What was your dreaded family Christmas or NY event?

Posted by wolf0lead@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 180 comments

keep_giving_up@reddit

Similar to this but a couple Christmas’ ago my nan was weeks away from end of life care. We all got dressed up to go and see her (like we did every year) and she was barely conscious. She woke up to sort of wave towards the presents she’d ordered for us before her diagnosis and went back to sleep. We all cried the whole way home, went home and got blind drunk. It was awful. Christmas hasn’t really felt the same since, but we’re started having family over to ours (which we couldn’t do before because we would go and visit my nan, and we’d not have time to prepare), so it’s different. Just very sad.

Is this not just a self fulfilling prophecy though? You’re told you’ll never amount to anything because you were poor as a kid so you never try anything because you think you’ll fail - because everyone has told you you will.

Not me but my dad. The night of the euros final he was sick, we thought it was alcohol induced and left him. Three days later he still wasn’t right and we thought it was maybe just a stomach bug. It’s a long story but it ended up with him passing out in the bathroom, hitting his head and an ambulance being called. His blood pressure was deathly low while his heart was racing. He ended up in hospital for a week, and three months later had to have heart surgery because of the long lasting effects. He had campylobacter poisoning. If you ever get a stomach bug and you’re on blood pressure tablets, stop taking them!! If his GP had told us this he wouldn’t have been anywhere near as bad. Also, if you have persistent stomach upset, insist your doctor tests a sample. It would’ve saved so much time and got him treated a lot earlier.

How to negotiate salary increase on a secondment?

Posted by Lillybet89@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 7 comments

keep_giving_up@reddit

Well, no. Because you’ll be returning to your original role. When you’re in training, you tend to be on a lower salary. You have very little experience of this role, and so you’ll start at the lower end of their salary bracket.

Is it safe to drive from York to Edinburgh safe for a first time UK driver?

Posted by uniquelikeall@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 44 comments

keep_giving_up@reddit

You’d probably have more fun on the train. York to Newcastle is an hour, so you can go when it’ll be quiet (mid morning or early afternoon), stop off in Newcastle and have a drink and a meal. Newcastle to Edinburgh is an hour and a half so you can get there the next day easily. It’s better than doing the road trip and one of you being tired from driving, being unable to drink, leaving early for an early night, being resentful if everyone is tired/hungover the next day.

No. If they can’t afford to pay you you’ll be getting laid off very soon. It’s best to start looking now than it is to be desperate when you lose your job.

No. Being frugal is doing things that save you money. Like cutting your own hair or thrifting clothes. Doing this is just making a very small problem a lot bigger. If you’re on a water meter too you’re paying for every drop.

How much do you care about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict?

Posted by Tummy_sounds27@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 236 comments

keep_giving_up@reddit

But the protesting will not make a difference. If our government was backing it, then fine. But all that’s come from our government has been words. The conflict was kicked off by an Iran sponsored attack, because it took the eyes of the world off them and Russia. It also meant that the deal between Israel, the USA and certain Middle Eastern states was put on the back burner. Stopping people from getting coffee at Starbucks won’t do anything. Posting all over social media won’t do anything. It’s all for brownie points amongst friends, and it’ll die down soon enough like everything else has done. These people don’t feel that strongly about anything they post about, they do it to look good amongst their friendship groups. It’s already happening.

keep_giving_up@reddit

Sounds awful but not much. It’s awful, it’s disgusting and it’s so, so sad. On both sides. But I don’t feel compelled to march or anything like that - it won’t make a difference. It’s another one of those things that has become so pressurised, where you have to have the right opinion and post the right things on social media, that it’s better to have no opinion at all. Someone cut me off because I’ve not posted about it - we’ve been friends for years and she finds it “appalling” that I’m not posting. I’ve got a closed instagram account with 60 followers, that’s not going to make a difference. I find all the boycotting hilarious as well - you have mobs of people outside Starbucks etc in London essentially saying you’re not allowed to buy from there. Go and get a job and make a real difference.

And the employer could easily argue that OP isn’t - it’s not had an effect on them, they’ve literally said they’ve been “giving their all” to the job, and that this came out of the blue. It’s more likely it’s to do with the annual leave request

You have very few rights in your first two years of employment. They could easily say it was the request for time off, and say it wasn’t done in the correct time frame etc. It’ll be very hard for OP to prove that it was because they disclosed a mental health issue

But their meal deal isn’t limited to just one snack item. If they had only one packet of crisps in their meal deal, and then a more expensive one outside of their meal deal, then it would be more equivalent. Even more if the drink + the crisps is more expensive than the meal deal, and they didn’t let you purchase it at meal deal prices despite it being their failure to make sure they had enough stock.
