Wife’s aunt went out of town, this is what her uncle “cooked” to feed himself

This has to be the uk.

This guy has had got this meal down, probably from when he was a young man in those bachelor years
catlullabi@reddit
Lowkey looks gas
Nbddyy@reddit
God forbid a man enjoy his meal
the-weeb-whisperer@reddit
Atleast he has the sense to feed himself. My stepdad will just stay hungry if my mom doesn’t cook, smfh. RIP his bowels tho
Jojosbees@reddit
I don’t understand the appeal of a man who would rather starve than make himself a PB&J.
the-weeb-whisperer@reddit
Is this a safe space? There’s literally no appeal. This man is “traditional” but he’s just fucking lazy. Will even go to sleep without dinner instead of eating leftovers because he expects my mom to cook everyday. Just goes to work and that’s it. Does NOTHING for himself. My mom is the only reason why I haven’t beaten him with a skillet…
Dmau27@reddit
Don't use the skillet. That's ironic.
TrustMeIAmAGeologist@reddit
There’s too many men like this in our generation (gen x). They really thought they were going to have a stay at home wife who would cook and clean for them all day, and now they’re just lazy shits who have no idea how to boil fucking water.
mttttftanony@reddit
It’s their mom’s fault!!! Mark my words my son will know how to cook his own meals.
MinivanPops@reddit
What business is it of yours? Mind your own.
MysteriousDouble1708@reddit
You must be the loser
MysteriousDouble1708@reddit
Omg and she stayed with a man like that? What a loser! I would’ve left his ass a long time ago! He wants a mother/maid, not a wife. Let him starve
DangerousTurmeric@reddit
It's incompetent, rather than lazy. Like you can't feed yourself? What? How does an adult end up like that and think it's ok. Feeding yourself, sleeping, washing yourself and keeping your environment clean and safe are all basic maintenance tasks that even a hamster can do.
AdventuresOfKrisTin@reddit
No its not genuine incompetence its weaponized incompetence. A lot of men do this because they'd rather have their wife do it for them. So when wife asks him to do something, he does it piss poorly, and then wife gets too frustrated at just how bad he managed to bungle such a simple task, so she just ends up doing it herself next time. A lot of men seem to just want to marry a woman who can become their second mom. A lot of people simply never learn how to properly take care of themselves. How to cook, clean, and do basic house chores. It's mind boggling really.
thejak32@reddit
Fuck me really? My wife leaves for a week and I love that I can turn up the music super loud, used to crack a cold one 18 months sober now so maybe an N.A., and then I clean the fuck out if the house. Then I usually destroy it cause I'm a messy cook and have to clean it all again the day before she comes home.
3 things she always comes home to: clean kitchen, any extra laundry done, and fresh sheets.
Not hard to keep a marriage good fellas, usually clean sheets for her means she wants to mess them up with me, know your lady.
MysteriousDouble1708@reddit
Damn and your mom hasn’t left his ass yet?
Duspende@reddit
Idk I've seen hamsters sleep in their own shit
Ocel0tte@reddit
They actually will eat it, to digest it some more. My hamster did this a lot, she'd just curl up and take it directly from the source 😭 I was like 10 and decided I couldn't have anything to do with her lol.
Duspende@reddit
You okay? My DM's are open.
Ketheres@reddit
It's not incompetence, just laziness. Anyone who is able enough to go to work is also able enough to cook at least the most basic shit to keep themselves from starving.
booker0151@reddit
…I consider myself a competent and adventurous cook but sometimes you just think “fuck it, what’s the cupboard saying to it?”
ekdocjeidkwjfh@reddit
Oh my ma does all the above. It someone aint there to wait on her hand and foot she will get dehydrated and not eat for a full day. She rarely gets her sorry ass out of the chair to go to the bathroom (and sometimes she doesn’t, she used fucking dogpads to sit on). Shes also a hoarder but blames it on everyone else. Outta see how many used tissues she has piled up. There are two trashcans 1ft from her. She throw’s them in the floor or down in the couch. Shes also not a very good person or parent. She did this shit 30 years before she got sick too.
Honestly if dad dies before her I’m moving far away that night aint dealing with it. (I live next door)
alapantera@reddit
Depression.
Chronocidal-Orange@reddit
There is just no excuse with the existence of the internet. You can find a breakdown of every meal and how to cook it, to the very basic details. Every person should live on their own for like at least a year just to fully learn and realize what it takes to run a household.
steamygarbage@reddit
