Which American sports team has the best (or worst) fans?

As a Cowboys fans we are some of the most annoying, I must admit
greggo39@reddit
The Philadelphia Eagles fans are vile. Minnesota Wild fans are the Eagles fans of hockey.
glowinthedarkfrizbee@reddit
I think about fans that stay loyal regardless of how successful the team is. I’m going with Pittsburgh as best fans.
Do__Math__Not__Meth@reddit
It’s sad because the Pirates truly have way better fans than they deserve
vvooper@reddit
maybe someday they’ll be good again :’)
bigmansteveg@reddit
Out of all the cities to use an example of "they stay loyal regardless of how successful the team is"........you landed on PITTSBURGH?!
bunkumsmorsel@reddit
I really do love Pittsburgh sports fans. And how all the teams have the same black and yellow colors.
JoeFromStPaul@reddit
I'm a Twins fan. I like when the Blue Jay's are in town and half of the stadium is Canadians. It's a really fun time.
nilecrane@reddit
Buffalo Bills fans are really great. They’ve made it a tradition to donate to opponents charities.
Individual_Corgi_576@reddit
Went to an AFC championship game at Bills stadium in 1993. A college buddy was from the Falls and we decided to go to the game at the last minute.
I remember walking back to my seat from the bathroom and another fan was walking out. We were close so I turned my body as not to bump him. My hand was up as I turned and the guy high-fived me.
That was the general vibe of the place. Bills fans (and in my experience Western New Yorkers) are generally a good bunch.
EamusAndy@reddit
I was at the AFC Championship the year before that (as a ten year old). I remember getting super upset because it was freezing and some drunken idiot dropped a beer on me.
All of the guys around me and my Dad spent the entire rest of the game making sure i had the best time ever.
THAT is the dichotomy of the Bills Mafia. A bunch of heavy drinking good people
wampwampwampus@reddit
I have never had hometown pride for any actual teams, but I do have a fondness for the fan base of the Bills.
Feebedel324@reddit
I’m a bengals fan but honestly would cheer on the bills if they played anyone else.
GetsWeirdLooks@reddit
Also a Bengals fan. I feel that the January 2, 2023 game versus the Bills where Damar Hamlin had a heart attack bonded the Bills and Bengals together. We went through something together that night and in the days that followed.
2amscrolling@reddit
Agreed, and prior to that Dalton/Boyd helped us finally get into the playoffs after 17 freaking years
Independent_Prior612@reddit
I….even as a non-fan watching, that was terrifying. The first thing I noticed was that they were taking multiple commercial breaks without anything changing onfield. Even with no idea what exactly was happening, that told me a lot.
Feebedel324@reddit
Yeah I was stressed but very glad our medical team was able to help him!! That was terrifying.

They’re nice too! I went to a Bills Dolphins game a few years ago and there were Bills fans behind us. They were really polite and friendly.

I have to admit the bills mafia really flipped from being a druken group of jackass wannabe's to a pretty reputable group of fans.

