I turn 31 this Sunday and I am in the same boat friend-wise. I'm off sick from work with a fractured spine so I cant do much. I plan on ordering a huge takeaway and popping on a film I haven't seen yet. Im a recovering alcoholic, so while I would love to have a drink I'm going to eat myself silly instead. Happy birthday! I hope you enjoy yourself xx

My daughters primary school allow them to wear their P.E. kits when the weather is very hot. Back when I was in secondary school we did not have to wear blazers and were allowed to wear short sleeved shirts.

Did you ever use chalk boards in school?

I was also born in 1995 and my primary school classrooms all had "rolling blackboards" in them. They had a plain blackboard, lines for handwriting, squares for numeracy and a white boards that would roll around when you pulled on it. I remember they updated to projectors on a whiteboard when I was in Year 3 or so.

I wrote my tag on a bench that was COVERED in graffiti. One of my so called mates grassed me up and I alone got in trouble. I was rewarded with 6 days in isolation. I don't think the punishment fit the crime.

My nanna had a sister who was just like her. They all grew up dirt poor but she managed to bag a middle class husband. They had a very nice house in the posh part of our city. She used to put on a posher accent so she didn't sound like us degenerates any more. I remember visiting her when I was a child and she made you take your shoes off at the door and had plastic over her flowery sofa. They had a huge garden and I thought they were super duper rich lol When she would come and visit us she would look down her nose at our tiny terraced house. She was convinced my grandad was like Onslow, because he was a heavier guy who worked a manual job. When I grew up I found the humour in how fake she was, but as a kid I sure though she was posh.

Is it true that ultra fancy private hospitals sometimes have to send patients to NHS hospital?

I had the opposite happen for my tonsillectomy. I was sent to a swanky private hospital. I got my own room and room service. It was incredible, but I was only there about 6 hours, and I was out of it for most of that. 10/10 would do again.

I was 11, and though I was well educated on the matter, it was still very alarming seeing the blood in my undies. I just thought my stomach ache meant I needed a big poo. What didn't help was that my mum was in the hospital at the time, so my grandma went out to buy me my first pads. She brought back those HUGE post partum cotex ones, and I only had those to work with for the whole week.

When I was 10 years old in year 6, we were changing into our PE clothes in the classroom because we were having a fun summer afternoon in the park next door. I was developing breasts at the time, and I asked the teacher if I could change just my top half in the bathroom as I was uncomfortable exposing my chest. She said no. I went to the bathroom anyway and changed my top. The teacher made me change back into my uniform, and I was told I would not have any free time in the park. I had to hand out drinks and ice pops to everyone else in my class and sit on the bench with the teachers. (Who were all smoking) Anyway I stole a whole box of ice pops as vengeance and I never told a soul. Fuck you Miss Clear.

As a kid, did you call it a game of 'tag' or 'tig'?

1234onions@reddit

I had mine out at 17, and I absolutely hated it. Couldn't eat a thing for a week, and in the first 2 days, it was painful to even swallow saliva. My tonsil beds opened back up after 3 days, and I woke up in the middle of the night, literally drowning in blood. On the plus side, I've not had problems with my tonsils since (i am 30 now), and I can now swallow like 5 pills in one go, lol. I've had a baby and my appendix out after it burst, and my tonsils were still the worst medical procedure I've had done.

My mate was telling me his neighbour's 5 year old kid stays up and watches Squid Games, I think on a tablet in his room. How common is that?

1234onions@reddit

When I watched the newest season of Squid Game, my 5 year old had woke up and snuck into my bedroom. I don't know how much she saw before she alerted me of her presence, but it was enough for her to ask questions about it. I gave her age appropriate answers (i.e its all make-believe and they are playing pretend), and she seemed to move on. However, since then, I have noticed that during her supervised tablet time, there are literally hundreds of Squid Game material aimed at children. There are videos on YouTube kids that are SG themed. There are custom levels on Roblox where you can play SG games. There is even a load of knock-off SG themed games on the Play Store. It's very alarming.

I’d like to tell a story of the opposing side of this. I had an elderly relative who had pretty bad dementia and had a multitude of problems with her organs. The doctors gave her months to live and sent her home and it was decided for her that she should quit smoking to squeeze a bit more time out for her. The only problem with this was that she’d been smoking for 50+ years and could not comprehend or remember that she was not allowed cigarettes. Whenever we visited I would make sure to have a moment alone with her and let her smoke a few cigarettes. I thought it was cruel that they were causing her so much distress by not letting her smoke, just so they could prolong her suffering a few more weeks for their benefit alone. She always seemed a little more relaxed and lucid when she had a smoke in her hand. She has passed now but I’d like to think that I made those final moments a little easier for her. Sometimes, when death is knocking on the door, a few ciggies won’t hurt.

My ex and I arrived at the hotel to find it had been closed months previously! There was a sign on the door written in Spanish that neither of us could decipher and we didn’t have data roaming to use Google translate. We were sat outside the closed hotel on a bench panicking when a lovely German couple saved the day and walked us to the sister hotel down the coast and we got it all sorted out. Booking.com had a lot to answer for when we finally got WiFi!

I’m 28 and my mum is 50. She constantly swore around me when I was a child so I knew which words were swear words and how to use them correctly but I wouldn’t swear in front of her. As soon as I turned 13 I tried swearing around her and she didn’t mind it as long as I never swore AT her and I always swore in context. Now every other sentence we both say to each other have swear words in them.

I have a 4 year old girl and we used “front bum” for a long time. When she became better at talking we switched to “vagina” and it’s caused no issues. Personally I feel like using “penis” “testicles” and “vagina” cause no harm whatsoever and causes less embarrassment than using made up cutesy words. For example when I was a child my mother referred to my female genitals as a “tuppence” and I cannot express enough how much that word makes my skin crawl.

Morrisons have a thing where they make up bags of shopping that have the price on the front. When you buy them they are donated to food banks. You can pick and choose which ones you want to donate by price and contents of the bag. I’ve bought one or two along with my own shopping every once in a while.
