PSA: Those ultrasonic cat scarers ARE audible to humans ears and incredibly painful for many autistic people. Please don't.
marktuk@reddit
I very much doubt the people that use them will care.
phoenixeternia@reddit
If used, put them at the end of the area and face them towards your own home so they are only set off by animals and the people entering and leaving. Still painful but at least people can walk past in peace and go off less often.
I hate these with a passion.
TremendousCustard@reddit
Not a bad idea but most people will just buy the cheapest possible one off Amazon. My neighbour has one in the backyard and it goes off every time it rains and sometimes for absolutely reason, it's awful.
phoenixeternia@reddit
Oh honestly i think they should be banned but people will still buy and use until that never happens so I'd rather advise how to use them in a less cunty way lol
phoenixeternia@reddit
My neighbour had one in the front facing the path, our front gardens are hardly gardens they are about 2x2meters token greenary lol. Anyway so everything that passes set it off, on top of that they never cut it so the swaying of overgrown plants would set it off, did my head in.
Little_Narwhal_9416@reddit
chilli powder , big bag of cheapest from local Asian shop and sprinkle liberally
Express-Training5428@reddit
When did pooping become a word used in the UK ? It's shitting or crapping....
Eptic_ninja@reddit
Cat repellent granules / Rubber Snakes
Fattydog@reddit
Nothing to do with cat poop but I’m intrigued at the precariousness of your bins.
Icy_Distribution3467@reddit
They are weighed down by the sheer volume of cat turds
rossysaurus@reddit
DeviousWeaselUK@reddit
If you drink coffee, plop used coffee grounds down there.
We get cats crapping in our front garden sometimes, so we pop the coffee grounds down and voila, no more cats.
SelectaCDogg@reddit
Chicken wire. Lay some down then loosely lay some bark over the top to hide it. We had the same issue down the side of our house. Cats aren't keen on instability, the chicken wire made the surface less stable and we never had a problem again after that.
MaxMouseOCX@reddit
Several catering packets of chilli flakes or powdered chilli from amazon, sprinkle liberally.
Cats are mammals so I assume that works on them.
Key_Plum_99a@reddit
Anything which smells strong. If you NEVER want to plant plants there you could spray with Jeyes fluid which will stop them. Alternative is to plant curry plants, a grey leaved low growing plant they’ll hate the smell of, it you’re likely to notice the smell too on hot days. If you paved it,it would stop altogether!
Dawningrider@reddit
My petition to the council to allow land mines was rejected, I'll keep you posted.

Lavender plants.
_bubble-t@reddit
Lavenders can be toxic to cats
Finger-Painter@reddit
Think that's the idea
BiscuitKicker1@reddit
Neighbours cat shat on my lavender plant, I think just to spite me
Individual-Rope-3769@reddit
Haha! Sure it wasn’t a fox? They shit on anything and everything at mine.
ajslov@reddit
I have huge lavender, sage, rosemary and other hugs in my garden and they are 100% not deterred by any of them. They lie under it, roll everywhere.
phatboi23@reddit
same at my parents, pretty sure they take a big dump in front of it to prove a point.
always gotta go round with a trowel to get rid of them when cutting the front grass, my parents don't have cats, the house next door doesn't lol
AWildEnglishman@reddit
Same. We had lavender completely overtake our front and it still seemed like their favourite place to shit.
Liaooky@reddit
Makes sense. They probably think "I can't stand the smell of lavender but it sure beats the smell of shit"
Also don't they bury their poop to prevent the scent from being picked up? Might be beneficial to shit around things that have a strong smell.
Left_Chemist_8198@reddit
Should get lavender anyway haha I love lavender
most_crispy_owl@reddit
I have lots of lavender in containers and a cat who has a cat friend. They don't seem to mind at all and lie next to it. I'd never heard of it being a cat deterrent
Weylane@reddit
Lavender is toxic to cats and smôme might not be dettered by it. If it's a regular spot for cats, I wouldn't risk it.
vipros42@reddit
Frankly if a cat is stupid enough to poison itself on a common garden plant it's probably going to get itself run over before too long.
Mediocre-Opinion@reddit
Cats have up to 500 taste buds, humans have upto 10k. They don't get the usual taste signals like bitterness if its toxic.
FCSadsquatch@reddit
Don't they have an insanely good sense of smell compared to humans?
Weylane@reddit
I mean, you're all right and that's why my stupid cat is an indoor cat.
theocrats@reddit
Hey if a cat decides to come into my garden an eat my plants thats on them
Imitation_0@reddit
The plants would only cause minor issues like tummy upset if ingested. It's only when concentrated such as oils/fragrances that it is particularly dangerous.
Individual-Rope-3769@reddit
Darwin award if so…