When one of the Bills players didn't get nominated for the Hall of Fame, the nonprofit I work for was one of the charities that benefited from fans donating in his honor in response. What's crazy is the number of people that still donate to us several years later. Like, I get the one-time donation. But to keep doing it shows some real dedication (that I very much appreciate)!
TheTooz72@reddit
Dodger fans. They can dish it out, but they can't take it. I stopped going to the games because of how much I get hassled as a Giants fan. Even in the parking lot before the games.
ElectricalCoffee9981@reddit
Raider fans are notorious for being thugs. I witnessed first hand at the Los Angeles Coliseum Raiders fans pummel two Broncos fans waiting in line at concession stand. No banter going back and forth just because. It was insane. I recently experienced some asinine fans at an Indiana Pacers playoff game. Fans were just being assholes to be assholes. They were winning the game and basically yelled obscenities at me about Giannis A for the Bucks. I was taken aback. 20 yrs ago I probably would have been arrested for assault. But then I'd be just as bad.
TheTooz72@reddit
Went to the Raiders-Chargers game in San Diego and came across a Charger fan with the a shirt that read, "All Raider fans go back to Mexico".
xx-rapunzel-xx@reddit
i think this is the first NBA mention i’ve seen in this post.
ian2121@reddit
Is the Raiders thing still a thing? Seems like their fans have kind of changed since the move
Mata187@reddit
Growing up in LA during the Raider timeframe, my father use to take me to Raider games (5-8 years old) hoping that I would become a Raider fan. However, he said we never stayed after the 3rd quarter because fans got really crazy and violent.
When I was 10, the Raiders left LA, so I thought “ok, I’ll be a Rams fan.” Then they left the same year.
I became a Chargers fan that same year when they reached the Super Bowl. It infuriated my dad because “the Chargers are the ultimate rival of de Raiders!”
Fast forward 13 years later, I’m stationed in Germany and coming home for Christmas leave. I somehow manage to get four tickets to the Chargers vs Cardinals game in San Diego. My intention was to take my cousins from Mexico. When I told my dad about the tickets, he responded “hell yeah! It’s been so freaking long that I’ve been to an NFL game!” I came back with “who said I was taking you? You’re a Raider fan!” Instantly my dad countered “no, I’m a fan of the team that makes me the most money!”
Fast forward to 2020. I get a phone call from the Chargers sales department. They are offering me a chance to be a season ticket holder in Los Angeles. Not sure what to do, I bring my dad on the line for his advice and when he heard of the seats and price, he instantly said “hell yeah! Sign us up!”
So, my dad went from being a Raider fan growing up to a Charger fan today.
Highway49@reddit
I remember very well the Raiders came across the Bay to play the 49ers in 2006! I was sitting in the upper deck in the east end zone, watching the 49ers lose like they always did back then, when two men a few rows up and to my right started fighting. A Raiders fan and a Niners fan just started wailing on each other, and the security guards rushed over to break up the fight, but they couldn't pull the two guys apart. Eventually the police had to come through the tunnel and run up the stairs to break up the fight, and they had to wrestle each guy away from each other. After they pinned them on the ground and started walking them down the steps, the guy in the Raiders jersey started yelling, "It's ok -- he's my cousin! He's my cousin, it's ok!"
Raiders fans are crazy -- I've never laughed so hard in my life!
ColossusOfChoads@reddit
My cousin was at an Oakland Raiders game. On the other side of the Colisuem he saw that there was a ruckus, so he looked through his binoculars. Some guy in a 9ers jersey was getting absolutely ratpacked by 5 or 6 others, while people in the upper deck were dumping beer and food on the scene from up high. Security was struggling to get to the poor bastard.
-Hannibal-Barca-@reddit
When I was in college the student life department or whatever set up a ski trip to Colorado and me and some friends signed up. We were going right through KC so we were like oh let’s go check out a chiefs game, they were playing the raiders.
So we all pile out of the big van at the stadium, groggy from the drive, wearing pajamas and hoodies and stuff, not 1 piece of chiefs gear. Walking through the parking lot a short Latino dude like 40yr/o decked in raiders gear shoulder checks the kid in front of me as we walked by, like hard enough to make him stumble, clearly intentional. We turn to him confused and he raises his arms out to the side like “what’s up?” Of course we just kept walking, perplexed at this.
So yeah my only interaction with raiders fans ever is an adult man trying to fight a 150lb 19 year old kid wearing pajamas with no team colors on. 3 minutes after exiting our vehicle. Weirdest shit I’ve ever seen.
ElectricalCoffee9981@reddit
Not at all hard to believe. I was at a sports bar in California watching the Raiders against my Packers. We had a group of Packer fans who frequented this bar regularly. But we never outnumbered any of the California teams at the time. 49'ers, Raiders, Rams & Chargers. One of my buddies starts jawing with a Raiders fan at the table next to ours. He gets suckered punched and it seems like he was laid out horizontally before crashing down on the table. Immediately gets jumped on by mass Raider fans. I get a few licks in as I'm trying to save my buddy. At this point it's chaos punches thrown everywhere. I'm able to pull him out of the melee and they're still fighting each other. We hurry out to my truck and get out of the parking lot as fast as we can. As we're exiting several police cars were driving in. Not sure what happened next but definitely got lucky and only suffered a few lumps on my head 😳😊
-Hannibal-Barca-@reddit
That’s an insane story lmao
It’s like they missed the memo that we don’t actually hate the fans of the other team. Like guys, this is for fun we’re mostly pretending to hate each other 😂

Went to a game in Oakland and it was me vs. 40,000 gang bangers. Very intimidating as a visiting fan.

HughLouisDewey@reddit
It’s of course oversimplified, but there’s a noticeable history of Alabama fans shooting at one another after Alabama losses.
The most famous case is this woman who shot and killed another woman who wasn’t sufficiently upset about Alabama’s shock loss to Auburn in 2013.
-Hannibal-Barca-@reddit
Oh wow. Yeah that’s pretty unreasonable behavior, to say the very least.
With such a strong football culture, a lot of poverty, and lack of opportunity in much of the state, a lot of people get their personal identity really wrapped up in football. Not much else around to be proud of. In these cases, I’d guess the loss is an emotional catalyst causing some underlying tensions to escalate, especially considering it’s between people that know each other well. Unfortunate in any case.
That said, I grew up in Alabama and worked as a bouncer in Tuscaloosa college bars for about 3 years, and I never saw anything out of the ordinary with fan behavior. I don’t think I ever saw a fight between Alabama fans and opposing fans actually. Aside from a bit of the classic Alabama-fan arrogance, everyone behaved pretty much like any other sporting event.
Certain NFL fanbases are far more likely to fight you than Alabama fans. Raiders and Eagles fans particularly.
DannyBones00@reddit
My least favorite people are people who have never set foot in the state of Alabama, pretended to be Alabama fans for the last 20 years, and now have changed their allegiance to Ohio State.

Disagree. They all suck.
hexadecimaldump@reddit
How are we defining best and worst? Because yeah, Cowboys fans are usually most annoying (except the random years Washington is half way decent).
For baseball, I’d have to say Red Sox and Yankees fans are up there with most annoying.
If we are talking violent fans? For football I’d say the Raiders. But Commies fans will throw crap at you then run away.
Not sure about baseball though, never really saw any baseball fans getting violent.
ParoxysmAttack@reddit
Philadelphia Eagles and Flyers fans are unbearable. I'm a Flyers fan and I can't stand going to games. Baltimore Ravens fans are pretty bad too.
hexadecimaldump@reddit
I’ve never been to a Flyers game, but Eagles and Phillies games, we heckle, but rarely anything past that. The Ravens games I’ve been to the fans have been alright, except when they play Pittsburgh.
In Pittsburgh I was expecting the same, thinking it would be fine going in eagles gear, but out of no where 2-3 guys tried to corner me and started shoving me trying to pick a fight. Luckily they got distracted by some other commotion so I was able to get away, but other than that incident they were mostly fine.
MarekRules@reddit
You're high if you think Pittsburgh fans are alright. They fly under the radar I feel like but man I hate going out to Central PA and dealing with the mix of Steelers/Ravens fans out there.
mountainriver56@reddit
What do you mean. Flyers fans are what make going to flyers games so fun.
spaceraptorbutt@reddit
I will say, one of my favorite things about being from Pittsburgh is that you can find Steelers fans anywhere and they’re always (in my experience) nice. I’ve traveled a fair bit and I don’t think I’ve gone to a country where I haven’t encountered at least one Steelers jersey. I always stop people to talk to them when I see one abroad. Sometimes it’s a yinzer, sometimes it’s a local who just loves the Steelers. It feels good to have this little cross-cultural community all across the globe.
outsideskyy@reddit

