Calling Linux Long Beards: What are things you wish you knew when you first started using Linux?

The default Bash shell is needlessly obtuse. Getting a new shell will make your life way easier. The Fish shell is an example of a much better option that comes with syntax highlighting and auto-completion to help guide you to the correct command much faster.

Email from your boss 30 minutes after the missile: “Hey Team, due to the recent missile strike, leadership has asked everyone to be all hands on deck for the next eight weeks. Please make sure you are arriving ready to work and understand that vacations will be limited to only what has already been approved. As a thank you, we’ll be getting Costco Pizzas delivered tomorrow. Keep up the great work and please let your manager know if you see any unfamiliar aircraft!”

I would have a private conversation with the guy and let him know that this came across your desk and that while it’s reasonable to assume a one-time fluke could be an ad redirect from a website, if it continues you will have an obligation to report it. $5 bet says the problem fixes itself immediately.

What the heck: Agentic AI???

Posted by xX8Omni8Xx@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 301 comments

You’re not behind the curve. There are basically zero companies actually deploying real agentic AI right now. The entire market right now is basically all LinkedIn hucksters claiming to revolutionize your business if you just pay them a small 50k all fee.

Honestly, if I were you, I would talk to a labor attorney. I love this shit and can very quickly tell you if you have a solid case. You can work with them to hatch a plan where you grind it out for the next six months, document everything, and then hit them with a big lawsuit. You could easily walk away with a juicy 100k lump sump payday, and honestly legal action is the only thing that will teach these fuckers a lesson. You’d be doing the world a favor while also cutting yourself a small slice.

Corny thread. People want a laptop with good battery life and Macs are the best option that provides right now. Trying to stand in the way of that is just going to make you look out of touch and get bypassed.

Agreed, and I think this is a major blind spot that many IT departments have. Are you making the decision to make YOUR life better, or are you making the decision to make your CUSTOMER’S life better? IT should serve the business and its users, not be an annoyance of hoops to jump through.

Posted by CloudLenny@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 181 comments

This is a direct result of execs cramming AI down employee’s throats and demanding they use it or else prepare to get fired. Honestly it it’s very similar to the Wells Fargo fake accounts scandal. If you continue to demand that a particular metric be improved, don’t be surprised when employees do “whatever it takes” to make it happen.

Flight school director is right. No one in their right mind will want to learn how to fly a plane from somebody who can’t even order a drink. No offense bud, but you’re very young. You need to cut your teeth first. There’s no shortcuts in this field.

Disagree. Only fools try to do everything by email. Cant tell you how many awkward introvert engineers I’ve seen taking days to troubleshoot an issue over email that could have been solved with a 20 minute phone call. Literally want to yell at them to put on their big boy pants and pick up the phone.

Just inherited a network. No documentation. The admin password is "Password123".

Honestly this sounds fun to me. I’d get a big ass Excel sheet going with everything that’s a problem, ranked by priority, why it’s an issue, and then everything you are doing to mitigate the damage. Then start blasting out monthly updates to all the execs. If you do this right, you could use your visibility big time and turn this into a VP role.

Correction: The Microsoft Support that YOU get access to is shit. If you’re a key customer or partner, you get access to the good engineers. If you’re a small fry or nobody, you get the contractors from India.

How do you guys actually make tech decisions without endless debates?

Posted by Responsible-Shop3537@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 33 comments

thenewguyonreddit@reddit

Decisions by committee is always a disaster. You need a “Steve Jobs” aka a final decision maker in your team. The steering committee‘s job is to put together the weighted analysis and present their final recommendations with additional alternative choices. The decision maker’s job is to pick one by a certain date and accept responsibility for the choice.
