Neglect that causes your child to be kidnapped and probably raped and murdered isn't the same as stabbing someone and feeling regret you absolute plonker. And yeah I got the thing wrong so I corrected it. It's not the 'gotcha' you think it is.

The same reason that people know it's probably a bad idea to smoke but because the effects aren't immediate you just live in denial The lockdowns weren't unnecessary, they were required because hospitals were getting completely overrun with COVID related shit, meaning all the other stuff had to take a back seat: cancer, major injuries, surgery, ongoing treatment etc They basically needed the toddler to be strapped in the highchair so that it didn't hurt itself because they were busy tending to the baby with a serious respiratory illness. And the populace was like "but *I'm* not gonna hurt myself so why do *I* have to sit in the highchair?" And in the majority of cases that was true, but in some cases the toddler toddled over to the baby and licked their face and also got ill, or they tripped on a block and cracked their head open, or they ate a load of pink paracetamol thinking they were smarties, or they had overexposure to short chain PFOAs meaning they developed cancer and needed treatment or whatever the fuck and now you've got a baby with a life threatening respiratory illness and a seriously injured or maybe dying toddler and you don't have enough hands to help both and you're having a nervous breakdown and maybe you're gonna crash out of the profession of parenthood altogether (holy run on sentence Batman). And so we had party gate because the people who make the rules are somewhat akin to toddlers.

He didn't actually die, but he did suffer extreme brain damage that gave him a serious speech impediment; the CIA then kept him underground in a laboratory to experiment on him with culturally subversive brainwashing techniques - the goal was to instil in him alternative views to mainstream narratives to see if they could achieve the same thing with Russian citizens to destabilise Russia. The experiments were a success and an unexpected side effect was an extended lifespan, but unfortunately his identity became confused and he couldn't remember exactly who he was. In his confusion he escaped, and was accepted back into the family who agreed for his own mental wellbeing to humour his new identity... And in February 2025 he was appointed as the US Secretary of Health.

They made a mistake, the consequences of which were absolutely monumental. Argue all you like, but sending the children into the foster care system after their sister was kidnapped and their family was in the public spotlight for decades is probably not in anyone's best interest, let alone the siblings.

I think having your child kidnapped and probably murdered and raped due to your negligence and never actually knowing what happened to her is punishment enough, like what benefit to society is that going to have? The justice system should serve to benefit society (by dissuading re-offence, protecting the public etc) not just provide punishment for the sake of it.

I personally feel like it was *somewhat* negligent, but I have a lot of sympathy for them. They were in a resort that it seems they *felt* was enclosed (even though it wasn't really), so they probably felt like it was pretty safe. My kid is a great sleeper and can happily put himself back to sleep. Once he's in bed and settled for the evening we haven't ever needed to check in on him or anything like that. At home I leave him in his room and go to the office at the end of the garden. I can see how the parents felt like it was safe enough to leave the kids. If something like this hadn't happened so publicly, I could definitely see it being something that I did after I'd had a couple beers and my inhibitions were reduced - the difference is my wife (who doesn't drink) would be having absolutely none of it. It's very easy to say what they should have done - that's clear now. They absolutely were negligent, but how many parents all around the world have done the same thing and nothing bad has happened? Probably millions. It was a very preventable freak occurrence. I feel very sorry for them.

>If it's a degrading thing to pay for sex and something to be looked down on, do you feel the same way about selling sex? For what it's worth, yes personally I do think it's pretty sad to sell sex. Like you were born into the world with a mind, and all you have to offer the world is your objectified body and the genetics you were born with. That's kinda lame.

How do you feel about employers asking for a full return to working in the office?

Posted by Delicious-Program-50@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 556 comments

postvolta@reddit

I'm absolutely fine going to the office *for a purpose*. I do training sessions and if the team I'm training wants it in person I'm happy to do it. I recently went to a strategy planning meeting and one of the colleagues said how valuable they found it because it was in person (which I was ambivalent about). An outcome was to form a quarterly meeting on a particular topic with various stakeholders and they suggested that instead of doing it in person we should do it in teams because it's hard to get everyone in the same room... Personally I don't need to be in a room full of people to communicate well and get stuff done. In fact I find it massively distracting and unproductive, even if it is quite nice. Unfortunately there are people that ruin remote work for others: never answer emails, never respond to messages, always seem to be busy but nothing ever gets done. And so that brush is used to tar other remote workers. I pride myself on my availability. I'll answer Teams messages instantly, if you want a chat I'll pick up the phone as soon as I can, my calendar is completely visible to anyone in the company and is accurate, etc. I don't need to be in person to be productive and communicate effectively. I've got friends I've had for decades that I've never actually met. I have two kids and a dog and I'd rather spend the 1h30m I'd be commuting on tending to my family's needs, not the needs of newly divorced alt right Rob who wants to talk about Diary of a CEO, 'growth mindset' and his fucking dating life.