CSmith489@reddit
Philadelphia for the worst fans. Any sport.
hexadecimaldump@reddit
People who say this have never been to Philly, at least in the past 20-30 years. I took a Mets fan to a Phillies game, and he was scared shitless to wear his Mets shirt. I told him it would be fine, so reluctantly he did.
Yes, he got heckled, but in the end made 3 new friends who invited us to drink with them after the game.
Similar thing happened at an eagles game, I brought a Titans fan to. He had a blast talking shit to our fans, and having shit talked to him. Again we all ended up drinking together after the game.
Yes, we talk a lot of shit. We heckle, we get rowdy, we climb greased light poles, but the only people that get fucked up are ones who start the fights. I’ve seen more Philly fans fighting other Philly fans than I have of any opposing team. In fact, one Philly fan was getting a little too verbally abusive to a Commies fan when we were tailgating, and 4-5 other Eagles fans defended the Commies fan.
Fans in other cities are much worse than the vast majority of Philly fans. I’ve had beers cans thrown at me in DC, pushed around in Pittsburgh, and sucker punched at MetLife in New Jersey. Didn’t say a word to any of them.
I have a feeling Philly fans from the early 90s and before were much worse, but Philly fans nowadays are some of the best behaved fans I’ve seen.
hungtopbost@reddit
(This will date me a bit but) I was only at a Phillies game once, in early 2000s. Mike Lieberthal was, in my baseball mind at the time, pretty well-established as a long-standing Phillies catcher who was pretty decent. He was roundly booed at his first at-bat of the game and I just thought “Man, if that’s how somebody like HIM gets treated…”
For context, I’m a Bostonian Red Sox fan, and almost always we would go to the proverbial mat for almost any long-term Red Sox player unless they were performing really really badly or had done something off-field that was reprehensible. We are passionate and can get angry but (I feel) not so mean that we would boo the hell out of one of our own guys at home if he was just having a bad week or something.
But then again, fuck Bobby Valentine so maybe I’m wrong.

AT SANTA!!!! They threw batteries at Santa!
nbyone@reddit
Nah. They threw snowballs at Santa. They threw batteries at Aaron Rodgers, JD Drew, Dick Allen, etc.
HerrLouski@reddit
Yes, let’s get these stories cleared up.
The snowballs at Santa happened in 1968- nearly 57 years ago and it’s still brought up multiple times a year during Eagles games in December. The team was awful and the Santa was a drunk 20-year old from the crowd because the one they hired couldn’t get into town.
The battery incidents with Dick Allen also occurred in the 60s. There’s no excuse for these but also 50+ years ago.
JD Drew was more recent and he had batteries thrown at him by 2 people who were immediately kicked out. It was basically because he refused to play for the Phillies after being drafted. He earned the boos and profanities but not the batteries.
Aaron Rodger’s is unconfirmed (except by him) and the dude’s a loon so I don’t trust anything he says.
Somehow these incidents are always brought up as the reasons Philly fans suck. I think we’re severely misunderstood.

People try to climb poles literally everywhere fans celebrate, it's not specifically a Philly thing in the slightest. There are many more stories of people unfortunately falling from them and getting injured/killed. It happened in my college town when the Cubs won the World Series. It happened last year to a Dodger's fan in LA. It happened this year in Gainesville when Florida won the NCAA tournament. I'm sure you could look at videos of victory celebrations for just about every major sports championship in the US and find someone climbing or trying to climb a light pole somewhere.

MuppetusMaximusV2@reddit
Yeah it's just a chant. Been on the receiving end of it at opposing stadiums as a Philly fan as well. You just laugh at it and lean in to it. You are a visitor cheering for the visiting team. natttgeo@reddit
No we don’t lol. Philly is blue collar as hell, if we break it, we fix it.

Oddly, I was in Philly for college back in 2004/05 when they went to the Super Bowl and lost. I fully expected to see some shit but instead the entire city was just depressed(well, more depressed than it already was) for a couple weeks.

I’m a Phillies fan and my husband is a Braves fan living in PA. The banter is usually fun and expected but we’ve had a few where Philly fans were just obnoxious the entire game. Some of the worst were Sunday afternoon games where you’d think it would be more of a family friendly environment. I honestly hate going to Phillies games when they play the Braves because we can’t enjoy it. He’s been to Mets, Nationals and Yankees games in Braves gear and it’s 100x more enjoyable.

