Do you eat rice with a spoon or fork?

Posted by floccinaucinili@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 273 comments

My non-British partner insists that all British people(except me) eat rice with a fork. Is this true?

Spoon or chopsticks depending on the meal.

I just had rice for lunch and used a fork. As I always do.

Spoon or chopsticks, much easier with a spoon to get a proper mouthful of everything!

I don't use chopsticks to show off, I use chopsticks because the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet said giving me a fork "undermined their business model".

Once went to a little Chinese place to eat with my partner. I'm British-Chinese, she's white British. She went with a more cultured option of getting some kind of noodle soup. I got some chicken curry and chips thing. When it was brought to our table, I was given the noodle soup with chopsticks, she was given the curry and chips with a fork.

Like a 3rd of the worlds population manage just fine with chopsticks, it's hardly a flex 😂 If you can use them they're actually great for rice.

I grew up in a mixed household (including Iranian). My parents always used a spoon and fork but they never taught/ corrected me. As an adult my Filipino wife taught me to use a spoon and fork (non dominant hand fork pushes the rice to the dominant hand spoon), it's by far the best way to eat rice and I'm annoyed I wasn't taught earlier. I've also learned some people: 1. wash rice after cooking it. 2. don't rinse dishes after washing them.

If it's a dish that doesn't need anything cutting with a knife and fork, because everything is already in bite sized pieces or smaller, I'll always use a spoon at home. I know the ways of the chopstick (and etiquette as that is very important) however on my travels I picked up the ways of the fork and spoon which is a superior option in the majority of cases to a knife and fork. The spoon cuts and the fork holds and pushes onto the spoon, for tougher cuts the side of the fork is also good for cutting. I grew up eating rice with a knife and fork. Looking back it was a silly option.

Depends what I'm eating. If it can be eaten with a fork conveniently, then probably a fork. Basically when there's a sauce that is glue-like, or stickier rice that isn't actually sticky rice (obviously hand for that), spoon if it's with a soup or it's dry like a biryani or fried rice.

It’s easiest to scrape the rest of the rice out of a bowl with a spoon, but just as easy with a fork on a plate. So I guess it depends what kid of receptacle it’s in. Bowl and spoon make more sense.

Depends on what the rest of the meal is. If it's being served with fork food, fork. If it's being served with spoon food, spoon. I won't dirty an extra utensil for the rice's sake.

Yes. Depends on what's being served with it. I will have rice as a side, seasoned, in a small bowl with a spoon sometimes. Or if it's with food that also needs cutting, a knife and fork. Sometimes I even use chopsticks.

If there's sauce involved, for instance a curry, or some Chinese food etc, I will eat with a spoon. I do not care what others will think, I'm going for practical. And that way you can eat all the sauce, too. I will push this further, too. I eat my fucking peas with a spoon too. Because I'd rather look odd using a spoon than having to get those bastards escape from my fork. At home I eat alone with my 5 year old so whatever is the most practical wins. And he eats his peas with his fingers so I win the pea table manners anyway.

A fork. He is correct - he's referring to perhaps the single most successful policy the UK has ever implemented which is "All UK citizens must eat rice with a fork, except for u/floccinaucinilli" We all follow this policy very strictly and I for one am relieved to hear you are following policy and not using a fork. If one person deviates then sadly the entire policy will fall apart, followed shortly by the entirety of the UK. Please don't because if the UK falls then this will have a knock on effect on places like France etc and before we know it the world will be over.

I mean, I don’t really sit down and just… eat rice. I eat rice as part of a larger meal. And for a meal, especially one with chunks of meat etc that I might want to spear to pick up, I use a fork.