I was visiting home and we were leaving to stay at a rental for the weekend and my mom's partner didn't pack a single thing for himself. When she asked him why and to just grab a change of clothes and underwear he yelled and said he doesn't do that so my mom caved and got the stuff he needed because women are nurturing and men are helpless etc etc
I used to pack for my husband too years ago but when I didn't have time to do it once and he hinted he had expected me to do it I shut that down real quick and haven't packed for him since.
ElizabethDangit@reddit
My husband is great with participating in the household chores except for packing. He’d get his stuff together and then just expect the kids to get all their own stuff together too. Like, this kid is 5, it’s going to be a backpack full of Barbies and no underwear. One time my son literally forgot shoes. It was bananas.
the-weeb-whisperer@reddit
Yea, my stepdad is like that. Doesn’t do his laundry, can’t fold his own clothes, can’t wash dishes properly, doesn’t cover his mouth when he coughs. He’s the reason my mom and I got Covid for the 1st time in 2024, mind you I’m immunocompromised and just had a tumor removed. I trap myself in my room most times bc I’m so afraid of getting sick. Anytime you try to correct his bad behaviors he yells and calls us disrespectful. When we both had Covid he fasted for 5 days cause mom was too sick to cook, he never checked on us, never bought food or anything. It was me mustering what little strength I had going outside to get us food (masked up of course) and my bestfriend shipping me a care package. I would take care of my mom then pass out in my bed to wake up in the middle of the night soaked in sweat. Idk where I even got the strength, I’ve never been that sick before omg. If it was left up to him I think both my mom and I would’ve died. But divorce is expensive here I guess…..sorry for the trauma dump 🥹
steamygarbage@reddit
I totally get that. Anytime you try to call them out on their behavior they lash out. I hope you and your mom are doing better now.
the-weeb-whisperer@reddit
Yup. It’s infuriating. Sigh. My mom is better but I am still recovering from my tumor removal. Hoping to be good and on my feet by summer. Thank you 🫂
GrynaiTaip@reddit
My aunt is married to a man like that, except that he doesn't even have a job. Used to be a truck driver but got fired a couple years ago, now he just hangs out at home watching TV and readind newspapers.
the-weeb-whisperer@reddit
Every possible response I have for this is violent and this is exactly why I can’t be married. 2yrs no job? Jesus take the wheel
caishaurianne@reddit
Yeah, that level of helplessness is NOT sexy.
Dmau27@reddit
As opposed to the normal amount that's sexy?
WhyLisaWhy@reddit
They're intentionally being incompetent, also known as weaponized incompetence. It's like you don't want to be asked to fold laundry so you intentionally half ass it and do a shitty job so your mom/wife never asks you to do it again.
There's not much keeping a man from learning some basic kitchen skills a literal 6 year old could do.
It's something super common that comes up in break ups and divorces lol.
HiCommaJoel@reddit
People can be incompetent without it being weaponized.
This is a photo of food a man made for himself. He is not complaining or mocking it, OP is. The only person impacted by his "weaponized incompetence" is himself.
I genuinely feel this phrase is overused. It's just easier to say men are purposefully ignorant, rather than their having different standards. As a therapist I find this phrase is unhelpful - and his wife isn't even in town in this picture, who is he weaponizing against?
AnalLeakageChips@reddit
I think the implication of the photo is the man's wife typically literally makes every meal for him
MrBootylove@reddit
Right, but the implication of weaponized incompetence is that he's only pretending to not know how to cook so his wife will do it for him. This photo just shows that he just straight up doesn't know how to cook.
AnalLeakageChips@reddit
He's a grown ass man who needs to be able to take care of himself not a helpless child
MinivanPops@reddit
the meal hits all the nutrition macros, and is perfectly fine.
MrBootylove@reddit
I completely agree, that doesn't change the fact that there's a distinction between weaponized incompetence and regular incompetence.
MrBootylove@reddit
I highly doubt that's what is happening here, though. Because if it were weaponized incompetence like you said that would mean there would be someone else with him that he's expecting to cook a real meal for them once they see him eating the canned rice and beans. The fact that they're making this food when they're completely alone shows that it's just regular incompetence.
TreesmasherFTW@reddit
Might just be depressed if he’s ignoring hunger actually though.
Jojosbees@reddit
That’s not the case. They clarified that their stepdad expects their mom to cook every day and won’t even eat leftovers.

