Traffic will be INSANE over there. It's already bad during rush hour and NO way Plano will allow any sort of mass transit to be built outside of maybe a Park and Ride for busses

While everyone talks about kids being raise by ipads and what not. The same exact things were being said of gen x and milienals about TV and the internet. I'd honestly point to the leaders in charge of basically anything. All the media and news basically shows how there are no consequences for bad behavior. In a lot of instances being infamous is shown as being just as good as being famous from an 'influence' perspective. If the adults in charge don't follow the rules why would any youth care?

How about no, to another potential fire hazard at your house. This is a grey area situation and I can tell you (used to work for the largest grid operator in texas) that load management has to be projected years out for a reason. Just slapping more load on to houses are is NOT a good idea, especially if the house is not on something redundant like a spot network

Is this Texas' next landmark? AT&T reveals new HQ vision

Aside from ATT just being to print money there was a good nugget of information on some building restrictions on the landmark. >Certain restrictions would apply to the proposed tower, notably that it could not exceed 280 feet and nor employ flashing, strobing, rotating or chasing light effects between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., among other specifications.

Depending on how big the boxes are, they might be considered bulk pick up, which the routine pick up won't deal with. Also, if they were cardboard, they might have thought it was for recycling, which doesn't happen every week.

Just a tip, always take a video recording of you walking through your new apartment before you move anything in. Keep this as your "baseline for move out cleaning". You can use this as evidence for any damage or "lack of cleaning" they might try to charge you with when you move out.

They're one of my other go tos. It really depends on the dish. Pork noodle dish at Chinese bbq is much better than no1. But the beef noodle and Dan dan are better at no 1. Personal preference I don't like the cheese powder they put on their popcorn chicken at no1.

You should be fine after a wash. Temps are going to be well above freezing during the day aside from Saturday. So you'll have ample opportunity to get a wash. It's the prolonged exposure to the salt that causes the corrosion.

Quiet cafe recommendations?

Posted by else_returnx@reddit | plano | View on Reddit | 18 comments

mechasquare@reddit

Really depends on the time of day. Sweet Hut is still popular, and I often see college students there at all times. Cafe Haswan right next door is generally not as populated but it has limited seating. Honestly, if you're looking to do work and are worried about loud or many people bothering you, you should consider co-working spaces like WeWork, Spaces, or Common Desk. A day pass is generally around or less than $50 a day, which covers your internet access and general amenities the space offers like coffee, call booths, etc.

I'm glad they're using an existing space rather than a green field build. It'd be crazy if they decided to demo the existing buildings (unless their conditions are bad). Do wonder what incentives Plano gave them for the move.

DART is no longer a transit solution for Plano (outside DMN paywall)

Posted by ShelbyHWilliams@reddit | plano | View on Reddit | 8 comments

mechasquare@reddit

I want to hear more about what the alternative is. Even in the post, it says "Free rideshare isn’t a viable public transit solution, but it shows just how upside-down things are." So what are our options? It makes no sense to pull out of DART without a viable alternative for those who depend on it. Has a phased reduction in service been discussed? It's unlikely we can flip all services on a dime and not have disruptions. The most important thing I want to see is that there is transparency in this transition and not a ploy to enrich who/what ever company gets the future contract. The city needs strong levers to deal with a FUTURE "upside-down" situation when/if that alternative can't deliver.

Plano could land Dallas Stars with billion-dollar stadium

I'd argue its a matter of attracting families and having policies address affordable housings needs. Both of which require funds that are better use of budget than a stadium.

NO WAY! Learn the lessons from Arlington. These sports complexes do NOT help the surrounding area increase business to "offset" development costs. We'll be paying for this stadium for decades through increased taxes. We're here closing schools and this is what Plano wants to invest in?

I really wish they put the specific number of voters that will be in the districts with a clear before/after side by side comparison. This, along with the reasoning for the splits/merges, would go a long way for transparency.

Question on extracurriculars from a parent

Posted by PalePurple1458@reddit | plano | View on Reddit | 4 comments

mechasquare@reddit

The rates I mentioned are acceptance rates. The lower the acceptance rate, the more competitive it is to be selected, which requires more outstanding performance and accolades from the student. I'll use UT Austin vs UT Arlington as an example. UT Austin is a hugely popular school for many reasons: academics in many disciplines, sports, campus life, and a huge active alumni network. That results in many students wanting to attend, making their application pool huge. They have the privilege to be selective. Like heinzenfeinzen said, being in the top 5% of a graduating class isn't enough to guarantee admission. That criteria is hugely important against the backdrop of **Texas House Bill 588**, commonly referred to as the "Top 10% Rule". This is a Texas law passed in 1997, that guarantees Texas students who graduated in the top ten percent of their high school class automatic admission to all state-funded universities. The law was updated in 2009 as part of Senate Bill 175, which allowed UT Austin to be more selective. UTA (Arlington) in comparison, has fewer applicants but many who are local to the metroplex. Because of that, they would admit those in the top 10% and those who have less accolades in their extracurriculars. The way I learned about this is to think of those extracurriculars as a tie breakers. If two candidates have the same academic performance, but one has shown active leadership amongst their peers and you can only take one, which one would you take? Of course, colleges want to be known for the academic success of students, but the type of candidates a university takes has a huge impact on the shared student experience. They would want students who are active in campus life vs folks who only focus on academics, all things being equal. This is a whole subject area is huge and way too complex for a short answer. Flipping back to your son. If he's in the Plano public school system, I'm almost 100% certain there are clubs at the school. If there's not, he has the opportunity to create one! I have zero exposure to what private and charter schools might have.

Question on extracurriculars from a parent

Posted by PalePurple1458@reddit | plano | View on Reddit | 4 comments

mechasquare@reddit

Most colleges are looking for leadership qualities or self-motivated activities associated with extracurricular activities that separate the candidate from the pack. Often, it's not enough to just volunteer or being part of a club. Being an officer in a school club at a minimum, being president/lead is ideal. If the extracurricular is outside, what contribution did they do that makes for a compelling story. EG what was their impact on the community and was it recognized? It also depends on what school you're applying to. I went to TCU, which has around a 42% rate vs a UTA which has a 81%