Poop there first show dominance. Create an uneven surface or use citrus peels
Queefmaster69000@reddit
I think laying your own meat egg of dominance needs to happen before the surface is made uneven.
I can't imagine much worse than falling over into your own shit.
BeersAndGym@reddit
You say that but my cat is immune to citrus, tried it around the Xmas tree and did nothing to deter the little fucker climbing it
RoleMysterious8756@reddit
Well if you want to restrict your cat’s ability to climb the tree, then I would suggest maybe making some sort of collar of oranges. Sometimes the peel isn’t enough.
Ok_Owl_8062@reddit
I honestly read that as a collar for the cat. Then realised. Unless...
phatboi23@reddit
that's what i thought...
bit harsh lol
RoleMysterious8756@reddit
You’re right that would be cruel.
Perhaps hollowed out oranges worn as booties as an alternative?
phatboi23@reddit
Some people are into it haha
Hopper-1986@reddit
I know that curse mine broke a bottle of aftershave knocked the Xmas tree over and led to an expensive vet visit Xmas eve one year.
Glass_Advantage_1370@reddit
This is bad advice. That absolutely will not work unless you are dressed in a cat costume.
HumanBeing7396@reddit
And look the other cats in the eye while you do it.
Hopper-1986@reddit
This guy poops
Glass_Advantage_1370@reddit

phatboi23@reddit

lost-crusade@reddit

RoleMysterious8756@reddit
Yep, I think a pooey, citrusy rockery garden should do the job.
johndom3d@reddit
lol 😆
Arbycutter@reddit
Cover it in rocks or something clunky so there no space for them to go
amg10red@reddit
Or use plastic cat spikes.
FynnM@reddit
I don't get why you've been heavily downvoted. They don't hurt the animal, and mostly put them off shitting everywhere. Win Win for all concerned.
omniwrench-@reddit
‘Cat spikes’ is a pretty alarming phrase to anyone who doesn’t know what they are
Myself included!
amg10red@reddit
They probably thought spikes=sharp metal pokey things. I think it worked better than other deterrents like chilli powder which had to be constantly reapplied.
FynnM@reddit
Yeah chili really isn't as good as most people claim. I tried Cayenne on my pots last year to keep the squirrels off after they ruined 3 sowings of spinach just by digging. If there was the slightest bit of rain I'd have to reapply. Even with it on they still dug some stuff up, albeit to a lesser extent.
They didn't even eat the seedlings which was the most annoying part. It was almost as though they just wanted to commit vandalism
_Denizen_@reddit
It really doesn't take a genius to understand why putting plastic in the garden could be a bad thing. It's only the biggest threat to animal and human health since global warming.
amg10red@reddit
I had to do it because getting a firearms license is nigh impossible in my country and I couldn't rig up a shotgun trap which was my first choice.
FynnM@reddit
There will already be microplastics in that soil.mmight as well keep it to just microplastics instead of cat shit (which is also harmful to human health) and microplastics.
If OP is really concerned about microplastics, which is valid, then they can get wooden or metal ones as long as they are blunt enough to not cause injury whilst remaining uncomfortable to squat over.
Arbycutter@reddit
The fluffy bunny brigade
peahair@reddit
My fluffy bunny was a great cat deterrent. We gave him the run of the garden and if a cat came in, he er saw something furry with four legs and used to think “eh, close enough” and run after em for a little amour.

