Would you support a national bedtime?

I don't mean as a law or anything. You'd be free to ignore it if you wanted. But if you signed up you'd get money off bills, Clubcard points, diplomatic immunity, things like that. There'd be a bedtime story each day, read by a public figure, and all you'd have to do would be to get a good night's sleep and be in bed by say, 9:45pm?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Tesco for lowering the cost of a meal deal £3.60 with a Clubcard deal. And only last year, he reflected, it had been announced that the price was to be RAISED to £3.60. Was it possible that they swallowed that, after only a few months? Yes, they swallowed it. They even swallowed the falafel and houmous snack, which as everyone knows, is drier than Gandhi’s flip-flops.”

"You can have this milk for £6, or the usual £1 if you give us all your data and let us sell it!"
And I can prove they're selling it; my niece came over months ago, I bought some of those kids fruit pouch things, cus she likes them.
For weeks I was being offered baby products on Amazon. I don't have kids.
That was the only thing I've ever bought that vaguely suggests I'm interested in baby products.

It's it just more like the Costco model, where it's a membership store. Except they give membership away for free, and also you can still shop there as a non-member, it just costs more.
I don't get the outrage at Tesco but not Costco or Toolstation
NYX_T_RYX@reddit
Cus with Costco, it's always been clear you're paying to get in and get stuff cheaper (sometimes)
I wouldn't mind Tesco as much if they
A. Paid their staff a living wage (my big objection TBF) B. Had cheaper fuel, like Costco does
I've gotta buy food somewhere, sure, but it doesn't have to be there; there's plenty of shops that aren't basically forcing you to let them sell your data just to buy toilet roll 🤷♂️
whooptheretis@reddit
Exactly, so don’t go to Tesco. But don’t single out Tesco without criticising the likes of Costco and Toolstation.
NYX_T_RYX@reddit
Costco haven't been reported in news for not paying their staff fairly. I have literally 0 cares about Toolstation.
I'll complain about inequality every day, until everyone is treated fairly.
whooptheretis@reddit
That’s fair enough, but it’s got nothing to do with their club card.
NYX_T_RYX@reddit

whooptheretis@reddit

Diplomatic immunity for going to bed at 9.45? I'm confused. So if you go to bed at that time you can't be prosecuted for a crime, and are free to do whatever crime you want? Is this a serious question
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
A lot of lawbreakers probably act the way they do because they haven't gotten enough sleep. I reckon if we implement a national bedtime, we wouldn't even need that many laws anymore.
PopNo1696@reddit
Just one, if you're still up past 9.45 you're a wrong un and belong in a dungeon, you plainly love the dark anyway
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Yes, and yes. We'll sort of. You'd only get diplomatic immunity if you committed crimes abroad. You couldn't be prosecuted in the country where you committed crimes (that doesn't include this one). Maybe that's not what diplomatic immunity means, but that's what I'm thinking.

nickspeeed@reddit
Hi, I'm good thanks, how are you?
Internet-Dick-Joke@reddit
I don't think that you understand how diplomatic immunity works.
Firstly, the UK can't just unilaterally grant someone diplomatic immunity in a foreign country - there has to be an agreement from both countries for it to be granted.
Secondly, diplomatic immunity typically doesn't just apply to all crimes. It applies to certain categories of crimes, and crimes committed as part of the job, such as espionage charges. It does not mean that you can just drive around murdering people and get away with it.
And thirdly, why on earth would going to bed early in the UK make it okay for someone to then go and commit crimes in Spain? Oh, here, I'll go to bed early tonight and then I can just hop on the Eurostar to Paris in the morning and go cafe to cafe stealing baguettes. Like, where the fuck is the logic there?
bebelmatman@reddit
Uh oh, someone’s getting grumpy. Bedtime for you, I think.
Internet-Dick-Joke@reddit
Not for at least another hour mate. But if you actually want to see me grumpy, wait until you get me posting on a day when I've been forced to get up before 8:00am. Now that is a time where I would need a free pass to commit crime.
minisrugbycoach@reddit
Soooo, go to bed early each night in this country, then once a year go to Spain and act out the purge knowing you'll be ok because you stick to the curfew at home.

I have 2 early 20’s male colleagues who every day without fail between 9am-12when we start work moan out loud all morning how tired they are and they are starving and can’t wait for lunch always wanting to go first.
I always ask if they had breakfast knowing they’ll say no 99.99% they say along lines of “I woke up at 8:30 for my 9:00 shift I’ve not got time for breakfast!” Whist im waking up 7:30 to get kids fed to school and myself fed and to work.

Best I can do is occasionally getting confused and either a) going to bed at 6pm and waking up at 2am or b) getting stuck sleeping in two blocks of four hours because I accidentally took a four hour nap one day.

Oh fuck, I did nights for a year (never again) and 3am was the absolute worst. I am not a night owl in any shape or form, and min, I thought I was a gonner. I would get to 3 and would literally start to fall asleep standing up. It was bakery work so all physical, and my work mates would know I'd fallen asleep because I would just... stop. I'd be stood there with my eyes shut swaying slightly. I didn't sleep in the day because it was too loud and bright, and I didn't sleep at night because work. I was a husk. I've never felt more like a zombie in my life.
It would be so fucking awesome if people were allowed to work to their own circadian rhythms, because it is absolute *hell* when you can't.

Don't get me started on "flexible working".
You start at 7am and finish at 3:30pm? You are passionate, driven, one to watch, team player, self-starter, ambitious, a star asset.
You start at 10:30am and finish at 7pm? Lazy, disorganised, hard to get hold of, good evening, PIP for timekeeping.
NeverCadburys@reddit
This is why the push to get disabled people into work without change of of infrastructure is so dangerous. If we're going to get into work, we need true flexi working hours. Hell i'm finishing my studies, part time, with the OU where the week goes between Saturday and Friday and as long as we get the 16-20 (feels like more) hours done in that time we're keeping up okay, but sickness gets in the way, hospital appointment gets in the way. I want to work, and clearly i'm capable of something if I can study, but when you can piss off your whole department by not getting out of bed until 11 and needing to go back to bed at 2, even with the adjsutment of flexi working hours, and days off for hospital appointments the week a project is due, it's obvious it's not about getting us into a workplace, but just off benefits.
postvolta@reddit
As someone whose kids get him up at 5am, being able to start at 7am is an absolute blessing. If I had to start at 9 or later I'd feel like I had already put in a full day of work just sorting the kids out haha.
ClingerOn@reddit
Fucking hell Redditors will play the victim over everything. No one actually thinks they’re better for going to bed early.
glasgowgeg@reddit
You've obviously never worked shifts and accused of being "lazy" for still being asleep at 11am when you don't start work until 3pm.
asthecrowruns@reddit
It is crazy that so many people gain a sense of superiority over a genetic predisposition to a certain habit, when having a community split between morning birds, night owls, and neither, literally has an evolutionary advantage. Even in society today, you need early birds and night workers. It’s beneficial to have people who prefer different hours of productivity in many jobs.
Like, dude… I can’t help that my natural sleeping is 1am till 10am. Im just as productive, I still work and have hobbies and clean and shop and see friends and all that. I just prefer a job that’s later in the day when I’m more awake, starting mid day and finishing in the evening. Im just more productive in the evening. It’s not that I won’t work other hours, but I prefer it that way.
Impressive-Chart-483@reddit
I find that as I get older, I need less sleep. Which sucks, as I love sleep.
I've always been a go-to-bed-when-tired kinda guy, which usually ends up being around 1-2am and could sleep until 10am to midday if no alarm.
I still do go to bed late (sometimes even later), but find myself waking up again around 7am naturally now. I rarely sleep more than 6 hours. For reference, I turn half a century next year.
I hope it doesn't continue the trend, else by the time I retire there won't be much sleeping at all 😢
Defiant-Ad1432@reddit
Nah, there is nothing worse than a convert. I was always a "stay up late" person 1am bed even when working. Then at the ripe age of 40 I decided to try and change that. I am now a 9pm to bed 5am awake person, even at weekends. My sense of superiority is all the sweeter knowing I had to fight my natural instincts to achieve this.

