Is OSU vs Michigan the Greatest sports rivalry in all American sports?

Posted by Pale-Ad9012@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 299 comments

owledge@reddit

The Iron Bowl is good, but I think it doesn’t have the same kind of deep hatred between teams that The Game has. OSU and Michigan players fight on the field every year and their fans would never consider rooting for the other team in non-conference play

Why do Americans move so often?

Posted by cavaismylife@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 2273 comments

owledge@reddit

A family owning a home for multiple generations is less common in America since it’s a younger and very large country. It’s big enough to move to another state that has completely different climate, culture, and governance, causing movement trends like the Great Migration of black people from the segregated south to northern cities in the early 20th century or the more recent movement of people from the northern “Rust Belt” into the southern/western “Sun Belt”. So because of that, the idea of moving around is ingrained in American culture. By moving domestically here you can capture some of the benefits of immigrating to a new country while avoiding a lot of the hassle.

Which city in the United States has the largest population of baseball players?

Posted by ArtisticArgument9625@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 134 comments

owledge@reddit

The LA metro area, Orange County specifically, has a lot of baseball players and produces a ton of MLB talent. Just from OC alone we have Paul Skenes, Gerrit Cole, Freddie Freeman, Nolan Arenado, Matt Chapman, Shane Bieber, Jarren Duran, Royce Lewis, Ryan McMahon, Kyle Hendricks, Tanner Bibee, and others in the majors right now. There’s also a good amount of talent coming out of the Inland Empire, such as Seth Hernandez and Billy Carlson from Corona HS and Gavin Fien from Temecula going in the top 15 of the MLB draft this year.

Is diving or faking injuries common in American sports like it is in soccer?

Posted by Jezzaq94@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 576 comments

owledge@reddit

In pro baseball, there are a good amount of “phantom injuries” (i.e. fabricated injury reports for a player) that are used on struggling pitchers so that they can bring in someone else to temporarily replace him without having to put him on waivers (i.e. expose him to potentially being claimed by another team for free before he can be sent to the minor leagues).

Youth basketball is less accessible and affordable than it used to be. In theory you only need a ball and hoop to play, but travel ball and camps are a big part of the development and recognition now, and they’re both quite expensive. There’s more guys in the NBA now who are from wealthy and/or NBA alum families.

Do top athletes in college really study?

Posted by Hyde1505@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 265 comments

owledge@reddit

Athletes in high-profile sports like football and basketball are stereotyped as poor students. They get a fair amount of academic privilege like tutoring and attendance (and maybe sometimes grading) leniency. And some schools like North Carolina have had academic scandals. But there are plenty of genuinely studious student-athletes. Take for example the Winklevoss twins or Josh Dobbs, an NFL quarterback with an aerospace engineering degree.

In which states or regions does saying "the city" only refer to one specific city?

Posted by GimmeShockTreatment@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1041 comments

owledge@reddit

In SoCal, no one really says “the city” because of how the region is laid out. There’s a lot of sprawl and a ton of big cities with enough amenities to avoid going to LA. And no one really wants to go to DTLA unless it’s for a Laker game.

Most people will probably have heard about it by the time it starts, especially those that live in the host city, but whether or not people will watch is hard to say. Tickets will presumably be going for hundreds of dollars, and that’s a tough sell one anyone who’s never been to a soccer game before.

The left has no one to blame for its lack of patriotism except itself. Nothing was “stolen” from you. You simply never saw patriotism as essential so you gave up on it because you don’t like some of the people waving the same flag that you were. You didn’t stop voting because right-wingers vote too.

How much does the rest of the country know about the history of Alta California and the Missions? We learn a lot about it here obviously but I’ve wondered if it’s more obscure to the rest of the country. There’s an assumption that the east coast is so much more historic but Junipero Serra was building an extensive network of Missions while the Revolutionary War was going on.

Out-of-towners in general underestimate how big and spread out SoCal is. You’ll see lots of transplants asking if something like San Clemente to Burbank is a reasonable daily commute. A simple look at Google Maps would tell you that’s 80 miles and 2+ hours during rush hour.
