What health issues do people in the UK seem to think are becoming much more common these days?

Basically the weight loss drugs. This history of GLP-1s is really interesting. Ezra Klein did a really good interview/show on the history and future of weight loss drugs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_JKQt4mp5I

Has Manchester changed more than any other UK city? What's next?

I really don't understand how the trains will work? How will they make it faster to get into town? Most trains go outside of Greater Manchester and ran by Northern, so TfGM can't just increase frequency without it having a knock on effect on the whole rail network. I'm assuming the lines that stay within Greater Manchester will get touch pads at their stations and be placed in a zone for easier ticketing but what about those stations that on a line where the train goes out of GM? "Tap in and tap out but only if you're getting off at Ashton or Stalybridge not Huddersfield"?

Are people flakier than they used to be?

Posted by ValuableForever672@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 199 comments

thesecondcaptain@reddit

Yeah, I find the lack of compassion in this thread a bit worrying but maybe I'm just OK with people being flakey at the age of 40. My friends and I have worked out that we're most likely to have regular catch ups in the mornings, after a run and just for coffee/tea and pastries. Sometimes lunch works but anything into the late afternoon/evening is at risk of cancellation due to spouse/family responsibilities

Eldest siblings that were 7+ years older, did you end up being parentified?

thesecondcaptain@reddit

Yep, my eldest brother is 20 years older than me. He really did feel like another parent especially when my parents were aging. We have a really odd relationship, tbf, it's not a very sibling relationship. I get on more with his kids than with him 🤷‍♂️

What was the decision you took, even though you knew it would disappoint your parents?

Exactly! I read a heart warming article about todya about how an eldery widowed uses an AI robot for companionship. It was pretty darn cute. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/12/us/elliq-ai-robot-senior-companion.html?unlocked_article_code=1.LlA.xsqa.KJoMO_0yV47W&smid=url-share

That's fair enough but personally the whole sensory experience doesn't really matter to me (though I understand that it does for some people). I never really got the whole fawning over the smell/touch of books 🤷‍♂️ But devices can also open up new worlds to people that are usually closed off. I read The New Yorker on the app and have read amazing long form pieces and short stories on my phone which I usually would not have had access to without paying a huge cost upfront.

> I don’t connect with the book in the same way I honestly don't get this and find most people can't really expand on why they feel like this. As long as a story is well written I can easily connect with it no matter what the medium is. For me, it's usually paperback -> e-book -> hardback (if I *really* have to). The new ereaders are very close to paper and are far more comfortable to hold than a hardback. Plus, it leaves a hand free for a croissaint and a mug of coffee. If you don't work, how do you fill your days?

Yep, that is an important distinction. OP actually mentions that they caught up on music, reading and films. I don't think many people who are in work realise the sense of belonging work gives you once it's taken away. Looks like most Redditors just think it'll be a never ending weekend if you're not working.

Nah, I think you've invented an entirely different post that OP didn't write. "Wondering how they find their place in the world" and "derealisation" weren't even mentioned. Sounds like you want OP to be suffering so badly that you're coming up with fanfiction about what OP *really* meant.

C'mooon, I'm not sure why you're working so hard to ignore theplain text of what OP wrote. Describing people as walking around "with their mouths open as if they don't know where they are" isn't neutral. That's not "I struggle to relate," that's "I think these people are zombies." I agree that mental health struggles deserve compassion, but that doesn't mean every complaint of feeling different is automatically vulnerability rather than judgment.

Eh, OP could have phrased it better. Right now it comes across as pretty disingenuous. "am I the weirdo?" just screams OP wanting validation how special they are. OP should have really focused on their own feelings. "I feel isolated because I don't share the same interests" or show curiosity "I dont' understand that appeal of this thing, what am I missing?"

I'm in the same boat. I'm 39 and have always lived with family. It's a double edged sword at times - wanting my own place but also having to looking after parents. It's mentally taxing.

Everyday. Try to at least 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening. Currently working my way through the Booker Prize shortlist (the paperback ones, at least. I don't do hardback 🤣)

Yep, similar situation here. I'm 39 and live with my 81 year old mum. She's on pension credit, can't speak English and has always been a stay at home mum. We have siblings nearby but some of my siblings don't really get on with her. Luckily, our house is paid off and I can work from home earning a decent salary, so pay all the bills (though I know we're lucky that she gets a lot of discounts being on pensin credit). The flip side is that it's ruined any romantic relationships I've pursued in the past and any life plans I currently have are put on hold.

> No one is going to look at you and think because you have never been abroad that somehow you are worth less. Eh, looking at the some of the comments OP has received I think some people do (i.e. calling it weird and sad). I haven't been abroad in over a decade now and people look at me like I'm strange. It's amazing how common of a subject of "got any plans to get away?" is in general conversation in the UK