KeyJunket1175@reddit
It's just biology. Being in sync with how your body works is efficient, so yes, superior to being out of sync... Similar reason why dinner shouldn't be your main big meal, and why it should be at least 4 hours before you go to sleep. Metabolism affects your sleep.
It's pretty easy to test for yourself, or just look at Mark Wahlberg's instagram - if you don't want to research the topic.
Cryten56@reddit
One of my life goals is to become a morning person, I genuinely think I would feel more fulfilled if I spent most of my day in daylight. But maybe I'm just buying into the prestige that the morning people seem to give off.
Nice_Back_9977@reddit
I’m a natural night owl but I do find I naturally wake up earlier in summer by sleeping with the curtains open and letting the daylight in, and that’s nice.
blackskies4646@reddit
Waking up early often feels like a cheat code of sorts if you have a regular 'bed time' until you realise that going to sleep at 3-4am and waking around midday is the superior option.
karma3001@reddit
You seem a bit grumpy. I’d suggest earlier nights and more sleep if you can.
Karloss_93@reddit
Jokes on them I go to bed late and rise early!

ColdShadowKaz@reddit
Same but no one believes me and everyone tries to force me into their bedtime routine.
Patient_Debate3524@reddit
Sounds like the sort of thing that could happen in China lol.
DietSoft6792@reddit
It's ironic to hear someone say this because I live in China and one of my favourite things about the country is how much more liberal they are than us about bedtime. There's way less nannying from the state about when everything should be shut at night.
Where I am in south western China young kids play out until 10pm and I can go out and get a full meal in a restaurant at 4am should I want to. Many shops are 24/7 and there's a few bars on my local shopping street that are open until 5-7am every night.
Back home in London the city completely dies at night: people would be complaining about the noise the kids make, and the local council would have taken away all the late licenses for the bars and restaurants, forcing them to shut at midnight due to noise complaints. The only food you could get at 4 would be a petrol station sandwich.
The UK definitely has more of a curfew culture than China does!
textzenith@reddit
Why does that sound so much better than here?
I love 4am restaurant visits!
ColdShadowKaz@reddit
I wonder if the whole needing silence to sleep is partly from childhood sleep hygiene(babies asleep nothing disturbed baby!) and partly because people are going against their genetic disposition. Needing very specific conditions to sleep at night that affect other people seems a bit much. And everyone is encouraged to have such an extensive bedtime routine yet a lot of people can’t sleep at night and still nap on and off all day. Perhaps China is doing things the right way.
ampmz@reddit
Why not start the day with some group exercise too?
Patient_Debate3524@reddit

Interesting-Pea-9702@reddit
a national bedtime would kill me. i get off school and work and get home around 7 every day. if i be in bed by 9:45 when am i gonna have time to watch my movies, take an everything shower, or do my abnormally time consuming skincare???????????????????????????
originaldonkmeister@reddit
OP, out of interest what do you think the benefits would be of everyone going to bed at the same time, and why have you picked 21:45 in particular?
originaldonkmeister@reddit
I used to hate walking into work at 09:00, for the same smug twats to do the "nice of you to join us" and "it's almost lunchtime!' act, even though our flexi start time was 8:30 +/- 1 hour. So what I would support is a national punch people in the face for thinking that their sleeping hours make them superior to someone with different sleeping hours. Occasionally I did the "oh... Half day today?" whilst frowning at the clock routine when they left, for some reason they never find that funny.
Substantial-Put1056@reddit
A bit like the national tea time but with hot chocolate?
Sudden_Star_5130@reddit

Mrs_B-@reddit
Nope. Automatically excluded shift workers. Apart from that, sounds like something kids need more than adults.
Substantial_Will_948@reddit
How would it work for those on night shifts?
LiorahLights@reddit
As a chronic insomniac, hell no
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
You don't get what is being proposed - the bedtime is at 9:45, meaning you would be asleep by 9:45. So it's fine.
ToePsychological8709@reddit
That's right! Littering and cocaine illegal which is why we have no litter and nobody takes cocaine. Same with this
cochlearist@reddit
Speak for yourself.
I'm always dropping my cocaine in the street.
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
That's a really good point, but you accidentally responded to me rather than the original commenter.
Let me try and sum up/condense your thoughts: "Cocaine is illegal and therefore most people don't do it. Ignoring your government-sanctioned bedtime would also be illegal and therefore most people wouldn't do it."
I don't normally use analogies but I'll definitely be using this - thanks!
Jonoabbo@reddit
You sure about that?
vladimirepooptin@reddit
cocaine is expensive therefore most people don’t do it more like
Internet-Dick-Joke@reddit
Dude, they're an insomniac - they can't sleep even if they want to. What time you set their bedtime is kind of irrelevant to that fact, because they are an insomniac and can't sleep.
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
Well then as they're willfully breaking the rules, they would not be given any benefits.
Internet-Dick-Joke@reddit
But it wouldn't be "willfully" breaking the rules, because the definition of "willfully" is 'with intention', and someone with insomnia isn't intentionally staying awake - they literally don't have a choice because they physically can't sleep. Insomnia isn't a refusal to sleep, it is an inability to do so - that is literally the definition of insomnia.
Saying that someone with insomnia is "willfully" staying awake is like saying someone with a paralysis is "willfully" not moving the paralysed body part, or like, if I forget my glasses and am trying to order in a coffee shop, saying that I am 'willfully refusing to read the menu on the wall behind the counter', when I literally cannot read it because my eyes are shit.
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
If you forget your glasses then it is your fault. If I left my retinas at home, I wouldn't then turn around and complain about being blind.
Internet-Dick-Joke@reddit
Okay, so what if my glasses get stolen or damaged by no fault of my own? Then what?
It wouldn't be "willful" refusal to read the menu then, because it's something that I can't do through no fault of my own. So the "willful" argument isn't applicable here.
Now you could argue that my money isn't worth the effort of the barrister reading out the entire menu to me so that I can decide what I want, but that's a different argument entirely than me "willfully breaking the rules".
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
You willfully broke the rules by needing glasses. If you didn't need glasses then you wouldn't need glasses to read the rules. Why is this a hard concept for you to understand?
Internet-Dick-Joke@reddit
I don't think that you understand what that word means. The entire reason why I brought up the glasses comparison I was to point out how you are misusing the term "willfully".
Seriously, what you think the word "willfully" means? Pull out a dictionary and check. It means 'with conscious intention'. You cannot 'need' something (like glasses) or have an inability to do something (like with insomnia) willfully, because by definition those things (willfully vs need/inability) contradict each other.
You are using the word entirely incorrectly, I can only assume because you don't actually understand what it means, and in doing so undermining you whole point because it literally turns your opening sentence into a false sentence - "You broke the rules by needing glasses" can be a true statement, but "You willfully broke the rules by needing glasses" cannot because 'willfully' and 'need' are inherently contradictory. Why is this a hard concept for you to understand?
Just stop using that word since clearly you have no idea what it means.
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
You willfully needed glasses because you can't see stuff without them and there is a "will" to see which you can't do without your glasses - the ones you willfully neglected to wear. This js not a hard concept to understand unless you are very low IQ.

