it's also still in it's "free because we're burning VC funding and scamming people" phase. AI is a tool people can use. but the stupidity is. business is looking at it like. great employee is more efficient, we need less employees. so no net increase in business has happened (vs if say... they thought of it as. hey neat tool, let's use it to do 2x -4x the business) and... if it becomes. we're doing same lvl of business. and AI costs the same as an employee... and oh shit our lic fees to use X agents increased again, and we're paying storage fees. and we're having to pay to train staff on our AI process. it's all a wash

start looking immediately. having more experience would obviously be better. but jobs don't matter. once you get a new job, your previous one means jack shit. you don't even have to list that employment going forward if the new job lasts sufficiently long/is more relevant. your employer is dogshit. I would say stop doing extra work, but that ship has already sailed. if they were going to promote or pay you better they would. they're not. you need to be actively looking. any employment that is similar pay/comparable work should leave with zero notice. ...or. burn up all your PTO/sick time, and then leave with zero notice.

How do you tell users that a problem isn’t technical, it’s them?

with most things in life. it's a question of who's fuck you is bigger. if your fuck you is bigger, and or your office has policy for users to self help/not bog down helpdesk with mindless issues. my advice. if this is a routine issue. create a white page/process document on how to affect the permissions issues on files via teams. provide that document to the user. then have them go through the steps. refer back to the document. refer them to their manager/loop their superior into the conversation if they repeatedly fail to absorb the material. getting upset is a suckers move. 99% of IT is dealing with users. have better processes. and ...boundaries/consequences is the only way you affect behavior. being bitchy or unprofessional doesn't win or accomplish anything. IF your management or office doesn't have policy that seeks to streamline and reduce bloat IT help desk tickets. you might be at a shitty office. If you're unable to accurately convey information, or train a user. You may need to admit that is a skillset you are lacking as a IT professional. or if that user is someone important/brings in enough money to never have to change. you need to understand that hierarchy as well. and provide service accordingly.

back up any contacts/data you want... vendors you have relationships with. internal contacts/names. if you have team members you care about, exchange contact info with them outside of work accts. To network/stay in touch (if that's something you want) if you have reviews/evals. maybe back them up/save them incase they try bullshit (claiming you were a bad employee) get your pay history/income statements (incase they're needed for any benefits/paperwork needs) once over to make sure there's no personal data on any of your devices. (work phone with family photos. contacts/info on a cell device) same for any laptops. consider what in the office you may want to take home/what if anything you need from the office. dust off your resume. (maybe write down some projects, or key accomplishments/use the time to note these things from your work) If there's anyone not on your team you give a shit about. mentor (or a professional contact worth maintaining) maybe a quick goodbye/ and exchange external contact methods with that person/those people. if they're doing layoffs, it's going to be a shitty day. be mindful of the distraction or mental impairment of stressful stuff. (had a friend get into a horrible car accident after being laid off, because he was spaced out driving)

Carrie fisher was cast as Mrs Scarlet, and apparently read for the role...was hilarious. but had entered rehab ...and the insurance on the film wouldn't allow her to be in the film and rehab at the same time so they recast to the actress who was in the movie

This could be touchy but please read the comment for more context, I just want to see if I'm remembering wrong. When I was in HS, not only was it normal to hear about 15 and 16 year olds dating guys in their 20's, but the girls that did were "cool"

Posted by MTRIFE@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 660 comments

oneWeek2024@reddit

it's called grooming, and it's been going on for ages. whether or not your friends or peers thought it was "cool" sorta depends on the type of friends you had. i was in high school in the mid 90's we had 1 friend, who came from a broken home, had some sexual abuse elements in her past. when she was 16-17 she was fairly well "developed" as a young woman... was honestly one of those cliche things as some of the other girls in our friendship circle were jealous of her breasts and attention she got from men. until... the "attention she got from men" became a creepy 25 yr old. and they were dating for a couple weeks. when about a half dozen of us... had a mini intervention and we all had a talk about how we cared about her, and this guy was using her for sex, and didn't care about her(she had all the cliches and excuses about how he said she was mature for her age, and they had so much in common, and their love was real. and all that bullshit), and his behavior was predatory and shitty. --and of course she didn't listen. but then... she got pregnant, and he disappeared, and we had to get her an abortion, and her mom found out and it was a huge deal. no one thought it was cool. and you'd hear about other young girls being prey upon by preachers, or "youth pastors" or other pedophile fucks lurking around high schools. only people who thought it were cool, were other broken idiots. who were too stupid to recognize grooming for what it was

I've put this in our Little Free Library twice now and no one takes it :(

I reread that book in my early 40's It's actually sorta wild that that Reagan era "broken home" bullshit trope novel was so wildly pushed on boys. I wouldn't blame kids these days for not being into it. that book was very much so some sort of shitty republican pysop novel for "book fairs" or something. like Henry Ford's racist "square dancing" movement or something.

