I've never watched a full episode of EastEnders, Emmerdale, or Coronation Street. I may have nearly watched a full episode of EastEnders once when there was a bit of drama between the Mitchell brothers years ago and it got my attention while I was flicking through channels, but I haven't sat down and intentionally watch from intro to credits.

What would you say is the food culture in the UK?

mvision2021@reddit

1. A party is generally solely about socialising and drinking, with some food. You're right in saying that food is an afterthought in this case. However, we do have dinner parties, which revolve around the food and drinks. Extra effort is put into the prep and cooking of several courses. It's just something to bear in mind that there are different types of parties. 2. There is a lot of processed food in most developed countries that I've visited - in Europe, the US, South East Asia, East Asia. 3. Fish and Chips is less eaten than Chinese or Indian as a takeaway. Also, fresh fillet of fish is quite expensive, so naturally, it would cost more. Traditional pie and mash here is cheaper than Chinese and Indian. Greggs is cheaper. 4. Greggs is great. It's low cost convenience food that tastes good for the price. Food like this exists all over the world?

I've noticed Brits rarely ask about someone’s family background or heritage. Is this considered rude/nosy here?

Posted by Realisticopia@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 114 comments

mvision2021@reddit

Because it seems to be judging someone by where their family came from rather than who they are as a person. If one of the first questions someone asks me is “where are you from?”, it doesn’t give me a good first impression of that person.

Do you believe that taking vitamins and supplements actually helps you?

Posted by TSC-99@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 51 comments

mvision2021@reddit

Well, yes. I take vitamin supplements everyday and try to eat fresh fruit daily. I work full-time in an office and commute on a busy train twice a day. I fell ill only once last year, during the Xmas period. I’m also careful with hygiene. I wash my hands often and sometimes carry anti-bac gel if I’m going to be out eating and drinking. But everyone’s mileage may vary.

Washer recommendations - is it worth paying more for Bosch/LG over Beko/Candy?

Posted by appyapp@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 77 comments

My washing machine is a Bosch. I needed a low noise one since my kitchen doesn’t have a door. It was the quietest one I could find in my price range, about £500 (I think).

The “not nice places to be” part is probably by design. It’s better for business if eat-in customers finish up and leave quickly so more customers can order and eat in.

How would you feel if a coworker brought a games console to work?

Yeah that wouldn’t fly in my current workplace either. Some of my previous workplaces, it was fine in front of management during lunch breaks.

mvision2021@reddit

Not a problem. I worked in an office years ago where some colleagues played Mario Kart with a mini SNES plugged into their work monitor. That does depend on work policy and office culture though. A portable device like a Switch (with earphones) should be fine in most places.

Graduated from undergrad in 2002. Worked for a year in low paid jobs. Graduated from MSc in 2004. My income was around £60K in 2007 as a freelance web developer. It was lower in 2009 because of the financial crash and recession.

NHS. People generally more polite and tolerant than most places. Queuing, generally. (except for very busy parts of Central London). In my line of work, wages, and generally strong pound, which is a bonus when travelling abroad. Relatively mild climate. Yes, it rains often, but we don’t get much extreme heat, extreme cold, or destructive weather. No earthquakes. No dangerous wild animals really. Pretty much rabies-free.

Have you (as an average driver) ever regretted getting a car without cruise control?

Posted by plusnplump@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 289 comments

mvision2021@reddit

I've had it in my current car for the last 5 years. Tried it a couple of times for a few seconds on a motorway and haven't used it since. So it's not a deal breaker or a requirement for me. It didn't feel right having the car at a constant speed when other cars around fluctuate in speed, with some staying well under the average speed. e.g. 50mph in a 70mph zone. So I prefer to be in manual control of my speed at any given time and react to vehicles around me.

Girlfriend angry for peeing in the sea, is it a normal thing to do?

Posted by Nath4_n@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 4866 comments

I don’t think it’d be diluted thousands of times within a few metres of someone peeing. There is a lot less volume of water on the beach than there is out at sea.

Is it friendly or weird to bake for new neighbours?

Posted by Throw4way22311@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 93 comments

mvision2021@reddit

I’d say weird, or at least it’s too much too soon. You’ve just moved in and nobody knows each other. It’s pretty much being offered food from a stranger. You don’t know each other’s allergies and hygiene tolerances. Why would eat home cooked food from someone I’ve never met before. If you really want to give something, I’d buy something sealed and packaged like a box of biscuits. Even then I’d be wary of taking food from a stranger. I don’t know which area you’re at, but here in London, leaving it outside would be a no-no.

Does Britain Feel & Look Tired or even Slightly Poor?

mvision2021@reddit

Compared to some parts of the world, yes, it can feel grimey and poor. Most of my travel has been to East Asia in recent years. There is a big difference in cleanliness and between the underground over there and here. So when arriving in Heathrow and getting on the Piccadilly line, I really do see how dirty public facilities can be.

Another sign on the same road has been spray painted over too but it a graffiti type of way, which suggests to me that this wasn’t done by the local council. As a driver parking here, I cannot see the information clearly. Is it safe to park here?

I agree with this. It's gross because it's in the area that people swim in. Yes, there is decaying matter out in the ocean, but it largely gets diluted before it reaches the shore and that can't be controlled. To add urine to the shore when it could have been easily avoided in this case is laziness and shows lack of care or respect for communal areas.

If you suspect it's an old and corroded hand grenade, the safe approach is to not pick it up to examine it. I would call the right people to handle it.

Unless I was asymptomatic, I don't think I caught Covid until October 2023, which was confirmed with daily positive test results for about 10 days. Throughout 2021 to 2023 I was quite active in Central London, catching the tube and going to busy events. I was surprised I didn't catch it until only a year ago.

Garden gate banged all night. Neighbour complains in morning. How to express apology?

Posted by goybirl@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 490 comments

mvision2021@reddit

You’ve said sorry already. Best thing now in my opinion is to make sure the gate is secured and the banging doesn’t happen again. The neighbour sounds a bit unhinged so his opinion of you isn’t going to be valid anyway. A sensible neighbour with common sense should know it was an accident if it doesn’t happen again.
