Is it better to travel on new years eve or new years day?

Just been told I need to be back at work for the 2nd. And I'm currently over 200 miles away. I have a super off peak return that's valid until end of Jan. But I don't know whether it's better to travel tomorrow or the 1st. Especially because I will need to travel through London.

If there are regular services scheduled for 1/1, I'd rather put up with potentially disrupted empty trains than zombie-apocalypse-crowding NYE trains. Unless you're going early morning, before the NYE crowds start to mass.

I’d suggest your first course of action would be to see what services are running on each day and if you can even get home on 1st. In Scotland trains don’t run at all

I can't speak for London but for the rest of the travel I'd say the 1st is likely to be better. People want to be at certain spots for NYE whereas NYD is a bit more chill - in my experience anyway.

No trains at all in some places (like Scotland) on NYD. So the stations are certainly quieter there...

I disagree - depending on area. There is no public travel services in my area on NYD, its like christmas day, a shut down

If it was me, NYE, don’t get stressed, all lines _should_ run (and late into the night) When you eventually get home you can chill and have a lie-in on NYD before going back the next day 👍

There are many restrictions to trains , check online what services are running for your journey, I would take the first available train to give you more options when something goes wrong.

I would travel on NYE as you’ll more likely have reduce services and rail replacement etc on 1st as it’s a bank holiday

NYE is going to be busier and more stressful, NYD more likely to have disrupted schedule. It’s a choose your battle situation.

I've done New Years eve evening, expected it to be a nightmare. It was fab, everyone using the train for local travel were happy to be headed on a night out and there wasn't that many people doing long distance. This was the Cardiff to Portsmouth line.