Jeezus no. We live in enough of a nanny state as it is. This would restrict, control and infantilise us even more.
TugMe4Cash@reddit
I know I won't get a reply, but I'd love to hear about how the UK gov "restricts, controls and infantilises" us soooo much.
Or is this just another right-wing talking point you heard on Facebook and are regurgitating? Let me guess, we need more privatisation, more CEOs, more billionaires?
I see comments like yours and it suddenly makes sense why the UK is in the shit hole it currently is. Literally all we've had in the past 40yrs is de-regulation for the elite and privatisation. And look at us now...
Impressive-Chart-483@reddit
London, UK has more CCTV per km squared than any other place outside of Asia.
A certain borough is installing facial recognition cameras on the high street. FR that has been proven to be especially inaccurate with regards to black people. Where is this, you ask? Croydon.
We have still failed to regulate E-scooters. Legal in many places worldwide, yet we still need more information. But feel free to hire one from our selected partners for the low low average price of £4 per journey. They aren't safe if you buy one though.
Cannabis is still illegal, despite being readily available, impossible to overdose on, and generally makes people mellow the fuck out. You may say it induces mania in some, which it does, especially when genetically predisposed. Yet alcohol is everywhere, legal, and taxed to the hilt, with worse mood altering effects.
We just bailed out Thames Water for £3b. To simply pay back some interest on debts and keep it afloat. No investment for years, huge fines for dumping waste in rivers due to under investment, but with record breaking dividends paid out to foreign investment groups. Half of our water bill goes on paying off debt. They wanted to increase it by over 50%. Regulators capped it at a little over 30%. Thames Water has stated that it may be able to start making plans to do some work in 2027, although possibly not until 2032.
We just tried to cut off disabled to save £5b in 5 years time. Sorry, what was your point again?
TugMe4Cash@reddit
It was either 'no reply', or a 'brain rot reply'. Looks like I received the latter. What was your point again? -what an ironic question, looks like you have trouble understanding what we are talking about. I'll try and be as simple and concise as possible.
London, UK has more CCTV per km - True but it's one certain 'borough', not the government. Again I'll ask; how does the UK gov "restrict, control and infantilise" us?
A certain borough is installing facial recognition - True, but it's one certain 'borough', not the government. Again I'll ask; how does the UK gov "restrict, control and infantilise" us.

TugMe4Cash@reddit
You gave invalid ones. Because you are choosing to deflect and confuse, instead of answering my simple questions. TBH I think you are struggling to understand what the basic English words "restrict, control and infantilise" mean lol.
Let's take your E-scooter rant. Failing to regulate e-scooters DOES NOT EQUAL restrict, control and infantilise. If you believe this to be incorrect, you now have the floor to explain how it does... Let's see the nonsense you come up with.
Dyrenforth@reddit
Sigh, just one example for each: restrictions on what can be protested, control of media reporting and framing, infantilising with dumbed down television, which has reached as far as Newsnight.
But hey, keep on trolling and being offensive.
Impressive-Chart-483@reddit
How is refusing to legislate on something that's been legal elsewhere for years, while allowing private rentals not restricting, controlling and "infantilising" us?

KelpFox05@reddit
No, this is pretty stupid for lots of reasons. Humans naturally have a wide range of waking hours for evolutionary reasons, when we were hunter-gatherer tribes living out of caves you'd want several people to be awake at all hours in order to watch out for predators. Most people have waking hours during daylight because that's when it's easiest to do most things, especially pre-artificial light, but it's totally normal and natural to have waking hours overnight.
It's also very normal to have biphasic or even triphasic sleep, where you wake for an interval between chunks of sleep. It was only in the 1800s and 1900s, with the advent of capitalism, factories, and shift work, did it become the "normal" thing for everybody to sleep in one long period solely overnight.
Life is already very hard for people with overnight waking hours who essentially have to force themselves into an unnatural sleep pattern, causing physiological stress and shortening their lives, if they want to have a good job, a social life, or even go shopping. Making life cheaper for people lucky enough to have daytime waking hours is pretty authoritarian and honestly weird.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)

🤔 We're still clapping?
BJ made us look like idiots, made us clap and refused to pay the NHS workers a fair pay rise... I remember opening my door and seeing everyone on the street coming out to clap and then not really knowing when to stop... My next door neighbour kept the clapping going as long as she could... She lived alone (well, plus two cats).
I sometimes wonder if people did it in genuine appreciation or more because it created a sense of community at a time we were all so isolated from each other.... Because if it was genuine appreciation, how did the government at the time get away with all the thieving and mishandling, and how is it that we have moved on so quickly from that period in our lives...
I was very close to the front line directly supporting nurses, doctors and also involved in the Oxford trial... It was a horrendous time but we all just seem to have forgotten about it, or have actively chosen to forget about it... Instead we seem to be preoccupied with boat crossings and definitions of women!
God help society...
End of rant!

I'm very proud of my grass and my garden. To the point that it has to look immaculate otherwise I get very angsty. So with working late during lockdown I didn't get much chance to maintain it.
I usually use either a ride on or the push petrol, but during lockdown we bought a battery mower so I could do it later without upsetting the neighbour. It's a very quiet mower, although it does take 4 batteries to cut the whole lawn.