I think more specifically people can connect with various elements. I never grew up in a cold as hell burnt out rust belt type town. but I had brothers, I had misc friends who I'd meet up with on the way to school or at recess the bullshit kids get into. the way kids scheme for things they know their parents prob will never overtly agree to. all those sorta tropes about christmas. the interactions between parents kids kinda see at a difference. how children idolize their parents, or a mother dotes on "the baby" of the family. even the misc working class hero elements of the father(the dogs, the furnace), the feud with the mother and father over the lamp, some of the struggles or elements of the mother... so kids can connect to things. adults can connect to things. and human things most people can relate to. vs Porky's which is basically a reductive male sex/power fantasy of sluts and smutt. I never once had male friends who gave a shit about their virginity, and plenty of my friends had sex as teenagers/and plenty were lonely horny losers. I had male and female friends, some were fucking, some weren't ... I even have memories of being a teen in the mid 1990's... I had friends have various sorts of emotional and boneheaded conversations. both deep, and deeply stupid... and those early sort of "porn" or nudie mag type memories but ...nothing about Porky's is funny or relatable to me. It's basically a few cheap fart jokes and titty "shock value" surrounding sex. it reads like someone who thinks that's how "guys" talk or some idea of what boys/men do. and maybe it's "of it's time" but I always feel like it's much more some warped sense of a writers room that convinces some shitty studio this will sell.... and it's wildly out of touch of anyone's actual lived exp.

it's not a good movie. it's just a sign of it's time. loser college writing room cliques that basically straddled the line between porn/cinema with these genre of cheap frat comedy. basically the same thing in every decade/generation in the 2000s or 2010s was that sorta judd apatow style comedy. which again... was a clique type genre comedy that sorta gained marketablity and then dozens of very samey comedies were cranked out. the actual interesting irony being... the guy who wrote/directed Porky's also did "a christmas story" the class "you'll shoot your eye out" christmas move that's on 24hr repeat xmas day.

oneWeek2024@reddit

I mean, you've never gone a day without eating for 12-16 hours? again... the only reason a "fast" is even remotely annoying is because the first 24hrs is the worst. it's when you're sugar and caffeine crashing. and your body panics. Juice fasting tends to supply you with fructose, and 1000-1500 calories fairly easily. billions of people fast every year for religious reasons, and people do it for misc health reasons all the time as well. but to each their own

What nobody tells you about your first colonoscopy

oneWeek2024@reddit

the liquid diet is no different than any fast. juice/water fasting is only miserable because it's short lived. a great "hack" for a colonoscopy is to juice fast for a week.... your metabolism will slow and there won't be anything solid in your colon anyway. Even if you just do 3 days of green juice. can easily hit 1500 calories. on simple... tasty juices (spinach pineapple is one of my favorites)

I vaguely remember ash trays on airlines. the little arm rest ash trays and i remember when i was in my early 20's flying for work. DFW had a smoking room.... i remember in nyc pre 2010 some bars would bring out the ash trays after midnight or so, they'd lock the door. let people smoke. can recall that up until about the 08 crash. can't remember any bar doing it after that...

Who still CELEBRATES their birthday?

