I agree with banning private schools, children should have equal education and opportunities in life. When I think uniforms, I think of the ones in my local schools. Which were embroidered jumpers, white or blue shirts. Plain trousers or skirt and the school tie, I haven’t seen any bullying in my years to do with clothing etc, the low income families get grants to have 3 jumpers, 3 trousers etc and a voucher for school shoes and trainers. No room for bullying and not snooty looking 18th century cosplay.

Harm reduction and safety measures for children, who it’s inappropriate to see short micro skirts on in general isn’t blaming them for being attacked. It’s perfect for them to be leered at, subjected to harassment and isn’t pleasant for anyone normal to see, because they are children.

I know what victim blaming is far too well, thank you. CPS did not take my complaint further because of my clothes. You are preaching to the choir and also not understanding what victim blaming is yourself. There are people who look at kids inappropriately, that is a fact. If I said those kids were attacked as a result of short skirts, that would be victim blaming.

What was wrong with what I said, that there’s paedophiles in the world who look at kids? At no point did I ever say it would be the child’s fault should they get assaulted. Also, what’s wrong with *not* wanting to see teenage and young girls bum cheeks? Pull down your skirts, literally no one good wants to see that.

Wow really? We had unisex a PE kit that was so incredibly uncomfortable from infants school and above. Before that we wore our vests and knickers, boys also had to have a vest!

I understand it could be seen as that, but the girls clothes issue usually boils down to telling them to pull down their skirt and they have to wear tights, because they’re children and there are paedophiles. It’s not victim blamey so much as no one wants to see your bum cheeks and if they do you should run. I had this talk once and they were proved right when we had an assembly about perverts taking photos of us in our uniforms and having an fb group for it. There’s a whole category of porn for it tbf

Our cultures are different in that respect, we’re possibly in a worse economic situation and have been for a long time, and our attitudes aren’t the same. The above just explained why being strict about school uniform has impact in life

This is what’s happening with the local one near me, she has it set up on the edge of her drive (that stretched around the corner of her house) and she’s currently closed because she’s being told to get a street trading license after about 2-3 years of doing this. She’s got the food hygiene and allergen certificates etc, safety measures in place but the council has been very heavy handed and intimidating. I don’t see it as any different to farmers/small holdings with eggs and honesty boxes on the side of the road.

I love the cake huts, the one near me has a numberpad so you can’t just get into it and tamper with anything, and a camera so they can see who doesn’t pay. She keeps it in the side alley and has a little sign pointing to it. Unfortunately jobsworths from the council have said she needs a street trading license and haven’t processed her application for 4 months, although it’s on private property (she’s been doing this for years!) so it’s closed at the moment.

Me tbh. I only add the water I need at the moment to boil the kettle, never put heating on unless it’s a health hazard and just have blankets. Worked out how much it costs to use the washing machine and dryer so I now know how many times I can wear my clothes before using them and the exact amount I can fit in the drum. If having a quick bath (providing it’s not a shave etc wash!) I leave it in for my bf to save on water (it’s extortionate here) and just top it up. Upcycling furniture I’ve either found or get given by family, learned to sew to save hemming my clothes (I am short). Condiment packets and coffee from hotels etc lol. Sometimes I go round shops picking up stuff to convince myself not to buy it. Follow the Sam Vimes boot theory so I don’t have to buy things for years. Check restaurant prices so I know the cheapest meal I can have before going. But I have bipolar and previously got into thousands of pounds worth of debt so I think being a tight arse is now pathological damage control.

What do you even mean? I’m not taking OP literally? I’m saying it’s a speech pattern, which is why I gave the example of people exaggerating ‘always’, not that it literally means he’s always doing it?

I haven’t gone in a circle to say that at all, I’ve said that taking ‘always tells me to keep it to myself’ literally is ott? I’ve said that in reply to you saying it’s not pedantic because everyone’s taking it as he’s bringing it up all the time.

I’m not familiar with the meningitis case. Is it a factor in why you send so many people to A&E? I work in one right now where the overwhelming amount of ambulances or self booked patients have been advised by NHS 111, for things like whiplash, sore throat to obvious heart attack symptoms. There doesn’t seem to be a threshold from what I’ve seen, just that they all come to us to wait for 16 hours lol. Keen to know so I can explain to colleagues

I believe RE GCSE is mandatory across the board, I had to do it in a bog standard comprehensive. Your comment has given me a much better insight into Catholic Schools though and it’s nice to know it’s different than the bad things I’ve read. My partner went to a Catholic primary school and has mixed views but he was obvs young! Was it a single sex school? That’s the only gripe I have about sending future kids to one, I want them to be in a mixed school for a variety of reasons.