MinivanPops@reddit
What makes you think he gives a shit about appealing to you?
This is the "female gaze".
Jojosbees@reddit
Not talking about the guy in the post, who made himself food. I’m talking about the the-weeb-whisperer’s stepdad who would rather starve than make a sandwich if his wife doesn’t feed him. That’s toddler-level incompetence. Like, maybe learn reading comprehension?
MinivanPops@reddit
That's who I'm talking about too. Someone's not sexy because they decide to skip a meal? It's nobody's business. And it's creepy and invasive to consider their sex appeal because of it. Mind your own damn business, what he does isn't theirs.
Jojosbees@reddit
It’s not just “skipping a meal.” There are women who beg their doctors to tell their husbands that they need time to rehabilitate after major surgery for X number of weeks because he won’t get it through his thick skull that she’s out of commission for a month or whatever. It’s about having a “partner” that completely refuses to do basic shit for themselves. My parents came to visit, and my mom got sick. My dad literally wouldn’t heat up food that was already in the fridge unless my mom got up to do it, and the one time he did, he left the foil on the counter instead of tossing it. My husband got so upset because it’s like we had an “adult toddler” in the house with the same level of self-care as our three year old.
MinivanPops@reddit
The thread I'm replying to uses the word "appeal". You want to talk about something else you go ahead. "The appeal of a man" were the words that were used.
Jojosbees@reddit
You left out the second half where the actual question boils down to: What is the appeal of a man who refuses to feed himself? And then you went on a tangent about how we shouldn’t judge a man that makes basic food for himself when that wasn’t what was being discussed. Everything else you’ve written since has been you refusing to admit you made a mistake in your initial reply, which is low level kind of embarrassing.
MinivanPops@reddit
The question is immoral. Skipping a meal is not our business. His appeal is not your business. Discussing his appeal is making you look gross.
Jojosbees@reddit
Do you read what you write before you hit reply?
Me: Why is your mom with your stepdad?
Person who I actually responded to: I don’t know. He expects her to cook every day and won’t even eat leftovers.
You: Why are you even asking? Do you want to fuck him? (Note: honestly, this is a weird interpretation given the above, because what I said implies that purposeful incompetence is unattractive if anything.)
A common askreddit thread asks what is a subtle way you can tell someone is stupid. One of the top answers is generally an inability to admit they are wrong. You’ve quadrupled down on a bad position and are now posting hysterical rants that have little basis in reality. Again, it’s kind of embarrassing.
MinivanPops@reddit
Nope it’s as I read it. You don’t want to fuck or marry men who don’t make themselves a meal once in a while.
Comment 1: At least he has the sense to feed himself. My stepdad will just stay hungry if my mom doesn’t cook, smfh. RIP his bowels tho
Comment 2 (you): I don’t understand the appeal of a man who would rather starve than make himself a PB&J.
Comment 3: Me - What makes you think he gives a shit about appealing to you?
Comment 4 (you): Not talking about the guy in the post, who made himself food. I’m talking about the the-weeb-whisperer’s stepdad who would rather starve than make a sandwich if his wife doesn’t feed him. That’s toddler-level incompetence.
So the guy wants to stay hungry, hurting nobody, then you question his “appeal”. That’s it. The whole thing goes no further. There is no comment where anyone’s asking why she should stay married.
A guy skips a meal and you don’t find it appealing. A guy doesn’t hurt you, but he’s not sexy because of that.
My position is: mind your own business. If he doesn’t hurt anyone, if she’s not cooking and it doesn’t hurt her, it’s not her problem either. If he gets sick, sure, then you got something. But “ew he’s gross because he didn’t make a dinner”, honestly, that’s a reason to disqualify a human being as a spouse? If my wife is gone for the night and I don’t eat, I should expect divorce papers?
MinivanPops@reddit
"Why is your mom with your stepdad?"
That part is nowhere in the thread.
I'm going to go and check this on a different computer to make sure. Because that question or anything like it appears anywhere in the thread I'm responding to.

