Which Regional accent is the most difficult to understand even as an American?

Most of the office workers were probably code switching, it seems common to learn to do in college, which is why there's a divide between who's doing it. There also can a weird blue collar masculinity factor to it too in my experience.

As an outsider, the concept of high schools having massive parking lots specifically for students is mind-blowing. Is it really that common for 16-year-olds to drive themselves to school every day?

Although that person replied about their daughter being 15, I can corroborate the other commenter that in rural areas children that young somewhat commonly learn to drive vehicles on private property for farm chores, hunting, etc.

They also were given out to people in war zones and famine areas, refugee camps. That kind of thing. I'm guessing the people in charge decided it was too dangerous to give ration heaters to people that maybe couldn't read the directions, in addition to the use you mentioned. Plus, these people would be somewhat likely to have a pot to boil water in, and they could heat the retort pouches that way.

Why are Americans typically so nice and cordial?

From my POV I love it from strangers, people I'll never see again. But with people I need to build relationships with it's always bothered me despite being born and raised in the south.

Younger people do use it that way too, especially people really back in the sticks. It's contextual and can also be partially sincere or more of a joking/ribbing thing. It's very contextual and what ways people use it depends on their personality.

Severe weather leaves at least 23 dead, including 14 in storm-battered Kentucky

My bf and I are working on saving money to get out of this state to a better one so we can help our visibly LGBTQ friends (we're both bi and I am agender but look like a woman bc I'm lazy lol, so we look mostly cishet) get out chain of monkeys style. Because they all make very little. So that's where my money is going. I'm spending a lot of time out in the garden this spring trying to maximize my space, I'll be taking the extra produce to a local buy nothing swap. Right now the food bank doesn't accept garden produce but if that changes I'll be doing that. I've been doing the autofill letters to my representatives, I'd do something more personal but they're huge dickwads so they aren't going to listen to reason. So I don't spend too much time on that. I'm pretty far outside the city, 45min without much traffic, so I'm limited as far as organizations to join. But I went to the may 1 protest. I mostly just try to pill people on class consciousness and how social issues are a wedge to divide us, but it doesn't come up much and you can't shoehorn it in because then people REALLY won't listen.

Mutual aid, class consciousness, and worker solidarity seem like a good place to start. What's your plan? Ignore the half of the country that's been made into foaming at the mouth facists? We gotta try...there's left wing people and oppressed minorities that can't ever afford to leave that don't deserve to be left to die. Not to mention the people that seemed normal until becoming MAGA. I've seen people who were previously normal, who always had flawed beliefs but who were capable of reason, go off the deep end. I have to believe we can get them back somehow. Otherwise what does that say about the average person? I can't believe everyone is stuck like this, I just can't. Maybe someday I'll change that opinion. But my hope isn't dead just yet.

Bro STL didn't vote for this, neither did EVERYONE in those other places. It's not their fault their neighbors are fucking idiots and they can't afford to move.

We are officially at the point where things that happened every single day at nearly every airport are making international headlines. Anyone else think this is ridiculous?

The difference in frequency and magnitude of crashes with small planes vs large commercial airlines. There's a lot to be worried about with the FAA but the reporting isn't making clear what is a big incident (that delta crash in Canada) and what is actually more common (the Philly learjet crash). Small private jets and planes have way more crashes than big airliners and they didn't ever get much publicity until the wider narrative was present. I don't think it's productive to stoke fear by using any crash of anything that flies to poorly make a point that could be made just as well without that.

People don't understand how far apart that crash and their flight to the beach from atlanta is, industry wise. I'm a layperson but one with an interest in this kind of thing so it's been obvious to me that a lot of the reporting is overblown. Most of the public doesn't have the info to see these nuances, responsible journalism would explain it. But that doesn't get clicks, and journalists that don't get clicks got fired years ago.

There's some difference in the ground beef they were using IMO. It tastes different in a way I find hard to pinpoint. Add the lack of a char-grill flavor and it's just not quite right. I think you brits probably are better at them than the Germans, but I haven't been to the isles.

I've heard our versions of scones are very sweet like many of our breads, compared to the ones in the UK. This is probably because scones are in the same category as muffins and danishes to us, very sweet breakfast pastries.

I'm from north Arkansas and the rumor was that our school was designed by someone from Florida or California because everything was connected by awnings outside instead of buildings. It was a TERRIBLE idea in our area. Our climate in that part of the state is pretty much identical to the part of MO south of 44, except a bit less snow and wind. The average winter day in Arkansas is about the same as where I'm at now in east central MO but up in missouri we do seem get nastier cold snaps with severe wind chill a few times per winter, which didn't happen so much in Arkansas. So yeah tell your husband to imagine MO climate with a Cali design school, that's what I had to deal with lol. IMO the worst days weren't snow, but wind+heavy rain. Snow doesn't get you too wet if you're not out long but there was several times we were all just soaked all day. Hallways were squeaky as hell

The problem with diseases is you don't know how serious it's going to be until it's far too late. With covid if our medical system had fully collapsed we'd have been turbo fucked. It's a miracle the workers managed to hold it together with their blood sweat and tears. Even still the economic effects are ongoing and generally bad. Not to mention long covid Tldr; don't be stupid, stupid

It's impossible to know "how severe" it will get. Spanish flu happened, but also pretty much every flu season since goes by without too much ruckus. Swine flu was thought to be a disaster in the making, and then it just... wasn't. We just don't know, which is why biosecurity measures are important. But now with disease more politicized than in a very long time, I am fairly sure and very afraid we won't know how bad it's gonna be until far, far too late.

I didn't say lifestyle had no outcome. I'm saying your attitude about medications in these circumstances is ignorant. There are many people for whom lifestyle changes would not fix anything, such at myself. My body doesn't hormone right. Metformin doesn't make me lose weight, I'm still a bit heavy, I have to put work in to do it. But it's happening. Without the medication the lifestyle changes wouldn't work. I felt your first comment did not represent this reality very well. In this second comment "in addition to medication" is doing the heavy lifting on that. I'm not saying you are necessarily wrong in what you said, I think you're missing important nuance.

I have PCOS that developed by the time I was 15 and a healthy weight, insulin resistance is a hallmark of that condition. I gained weight and had strange blood sugar related symptoms as well as painful ovarian cysts before I got diagnosed at 22. I take metformin to fix something I have no control over. I know you said "mostly" but people really don't read it like that. I have seen people say things like metformin shouldn't be covered by insurance because it's a lifestyle thing. I just want people to be careful and considerate saying things like you did because it can lead to ignorant places in some cases. There are studies indicating the developing of type 2 diabetes is at least partially genetic. It can be more easily prevented than what I have in many cases, but it's not as black and white as it is talked about. I encourage you to look into it and develop your own understanding.

Depends on your caloric needs. I'd say it's got about 500 calories. Assuming all your meals are the same size 1500 calories a day is fine for much of the population. In the US 2000 is standard for an adult male but if you look into your TDEE that might be too high even if you're an adult male. All depends on height, weight, activity levels, etc. It's got a variety of calorie sources with a mix of protein, fats, carbs, and fiber. It does LOOK small, but most people now have a skewed view of portion sizes. Especially in the US but it happens in other places too