Same, I’m 29 but feel like I’m locked inside the age I was when it started. So many opportunities went from under our noses and the formative years for our careers or exploring who you are as a person etc were fucked because of lockdown. Most people my age I know feels so far behind even younger generations, aside from those who settled down immediately after school, I think we got shafted the most. I’m trying to do all of the above while also being older, biological clock ticking and being absolutely broke and unable to move out like I did before covid.

It’s quite easy to tell with how the parents say ‘my child has ADHD’ I think, a friend of mines son absolutely does NOT have ADHD, he’s just badly behaved. Then I had a colleague who was by all accounts loud, mouthy etc but when discussing rarely her son she all of a sudden was very softly spoken, explaining she never wanted to put her son on medication but she had to because he’s a smart boy and it’s ruining his education/chances in life. I would have thought my colleague would excuse her sons awful behaviour, but from that interaction I definitely listen to see if it’s an excuse.

Would you send your children to private school if you could afford it?

Posted by Infamous_Tough_7320@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 996 comments

moonbrows@reddit

No. Several of my close family members have taught in private schools and left because they don’t agree with it but also were disgusted by the environment. I was able to go on a ‘discounted’ rate and my parents declined. My children are the same as others and every child deserves the same education, I couldn’t be a hypocrite in that way.

One of the things that jumped out to me was the insistence that the handovers were trophies etc. I’ve been off for 2 weeks, went into my dressing room to sort out my uniforms and the little table I instinctively dump everything from my pockets on when I’m home from a shift had about 10 pairs of unused gloves in various sizes, 6 pens (which I need all the time), 2 small pocket scissors, micropore tape and I don’t even know how many handovers. You won’t find one nurse or hca who doesn’t bring their handovers home accidentally. You’ve got more important things to do If that’s something that makes her guilty beyond all reasonable doubt then every nurse is also guilty too

Why is dentistry not free in the nhs?

I went to a private dentist who did similar! I needed a root canal and the pain was so bad I just couldn’t cope and paid for a private dentist, £100 initial consultation, £300 to have the root canal but they didn’t put a temp filling in and just let the hole be there and then scheduled an appointment for a months time which would be £400. within about 3 weeks I lost the tooth, had to lay £150 for the emergency appointment and was told I needed x amount of teeth out and it would be about £1000 to start to get an implant… I now just don’t have a tooth because it was too much money and seemed quite convenient tbh.

Thank you, I’m so sorry that you went through this with your brother. I think even if it’s asking on Reddit how other people have been affected etc, it’s still a lot more than some people do and I hope you find the answers you’re looking for, the peace you deserve, and you have the love you need in your life. What was it like to have a drug addict as a parent?

Posted by northern545899@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 33 comments

moonbrows@reddit

Not my parent but my Auntie as a heroin addict, she was 14 when I was born and there’s still only me. of my big memories of her was in hospital with an impacted bowel from heroin use and a surgical removal of it. I remember my grandad screaming at her in the corridor and whisking me away. My childhood seeing my dads family is framed by my grandfather running down the street with a bushwhacker machete because dealers were sat on the windowsill, and her being in prison for breaking into next door for drugs - it was my best friends house and I wasn’t allowed to know she was in prison. It was only 9 years ago I found all the letters she had written on magic roundabout paper addressed to me saying she’d get clean for me. When her dealer arsehole girlfriend died we were all *happy* because that scum of the earth got this vulnerable girl hooked on heroin. I was in the hospital with her today, trying again to get her sectioned because she’s been schizophrenic (diagnosed once then forgotten about) from all the frying the drugs did, I miss her so much but my auntie is dead and whatever is left isn’t her. I really miss her, I’m the only niece and grandchild so it falls on me since my grandad died. He drank himself to death because of it. My dad won’t even step in because she attacked him hallucinating, she gets her and my grandma evicted from places because she smashes it up thinking there’s people threatening her. I really miss her but I’ll never have her back and I’m crying thinking about it. She was my best friend and I love her so much, but she’s gone.