So what? WGAF if they work a job. I own a construction company. I bust my butt outside in the blistering heat, the freezing cold and everything in between. I still go home and cook, from scratch, for my wife and kids.

the-weeb-whisperer@reddit
You’re not thinking big enough. Looks fade, especially if the insides are rotten. Rich ppl hire others to do menial work for them so why would that even been an issue????
Yandere_Matrix@reddit
That is so not true. People get attached even to toxic people. It’s an addiction which is why it takes an average of 7 times to leave an abuser. It doesn’t matter if they are a man or a woman as both sides have awful partners that they stick around with even though they would be better off leaving. You really need to get out in the world if that is your mindset because you’re being fed some stupid incel bullshit.
confusedandworried76@reddit
You're gonna just automatically assume someone who doesn't feed themselves is an abuser?
Okay
Yandere_Matrix@reddit
No I never said that. Just saying with abusive relationships it takes 7 tries before successfully leaving. So what I meant to say (I though the context was obvious so sorry about that) that probably wasn’t clear that people in relationships like this that have a partner who doesn’t take care of themselves will put up with a lot as well. Sadly a lot of these relationships the lazy person could do it themselves but they mastered the art of weaponized incompetence. Since their partner puts up with it, it becomes the norm of the relationship where eventually the other will get worn down and hopefully at that point they leave.