Pennsylvania is the worst state for sports fans. Steelers fans are trash.
tmclaughlin81@reddit
Yinzers whining about the Pats “cheating” was both funny and somewhat annoying as a Pats fan. They weren’t good enough for the most part but broke through twice in the 2000s anyway. They’re tied with us, but Tom Brady alone has more than either franchise - which should embarrass Robert Kraft but I’m not sure it does.
Aggressive_Dress6771@reddit
Kraft doesn’t get embarrassed. He just goes to get another “massage.”
revanisthesith@reddit
I grew up in East Tennessee not caring about the Steelers. As a Packers fan (my mom's from Wisconsin), I should be able to admire them. Old school team, lots of history & tradition, smaller city, blue collar, build through the draft, etc. On paper, they have a lot in common with the Packers.
But then I moved to the DC area and there are a lot of Steelers fans there. And they are obnoxious. I worked in restaurants/bars for 14 years there and they are easily one of my least favorite fanbases.
I had way, way fewer issues with Eagles fans than I did with Steelers fans and they're division rivals with Washington.
While I've really enjoyed visiting Philly (and even wore a Green Bay hoodie there with no issues), I think they keep the worst of their fans in Philly. Whereas Pittsburgh (and Boston) vomit them all over the country.

When the Eagles won their first Super Bowl, I was in high school. The bandwagoning and showboating was awful; it was like every single one of the worst people I knew became Eagles fans over night. I have hated the team ever since.

WardenOfCraftBeer@reddit
You know, I'll actually give that to you. It's pretty cool the first few times, but there have been a few games where it's gotten a bit annoying
AZJHawk@reddit
Yeah - that’s what is so annoying. I grew up in KC and most people kind of casually rooted for the Chiefs. When I went back at Christmas, it’s all anybody can talk about. The same thing happened with the Royals about 10 years ago when they were briefly good.
Malcolm_Y@reddit
Sorry to contradict you, but KC has been crazy about the Chiefs for decades at this point. All the fountains have been dyed red since the early 2000's on game days, all the downtown buildings full of red lights, etc. agree about the Royals and waiting for the Chiefs bandwagon to end though.
rtd131@reddit
There's not really anything else happening in Kansas City so I can't blame them too much.
Malcolm_Y@reddit

Panther25423@reddit
KC has never been casual about sports teams. They’re always dedicated even in the bad years.
tmclaughlin81@reddit
I’ve never been to KC, but as an outsider it seems they’ve been diehard for the Chiefs sure even before they were good, but much less so for the Royals.
Panther25423@reddit
It’s a different environment. The Royals is just more of a fun and chill atmosphere. Go to games, be with family and friends, have fun. You do t have be invested in the games. And not worry about winning or losing. We all love the Royals. I might go to 2-3 games during the summers after work or on a Saturday night.
tmclaughlin81@reddit
That must be it. It doesn’t translate as much to broadcasts and obviously NFL games are more of an event. Without trying to sound condescending I’m glad KC has a baseball team with the NBA and NHL bypassing the area. Same for places like Cincinnati.
StL was done dirty by the NFL but LA was too before they moved, so probably not a great team to root for in general, lol.
merkin_eater@reddit

solojones1138@reddit
Casually? When did you grow up, the 80s? Since Marty era onward the Chiefs have had a diehard fan base. Yes there are tons of band wagoners on top of it but people from here have always been real fans.
TopHeavyPigeon@reddit
To their credit, that 2015 Royals team was amazing to watch.
Living_Implement_169@reddit
No they were obnoxious even when losing. I moved here and they’re wild only NFL fans more obnoxious are Steelers fans.
us287@reddit
Yeah. The OG Chiefs fans are cool, but the bandwagons are tainting the reputation of the fanbase.
cooltiger07@reddit
when I first moved to the area, chiefs fans were considered one of the nicest fan bases. I would talk to fans of other teams at games and that was the general consensus, everyone felt welcomed at the stadium. I grew up near Oakland, and I was not allowed to go to football games there as a kid, so I definitely understood that feeling o of not being welcome. In KC, I could wear any other team colors and not be in fear of getting hurt.
that said, with the mahomes era, KC got quite a few bandwagon fans and people started getting cocky and annoying about it. It is unfortunate that so many dumbasses tainted the view of chiefs fans.
as an aside, I think steelers fans are the worst. when I lived in the east coast, everytime someone would cut meoff on the freeway, they had a damn steelers sticker on their window.
MockingbirdRambler@reddit
currently living in Missouri and I 100% agree.
blueshift9@reddit
Nah, they have always had a truly hardcore fan base. My family has always lived in the Northeast but my dad has been a Chiefs fan since the mid sixties, and had been to Arrowhead countless times. You could be a Raiders fan, and they will still feed you during tailgating. Just all around good people. Do they have a ton of bandwagon fans right now? Of course! But the ones showing up at games and in the stands aren't the bandwagon fans.