KeyJunket1175@reddit
This is the first time I've heard about this. It sounds like someone implemented the "press E for thoughts and prayers" meme in real life. It's kinda silly...
clarkey_jet@reddit
For the first few weeks I found it genuinely moving because it was a little bit of community spirit and connection in a time that was very lonely for me. The longer it went on, the more perfunctory it felt. I remember one week a neighbour opposite opened their door made no more than 10 slow claps then went back in. It was sad to see it fizzle out. It was an absolute disgrace that NHS staff didn’t get the pay rise they deserved.
newbracelet@reddit
My sister got harassed by a neighbour for not clapping. She was literally nursing people as they died of covid, and was at one point very very sick with it herself but obviously clapping on the doorstep would have been much more helpful!

macyyxx@reddit
A national bedtime sounds fun in theory, but it’s a bit unrealistic for a lot of people with different schedules. While incentives like bill discounts or points are appealing, forcing a set bedtime could feel restrictive. Sleep is important, but people should have the freedom to manage it in their own way.
Hyperion2023@reddit
I support a scheme like this, but instead you set your individual bedtime.
I guess it would be monitored via watch/app which is pretty sinister, but half the time people are monitoring themselves this way anyway. At least you get something out of your self-surveillance while you’re dishing out data to whoever.
So if you overshoot your bedtime by not turning off the light and keeping still, or if pick your phone up again past the cutoff time, you lose the points or benefits or whatever.
YeahOkIGuess99@reddit
Are you insane

If it were to help us stop mindlessly scrolling then sure, but we can do that in bed. I'd support some kind of device curfew, where only emergency calls can come through and we can't use TV/laptop/tablet/whatever, but it would have to be voluntary, and we could all do it ourselves now if we want to and have sufficient willpower. I see the value in a reduction of tech use, I don't see the value of having us in bed by an arbitrary time.

Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
So bills would be more expensive for someone who works nights?
Sure. Fuck 'em. I love me a snoozy snooze.
glasgowgeg@reddit
If I was being financially penalised for working night shifts, I would immediately stop giving a fuck about how much noise I make overnight when others are sleeping.
Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
You're looking at it all wrong, you're not being penalised. Yours is the normality. The rest of us are simply being incentivised to sleep at night.
The fact that you'd try to ruin that for people says a lot about you.
glasgowgeg@reddit
If the majority work hours that permit the incentive, then those who cannot get the incentive are being penalised.
Like I said, I would immediately stop trying to be as quiet as possible overnight if I was being penalised for having to work nights/unsocial hours.
What would my incentive to be respectful of others be, when they're receiving a financial incentive? They can consider the additional noise interrupting their sleep as the cost of their financial benefit.
Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
Common decency?
It's not a matter of can it cannot. It's a choice. If you choose to keep working nights then you choose not to benefit from the incentives. You then make the choice to blame those who do for you not benefitting. You see how this is all a "you" issue? And yet your response is to try to make others suffer. Interesting.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Common decency would not be excluding those who do some of the arguably most important jobs in the country a financial incentive because their working hours don't conform to your ideal waking hours.
It's not a choice though. We have jobs that need to be done 24/7, whether that's emergency services, healthcare, systems support for critical infrastructure, logistics and shipping, etc.
You see how when I start making more noise at 3am and wake you up repeatedly because I have no incentive to be respectful of others who gain a financial benefit that is all a "you" issue?
FreeSupermarket7592@reddit
See, all you're doing is proving that you're exactly the type of person to look at people benefitting from a corrupt system. Then, instead of being angry at the system, you take your anger out on those trying to make the best of a shit situation.
Again, says a lot about you.
audigex@reddit
Better hope your next medical emergency happens before curfew, then - nurses already can't afford their bills, there's nae fucking chance they're doing a night shift in exchange for higher bills!
Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
Well if it comes after curfew then I'll be asleep, won't I? And if I die in my sleep then I won't even know about it. Sounds like a win-win to me.
audigex@reddit
Or you'll have 9 hours of dying in agony while getting our "Sorry lads we're closed, the chipper morning people will be here around 8:30am. In the meantime, have you considered a paracetamol?" answering machine
Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
Ah, you're one of them. Now it makes sense.
I'm sorry my good night's sleep, financial savings and clubcard points offend you. Maybe you should have re-thought your career before this completely made-up scenario became a hypothetical situation on a Reddit thread.
glasgowgeg@reddit
You think it's a made up scenario that people wait for hours at a hospital?
Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
Where did I say that?
This whole hypothetical is a made up scenario of diplomatic immunity and clubcard points in exchange for sleeping at nighttime. Keep up, son.
glasgowgeg@reddit
The person you replied to describes a scenario where you need to wait in a hospital, just to be told "Sorry lads we're closed, the overly-cheerful morning people will be here around 8:30am".
You then accused them of a "completely made-up scenario".
Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
I accused nobody of anything, friend.
The made-up scenario is that of which I am in need of medical assistance during my government appointed restful night's sleep in exchange for cheaper utilities. What part are you struggling to understand? I can break it down in simple terms if you like.
glasgowgeg@reddit
I quoted you saying it.
Ah right, so you've just not understood their comment.
Their comment, since you haven't understood it properly, is that you require medical assistance during normal waking hours. The wait for assistance is so long that you are still waiting when the staff say "Actually, we're finished now because of the government appointed restful nights sleep, you now need to wait until tomorrow".
The snarky "I can break it down in simple terms if you like" is actually more effective when you've correctly understood the premise being discussed.
FreeSupermarket7592@reddit
You do realise blocking me doesn't help your argument, don't you?
Their comment mentions being "closed" because the medical emergency is taking place during the curfew. Hence the mention of no chance of nurses picking up night shifts.
If you're really going to try to dig at reading comprehension, get yourself in check first, buddy.
You've created a side story from a scenario posed by someone else. Maybe just reading along and getting involved in the, quite obvious, joke-y banter would be more productive than trying to twist narratives to make yourself sound "right".
audigex@reddit
You're taking this a little seriously, I was just throwing in an exaggerated "Yes but have you thought about..." scenario
Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
That's what you got from this? That I'm taking it seriously?
I'll agree it's clear that there's been some miscommunication but I can assure you I have taken no part of this remotely seriously.
That's why I'm still awake past curfew.
audigex@reddit
I didn't think you were at first but then I made a joke about a "Sorry you're dying, someone will be here in the morning, try a paracetamol" answerphone which is obviously nonsense and your reply seemed weirdly serious
Maybe I just missed the joke in your reply
Precipiceofasneeze@reddit
Yeah, I suppose I can see how it would be taken that way.
No seriousness here though, and no offence intended at all.
audigex@reddit
Sounds like we've just gotten our wires crossed a little, then