Im willing to try for science, if I can find it in the US. I love rice, but somehow I even mess up rice cookers =(
Railic255@reddit
I have to ask..... How?
wolfgang784@reddit
Many have asked the same - including my ex as they watched me carefully measure everything and do it just like them and somehow it still got messed up.
I just bought a teeny tiny single serving rice cooker on Monday. I read all the instructions, made sure to use the provided measuring tools like it said and not my own, triple checked my rice amounts and where the water was filled to vs what the manual says, and turned it on.
It boiled out and over the lid and there was a white film covering the lid and down the side of the cooker. The rice itself was cooked but the sides of the pot were coated in the white film and the top of the rice too and the rice tasted a bit too soggy mostly but some was crunchy as well. It didn't taste very good.
My results in the past with a full-size cooker were similar.
caishaurianne@reddit
Is it possible you’ve been cursed by a witch?
wolfgang784@reddit
Its the only logical answer at this point.
If my stomach settles enough, id like to try again tomorrow with this new tiny cooker lol. Haven't given it a 2nd go yet.
Railic255@reddit
Are you rinsing your rice?
wolfgang784@reddit
I don't think I ever did except for the rice in my new tiny cooker because the instructions said so. But ima be honest - I dont have a strainer so it was really shitty half assed rinsing and was prolly more akin to just pre wetting it than rinsing.
Dont think I was told to before. Nor did I ever see my ex do so or suggest I do so and her rice was perfect.
If you think thats part of the problem, ill devise a way tomorrow to thoroughly rinse the next attempt. Maybe a bike ride to the thrift store for a strainer.
Railic255@reddit
Honestly, I'm not sure cause I can barely cook anything and somehow can't fuck up rice in a rice cooker when I can fuck everything else up so bad I was banned from cooking by my wife for like 5 years.
If it helps, when I rinse out the rice I use the container that goes in the rice cooker. I'll fill it to a little above the rice and swirl it, then drain it while using my hand to keep the rice from spilling into the sink. I'll do that 3 or 4 times. Then I'll dry off the outside of the container, put it in the rice cooker, add the water as instructed and let the rice cooker do its thing at that point.
nemophilouspixie@reddit
Railic255@reddit
Ah shit. I ended up falling asleep. Lol.
I'll post when I get home from work.
wolfgang784@reddit
Lol that wasn't me, the person you were responding to originally. I fell asleep anyway, it was after 1am for me when that last message sent.
I saved the instruction manual and its got its measurements listed, so im good unless you really want to. Ima try the better rinsing next time first.
Railic255@reddit
1 cup of rice. 1.5 cups of water.
If we make more it's 2 cups of rice, 3 cups of water.
wolfgang784@reddit
Hmm. Interesting. I believe that is the measurements we used with our old big one that my ex made rice great in.
My current tiny one says only 1 1/4 cups of water for each cup of rice though. I thought maybe I was just remembering the measurements wrong but you have confirmed I was remembering correctly.
.
Im gonna try both of the ideas ive been given the next 2 times I make rice.
First time will be rice rinsed enough to please the gods but with the water the instructions say.
2nd will also be rinsed but with ever so slightly more water.
dyslexic-pro21@reddit
Did you get good rice man I'm curious now shit 🤣
wolfgang784@reddit
I think the starch thing mighta been it. This batch came out much better. I think a taaaad less water than the directions say next time but came out pretty decent. Forgot to buy butter though.
dyslexic-pro21@reddit
Yeah I would go with the less water but not much or like you said earlier it will get brittle and dry but I'm glad to hear that it came out better
wolfgang784@reddit
Yooo the TIMING. My first attempt since Monday is cookin as we speak. Its automatic so I wasn't super payin attention to the time but it should be like half done or more.
Railic255@reddit
Hopefully at least one of those experiments works!
wolfgang784@reddit
I think the starch thing mighta been it. This batch came out much better. I think a taaaad less water than the directions say next time but came out pretty decent. Forgot to buy butter though.
Railic255@reddit
Sweet! I'm happy it worked out and you got a better result!
Do you add butter while it's cooking?
Also, cheese on rice is absolutely delicious if you haven't tried it.
wolfgang784@reddit
Never did it while cooking, no, just after. This time I did remember to add salt to the water, though! Forgot last time.
Iiiiiiii don't think ive ever heard of adding cheese. Maybe I will order a teeny bit when I get groceries next.
What style and kind? Shredded, sliced, grated? Parm, American, Swiss, etc?
Railic255@reddit
I usually go for a mild cheddar. Sliced, shredded, grated, any kind will do cause if you add it while the rice is hot it melts into it all.
American is good as well, Swiss can be good but usually you gotta add some pepper or maybe butter to it to help bring out the flavor more.
wolfgang784@reddit
Ill prolly try American then if I try it. Im not a big cheddar fan most of the time. Thanks for another rice tip, lol
Railic255@reddit
Always happy to spread good food! Especially cheap and easy meals that are still delicious.
Railic255@reddit
I'll still post the ones I use just in case you feel like trying one of em or anyone who comes along wants to. I think they're standard measurements but I'm not 100% sure.
wolfgang784@reddit

