How do you personally change gears in a manual transmission?

Raced cars as a kid too so I learned on my pops Harley at 14 before he threw me in a legends car(Yamaha 1200 motor with sequential shift). Dropped the bike on myself because my hand was too small to fully engage the clutch when I stopped. He was more concerned about if I scratched the bike than was hurt 🤣

Yeah I thought about it right after I posted and realized I completely forgot about no lift shifts. Never used one myself. Some racecars are set up where you only use the clutch to take off but I don’t really know how they work

VW’s ID Buzz Electric Microbus Is Dead for 2026—but It’s Not Gone for Good

That my experience with VW in general. Set up a drive of the ID.4 when it was pretty new and I was shopping cars. Scheduled it and showed my pre approval. When I got there the clown acted like I was a 16 year old trying to test drive a cayman GT4. The car didn’t impress me but I wouldn’t have bought if it did after that experience. Only have ever had horrible experiences dealing with VW dealers. The previous ones realized I had a stupid good job for my age and we’re crazy pushing the GTIs and Rs. This one treated me like a broke boy even though I coulda walked out paying cash. Fuck em

I went from driving a focus ST to a truck when the second was coming. Entirely different type of driving experience but still fun. Now I’m towing toys like boat and RV instead of eating up corners. Pretty fun to be able to run stuff over and do some off roading though

Have you found that you care a lot less about super cars as you’ve gotten older?

Posted by Colalbsmi@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 852 comments

teeksquad@reddit

As I’ve gotten older 2 things have occurred. 1. )I’ve learned you can realistically have more fun driving a slow car fast than a fast car slow while I have no interest in putting others lives at risk. My focus St was a blast from stop light to stop light while barely breaching speed limits. 2.) Priorities. I am in the realm of could afford one if I sacrificed and prioritized a nicer car and I have 0 interest. I have a family now and would much rather put them in a nice house/ school system. The next “fun” expensive thing I buy will likely be a racing go kart for my boys well before I buy something fun for me. I’ll get myself a little Miata like car when my boys are out of the house and go the geezer with a sports car route when I finally let myself spend money for me again.

I raced go karts as a kid and the fastest one I had by far (won 5 straight championships and some a state title so was decent at minimum) was super flexible. The left front tire was off the ground until I got in the kart by like a solid inch. This was oval racing so it made sense. It’s a thing in bigger race cars too. I’m not super surprised that it’s making its way to street cars now

These jokes are so funny to me considering I had chronic gut issues that lead to an emergency surgery to remove a chunk of my colon and T bell is the only fast food other than Chick fil that I can tolerate. Im doing much better with my gut now but it was one of the few safe places for me to eat other than food i prepped myself. Just about anything else lead to blood and severe pain. I just gotta walk into a Burger King and I’m on a toilet all night. McDonald is the opposite though and makes me feel like I’m going to explode for 2 days.

Here's Why It's Taking Automakers Ages to Put Buttons Back in Cars

Posted by TripleShotPls@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 146 comments

Rentals are the best example of how horrible the current UI of cars are. I have been in a couple rental from GM this year and the wheels were comically unintuitive. The volume buttons like paddle shifters are dumb as shit and take thought on what would be up and down vs the song skip buttons on the other hand. Hated everything about the button placements and infotainment in both vehicles.

My ST was the perfect city car. A blast to zip from light to light without going ridiculous speeds. It’s a bit manic and wild feeling at lower speeds and puts a smile on your face without the need to blow past speed limits. 2022 is most recent data I can find for this individual. Make over double what he made then at least. Did find a nice little article about how he fatally shot a 15 year old in the head while he was on the ground in 2017 though so I think I’m done looking any further into my neighbors.

I can find for state employees but I’m not seeing for the city he works for (Gary Indiana). I did look up when his house was purchased and that is a ton of it. I paid 40 percent down which got me close to owing what his total purchase was in 2017. Being a couple years older would sure have made life easier for those milestones. People younger than me (32) are playing life on super hard mode. I should count myself lucky I got into the market before it got out of reach.

The rate is definitely a large part of it, but I got really lucky in that both my wife and I were homeowners for the major jump and got to double dip on sales of our houses. We likely have a higher rate (5.5) but we both made good money on our first homes and put almost 40 percent down on the house.

I don’t judge but I really don’t understand it. I have a really good job with a massively valuable company and yet I’m living in a neighborhood full of cops. The guy across the street from me has 2 trucks (one of which he appears to only use to pull his camper), camper and his wife has a pretty new blazer. AND his house is bigger than mine. I’m on pace to make DOUBLE the average salary of his police department this year with a really fortunate bonus and still have plenty of financial stress. He’s a bit older than me (I am definitely one of the youngest in my neighborhood) but it still doesn’t seem feasible for all these cops to be making ends meet unless the statistics on what they make are severely out of date

Why aren't more people talking about Ford and Stellantis abandoning the compact SUV segment in the US? Imo it's a mind-boggling decision not to offer any models in this extremely popular segment.

I drove a new rental ST line last year and the thing was awful in every way. I recently had to part with my focus ST to accommodate my growing family and was excited to see what the ST line escape was and it was truly the worst driving experience I’ve ever had. Somehow felt smaller than my focus on the inside, had anemic power, and barely fit the car seat. Truly felt smaller than my focus somehow from the inside. The button placements were all awkward and materials felt super cheap like made previous rental versas feel nice, It made me really appreciate the wife’s rav4 for what it is. As a bit of a Ford fanboy I guess (3/4 cars I’ve owned and all I’ve purchased have been Fords). I could never see myself driving one even if offered one for free. I’ve never hated a car I drove more than that escape

You’re right on the torque It’s the CIA, they should go hardcore. Start em on a heavy old Harley, that was my dad’s brilliant idea. I was 13 and he wanted to teach me how clutches work for a race car he was putting me in. Problem was that my hand wasn’t big enough to get the clutch fully engaged so when I tried to stop I locked up the front tire on gravel and dropped in on myself. He ran over and made sure I didn’t scratch the bike before deciding the old jeep was a better idea lmao. Didn’t give a flying fuck about my burnt ankle

You can certainly learn the basics on anything but it’s an entirely different beast driving and underpowered stick vs something with power. I learned on a shitbox jeep that took finesse then got a focus ST later on that I could let friends drive because it was so much for forgiving on not stalling out if you dump the clutch too fast. They need a shitbox to teach them finding the friction plate. It took me a bit of relearning when I rented a little underpowered car in Costa Rica even though I drove a manual exclusively for the years leading up to the rental. I would imagine a black wing is even more forgiving of dumping the clutch too fast

Because it was a two door SUB with essentially no trunk space thanks to the drop top. It has no extra practicality over any over convertible and was just higher. It was also pretty damn expensive at the time

Great idea. Even a push mower. You learn those and your ready to start building go kart motors. They have changed to overhead cam clones these days but when I was a kid racing karts, they were primarily the flathead 5 hp Briggs from old lawn mowers. That’s how my mechanic pops taught me the motors as a kid.