But at the same time, it's a business and it's a business transaction. In the same way that you owe them nothing more than the job you are being paid to do, they owe you nothing more than the remuneration that you agreed upon. In an ideal world we'd live in a world where businesses were co-owned by their employees who had a vested interest in doing what's best for themselves but we don't, so businesses do what's best for shareholders. Sure it'd be nice if businesses did constant evaluations of what they're paying employees vs the market to ensure their salaries were constantly competitive but that's just not reflective of the world we live in. I don't necessarily think it makes them a shitty employer. But I agree with you on the principle of never accepting a counter offer because I feel that unless you have been headhunted it shows your employer that you've got one foot out the door so they're going to be looking at you differently.

The pedestrian is *leaving* the pavement and *entering* the road. I'd say my argument makes perfect sense and is why the change to the code is illogical and dangerous. It's got nothing to do with driver entitlement, which definitely exists.

Does anyone follow the highway code?

Posted by Affectionate_Debt269@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 573 comments

postvolta@reddit

On this occasion I really don't think entitlement of drivers is applicable. The road continues but the pedestrian walkway doesn't. The pedestrian crosses an *actual* road, whereas the driver is crossing an invisible pedestrian crossing. If you want to roll this change out properly you need to put zebra crossings on every single T junction... Not sure that's a valuable use of taxes, personally.

Does anyone follow the highway code?

Posted by Affectionate_Debt269@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 573 comments

postvolta@reddit

It's a fucking stupid change to the rule because: * The road continues while the pedestrian walkway does not; the pedestrian walkway continuing is something that requires your imagination * This gives the impression to unaware road and path users that the pedestrian does *not* have the right of way * If a pedestrian attempts to exert their right of way to a car driver, who is going to win the fight? Obviously the car to potentially massive damage to the pedestrian * If a road user attempts to give way to a pedestrian unaware they have right of way, then you now have a standoff where you're asking the pedestrian to take a leap of faith * As a pedestrian you have to be defensive because you're risking your body against metal and you'll always lose - I know I have right of way but I'm not about to try and exert that right against a driver The whole thing is fucking stupid. I agree with the rule in principle, but this is a rule that you implement when you invent roads and cars, not 100 years later. That the road user has right of way is too deeply engrained and improper awareness can cause potentially catastrophic damage to pedestrians. Yes, it is deeply fucking stupid. Just leave it as it was - it was far safer for the pedestrian.

It's definitely both. My brother has severe learning disabilities that his employer knew about when employing him as a labourer. He was called retarded on an almost daily basis. Got mates in the trades and the stories they tell about the shit they have to listen to on a daily basis is ridiculous. I worked with a guy when I was 16 who would make lewd comments about the tits of schoolgirls several years younger than me as we drove past in his van, and he was the fucking owner. Workplace bullying, sexual harassment, huge egos, and other completely inappropriate conduct in the trades is completely out of control. No wonder there's a shortage of labour. You obviously know the industry way better than me but all I needed was a few months of labouring on various sites to know I needed to do whatever the fuck I had to do to not get employment in the trades.

Got cornered by a guy who was fully invested in the idea that the only reason we think that what Putin is doing is bad is because we have different cultures, and that the morals of invading a sovereign country and committing genocide on its people (by way of stealing their children and integrating them into a different culture) is completely subjective and I only think it's bad because I live in the West. He also added that Putin has some pretty good ideas. Which I'd add is probably true but it's just a fucking weird thing to say at work. Like saying Hitler was actually super ethical with regards to animals as he was a vegetarian and he was a really good painter, or that Jimmy Saville was super charitable and donated to loads of organisations and helped thousands of kids. He also started giving me unsolicited parenting advice about instilling in my kids a 'growth mindset' and suggesting I check out the Diary of a CEO podcast. I actively avoid him. The guy fucking sucks.

I went to therapy every week for about 6 months and I just decided that I had gotten everything I needed from therapy. Having someone to talk to every week about anything I wanted was really therapeutic, which I guess is in and of itself quite nice, but it wasn't helping me any more. It's like having a personal trainer. After a few months you have probably learned enough to do it by yourself.