Wildse7en@reddit
I had a small 3cup rice cooker and it often boiled over as well. Got a much larger one now and no issues. Are you washing your rice beforehand to remove excess starch? That'll make a big difference.
Other than that I recommend keeping an eye on your small rice cooker and venting the lid more so its not overcooking your rice.
ihadagoodone@reddit
Wash your rice for one. Can do it in the rice cooker. Add rice, fill with water stir around a bit, and drain. Repeat until water runs clear. For me at least 4 rinses. And add a bit of salt when you cook it as well. That white film is starch, and if you rinse it off the rice it will be better. You also want to unplug the rice cooker asap when it finishes, some of them stay too hot when in the "warm" cycle after cooking and will crisp the bottom, some people like that though. And let the rice sit for a few minutes before removing from the rice cooker to allow it to release. If its clumpy when you take it out, rinse more next time.
sir_suckalot@reddit
In general don't do it in the rice cooker because it can damage the coating
Ok-Suggestion1858@reddit
Wash your rice first to get extra starch off
vertigo1083@reddit
Did you stir the rice?
Don't stir the rice. It agitates all the starch in the rice, releasing it and creating gel. It's basically how corn starch works to thicken sauces and gravy.
Let it almost completely cook, and fluff the rice, lightly lifting from the bottom and letting it fall back down into itself.
If you didn't stir the rice?
Well then I don't know how you fucked that up.
wolfgang784@reddit
Stir it while it was cookin? No, once the power switch was flicked on I didnt touch it till it beeped. Instructions didnt say to stir it so I didnt.
Its sounding like from others though that rinsing my rice better might do the trick.
blood_bones_hearts@reddit
Have you ever tried baking it? I swear it works the best for me over every other method.
CaptainLollygag@reddit
That's how I always cook short grain brown rice (which is my favorite). Cooks perfectly!
wolfgang784@reddit
Not when I had an oven, nah, but now I no longer have access to one anyway. I appreciste the idea though.
Microwave, my new rice cooker, shitty toaster oven I need to replace but it does still technically work, mini fridge, and a chest freezer are what I got to work with.
You might be thinkin I can do it in the toaster oven - but idk if the temps are accurate or what. It takes an hour at 400F to cook some chicken tenders so I dont think its workin right lol.
Should really replace it with an air fryer.
farvag1964@reddit
I'm in almost the same situation.
I finally gave up and bought a 35 buck panini press to have something hot from cheap sammich ingredients
blood_bones_hearts@reddit
Hmm yeah not sure a toaster oven would work and especially not yours lmao! Hopefully you can get the new rice cooker dialed in.
And yeah one of those air fryers that look like a toaster oven would be a good next investment for sure.

It def is but some people just don't know about it, they sell pouches and like little microwavable bowls

I buy whole boxes of microwaveable rice from Costco. It’s just convenient if one kid wants a snack.

A bag of frozen microwavable rice, some chicken nuggets, toss the chicken nuggets in store bought sweet and sour sauce. Poor man's Chinese food for fairly cheap and almost no effort.

confusedandworried76@reddit
I mean they sell bags of frozen rice you can microwave too, they aren't bad at all. It's just steamed rice and usually some frozen peas and carrots in there.
I used to make that and this fancy frozen chicken nugget kind of thing and just throw some sweet and sour sauce on the chicken, very little time and effort but whatever's in the rice makes your farts rank as fuck.
DirectionAble3201@reddit
Does it have to be in a tin? Uncle Ben’s microwave rice.

idk maybe he was proud, like i know its objectively a bad meal but its something. To extrapolate, I hate cooking and wet things on my hand, at this point in my life I have always been cooked for. I know how to, like, boil and scramble eggs but I wouldn't say I know how to cook though of course I'm trying to learn. Maybe he is too. Presumably he cooked that rice but since his wife always cooks for him (and his parents before her) he doesn't have many opportunities to learn. Maybe he just particularly lazy that day, maybe he was just being adventurous.
Or maybe he is a sexist pos who thinks its a woman's job to cook, refused to learn and is trying to make his wife feel bad about what 'he has to eat till she comes back'