To improve mental health
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
EXACTLY.
elementmg@reddit
So do you think the world just stops when you go to sleep or what? Like are people really so short sighted they can’t understand that there needs to be people working at all hours of the day to keep the world functioning? Do you think no one works nights? What the heck kind of thought process is this? Surely you haven’t thought this through in any way.
StonedMason85@reddit
My mental health improved massively when I started to work nights, so how would this national bedtime help me in that respect? This would never be something that could be applied to everyone because we are all different and have our own natural rhythms? If we are setting a national bedtime, do we then need to set a national alarm clock to wake up by? But everyone needs different amounts of sleep, so how would that work? If we acknowledge that everyone needs a different amount of sleep then we couldn’t have the bedtime as well as the alarm, so why not go with a national alarm and have everyone getting up at the same time instead? Either way I think it’s a daft idea that would only work for a minority of people, we have far too many different lifestyles. This sounds like it was thought of by someone who works 9-5 and still thinks the rest of the world all work 9-5.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It's not applied to everyone. It's optional. Like watching the world cup final. For it to mean something, everyone has to do it at the same time. And the more people do it, the more special it is.
StonedMason85@reddit
So I’m not special because I work nights but someone else is special because they can go to bed at the right time? My body is different to yours so I shouldn’t be entitled to benefits that other people are being offered? Wow! Discrimination against people with different circadian rhythms is a new one to me, but some people really will find anything they can to separate us all.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Who said anything about being special? Or discrimination? It's just an idea. Would you support it or not?
StonedMason85@reddit
You said special?! In your very last comment before this one? And no I definitely would not support something like this, it would never be inclusive enough to have my backing.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It includes anyone who wants to take part. You can't get more inclusive than that.
StonedMason85@reddit
Some people will be automatically excluded.. so that’s not inclusive.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Some people are automatically excluded from being in their 30s by being over 40, so being in your 30s isn't inclusive either.
StonedMason85@reddit
Your responses are nonsensical comparisons, I’m gonna give up at this point and stop responding after this one last time. Just picture yourself in this situation though - it’s 2am, you have a child who desperately needs medical attention, you ring 999 and no one answers so you get your child in the car and drive to the hospital (have to drive since there is no taxis) - but oh no, the hospital is closed! Because everyone thought it was such a good idea to go to bed at the same time, now suddenly there is no one working nights! What the fuck would you do with your extra clubcard points then?
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
This point makes no sense - the child would be sleeping, how could you possibly know they were sick? If everyone was sleeping we wouldn't need ambulances, think about it.
StonedMason85@reddit
So sometimes when people get sick it causes them to wake up? Or possibly not sleep in the first place? This guy was talking real world, not just a theoretical ideal one?
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
If the sick child wakes up then they would be violating the national bedtime, and would lose their benefits for that night.
StonedMason85@reddit
My point was that if the child was sick enough and no one worked at night time then the benefits wouldn’t matter to the child anymore since they’d be dead. This conversation is done for me now but have a good night.
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
If their parents and the NHS were asleep, the child would realise this and hunker down/conserve their energy until everyone woke up (he human body is capable of incredible feats under pressure) - plus, the NHS would probably do a better job of caring for them if the doctors were well-rested beforehand.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
I don't know, maybe but a sense of humour or enjoy some casual conversation? It's really up to you.
Fickle_Hope2574@reddit

afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Yeah I realise that now.
StonedMason85@reddit
And it is absolutely nothing like watching the World Cup final, watching a sports event usually either costs me money or is cost neutral, you are offering benefits for sleeping at the right time, how is that remotely similar?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It helps to foster a sense of unity among participants.
StonedMason85@reddit
So therefore alienating non participants…
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
That would be the other side of this coin, yes.
StonedMason85@reddit
And you support alienating people?
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
If I saw a green man who had arrived here on a flying saucer, I definitely would support them - whether that be with VISA applications, citizenship tests, etc.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
From what?
InYourAlaska@reddit
Okay, but how does it work? Is it per household? What if one person in the household works days and the other nights, do they only get a small discount on bills? Or does the day dweller then have to take all the bills on in their name?
What if you wake up in the night? Are you then in debt of a few pennies?
What if I lay in bed but don’t sleep? Does this still count for money off or am I cheating the system?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It's not like I have a comprehensive five year implementation plan or anything. I'm just gauging general interest.
InYourAlaska@reddit

TheJelqingGooner@reddit
How can you have bad mental health when sleeping? You would probably have more good mental health because you would have less time to think about sad or scary things.
Interrogatingthecat@reddit
You know how animals in zoos get depressed from a lack of stimulation and things to do?
That. If we don't do things, our mental health suffers. Compound that with the only thing we would hypothetically be doing is working (or things related to working) for the most part? Yeah no fuck that

No. It's bloody stupid.
First you'd have a thousand exceptions for Police, Fire, Ambulance, essential services, military.
Second people would sign up and then not do it. They'd be on their phones and all sorts.
Third you'd then have thousands of people "Reporting" their neighbours for staying up past bedtime and causing all sorts of agro.
Then you're also punishing the people who have to work all hours to make a living by putting them behind people who already have enough money that they can give up a couple of hours and still get free stuff.
I realise that this is probably a funny "What if..." but you posted it on AskUK so you get a serious answer. If you want the funny answers go to CasualUK.

Also people have different wake/sleep cycles naturally as well as as people's cycles changing with age. There's something to the stereotypes of teens sleeping in and elderly people being up at the crack of dawn.
Hmmark1984@reddit
Nope, I feel as someone who's naturally a "night owl" and if left to myself will inevitably end up being awake all night and sleeping during the day, I feel like the world is already "against" me enough without knowing most other people are also getting money off bills etc....
Lavidius@reddit
9:45? Are you my grandmother?
HighBye00@reddit
Nah, I am not into bed stories tbh
Sonicfan19198282@reddit
"a bedtime story each day, read by a public figure" We have that already. CBeebies Bedtime Stories.

zackjbryson@reddit
Usually when I go to bed that early I end up waking up at 4:30am.
ColdShadowKaz@reddit
Happens to me if I go to bed before twelve at night.
rirasama@reddit
If I go to sleep too early I sleep so little, I can't sleep before 00:00 usually because I'll just wake up at like 02:00 😭
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
Maybe the government could also implement a national 6:30am wake-up time.
ampmz@reddit
Exactly, almost like a one size fits all solution is stupid. I sleep 12-7 plenty of sleep for me, others would struggle.
Collide74@reddit
I sleep 1am - 9am ish because I work 11.30am - 8.30pm. No way could I be in bed at 9.45pm!
Great-Activity-5420@reddit
Nope. Everyone is different, needs different amounts of sleep and works different hours. Has kids who's sleep is non existent etc This sort of thing sounds like a form of government control.
Scrangle3D@reddit
What have you got running through your head?
Illustrious-Back8174@reddit
No? Not everybody exists on a 9-5 weekday schedule? Like you want your tesco worker etc to be serving you your hot cocoa and then straight to sleep? It's extraordinary to assume that everybody has the same waking hours
Front_Artichoke1616@reddit
Yeah f those shift works who have to be up at night to keep everything thing running
Phantom_Crush@reddit
I'm in bed way before that lol. I get up at 3:30am for work 🙃
AdAdministrative7804@reddit
I'm not sure what benefit there would even be from this to warrant getting a benefit from it. Octopus litterally give cheaper electricity at night.
Noone doing night shifts would cause many problems in warehousing, logistics, retail, highway maintenance
Pubs, resteraunts, cinemas, night clubs (probably not night clubs) would struggle even more on weekdays.
Every rush hour would be twice as bad as everyone is working the same hours. Each supermarket would be rammed as we all only go at the same time.
And I can't even see a benefit?
Hickeyy99@reddit
No, what the fuck? Have you been reading 1984 or watching Black Mirror by any chance?

