant getting picked up at 4am, flight at 7am, in a meeting room 3-4 hours later, stay there for 2-3 hours, lunch, another 2-3 hours in meeting rooms, back to the airport for an 8am flight to the UK, home at around midnight... And then she was expected to be at the UK office normal time the next day. Yeah, I can see the novelty wearing off a bit there.

Centre Parcs abroad is often cheaper than in the UK. Looking at Jet2, in the Summer holidays you can get several week-long 2 adult & 2 kids package holidays from London Gatwick for under £2k. Mostly Spanish and Greek islands. But yeah, school holidays the prices shoot up. A few years back we did 5 nights in Sicily while our son was on a residential trip. It cost us about £800 for flights and hotel, yet if we had gone in the Summer holidays it would have cost us more than double for the same trip before we factored in our son.

Made all sorts of complaints about legal tender and that it ruined her son's birthday. Okay, maybe next time don't ruin your son's birthday by deliberately making a scene so you can get some content.

About 12 years ago my son had a friend whose mum used to do this for him with stuff down the car boot sales. Every few weeks she'd swing round our house to drop off something she'd just picked up for a quid. One time she rocks up on our doorstep, "Oh I thought he would like this skateboard." He has never shown an interest in skateboarding, we don't have loads of space for one, if he wanted one we'd do some research and get him one the right size and in good condition. This one was super worn out and too big, plus we had no helmet or pads, not that it was a massive problem because the wheels barely turned fast enough to do much damage. Great, he pushed it around once or twice then that just took up space in a cupboard for a while. Then there were the roller skates too. Similar situation. I think there was a scooter as well. Lots of other bits of plastic bric-a-brac that he didn't particularly need, want, or ever use. She didn't have much money so we never wanted to appear ungrateful, but we did politely say that she didn't need to do this. Much of it soon went straight back to the charity shops when we had a clear out.

We got a full set of Denby plates and bowls about 9 years ago and just the other day I was marveling at how well they're holding up. Only a small chip on a bowl after I dropped a mug on it. It all still looks exceptional. That being said, I've not bought any since because I've had no need to.