sanbikinoraion@reddit
Whenever I see a cat in the garden I chase it off. They stay away now.
BaldPleaser@reddit
Sprinkle some Chilli powder. That’s how I stopped them popping on my back lawn.
ElectricalInflation@reddit
I put peppermint water all over mine and it’s kept them off pretty well
phoenixeternia@reddit
My cat licks my chilli crisps and will try and stick his head in the bag. Not saying this won't work, just wanted to share that my cat is a fking nutter
ENNLRon@reddit
Pepper does the trick too I think.
boredsittingonthebus@reddit
My grandma used pepper and she said it did the trick.
jackanakanory_30@reddit
Get a cat. Cats defend their territory and don't tend to poop in their own garden.
UKD92@reddit
I kept having this problem in my back garden from cats. So I went up to LIDL and brought ground black pepper and scattered it all over my garden. It's been 6 weeks and not a single turd has been laid since.
Rtnscks@reddit
Cut some thin branches into 30cm lengths and push them into the soil at intervals around 20 cm. The sticks make it hard for the card to have space to turn about for toileting and dig.
Astro___ortsA@reddit
You made him/her a literal litter tray. Of course he will use it.

I dumped coffee grounds to discourage them from crapping in my flower bed and border hedge, so they crapped on the paving just in front of my door instead.

JobAnxious2005@reddit
Clear-Meat9812@reddit
That's silly, it'll break the bins.
Just get a lion.
HumanBeing7396@reddit
Then you’ll have lion poo to deal with.
Kimmicute@reddit
just get something that will eat the lion then duh
evilamnesiac@reddit
Thats just going to result is bigger cat poo.
Besides, keeping a lion is totally impractical, they are a social animal so you would need a pride of them which isn’t feasible in the space given. Has OP considered a tiger or polar bear perhaps?
London-scote@reddit
Sprinkle cat dry cat food they don’t like to poop where they eat
Silvestris1@reddit
claymore?
Biggeordiegeek@reddit
Actively invite them to do it there, make it welcoming for them and a cats paradise
Then they won’t out of sheer spite
Womb8t@reddit
Toothpicks and sprinkle some chilli powder
phoenixeternia@reddit
You could look into buying lion poop/manure, it's for this reason and helps fertilise the ground. I've had some success with cat deterant granules from amazon but every cat is different.
Putting down old coffee grounds or citrus peel are often given as suggestions too. Planting lavender and peppermint plants - a lot of cats don't like the smell, some wont give a fk.
Big problem is this looks and feels like a litter tray to cats.
You could make the soil suitable for cactus, there is also little plastic spikey mesh things to put down that deters cats and dogs no harm just uncomfortable.
Oh also large chunky gravel, not the little stuff but the ones that look like rocks, they can't dig it and its uncomfortable to walk on - although you'll probably get the odd weirdo that still poops on top of it.
ShiftExotic@reddit
My neighbour uses the cut stems from spiky plants (think Rose bushes, etc) to ward off cats. They lay them in a sort of criss-cross or # layout. So far it seems to have worked!
AnonymousTimewaster@reddit
Make it seem less like a litter tray...
Bubbly-Weakness-4788@reddit
I put some bamboo sticks across my beds. Just high enough they can’t move the soil or mulch around. It’s the only thing that worked.
MeRichYouPoor@reddit
As others have said, you need to replace the bark with medium-sized stones. Cotswold or bigger.
Expensive-Draw-6897@reddit
Peppermint spray or one of those solar powered animal deterrent.
otterpockets75@reddit

PanicStil@reddit
Cucumbers
theNixher@reddit
I put a gate at the front of my garden, secured it and let the dogs roam free. Never saw a cat again, not in good condition anyway.
Jackson_Polack_@reddit
Motion activated sprinkler
Majestic_Swordfish83@reddit
I would take off the bark, put some weed membrane down and then 20 ml gravel on top. 20 ml is too big to be attractive to dig into, unlike smaller sized gravel or bark chip.
You can also use slate chippings if you go for the larger sized ones.
Source: have 4 cats. I keep an area of soft dug soil free for my cats to use as a potty area (which means I know where they are going to be pooping, so no nasty gardening surprises) and have gravelled or planted the rest with ground cover plants.
Clear-Meat9812@reddit
Slate chips fixed a cat problem at a previous house for me.
AWildEnglishman@reddit
We have 20ml gravel and we're the only house on our street the cats seem to like. Most other people have large slate chips so I'd go for those instead.
PrimeZodiac@reddit
You may have started a slate race if everyone else's goes to 30mm
Doughtnutz@reddit
Get a pet lion.
ConditionImportant63@reddit
You could put down stems of brambles. They fade to brown and blend in pretty quickly. Stops the cats trying to poo there and is eco friendly!