Tuckboi69@reddit
Down in North Carolina they’re very loud about claiming the Wright Brothers
BullsOnParadeFloats@reddit
And when they insist on it being THE Ohio State
lmsybiatb@reddit
Believe it or not, that is a result of Ohio University complaining because back in the 60's if you listen to old OSU games, the announcers will just refer to the team as Ohio. Ohio University is older than Ohio State and took offense that OSU was being called their name. The result is The Ohio State University.
NSNick@reddit
I'd peg it more specifically on Cris Carter, who would always accentuate the "The" on his player intros in the NFL.
UnderstandingDry4072@reddit
My friend saw an Ohio State fan key every car in the row that had a Michigan plate on his way into the stadium for the UofM game.
TopHeavyPigeon@reddit
Really doesn’t surprise me. They’re also terrible at Cedar Point. I still won’t support my state for a specific thing that I need to go to Michigan for, and any time I have to say I’m from Ohio, I always say, “don’t worry, I’m not a buckeyes fan, I’m one of the decent ones.”
Jmen4Ever@reddit
My parents are/were alumni and huge fans. I am an alum and a huge fan as are my siblings. My brother in law is an alum and a huge fan.
There was a time when I would have taken umbrage at your comment, but the more I see of some of our fans the more I totally get it.
Personally, I think it is a product of the combination of a huge alumni base, and a high level of success. This brings a craptonload of fans. And the bigger the group, the bigger the number of jerks, etc... out there. And those people tend to be loudest.
So, yes I get it, but I am still going to be a fan. I'll just do it in my own way.
seankil23@reddit
Feels like the less you follow sports, the more likely you are an Ohio State fan
spaceburrito84@reddit
There’s some weird law of physics that says the fewer Ohio State fans there are, the more obnoxious they get. I’ve gone to Ohio State bars with friends and always had a great time. But if I go into a sports bar with only one table of Ohio State fans, I’ll turn around and leave. Because I know they’ll be screaming like banshees about a two yard run while they’re up 35 on Akron in the 4th quarter.
beaudujour@reddit
Around 2007, my buddy's petite model looking wife in Texas gear had a OSU fan spit in her face just walking into the stadium before the game started at Columbus. Serious question: we’re relocating to Chicago and love watching professional sports. We’re resigned to becoming Bears fans, but which baseball team should we choose? Geographically we will be closer to Wrigley than Rate if it matters.
Independent_Prior612@reddit
If you are looking at geography, Cubs are the North Siders and Sox are the South Siders.
If you are looking at interesting history, the Cubs have the 108 year drought and “curses” while the Sox have the “Black Sox”. Which, I believe Shoeless Joe Jackson just posthumously got taken off the lifetime ban list so he can be a contender for the Hall of Fame.
The Wrigleyville neighborhood is pretty cool, I honestly am not familiar with the neighborhood around Rate as I live a couple hours south.
I don’t know that you can pick wrong. I am a Cubs fan via osmosis—hubs is a lifetime fan. There is definitely something about the Cubs fandom that sets it apart. But it would be disingenuous not to acknowledge my bias.

Dodgers fans are THE WORST in baseball. Dodgers fans are straight up inhospitable to opposing fans. Going to a game with an opposing jersey is like visiting a war zone.
The best fans in baseball are Giants fans in my opinion. There's good natured ribbing but everyone in the park is there to enjoy baseball. Went to a game a couple months ago and in one of the plays, one of the opposition team got injured pretty badly. The stadium gave him 3 standing ovations as he was being transported out. Fighting and asshole behavior isnt tolerated by either the fans OR security. It's a family atmosphere you can bring kids to.

Raiders fans. When they were in LA and playing the San Diego Chargers our “most famous” bail bondsman would run a commercial saying, “The Raiders are coming to town.”
So many of those fans were a$$holes whether they won or lost. Put my friend’s 17 year old son in the hospital - he was selling hot dogs in the stands.
skunkbot@reddit
To hell with the Raiders but in the end the devil was the owners dumbass son.
RIP SD Chargers.
Thin_Bother8217@reddit
I'm sorry for your friend's son and no excuse for that, regardless of team. But, Raiders fans have kinda chilled. I say this as a Niner fan and grew up hating the Raiders. They were super psychos and fully went into the "thug" attitude.
Over the last decade though, I've seen more issue with Niner fans than Raider fans (I live in the Bay and deal with both). The way the Niner fans have been is just horrible behavior.
non-number-name@reddit
I’m a bit dumb and I misread that as:

For a half-second there, I thought you were blaming the kid for being attacked.
MyAvarice4@reddit
Not a Niners fan! ;) Haha. There’s always the potential. I went to a high school soccer match in Tacna, Peru - a town of about 200,00 at the time - and there was some mild rioting after that, too (bricks through store fronts, etc).
I was a Chargers fan, but we both left San Diego at the same time so I call it an amicable split. Chicago Bears all the way!!!
Fenc58531@reddit
There’s also the black hole at the colosseum which was pretty infamous. There’s also the time where a fan shot someone executioner style during a preseason game.

I remember watching a GB game years ago back in the 90s. Favre was still QB. Packer player hops up into the adoring crowd post TD and is being celebrated. Meanwhile this middle aged woman reaches between his legs and gives him a full on sexual assault right there on national television. She was rubbing that man's crotch so hard and fast she probably had a friction burn welt up before she hit the parking lot.

Miami preceded the Patriots and the fire still burns. I remember their rivalry growing up in the 70s and back then it was one-sided for Miami. I think they beat the Bills for 11 years straight (something like 20 games) so lots of time for the animosity to build.

Guys you’ll meet and they’ll say “Yeah, I’m from (pick the state) but our team was always losing and I was one of those rare people that just was REALLY drawn to Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers (two media darling star QBs until the ends of their careers).”
The only difference between most Packers and Cowboys fans is that Cowboys fans have stuck with their team despite it being an utter failure the last three decades.

For college sports in California, USC fans are definitely the worst. I was in the Cal Marching Band and we’d have to hire private security whenever we visited for away games. Their fans would curse us out, throw food and drinks on us, and be so hostile that our football coach had to step in one year to mediate with their school’s leadership.
Not only that but their athletics dept would put us is the worst possible spot in the Coliseum, often play recorded music to drown out when we were playing in the stands and their fans would throw stuff onto the field while we were doing our halftime show. Extremely classless when generally PAC12 schools got along fine.

