People have these crazy expectations of plane food, but let's be honest, if it's not gone bad, you're usually just happy to eat at that point. Most of the time for me I'm already feeling unwell/headache by the time I'm served so I'm happy with anything. The one time I WASN'T happy with plane food was when I was flying to Japan this spring and they served us this omelet with salsa thing. I could tell something was off about the salsa, like it was kind of sour and bad, but I already had a brainsplitting migraine and was literally crying from the pain (none of the flight attendants wanted to help me or give me a painkiller), so I ate it anyway. Long story short, when we were already in Japan the next day, I could not. stop. shitting. Legit, I don't know what was in that eggs and salsa but I was just nonstop on the toilet for the majority of our first day. It was so bad.

View on Reddit #29005409

I'd probably eat a hungry man before that, maybe you could take one and ask to use the microwave. Otherwise I take a fair amount of food on flights so I can snack and get by without having to eat airline cafeteria food, I'd rather eat an mre which ain't saying much

At least US airlines still give meals. On European flights, you have to pay like 20 euros for "meal" that doesn't cover half of this.

I got drunk on a plane once and it was amazing. We were on a nonstop long haul flight to Tokyo and I was seated next to a very exhausted nurse on her way to a Thailand beach vacation. The woman in front of us started berating the flight attendant after the flight attendant declined to bring her a 3rd meal (she didn’t like the first two the attendant had been kind enough to bring her). Nurse and I tag teamed up on the rude woman and shamed her into putting on her sleep mask and not speaking for the rest of the flight, and the flight attendant brought us free wine for the rest of the flight It was absolutely lovely but I was very hungover for our first morning in Tokyo

I bought a liter of rum at duty free right before getting on a flight from JFK to Schiphol. About 30 minutes in I cracked it and poured a drink. Figured I'd save a little money. Then it dawned on me that I couldn't get it through customs on the other end with an open bottle. Genius that I am, I'm not going to waste money, so I figured I had 7 hours to polish off that bottle. I damn near pulled it off. Might have been two fingers left when we landed. Near as I could tell, nobody was the wiser, but boy was I fucked up. I used to drink too much. Don't even get me started on the 4 grams of shrooms I ate on the way back.

I used to fly every six months when my now-husband and I were in a long distance relationship. Back then I was always fine, perfectly comfortable, no problem at all, and the first time I flew, a few years after I moved, I was *miserable*, and that's been the case ever since. Just freaking out due to feeling confined. I was very confused about why I used to be so okay with it until I remember how hard I used to hit the airport bar before my flights. Then I was like oooooooh it was drunkenness. I see. Now I just pay for exit rows and eat Ativan.

Totally. I’m not picky, but usually it’s decent. You’re also eating a hot meal 30,000 ft above the ground hurling toward your destination. They get added taste/visual points for that. It really does break up the flight too.

I used to fly between New York and Texas a lot when I was a kid in the 90s. I remember on one of those flights I had some kind of fancy dinner, there was a chicken in a tiny dish and maybe some beans or some shit. that was the only time I've seen any kind of special meal service on any domestic flight. then came the baskets with the sandwiches in them. nowadays if you're lucky you get Biscoff but that's all.

Better than hospital or jail food. Well, depending on the hospital. The one time I went to jail I swear to god they spiked the “Gatorade” because I felt absolutely aweful after drinking it. Gave my tray away because I was getting out the next morning. Immediately went to Chick-fil-A when I left

I never enjoyed chicken broth until I had to go on an all liquid diet for a few days. For weeks later I enjoyed it as a soothing snack to open my sinuses. I think my best hospital meal was when they forgot I was diabetic and gave me some (and I use this term loosely) chicken, potatoes, fruit, and a frozen ice treat. The nurse came in and asked why my blood sugar was going up and I just shrugged :) It wasn't too high but definitely shouldn't have had it. I also had some nurses slip me a popcicle or two for my sore throat from the dehydration. I hated the misconception that diabetics can't have sugar - our bodies require it. It's just that we can't have a whole pack of oreos with a cup of chocolate milk and expect to not be close to the 300 range. Cheers and I hope the pregnancy went well!

Yes, of course (unfortunately). I’m just saying, they could do better. Being plated and served on a plane isn’t why it looks this way, which was the point made in the comment I replied to. They’re able to better plate/serve food that way in one part of the plane, so they *could* do better with meals served to the rest of the plane, they just don’t.

The Gastropod podcast (which is excellent in general) has [a great episode about how airline food came to be](https://gastropod.com/first-class-fare/) and all the science/effort it took to make it (at least as best as they could) serviceable in that situation.
View on Reddit #28962411

Shoe-Stir@reddit

Literally, I feel like they’re also limited on what they can serve in the air that just won’t taste really bad. Pasta and tomatoes have a really strong taste, and “over salting” them for in-air consumption I feel is a lot more forgiving than some other foods. While maybe yeah, there could be a wider variety, but I was pretty satisfied with the time I was served on Delta. They served a mushroom and spinach gnocchi with cheese, and it made me think about it so much I made a similar dish when I arrived at home!

That would taste great on a long flight, my tastebuds aren’t picky at all when it comes to airline food. It is what it is

I fly Spirit often, so the closest thing to a meal is that beef jerky and cheese box that they sell for $17

I actually learned recently that it’s totally fine to bring food through TSA. Not sure about international flights, but you can bet I’m trying to bring through a sandwich instead of whatever that is.
View on Reddit #28936750

You've always been allowed to bring your own food. International or domestic.

When we flew back home from Orlando, FL back in 2011, we stopped at a Waffle House for breakfast. My wife took a sausage biscuit to go and the TSA agent in training paused when he scanned my wife’s purse. His trainer told him “Dude, that’s her breakfast. Good catch, though!”.

About 7 hours ago, that was lasangna. But with all the delays and cancellations they heat it, then reheat it, then reheat it again until it looks, well, like that.

Ooh I had the "tiramisu" on my last overnight flight and I actually enjoyed it. It was still frozen a bit when I ate it and it was more like ice cream than tiramisu, so it didn't bother me that it was off the mark. Nice cocoa powder

No matter how bad it looks, if I didn’t pack snacks, as soon as I smell whatever the slop is warming up in the back, I’m getting one—or quietly lamenting my lack of foresight and social anxiety preventing me from eating in public when alone 😰