mrs_shrew@reddit
Grow pyracanthus and use the twigs to discourage them. Also strategically placed stones will stop them being able to squat so easily

IkeTurn@reddit
we use these things, they work really well.

thickly slice up 2 lemons and place the slices around the area, replace the slices in 2 days time - they will have moved on by then
MrMysteryPenguin@reddit (OP)
Thanks for all the suggestions! I’ve an abundance of orange peel and coffee grounds on a regular basis so will try that first. Annoyingly didn’t realise bark would make such an attractive toilet when I put it down - if I did I would have gone with gravel.
Bubbly_Discussion127@reddit
Kick em " HARD " 🤣🤣
GoodThingsDoHappen@reddit
Buy a dog
TheKhaos121@reddit
From experience, remove cat shit as soon as you spot it, if others see it they will add to the area. The wood bark is the perfect shitting environment for a cat, I put a black wire mesh over the top of it to stop them kicking it up after going, it looks bad but so does ucat shit.
And finally of all the products I've purchased over the years only one has had actual results. A motion sensor water sprayer, you need to hook them up to a hose which sucks, but they cover a wide area and work really well. There are lots of downsides but it solves the issue. I set mine up in the summer then remove it for winter and by then the cats know not to fuck with me.

I protected the pots etc with chicken wire and haven’t had to deal with cat shit since.
seb4096@reddit
I've had cats shit on grass, on tarmack, on gravel, in rockery, on bark. They're not bothered. All the scenty things won't work or all the other old wives tales. The only thing I've found effective was a motion detecting water sprayer. You can get them from Amazon for about £30.

I had this issue. The only thing that worked was those really annoying cat scarer things that emit the high pitched noise. The good news it it totally worked and after about 3 months I took them away and the cats haven’t returned.
The bad news is you absolutely can hear it over 30 and it’s fucking annoying. I’d only use it if it won’t infuriate your neighbours or kids tbh.

To keep cats out of your garden, use a combination of physical barriers and scent deterrents. Effective methods include laying chicken wire just below the soil surface, spreading citrus peels, coffee grounds, or lavender, and using motion-activated sprinklers or ultrasonic devices. Ensure the garden is not inviting by keeping soil wet or covering it with prickly mulch
Failing all that, a water pistol can be lots of fun. Cats hate getting wet. I am a hopeless cat worshipper and owner, but understand your delemma.
BarryIslandIdiot@reddit
There are crystals you can buy that you scatter. They deter cats and dogs from pooping there. You have to reapply them after it rains though.
jellyjoenut031@reddit
Buy a shotgun /s
Chilli powder and or vinigar. Give it a sprinkle will keep them away.
Uncle-Rufus@reddit
I was once in a garden center browsing their cat repelling wares, when a random old lady emerged from behind me and told me to ignore all those products. Male urine she said, has to be male as female urine will actually make it worse...
I gave it a go and she was right! So now every now and then especially after very heavy rain I piss in a jar and carefully splash a little here and there in the beds where I know the cats sometimes like to use, and it really works!

I'd replace the bark with a large size of gravel, like 30-50mm or slate, I'd also put some larger rocks (about the size of a football every 30-60cm apart. I have cats and they love chip bark to poop in.
Firm-Wear2736@reddit
Bear trap, landmines. I am obviously joking. People would always tell me lemon scent though it never worked for me. My neighbours cats would shit on my landing daily/weekly. No amount of complaining to the council or the neighbour would do anything, they're both useless. Even had to apologise to my postie once as he stepped in a pile outside my front door. "Sorry bro, I don't even own a cat".

Hi, just had somewhat same issue. This has worked for the past 4 weeks and no more poo found
Make sure you remove all poo that you can find. If you do not have anything growing there then mix white vinegar with water and spray/sprinkle everywhere around the area. Lastly get yourself lots of 2L or bigger bottles, remove the labels and fill with water. Dot them in and around.
Mister_V3@reddit
I heard fox urine can be a deterrent. You can buy a spray.

Great ideas for the larger sized stones, it's a shame that a lot of the plants that keep away cats are also poisonous to them.
I have them pooping on my grass in the back garden all the time - I'm sure it's some guys and gals war zone for all of them in the area - I'm going to get a water butt and some kind of motion activated water spray.