Just an all around violent and classless fanbase.
Sea2Chi@reddit
When I first moved to Chicago I wore a Seahawks Jersey to a Bears/Seahawks game.
I'd been drinking on the L as one does and when we got to the stadium I had to pee. I asked a cop if he knew where a restroom was and he looked at my jersey and said "Yeah, in Seattle."
People talked a bit of trash early on, but it wasn't that bad until the 4th quarter when it was becoming clear the Bears were going to lose what had been a close game. That's when drunks would start yelling a bit more confrontational stuff and one guy came up and asked what the fuck I was doing there.
I never felt like I was really going to get in a fight against my will, but the opportunity was very much presenting itself if I had been interested.
Then I wore a Bears jersey to a Seahawks game a few years later while visiting.
I got high fives. Lots of them.
Seattle has a lot of transplants who still support their hometown teams and while the city went nuts over the Seahawks being awesome for a few years, most of the fuck you animosity was saved for the 49ers.

Brian McCann in an interview after the series in LA was asked why he went to the mound so often. He looked at the announcers with a "really" face and pointed to center field and said 'C'mon, you guys know", shook his head and didn't say anything else.
The ring leader of the scheme, a former Yankee, said the Astros were behind the times in sign stealing. Based on the former Head Coach slip, he confirmed Yankees were doing pretty much what the Astros were doing.
MLB investigated one team openly yet quietly confirmed others were doing the same thing. If they had suspended players for it there would have been a demand for a full investigation and would have been forced to open the can of worms they brought to the party. It also would have meant the following season would have had mostly AAA players since everyone was doing it. MLB historically allows BS to fester because it has helped the ratings. PEDs, sign stealing, juiced balls, spider tack. Once the shit hits the fan they "put their foot down" and act holier than thou.
Did they cheat sure but MLB did nothing more than they had to to sweep it under the rug.

There are different flavors of bad.
In general the Northeast has fans who are the most abusive to their own players and probably their own communities. You don’t see as much booing of your own players in the Midwest as you do in Yankee Stadium. Not every city lights itself on fire for sports the way Philly does. But those fan bases will also be extremely dedicated. And their nastiness is admittedly sometimes creative. Philly has the best mascots in addition to the destructive tendencies.
In LA you get different problems: the blasé people who leave every game early to beat the traffic or a kind of hard-to-please quality where LeBron is worthless because Kobe is has been canonized into sainthood. Then there’s the thuggish violence associated with Raiders fans in particular, though that may have cooled off in recent years.
Then there’s the fanbases that just don’t show up for a team. Sometimes you look at a Florida baseball game and go, “Does anybody in the state give a shit about this team?”

Philly, no. Unquestionably the worst.
I'll throw Clemson fans in as my favorites. Been to Death Valley twice, once with the Boston College Marching Band where we were allowed to walk around the tailgate a bit to kill some time while wearing our band shirts. The band leaders told us to be careful because we were all clearly not home fans. The warning was totally unnecessary; not only were they friendly but felt like we were invited into every tailgate we walked past. Those folks are real gems; they were always the best ones when visiting Boston too.

Philly fans are the most vile and deranged, but LA fans have their own special kind of awfulness — particularly as it relates to the Lakers. They have constant delusions of grandeur about how good the team is. Two years ago they were starting fights all over the internet in response to losing the Western Finals 4-0 (that’s four consecutive lost games), saying they “almost won” 🤣 and they “got screwed”. And this year, more money was wagered on them winning the championship than any other team. It had to be their fans who drove that, because they had no defense and finished only two games ahead of 8th place in the West. Normal bettors would not have been enticed to bet on such a team winning 16 playoff games. Anyway, they lost instantly, btw, winning just 1 game. They tend to handle these things petulantly and move on to being entitled about the next season. Another thing about them that sucks is so many aren’t from anywhere near LA. That said, I find the ones that are to be the worst of them. Oh, and Dodgers fans will leave a close game to beat traffic — and possibly stab you in the parking lot on the way out.

Genuinely curious since the Raiders fan in my life (who is decidedly not obnoxious but that’s another story) stopped rooting for them when they relocated.
GooseneckRoad@reddit
Yes I think it's changing and they're losing a lot of Californian fans- maybe they'll reform their not great reputation!
kingchik@reddit
Maybe! But from being out in the non-Bay world it always seemed like sooo many ‘raiders fans’ were more people who liked their black, hardcore look as opposed to actually being from the Oakland/East Bay area. So those folks wouldn’t care if they’re Oakland or Vegas.

Most people have mentioned pro sports, or Ohio State, I'll go a little different and say University of Texas fans (full disclosure, I went to University of Houston and therefore am obligated to dislike UT). Whining about people making the "horns down" gesture, to the point they got the Big XII to penalize teams if their players did it (and the SEC to consider it unsportsmanlike in many contexts), while they're generally obnoxious bandwagon fans (I've met as many UT fans who never set foot on campus aside from going to games as I have ones who were alumni or parents or kids of alumni). Truly a toxic fan base for college sports; they wanna dish it out, but can't take it.
Meanwhile, I'll say University of Central Florida fans are lovely. I live near UCF, so I go to away games when UH plays them (thankfully we've remained in the same conference), and have had nothing but positive interactions with them (it probably helps that in football we both kinda suck, and in basketball UH is absolutely dominant; the games aren't meaningful for UCF generally). I've been invited to random tailgates (likely because I bring beer with me to pregame), and once had a guy apologize for cheering his team on when they scored ("dude, we'll be cheering and silent at opposite times, it's all good.")
Honorable mention for University of South Florida, who have their marching band play the opposing team's alma mater before the game. Super cool tradition, it makes visiting fans feel welcomed. Just a shame UCF play in a stadium that's too big for them; Raymond James feels empty with "only" 30,000 people in it.