My mum (Chinese) used to do this with a lot of foods that you would usually serve with pasta or bread. Bolognese? On rice. Baked beans and cheese? On rice. Beef stew? Riceee.
Honestly it's pretty good. The carbs are just a vehicle for the topping anyway.
violettheory@reddit
Bolognese on rice is like, 3/4 of the way to a Japanese doria, which is fucking amazing, so I'd believe it!
jsamuraij@reddit
I have leftover homemade bolognese, I'm fucking trying this right now
violettheory@reddit
Bolognese on rice, top with cheese, get it all melty in the oven... It's heaven. If you ever want to try a more authentic version, with a Japanese style "Italian" sauce and seasoned rice with a béchamel layer... It's more effort but damn it's worth it.
Muriel_the_Turtle@reddit
I thought it was normal to eat beef stew with rice?
SlayQween@reddit
One's that I know of are usually served with pasta (like with stroganoff) or potatoes (like beef bourguignon) but there may be types served with rice I've not had before.
Enough_Fish739@reddit
Who eats stroganoff with pasta? That is 100% a rice dish
ElizabethDangit@reddit
It’s both, it just depends on the path the dish took to get to where you are now. Russians who spent time in east Asia during wartime were more likely to make it with rice and Russians who spent that time in Europe made it with noodles and then both versions proliferated.
Enough_Fish739@reddit
Alright so apperantly americans eat it with noodles, just one more reason for me to think you are all weird.
wankthisway@reddit
"DAE America bad??"
The UK has something called "British Chinese cuisine" which is ghastly. Nordic dishes look like a minimalist's wet dream. There's Surströmming, whale penis dishes, pork blood stews, and live octopus / squid dishes.
But sure, using one carb instead of another is what makes a culture weird.
caishaurianne@reddit
What does British Chinese cuisine consist of?
wankthisway@reddit
https://www.buzzfeed.com/rossyoder/british-chinese-takeout-food-explained

It’s a actually more akin to HK cuisine since the UK has great ties with the country. And it tastes nothing like Nordic food. Further, I’d wager British Chinese food is closer to Chinese food than the abomination that is crab Rangoon
wankthisway@reddit
By pointing out that other cultures do weird shit all the time? It's the dumbest fucking trend to go "LOL AMERICANS ARE SO WEIRD" for something benign as hell, but then you lot have a fit when it's pointed out the other way.

In Brazil any beef stew is almost exclusively served with rice. Including stroganoff. Crazy to see yall eat these with pasta mostly!
confusedandworried76@reddit
American, never heard of pasta in beef stew. Eaten alone or served over rice is the way.
ElizabethDangit@reddit
Beef stew is usually meat and vegetables here, stroganoff is usually served over egg noodles, and it’s usually soup rather than stew that has rice or noodles in it. It’s a semantics and the use of the words vary a lot from culture to culture.
Internal-Computer388@reddit
Not pasta but egg noodles. We usually eat it rice or mashed potatoes, but sometimes we treat it like pot roast with egg noodles since it's basically the same thing.

Yeah I HATE beef stew (texture issue - I hate most stews and soups and just anything watery) so I don't eat it — but my grandparents always ate it with rice. I thought that was just the way you were supposed to eat it (or just the stew by itself)
The_Homestarmy@reddit
You're like the opposite of the Stew Guy
aimeerolu@reddit
My ex is Chinese and same thing….everything goes on rice. When I was making pot roast, he started cooking rice and just acted like that’s just how everyone does it. And then here I am thinking no one eats pot roast with rice. We all have our way of doing things.
Putting a starch (potatoes in the roast) on another starch (rice) just seemed so weird to me. But realistically, I probably do that all the time without realizing it.
MercuryPools@reddit
Beef stew (or really any stew) on rice is so common all over Africa and in my country, I’m surprised it’s an unfamiliar combination for a lot of people
Old-Constant4411@reddit
It's really only unfamiliar to North American white people. Rice feeds an overwhelming percentage of the known world, but white folks get most their carbs from noodles and bread. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, like a fair amount of deep south US states using rice in a lot of things.

Number1AbeLincolnFan@reddit

I don’t know many chefs, or even home cooks for that matter, that would call a box of craft Mac and cheese with random canned/boxed/frozen stuff in it a recipe. Recipes don’t typically include processed food unless you’re just going for budget recipes or family hand-me-downs, which is typically ultra-processed stuff that is quite shitty for you. Clearly I don’t think it’s shitty (tasting at least), it’s just low effort. That’s the vibe I get from this.

