When did we universally stop having lunch ‘hours’?

Posted by newdawnfades123@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 635 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

Yes it was commonly an hour taken, but usually unpaid. Office hours were often 0900-1730. Now hours are often 0900-1700 with a 30 min unpaid lunch. Legally workers are entitled to a 20 min break per 6 hours worked, but again that’s not paid.

Can you ever safely plug and extension lead into an extension lead?

AmazingRedDog@reddit

Thanks for the downvotes😔 I’m not deleting my original advice trying to keep OP safe. OP said in their post that it was a metal strimmer that needs a “heavy duty cable due to high power”. Metal strimmers (vs cheap ones) are in the 800-1000W range. Running \~1000W continuously over 25–30m. That’s exactly when cable losses and heat start to matter

Can you ever safely plug and extension lead into an extension lead?

Posted by Kairismummy@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 56 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

It’s really not recommended given it’s a high power tool. Much safer to make the one off purchase of a proper heavy duty extension cord with built-in RCD protector (it cuts the power if overheats or cable gets cut). Make sure you fully extend (esp. if it’s a reel) before using.

Lots of people are boycotting cadburys (questionable ingredients, whether actually chocolates) so you’ll find those half price in lots of places. Other brands usually after the weekend (if you have a supermarket ‘loyalty’ card you’ll find 25% or more on some nice ones now).

What shaving items are best for teenage sons first shave?

Posted by inspiration0@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 277 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

Razor-wise I’ve tried loads, the very cheapest ones tend to clog up and only last one (sometimes less!) shaves. My go-to for reliability (lasts many weeks between needing to change blades/head) has been Gillette (the ones with 5 blades - as in blades on each head unit) - however I’ve recently been very pleased with the new Sainsbury’s ones which have exceeded my expectations. Trick is to use hot water and soften bristles - the old style shaving brushes are great at this. Can even pair that up with those little wooden shaving soap dishes with lid - both available at your local chemist. - if that’s too fussy then go for a gel-based shaving cream in pressurised container.

How does Glenfiddich whisky compare to Macallan in terms of taste?

Posted by Difficult-Cookie9905@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 27 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

My advice: pop down to your local (or the one you like)- they will have several whisky’s. Try each of them (over a few visits!) and see what you like. Your taste requirements will differ from the next person and one shot at a time is comparable to the price of a pint. I’ve tried Glenfiddich 12 & 15 and enjoyed.

Why is Waitrose seen as so posh?

Posted by MacaroonSad8860@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 525 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

Whilst traditional supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury) had traditionally focused on lower prices, along with Morrisons and Asda (seen as budget); Waitrose was aspirational and was typically found on more affluent areas. European brands such as Aldi and Lidl came to the UK in the early 1990s offering budget conscious shopping. This emphasised the dynamic of Waitrose being the “poshest” of the high street. There were always more premium stores like Fortnum and Mason but these (still are) very niche. With recessions and cost of living crises, more and more shoppers began to see the value of Lidl and Aldi. This led to the others having to up their game - either lower prices or emphasise their premium position (aspirational). Marks and Spencer played a clever hand and began promoting its food section towards premium, and opening food-only stores. Lately the newest ones have a distinctly premium feel and nearby Waitrose stores are being forced to refurbish to keep pace. So in 2026, you have still got tiers - the difference is that increasingly budget conscious households from ‘middle classes’ are more savvy, and Waitrose is battling it out with M&S.

Is my roof leaking?

Posted by BonedusterLegitYT@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 8 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

Yes you absolutely need to find the cause, can you access the space above. One thing to note (have been through this more than once), the source of the leak is not necessarily directly above; water will trickle horizontally until it can find a space to drop vertically again. This is why you sometimes see water coming through ceiling light fittings etc.

One thing to note (have been through this more than once), the source of the leak is not necessarily directly above; water will trickle horizontally until it can find a space to drop vertically again. This is why you sometimes see water coming through ceiling light fittings etc. So, it could be pooling in your loft, and the source could be directly above or for example a water tank if your house has one of those (or, from a neighbours house if that’s a party wall). Just don’t leave it’s likely to get worse.

Do Brits really wear "jumpers" all the time?

Posted by LoveYerBrain2@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 120 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

Whilst jumper/sweater are interchangeable, in the UK (some regions anyway) jumper means the wool version and sweater (sweatshirt) is the version you’d wear at sports. Of course we’d wear these when it’s either too warm for a coat (or, indoors), or under a coat if it’s VERY cold. The climate here is generally mild so jumpers are a spring/ autumn/winter thing

Moved into a c.1870s Victorian property a few years ago. We noticed the previous owners had thick curtains in places like the front door (which they took with them). Now we know why; especially on days of high humidity and cold air from the north/ east. I think any thick/lined curtain help versus shutters (which we have)

Fellow people of the UK for whom Chiristmas Day is the start of the festivities and not the end - where are you from and what areyour plans for the season?

Posted by Scarred_fish@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 73 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

Christmas on 6 or 7 January is celebrated mainly in countries whose churches follow the Julian calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar. 6th January is Christmas Day in Armenia. Christmas Day on 7th January is observed in many Eastern Orthodox countries including Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Georgia, Belarus, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, and parts of Moldova and Ukraine. In many other countries such as Greece, Spain, Italy, and Mexico, 6 January is not Christmas Day but is celebrated as Epiphany, marking the visit of the Three Kings. I guess people who throw their tree out on Boxing Day have either had it up since November, had too many arguments, or might be going on holiday?

If traveling from Heathrow to Edinburgh, what's more fun - plane, train or automobile?

Posted by Goonie-Googoo-@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 335 comments

AmazingRedDog@reddit

Scotland is a beautiful country in itself, yet January is peak midwinter so driving around is not the best timing. Personally I would fly direct there on this occasion and if weather allows, hire a car and enjoy Edinburgh and its surroundings. Especially so if your daughter will be travelling with extensive luggage; you can leave this in her accommodation. Then plan perhaps meet up in Spring/ summer break, she could get the train down to London, spend time with you there and you could travel up to Edinburgh and fly back from there.