How about 20:45?!
chef_26@reddit
It’s an interesting question and I think the idea stems from wanting everyone to be able to have genuine opportunity to get their 8 hours. For about 40% of the population though, 10:00 would interrupt their circadian rhythm and cause detriment.
If the aim is getting 8 hours, I’d like to see us adopt something that gives rights for people to select their own start times.
I’m fortunate that I can and I choose 08:00 as I’m more productive in the mornings and finishing at 16:00 is nice. One of my team is not a morning person so they start at 10:00 and work until 18:00 as that suits them better. We’re both more productive since making those changes.
I don’t know how to do this for construction or retail etc but I think there would be a way to adapt to it for companies once it was accepted.
TeHNeutral@reddit

Britain already has a weird shame culture around the time you wake up, no need to add fuel. We are not an insect hive and ‘work’ was invented only very recently in the grand scheme of things. This structure doesn’t fit many of us well.
NYX_T_RYX@reddit
Despite the fact that energy is cheaper at night because less people are using it?
There is no way EDF will sell electric cheaper in the day just cus you go to bed on time 🤦♂️
What will make it cheaper? Is if we all complain to our MP about spot pricing - the electric price is fixed to the price of gas produced electric, even if renewables etc are cheaper.
A few times last year renewables were so plentiful that producers were paying to get rid of it. Did we get paid? Fuck no!
The system is rigged against us; that's why the UK is still overpaying after Ukraine was invaded, and other countries are stabilising again 🙃🙃
PurpleSpark8@reddit

_kar00n@reddit
The national bedtime story IS 1984
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It doesn't. There's nothing in 1984 about people going to bed. There's that bit where they make you do exercise in the morning and Winston gets told off because he's under 45 and can't touch his toes. This is pretty much the polar opposite of that.
jjgill27@reddit
No, because you’re putting in a layer of implied control and rules where none are needed. Why would you want to mess with peoples autonomy?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
To improve their health.
jjgill27@reddit
Where’s the evidence that a 9:45 bedtime has health benefits?
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
It's common sense. I stayed up for 4 days once and got taken to a psychiatric institution. On the other hand, I went to bed at 9:45pm last night and woke up feeling well-rested.
Of course, take anecdotal evidence with a train of salt, but data does seem to suggest that people who sleep more are more well-rested.
jjgill27@reddit
Thanks, I’ll bear that in mind.
Isn’t it past your bedtime, though?
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
As of now, the national bedtime is only proposed policy. I'm not violating any curfew by staying up this late.
lakevna@reddit
So next you'll propose the morning exercise directly out of the book? It's for their health after all.
Interrogatingthecat@reddit
People can already go to bed earlier if they want to.
Instead you're creating a weird ass system where you punish night shift workers, insomniacs, and others
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
1984 was of course a long time ago, but people did seem to be much happier in the past. Maybe we should copy some of the stuff they were doing.
FinnemoreFan@reddit

BlvckNovia@reddit

SolairesGhost@reddit
Imagine if I didn't finish work till 10pm (I don't) and therefore couldn't get these bonuses. Would be a bummer.
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
No and it would ignore huge segments of the economy. Farming goes very late into the night if the weather is dry. Lot of manufacturing places have a third shift. Hospitals, ambulance, fire service. Hospitality industry would be decimated. Yes, you can offer exemptions but you would need so many it would be meaningless.
Or you go back to medieval curfew over time. Anyone out after dark is assumed to be a ill-doer. They used to have to carry a light and be ready for challenge by the waits. Social conformity is a big thing and people who buck it are judged harshly.
cnbcwatcher@reddit
Exactly! Also what about entertainment venues - cinemas, theatres, concert venues etc - and nightclubs? It would be impossible
raccoonsaff@reddit
Um, no? Like sure, have a bedtime story and such, have an ideal bedtime or something if you like, but you can't give people benefits!? Why are people more deserving because they sleep at a certain time!? Everyone functions better at different times, and some people work nights etc?
cnbcwatcher@reddit
No way! How would this work for university students who may be at societies/sports/getting ready to head out for the night?

CiderDrinker2@reddit
Most days, by that time, I'm just shaking off the lethargy and finally getting started on my four most productive hours of work. This is very discriminatory against night-owls.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
What if there was an option for night workers/day sleepers?
audigex@reddit
If there was a choice of signing up for either the national bedtime or national autosnooze, sure
Euffy@reddit
No, you need an option for night owls who are day workers anyway.
We already have it hard enough. Charging me for the inconvenience is just evil.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It won't cost you anything. You can live your life however you please.
Euffy@reddit
That's not true though is it? If the majority accept it that affects the economy and pricing. Those who don't accept it are left worse off in comparison. It's essentially a tax on night owls, except the money we pay doesn't go towards anything useful.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It ensures a lot of people get a good night's sleep, which has all kinds of benefits.
turtledude100@reddit
9:45 is too early this is not a good night sleep people have diff sleep times
Aletheia-Nyx@reddit
I mean, unless your strict bedtime comes with a complementary handful of sleeping pills or a person at your door with anaesthesia, it's not going to get people any more sleep than they could do on their own. Especially since you said people could ignore it anyway, but as things stand now, people go to sleep when they're tired unless the societal expectation of when you should be asleep forces you to be awake when you'd naturally be sleeping. Instead of a regulated bedtime, I'd rather we move back away from this thought process that everyone should sleep and wake at the same time, and find ways for society to function without calling people lazy for having different circadian rhythms.
I can promise you, sending people to bed at 9:45 is not going to mean they can get to sleep any easier than if they self-imposed that bed time. And I assure you, I'm a hell of a lot more productive from 9pm to 5am than I am 9am to 5pm. Forced into a 'normal' wake/rest cycle, I'm lethargic and brain fogged until at least 4pm, but give me the same work at 9pm and I'll be done in 2 hours.
sjr0754@reddit
The rota below was my final rota for my previous employer, make this work with your idea;

What days would I qualify for discounts?
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
None. If you're being selfish and refusing to take part in this system then I don't see why you should reap its rewards.
Meanwhile, us early birds will be enjoying snacking on our government-granted worms.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Every night. The rewards would offset the loss of earnings from not turning up for work, if that's what you're worried about.
buzzylurkerbee@reddit
Would these rewards be enough to live on? Why have a job at all? Just fill your days, living your best life and go to bed early.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Now you're catching on.
CiderDrinker2@reddit
You'd need to make all sorts of options for all sorts of schedules. If you adjust the system so that it is granular enough not to be an unfair imposition, it ceases to be a 'system'. But I just don't see any need to regulate this. It would be like meal times in France (heaven help you if you are hungry in France between 1.30pm and 6pm).
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Ok well forget the night workers then. I used to work nights so probably wouldn't have supported it either.
StickyThoPhi@reddit