First off, the fans were so bad at one point they just added a jail to the stadium instead of removing people who were under arrest. They've repeatedly boo'd their own team and been called out by their own players over poor treatment by philly fans. During one of their Superbowl appearances fans started rioting in philly even before the Superbowl started.

In all honesty, from my experience, they collectively got a lot more bearable after 2004. I mean of course the rivalry is still there, but it's a lot mellower now. Prior to 2004, they were all wound extremely tight and their hatred for the Yankees bordered on psychopathy (which admittedly we Yankees fans didn't help by perpetually goading them and making jokes about 1918 and Pedro Martinez and David Ortiz signing with the Yankees as free agents).
As an old Knicks fan, I am beginning to understand how those old Sox fans got that way. We are all unwell and on the verge of a stroke.
FrigginMasshole@reddit
Im from Boston but im surprised I haven’t seen Boston mentioned as much. Our fans are notorious for being racist, the Adam Jones incident comes to mind in 2014 when fans threw peanuts at him, made monkey noises and called him the N word.
tmclaughlin81@reddit
I am totally with you. I’m a Boston fan who dislikes but has a grudging respect for most NY teams (not the Jets, lol). My wife and I went to a Sox-Yankees game in April 2019, so right after the Sox last won the WS. We came wearing Sox gear and expecting to get some grief. We did not. No one had anything to say, positive or negative, and the staff were gracious when we asked questions (I think I asked where an ATM was at some point).
We lost that night, too and rode the subway back to Times Sq. for a while, nothing at all. In fact, the only person to talk shit to me was at the end of the night when we were walking back to our hotel in LIC. A guy in a Mets jersey on the sidewalk asked “who won tonight?” I said “not us” and walked on - he quipped back “yeah, 27 rings!” What the what?? lol. You shouldn’t be able to claim both IMO.
Anyway, best of luck to the Knicks. No excuses whatsoever. Losing Tatum was huge but it was already basically 3-1 Knicks so no excuse. They played harder, C’s didn’t and leaned too hard on the 3s even when they weren’t falling.

The best fans are going to belong to the teams that perenially suck. They're in it out of love and, if they had anything other than a great attitude, couldn't suffer so much losing.
Conversely, worse fans tend to belong to the teams that are in the midst of a dynasty, as they attract the bandwagon fans who are only there so they can root for a winner. Like the Chiefs currently have a lot of annoying bandwagon fans, but they do coexist with Chiefs lifers who suffered through decades of suck while waiting to be blessed with a good team.
But the absolute worst fans are those who root for a terrible team yet are continuously somehow convinced their team is the best team. It takes a rare, special sort of narcisstic culture (emphasis on the "CULT") to achieve this combo, like what the Dallas Cowboys managed to cultivate.

AchtungCloud@reddit
Philadelphia (all sports) - They’re just the worst.
St. Louis Cardinals - Self-righteous and smug, with a strong hint of racism. For football and basketball, the most similar fan bases would be Green Bay Packers and Boston Celtics, but neither are on the level of Cardinals fans.
Dallas Cowboys - Just a weird mix because it’s a national fanbase that’s sort of delusional about the team.
Miami Heat - Can’t be bothered to show up even when their team is awesome and claim it’s because Miami is just too amazing of a city to be a passionate sports fan. Gag.
Alabama Crimson Tide - Think they have a right to always be in the title game even when they aren’t good. Overly passionate weirdo fans that do things like poison trees.
Texas Longhorns - Kinda like Cowboys fans, except not as national, but think they are. Feel like they’re mere existence is important.
Ohio State Buckeyes - Want to fire their coach for losing to Michigan in the same season they win the national title.

I gotta admit, though, this year in the CFB sub, Tide fans were mostly pretty reasonable about not making it - you lose three times, and you lose the right to complain about not making the playoffs.
Crafty-Zebra3285@reddit
I almost got beat up with my eight year old daughter in tow by a gang of female Denver Bronco fans at a 49ers game. Still don’t know what I did to piss them off.
baobabtree5@reddit
Boston, because I hate the Celtics and their corny ass players
MoreMeLessU@reddit
Houston fans for all their teams
ru57y5h4ckl3f0rd@reddit
As a Dodger fan, I would have to say we have the best AND worst fan base.
Efficient_Face8433@reddit
Worst fans: Philadelphia Eagles. Best and most loyal fans: Washington Commanders NFL team. I'm biased because my family had 4 season tickets from 1966-2002. Today, a dazzling new stadium will be built in downtown D.C. At current prices, a game day would cost us more than $800.
furie1335@reddit
The worst fans, regardless of the sport, is Philadelphia.
The attacked Santa Claus.

Tbf that guy had it coming I mean he runs a sweatshop, has broken and entered into millions of houses, and watches kids in their sleep

Philly. Best & worst
Regular_Ad_6362@reddit
Detroit and Buffalo sports fans are always extremely humble.