Sometimes in this sub I see food that only lacks presentation but otherwise is quiet fine. I mean, rice, beans, fish, beer. Could be a lot worse. Is even close to healthy.
MinivanPops@reddit
Protein
Fiber
Healthy fish
Bean sprouts: vitamin C and potassium.
The meal is fine.
sterling_mallory@reddit
There's a hierarchy of how well vegetables survive the canning process. Corn is at the top, along with peas. Bean sprouts are battling with asparagus for the bottom spot.
CoolEren@reddit
Bro this is the most common traditional Turkish food Ive ever had in Turkey for 12 years 😭
rowrowfightthepandas@reddit
Basically British Chipotle
_No-Handle_@reddit
He's Australian, many places eat baked beans 🙄

Kofee_N_Donuts@reddit
This is just british cuisine
spattzzz@reddit
Big up for bothering with the plate my man.
m0rtm0rt@reddit
Beans on rice is good but the execution leaves a little to be desired
Could do a lot worse though
Zizhou@reddit
Yeah, it could have easily been just cold beans eaten straight from the can. Guy even added sprouts and salmon to his bachelor chow to add extra flavor and nutrition.
EremiticFerret@reddit
I never considered baked beans on rice, but guess it makes sense and is healthier than most options.
Embarrassed_Cow@reddit
Pork and Beans? I guess that might just be a Midwest thing.
EremiticFerret@reddit
Pork and beans, sure.
But beans and rice is like a special combo, where they greatly complement each other nutritionally and popular in many cuisines. Normally though you think of a Mexican or Spanish rice and blsck beans, an Indian or Middle Eastern style lentil and rice and so on.
Baked beans on rice is like a British/American version of that combination I never considered!
snertwith2ls@reddit
I get beans on rice, and I get canned salmon and bean sprouts on rice. I'm just not sure about mixing the 2. Is he pregnant??
OneOfAKind2@reddit
I can cook reasonably well, always have food in the house and have all the machines, Instantpot, sous vide, air fryer, toaster oven, regular oven, microwave, etc. Sometimes I like throwing together rice and beans with a tin of salmon and a toast. It's nutritious, tastes good to me and fills me up.
charlesebastian@reddit
I love how overwhelmingly Australian this is
sprokket@reddit
at least the beer improved between photos
PlutoniumSmile@reddit
Two dogshit beers too lol

Baked beans are also enjoyed in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, the US, other European countries such as Germany and Sweden, and even Hong Kong. But sure, bad = English 🙄
ArsBrevis@reddit
Oh wow, another English food joke... how original!

Didn’t the British make Australia a colony…?
D31taF0rc3@reddit
There are a lot of people here with zero english heritage. Australia was a British colony and we're now a part of the commonwealth but that doesn't mean that Aus and England are the same thing.
pookiebaby876@reddit
Not saying it’s the same thing, but there can be a possibility that they are British and thus love their beans 🫘 and tinned fish 🐟
GamesFranco2819@reddit
Mate, I don't care what his drivers license says. That is an English plate of despair if I've ever seen one. He may have escaped the rainy island for a sandy island, but that is still an extremely British meal.
Ya-Dikobraz@reddit
That's fairly healthy, really. And balanced. But why is the rice in a colander?
lauren-js@reddit
Is he australian by any chance?
emutts@reddit
That’s a meal, yum!

Why does it look like he took a picture with the flash on in a completely dark room?
torpthursdays@reddit
I can't count the amount of times I've had meals like this. When my accommodation was slightly less stable I'd pretty much live out of tins, so I always tried to get protein veggies and beans (not baked beans just the 90c tinned beans). A bit later on I got a little furno stove so rice joined the menu. Surprisingly tasty even if it's pretty simple!!
lysfc@reddit
honestly rice in canned soup (with thicker broth so the rice doesn't soap up all the flavor) is pretty great. it's pretty good with progresso's creamy chicken noodle
Easy_Bird4975@reddit
Did he strain the rice?

Did he just randomly pick three cans from the pantry and throw them all on a plate together?

PilgrimOz@reddit
Add cheese and this is what my stepdad ate nightly (occasionally changed rice for 2min noodles. No flavourings 😳). My mum sucks at cooking (full time worker, single mother. Deaf daughter and nutty son) so I took over cooking duties. I got right into it. It’s the only thing he misses about me not living there anymore. (Loves me. Doesn’t wanna live with me;)