elementmg@reddit
Sure, and then people who work nights get free room and board. They also get a million dollars added to their bank accounts at the end of each year.
Sound good?
rainbow-glass@reddit
I think I would be up for it if there weren't the perks of money off bills etc. Some days I might work a 12 hour shift 7-7 and then get home around 8:30, then have all my home stuff to deal with. Other days I might be studying in the library until 10pm. People who work nights would be excluded so it would be a case of 'if you are middle class enough to work a 9-5 and live within a quick commute to work, or you don't work at all, you get perks.
I would support a public health sleep hygiene initiative though, some other way.
alecmuffett@reddit
It would also be an opportunity to fix British Summer Time issues:
https://alecmuffett.com/article/8521
Quote:
Several years ago while thinking of something fun to do about this whole issue, I created the idea of British Economic Time:
The concept of BET is very simple: pick a point somewhere (eg: Greenwich) with a fixed latitude and longitude, then define 8:00am to be sunrise at that location for any given day, and “midnight” / zero-hour to be 8 hours before that.
This means of course that certain days will have more than 24 hours, and others will have less than 24 hours, but we have the Internet now so all that will fall out in the wash.
Also: anyone above the Arctic Circle will have to sort themselves out, but that’s no more presumptuous than saying Scotland can/should have its own timezone.
The benefits are huger than DDST – consistent light levels around 8am, safe children walking to school, and a near-theoretical-limit maximum number of retail hours for buying to take place in the hope that that somehow will stimulate the economy.
We can also implement a standard British National Breakfast and a British National Bedtime – sponsored by Transco – to minimise impact upon the National Grid.
I have been pursuing this idea for several years and have implemented it in Python to prototype, and at some point will make it into an app.

And this national bedtime and the benefits given from it would be enforced how?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It wouldn't be. It's not a law. Nobody is enforcing it
Rustynail9117@reddit
Somebody needs to check and make sure the people actually go to sleep at that time. So is the government going to put cameras in everyone's bedroom?
Furthermore, what counts as going to bed? Falling asleep? Lying down somewhere? Can you play or watch YouTube on your phone and it can count?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
You have to lie down and go to sleep. The government doesn't have to be involved. We could privatise it if you prefer.
Rustynail9117@reddit
Okay but that still doesn't solve the question of how can you tell if somebody is lying??

Interrogatingthecat@reddit
So ergo, it is in some way monitored and the claims are enforced.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
What claims?
Famous-Ability-4431@reddit
This for therapy unironically
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
You're not going to get much benefit from national therapy time if it starts alongside national bedtime, you'd be asleep.
pikantnasuka@reddit
What about shift workers?
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
Everyone could just move their shifts to before the national bedtime.
Low_Resolve9379@reddit
Very weird and infantilising concept. Sounds like you think the government should parent adults. Even though you say it would be entirely voluntary, just the fact Britain would have a "national bedtime" would make me unable to call myself British with any feeling of dignity or self-respect.
TheJelqingGooner@reddit
Hater.
Guilty_Resolution_13@reddit
Sure but make it 1am. How do you like it now?
Also doesn’t UK have this for kids? My (european) country has, for decades, a bedtime song at 9pm on tv for kids. No money sadly, that’s the tooth fairy
IhaveaDoberman@reddit
So basically fuck anyone who doesn't do typical office hours.
MeghanSOS@reddit

I’m sorry - diplomatic immunity?????
Personal-Tadpole4400@reddit
Reddit.
daveirl@reddit
I’m only finishing dinner around 945
Ok-Suggestion-8222@reddit
After a few chateaux nerf the papas I wouldn't be abiding to it lol
presidentphonystark@reddit
2 hours after the tea siren would be favourite
External-Praline-451@reddit
Us night-owls would rise up and rebel at 9.45pm! But I like the sound of bedtime stories, bonus if it's David Attenborough.
Internet-Dick-Joke@reddit
The good news is all the cops will have to stay in bed, plus the military and Buckingham Palace guards. We could take over the country in a single night.
NepsHasSillyOpinions@reddit
I dunno but this whole reddit thread has sent me so good job.
justbehive@reddit
Sounds lovely! Great idea! I suspect crime would also begin to fall, and people may become dare I say a bit less stressed & happier, healthier, and more content?
thermalcat@reddit
There is a book at bedtime on radio 4. 2245-2300 every weeknight.
FatherBuzzCagney@reddit
I expected some humourless twats to respond to this brilliant post, but fuck me you have excelled yourselves. Well done.
Acceptable-Music-205@reddit
Oh I do love Clubcard points go on then
Ms_tempy@reddit
I’m absolutely rubbish at going to bed so yeah I’d sign up. It might be the positive reinforcement I need to get a good sleep.
VastCare536@reddit
Fuck that shit I'm barely holding in with my current diurnal sleeping pattern
Randy_The_Guppy@reddit
It's all fine and well having diplomatic immunity until its revoked by a LA detective who is getting too old for this shit.
Misselphabathropp@reddit
We already have that. It’s called Newsnight. I’m in support of bringing it forward an hour.
Internal_Fox4367@reddit
That’s gotta be peak nanny state behaviour. Grown adults don’t need the government telling them when to go to bed.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
The government would not have to be involved. I don't know why people keep jumping to that.
Internal_Fox4367@reddit
Then how would‘ diplomatic immunity’ be given to participants?
Maicka42@reddit
The perks would be tenpting, but i need to be flexible. So its a no from me.
Maicka42@reddit
Also, the bed time story thing sounds dark af. I dont need subliminal propaganda injected into my tired subconscious. It would be a speedrun to becoming american.
JinxThePetRock@reddit
For what purpose though? What good does it do to send people to bed at any given time? Where's the benefit?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
A good night's sleep has numerous benefits.
JinxThePetRock@reddit
But that isn't dependent on what time it happens. I meant more what's the benefit to society for this to be endorsed?
Wondering_Electron@reddit
CBeebies Bedtime Stories is a thing.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
That's cheating, kids already have a bedtime.

Someonevibing1@reddit
This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read
boodledot5@reddit
I would turn myself into a nuclear bomb and destroy Westminster if this happened
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
What if the government had nothing to do with it it was just something people decided to do?
boodledot5@reddit
I'd still blame it on the government anyway
BroodLord1962@reddit
Who the hell wants to be in bed by 9:45? The human body only needs around 7 hours sleep, and I don't want to be up at 5:00am
goldenbrown27@reddit
Shit I remember being a recruit in the army lights out at ten, at first it was "that's too early" couple of weeks later you were looking forward to getting to bed by ten
Vampirero@reddit
Eh.....?
Heavy-Employment7358@reddit
This is a joke post right? Sounds pretty twisted and dystopian. Get up early for discounts and for a subjectively better life. Load of bollocks!
mrattapuss@reddit
Is this like a disguised fetish??
cragglerock93@reddit
Nah, GTF.
Unlucky-Leadership22@reddit