Posted by Throw-away17465@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 874 comments

oneWeek2024@reddit

I've always disliked birthdays. My family moved around a lot on acct of my father being military. As i got older, and less "thrilled" about starting over in new towns. making friends... only to lose them, trying to somehow convince people i didn't' give a fuck about to come over and celebrate me always felt so phony. I much prefer small gatherings. person i'm dating, one good friend. Someone I actually care about and value in my life. turned 45 this year. my friend and I went out for margaritas. i love a good frozen marg. my friend knows this. we went and got day drunk on a saturday. later that night I ordered a fuck ton of Chinese food and had a cigar on my back porch. --alone I made myself a cheap boxed lemon cake the next day. was a good weekend. i guess to each their own. but i've always felt the need to celebrate yourself or have a big fuss is weird. As that impulse to attention isn't a healthy thing. The OP didn't express anything about wanting to be with friends or share with friends it was "look how awesome i am" seems real insecure and ...who you trying to convince. maybe getting older means... growing the fuck up

some non-zero number of people die every year from Tylenol overdose. (wanna say it's in the neighborhood of 2k people) generally speaking if you stick to the dosage recommendations they're safe. but prolonged use, at higher dosages does cause liver damage. and people often don't follow dosage requirements. 200mg pills vs 600mg or 1000mg can radically change how much you're taking. as the max recommended dosage for tylenol is 4000mg in 24hrs.

We grew up with expectations that were never real or attainable.

was a teenager in the mid 90s. my father had a small fishing boat. at the marina where it was kept. the bathroom building, had one of these in a long hallway... tucked away. didn't even smoke. but could feed it quarters and listen to anyone opening the door to the bathroom hallway. would buy packs of marlboro lights and reds for like $2-3 sell them for $5 on the school bus. was insane how easy it was. only problem is kids were too eager. and i was paranoid i'd get busted with a backpack full of cigarettes. even took trade in terms of ritilin tablets. cause some kids would buy those. for a few months was making decent money as a scumbag drug dealer. then one day that machine was gone. dunno if the law changed, or just that marina removed the machine.

4 million in the market at 8% would be 320k every singe year. if you did the sorta safe 4% that's what 160k? a year. you can live comfortable on 160k. now can you live a jet setting, unlimited extravagance lifestyle on 160k. no. but 160k puts you square in the top 20% of all earners in the united states. likely in the top 10% but... say you don't take out 4, but draw down that entire 8% growth each year. now you have 320k. say you're 65. and say to yourself 320k isn't enough. so every year you draw down something like 500k. so maybe somewhere in the neighborhood of deleting 200-300k from your savings every year. that's 3-5 yrs per million. so 12-20yrs before you've burnt up that 4 million, while somehow living off 500k ish every single year. how many houses or cars, or extremely expensive things are you buying in a year to burn through 500k every single year. now do that math if it's 9 million instead of 4. where 8% is 700k+ and 4% is 350k. or you could take out 500k every single year. and still leave ...maybe 200k ish to "grow" the 9mil. also... considering if you're that wealthy, you probably already have assets, like home(s) cars, massive lines of credit, or other investments/money. and wealthy friends. and a network of wealthy people to visit/mooch vacation home stays off of. etc etc

Posted by Turbulent-Abroad7841@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 3040 comments

oneWeek2024@reddit

it tends to depend on when people go to bed/get up for work. if you live in the burbs where you commute/need to get up extra early. even a 9am start time might require getting up at 7am or earlier. at which point you're not likely to be up past midnight. and therefor eat dinner earlier. my parents eat early 6pm would be pushing it for them. i lived in nyc for 20 yrs. I tend to eat dinner at 9ish or later. but i tend to be awake at midnight/work from home. conversely. when i went to italy, me and my girlfriend(us both being from NY kept hearing how europeans ate late/stayed out late. but we routinely encountered restaurants closing down, or being at "last call" type stage at 9pm.

not for nothing. get a branded small usb/lith ion tire inflator. Or like a set of jumper cables/fire extinguisher/ ice scraper type "care package" When I bought my new car back in 2021. the dealership had nothing, but the salesman had these little zipper bags, that had the jumper cables, ice scrapped, tire pressure widget in it. I thought it was a very nice gesture. and i've used every item in that kit. If i ever need a new car, and i'm anywhere remotely close to that state, i'm going back to that salesman. and was ....maaaaybe $50 of stuff.

mazda. i've been a fan of them for years. good cars. reliable, low cost of ownership, high lifespan. basically 3-4th ish place behind honda/toyota but they look better. or the aesthetics punch above their weight/cost. i bought a car a couple years back, most brands, (wanted a manual...so that restricted it somewhat) but between the civic and the mazda 3. was a clear by far and away visual upgrade on the mazda. vs the more utilitarian honda.