Nebraska college football fans. At least back in the 90’s when I was in college.

Best : St. Louis Cardinals
guitar_stonks@reddit
The Florida Panthers are starting to develop a reputation for shitty fans. Same with the Golden Knights.
professornb@reddit
Love my Green Bay Packers - best fans ever (in my opinion).
MMARapFooty@reddit
Eagles fans have the most rowdy reputation in all of sports in pro sports.
OhioResidentForLife@reddit
Only one team has an entire cable show dedicated to showing the world how bad their fan base is, the Cleveland Browns. No other team even comes close, watch the show. It is an embarrassment to anyone associated with the team.
UnimpressedCT@reddit
The worst fans are those of my opponent.

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUVVVVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!! 🗣️🗣️🗣️
redtoad3212@reddit
NYC sports fans don’t know how obnoxious they are and it’s VERY annoying. No matter what team or sport. Philly is only hated on so much because of how publicized the fanbase is. MANY other cities have really shitty fanbases.
In the college football world, Alabama and Ohio State fans are by far my least favorite group to interact with when it comes to that
Repulsive-Pumpkin920@reddit
Philadelphia Eagles fans are easily the worst fans in all of pro sports in my opinion

Dodgers fans good
Yankees fans.... Well just look what they did to Mookie.

Go look at what Philadelphia Eagles fans did to Santa Claus.

Oh, I know. But I'm a Dodgers fan and have to needle the Yankees a little bit.

I live in Green Bay. I was astonished to learn the amount of “Packers bars” around the rest of the country. Most of them I’ve been to sell brats and cheese curds though so I can’t not visit and buy all their crap 😎
FallenEagle1187@reddit
Green Bay Packers. Best fans.

As a fan of Boston teams, I'm well aware of our reputation, and it's not unearned.

Ohio St fans are the rudest I’ve been around
mortalcrawad66@reddit
Very little of my life has Detroit sports ever been so good, and it's still a weird feeling.
chefnee@reddit
Titans fan here. We’ve only been to the Super Bowl once. That was back in 2000. I don’t know why I keep watching. Maybe Cam will do it for us.
Interesting-Prior397@reddit
Cowboys fans are upset and I can't blame them when Jerry Jones is basically the devil incarnate. From living in Chicago and taking the train during rush hour to get home daily, Mets and Philly fans have been the most disrespectful sadly. But that's just my own experience. I'm not much of a sports person so I'm just giving my opinion based on what I see and read.
MehBlahPooPartDeux@reddit
Pittsburgh fans. Steelers and Penguins. Yuck.
cori_2626@reddit
Personally my worst real life experiences have been with NC State fans and my best real life experiences have been Carolina Hurricanes fans (unless you get into smaller sports teams like soccer, minor league baseball, etc)
Having lived in DC for a number of years though I heard a lot of true horror stories about Commanders fans (esp back before the name change)
Cats-And-Brews@reddit
Philly fans.

Cowboys fans are the worst by virtue of Dallas being the worst.

San Francisco Giants fans are the best fans in the world in my completely and totally unbiased opinion
oriolesravensfan1090@reddit
Yankees fans are the worst followed by Cowboys fans and then Red Sox Fans.
Orioles fans are pretty chill, same with Commanders, also Blue Jays fans are not bad either
CommercialExotic2038@reddit
Seahawks fans are pretty bad, at least to 49er fans
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
They’re the same to Rams fans.
FrenchFreedom888@reddit
Gotta say OU has the worst and OSU the best (this take is 100% endorsed by my bias)
J71919@reddit
No matter where they're playing, there's always a lot of Mets fans at their games. Those fans are also incredibly creative when loudly telling the team that they suck ass so take that as you will.
No-Independence194@reddit
If you ask black baseball players, it’s Boston.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
As someone who lives in Washington and is not a Seahawks fan, they are some of the worst.

Philadelphia for the best and the worst
Nozomi_Shinkansen@reddit
My definition of a good fan is somebody who is knowledgeable about the team and the sport, someone who supports the team through good seasons and bad, and someone I'd enjoy watching a game with.
Packers in the NFC and Steelers in the AFC are the best football fans, hands down.
StL Cardinals arguably have the most knowledge and loyal fans in MLB. They can be a bit smug but are generally harmless.
unicornsprinkl3@reddit
Philadelphia maybe both, there’s usually some news and after the Eagle’s one the Super Bowl there was a riot.
AnAngryPanda1@reddit
New York, Boston, and Philly. Pretty much anywhere in the north east.
Baldrich146@reddit
There’s a reason why Jimmy Johnson thanked the people who hate the Cowboys in his Ring of Honor acceptance speech…. You all are infuriating to be around hahaha
Scribe625@reddit
Best: Pittsburgh Worst: Philly
I may be biased as a Yinzer but as my Dad used to say "Philly fans would boo the cure for cancer". They booed Santa and threw light-up wristbands on the ice during a playoff game.
nilecrane@reddit
I’ve never seen a fanbase hate their own team as much as Steelers fans which is strange to me because they’re not that bad and they’ve won some superbowls.

Worst- parts of California or Philadelphia.
Best- I’m biased because it’s my home state but Minnesota. We’ve got all the major sports, no male title since 1991, yet still cheer for them for some reason
ReturnByDeath-@reddit
I feel like it's more of a city-based thing. Like, Philly is known for very rowdy fans, SoCal vs. Northern California rivalries can get pretty nasty, and Boston has a certain "reputation".