Azzyre@reddit
Nice try Cooper, nice try
No-Medicine1230@reddit
Yes. I’m up for it. Is it just weekdays or are we talking weekends too? I like to do a little late night gaming once the wife and baby are asleep on a Friday and Saturday- I’m talking 11pm latest these days. Mon - Fri though I’m in. In fact 9.45 is making me anxious could we do 9?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
It's every night. Rewards for participating X number of nights in a row, but it's up to you each night. Would it make you feel more patriotic?
No-Medicine1230@reddit
Patriotic? I couldn’t care less about being patriotic 😂 I’m just in it for a good nights sleep
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Would it promote a sense of camaraderie with people who wer also observing the national bedtime?
Interrogatingthecat@reddit
Mate, what is your obsession with some national sleep cult?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Just an idea I had. Wondered what people thought. It's not an obsession.
No-Medicine1230@reddit
Maybe. Even better if a few of those decent looking ones joined in a sort of national sleepover
kc_43@reddit
If there’s an element of enhancing patriotism, surely the bedtime story should be followed by a hearty rendition of the national anthem! With docked Clubcard points for those that boo it.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Perhaps. Problem is the national anthem doesn't really make you feel sleepy.
Outlawstar900@reddit
what if it were inversely proportional to your credit score?
deathschemist@reddit
no. i work in food service, i wouldn't be able to keep to that.

anabsentfriend@reddit
I'm not sure what my employer would have to say about me heading off to bed mid-shift. I'd be all for it, though.
kiki184@reddit
I honestly never heard anything more insane. I would go to war against this idea, if it was ever serious.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Who would you be fighting?
kiki184@reddit
Whoever wanted to force something horrible like thay on the society I live in.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Nobody would want to force it on anyone. It would be something you could sign up to if you wanted, like Netflix or whatever.
kiki184@reddit
Ok. So if you do this, you get money off bills. Who pays for that? If it is the rest of society, then the simple existence of this program would disadvantage everyone who does not want to be part of it. So it would be forced on everyone else.
I am not sure what diplomatic immunity means in this context.
Clubcards should just be banned as a practice, it is already insane that they are legal, so I won't even discuss clubcard points.
gd4x@reddit
We already have this, it's called Economy 7
Ket_Cz@reddit
Yeah but make it 2am to make the morons who go to bed at 7 and think they are superior because of it have a meltdown
No-Meeting-7955@reddit
If it was at 3am aye
Upbeat-Metal-5087@reddit
I could be in bed by 9.45 but still won't sleep til 1am. My natural body clock won't let me sleep any earlier
Hamsternoir@reddit
Do we get a bed time story and a mug of Ovaltine?
adl8824@reddit
@Op yes I agree, however the national bedtime is 12.30am. does this change your opinion on if it's a good idea or not?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
I don't really have much of an opinion on it, myself.
thebigbioss@reddit
Careful, we don't want the americans finding out about our secrets. They already know about the Tea Alarm and Angus Steakhouse.
In case this is real and to ensure people get a good night sleep, why not set it at 11pm and have a national wake up at 7am. As this is easier to build around the 9-5 and gives people evenings to enjoy.
Nelgumford@reddit
Not even my wife and I have a common bedtime.
Used_Platform_3114@reddit
I’m quite often asleep before 9 so I’d probably miss the bedtime story, but sign me up!

Big-Chimpin@reddit
Smart meters know what make and model your appliances are based on energy usage , they already know what you do and at what times. Mobile phone companies can predict what your going to do based on previous behaviours
Elastichedgehog@reddit
I like the spirit of the idea, at least. People seriously underestimate how much damage they're doing by not getting enough sleep.
bioticspacewizard@reddit
I’d say that’s a society problem, not an individual problem.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Yes.
MiddleAgeCool@reddit
We used to have this. The BBC man with his very posh BBC voice would wish us goodnight, the national anthem would play and then the TV signal would stop.
MysteryRockClub@reddit
Would they provide tranquilizer darts for the kids?
If so, I'm in.
Monsoon_Storm@reddit
do we get to choose the public figure? I have several in mind...
redapplegreengrape@reddit
I have questions.
Do we have to be asleep by 9:45pm or simply just in bed?
What if I’m having one of those nights where I can’t sleep? Am I then punished with a slightly higher bill?
What if I get up to pee at 2:31am? Are some of my club card points deducted?
Will Santa see this and put me on the good list?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
No, no, no and yes.
redapplegreengrape@reddit
Ahh. It was the last one I was worried about the most.

afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Well that was easy.
AceBv1@reddit
not yet! you have just started a movement!!!
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)

AceBv1@reddit
bet you could petition parliment
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
That's what weirdos do. This is too important to debate in Parliament.
Danglyweed@reddit
945? That's outrageous. I have a self imposed bedtime of 10pm, not quite sure why as I can't actually get to sleep.
I read for hours, but the thought of audible etc makes me want to bang may head on rhe wall.
Maybe a bedtime stories exactly what I need.
Betrayedunicorn@reddit
9:45? You mentalist. I love big government but only if it agrees with me. I go to bed at like 00:30 but I FEEL like national bedtime is 10:30pm.
30 mins lying in bed fucking with your phone and existential dread, 8 hours sleep for a 7am start.
Jake63@reddit
Why not just go to sleep when it gets dark like normal people?
greengrayclouds@reddit
If I can choose it to be 2am, sure. I’d still probably be 3 hours past it at least 20% of the time
Snoo_85580@reddit
Will my kids go to sleep as well? If so sure!

zoltan_g@reddit
9.45? I've only just eaten dinner
shashastar@reddit
How would we tune into the national bedtime story? The wireless? Could we have later bedtime during the summer months? Quite hard to wind down when it's still light outside. I like the sound of diplomatic immunity, would you be able to roll over your points at the end of the year, in case you wanted to save up for a big crime spree? Or cash in your points for a pillow- upgrade instead?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
I like all of these ideas.
BlokeyBlokeBloke@reddit
I would be getting paid to stay up late
Dominoscraft@reddit
No, but a national wake up applause at 7:30 am would be swell
ErectioniSelectioni@reddit
I already do that, so people wanna give me free shit for it, by all means sign me up. Do I have to be asleep by 945?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Not necessarily.
ErectioniSelectioni@reddit
Well then, yeah, pass my name along to the sleep police. I want my rewards. I’ve got some shit to do in Germany so the diplomatic immunity would be really handy
Various-Gur-261@reddit
What would be the benefit to having a national bedtime?
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
A good night's sleep. Improved health and wellbeing. A sense of community and shared experience.
Rasty_lv@reddit
Heck no..
That sounds so distopian..
dX_iIi_Xb@reddit
Fucking brilliant post. Made my evening. Hell yes I'd support it if the time was 2200. 2145 is psychologically difficult for me sign up to.
afungalmirror@reddit (OP)
Between 9:45 and 10 you can be getting ready for bed, putting on your pyjamas and cleaning your teeth etc.
dX_iIi_Xb@reddit
I'm in! I'd love to tell you how I'd make the most of my diplomatic immunity through politically-motivated hijinks abroad but I'm soooo close to a permanent Reddit ban it's not funny.
monotreme_experience@reddit
Adorable idea 100% gets my support. It's the sense of collective action we got during Covid, AND more time in bed. Win win.
