What’s a cheap car that looks expensive?

Posted by Most-Initiative-3402@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 572 comments

I know cheap is subjective so let’s say new under 25k used under 17

C8 corvette base model has to be the answer. $60k for a mid engine sports car with a V8 is insane.

View on Reddit #49819874

cyprinidont@reddit

Actually very good. I have the 4-cylinder which adds to the "looking nicer than it actually is" factor but also makes it miss one of the main design flaws of this platform which is weak trunk body welds that tear apart from the rear torque of the 6-cylinders. And I don't miss the power on public streets. Has the same cooling system plastic parts failing issue that all BMWs of this age do, but that's literally every E30, E36, and E46, so not unique and it's been dealt with for less than $300. I wrench on it myself so that saves on labor. I wouldn't recommend an older European car if you're not going to do most work yourself, but it's all been easy work and this is my first car I've maintained myself. But that's why I bought it. And every time I park it in a lot full of modern crap mobiles, I get a warm feeling in my chest knowing my crap mobile still looks way cooler than theirs 27 years later, and costs 1/10th what they're paying.

Mercedes S class are built fragile. They have many systems that aren’t engineered to last and would cost too much to repair. Vacuum activated door locks for example rely on a network of hoses and pump to maintain vacuum. One leak will make the whole system malfunctioning
View on Reddit #49379745

CaptainDaveUSA@reddit

Seriously? That’s ridiculous. Why would you even try to “improve” over electric door locks? What would the benefit be?
View on Reddit #49403358

View on Reddit #49417324

dbx999@reddit

What typically happens is the vacuum lines develop a leak which triggers the electric vacuum pump to engage but it’s constantly running because the system isn’t sealing properly and maintaining the vacuum. This drains the battery and then burns out the pump too. The pump replacement isn’t so hard to fix but you have to find the leak first and that could be ANYWHERE INSIDE THE CAR
View on Reddit #49430790

Alert-Ad9197@reddit

View on Reddit #49458082

dbx999@reddit

The hard part would be to localize it behind all the door panels and routing inside the body since the pump is in the trunk but the network of tubing runs to all 4 doors
View on Reddit #49462192

hammanet@reddit

Yeah but that is specific to this model. Most Mercedes between 1970 and early 2000 have this system. It isn't that bad to fix. Finding the leak IS hell but the fix itself is cheap. I have done it on a couple of old Mercedes w201, w124, r129, w140, r170 I think they switched to an electric system from the w211 e-class onwards.

Another item that DEFIES logic is MB making their timing chains good and strong but making the guides for those chains out of plastic. Those have to be replaced regularly and take a lot of work. And if your guides fall apart, your chain might skip or jam and your valves could crash into the pistons.
View on Reddit #49440371

this is a great car to find with a blown engine for like $5k and just put an LS in it. run an aftermarket EFI system. like, if you're gonna have a project car, start out with something crazy nice. the Maserati interior will always be classy and nice, regardless how cheap it is.

View on Reddit #49374168

Autoscope_SOS@reddit

This is a great question because a lot of people want that 'luxury' vibe without breaking the bank. For new cars under $25k, I’d say check out the Kia Forte or Hyundai Elantra - both have really sleek designs and modern features that make them look way more expensive than they are. If you’re okay with used, you might want to look at a 2017-2019 Mazda6 or a Lexus ES 350 from around the same time. Mazdas have that premium feel, and Lexus is just timeless luxury that holds up well. Not a mechanic or car expert, but I’ve heard good things about CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) programs if you’re worried about reliability. Also, don’t sleep on older Audis or BMWs, but just be cautious with maintenance costs - those can sneak up on you.

Ford Focus ST. Has just a bit of that head turning factor inside and out, but still has the useability and reliability of a family hatchback. (Tbh most hot hatches fit this mold but I think the focus is the best bang for buck)

Late model Mazda 6s. Inside and out, they feel and look very premium (you'll need the 20-inch wheels). The added bonus is that unlike a lot of high-depreciation luxury cars that become cheap, Mazdas are actually very reliable and reasonably-priced to maintain. Infiniti Q50s are good shout too. They were on the market for SO long with minimal aesthetic changes, that you could go older and cheaper without anyone noticing.

If you buy one go for the non Turbo M series engine, I believe it's like 03-08? Mine is an 04. Great engine, reliable, smooth running, I get near 30Mpg.

It looked like an unfortunate mashup of a Jaguar S-Type, a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and a Lincoln Town Car. Unfortunately, it looked worse than all three. Interestingly enough, contemporary reports said that it drove and was assembled as well as the class-leading Toyota Avalon, and it did have those trick front LED lights. It might’ve sold better if it had been styled more conservatively and less aspirationally. I suppose Kia did eventually get there with the Cadenza, but by then the full-size segment was dead.

Heavily depreciated luxury cars that cost a fortune to maintain aren't cheap cars that look expensive. They're just expensive in a different way. As others have mentioned, Kias tend to look more expensive than they are. Some Volkswagens do too, with designs (and grill openings) that are similar to their Audi brethren.

View on Reddit #49374396

salmonthesuperior@reddit

Some of the new Hyundai designs look more exotic than they are since their designs are sorta out there (Elantra, Sonata and Kona especially) in comparison to similarly priced cars from other brands. Especially comparing those models to what they used to look like only a handful of years ago. Similar can be said about Kia. The Buick Envista is one of the cheaper options to buy new at the moment but it doesn't look like it from the outside (especially if you don't know much about cars.) Easy cheat code for that is the sloped back but in general GM took a page out of the Hyundai/Kia book and made it look "futuristic." Regardless of how you might feel about that design language it at least sticks out from other cars in those segments. As far as used, it's cheating but a decent amount of once-expensive luxury cars can be bought for pretty cheap since they depreciate so much. For the most part nobody seeing you on the street is gonna know it was bought for significantly cheaper than it's original price so it'll look expensive (and those who do know that it's old will probably still think you spend a shit ton on it just to keep it well serviced lol)

You could probably find an older Porsche in your price range. They scream old money and are fairly reliable once you get them all caught up on maintenance. Muscle cars with body mods also look expensive in a different kind of way and definitely in your price range. Other than that mercedes look nice but repairs aren’t cheap. Modded acuras are pretty reliable and very sporty looking, same with Lexus “is” models. Really just depends on what kind of “expensive” look you’re going for
