How to negotiate salary increase on a secondment?

Hi, I’m been offered a 8 month secondment within the same industry, it’s a grade higher than my current role and lots of additional requirements and responsibilities. My main thing is I earn £36100 and they’ve offered £36500. Which is just not worth the sheer amount of extra work for £400. How do I put in writing to justify asking for more? I’m dyslexic and terrible as writing something like this, so all help is appreciated please.

I’ve never known anyone to successfully agree an increased salary on a secondment.

I'd be grateful that you're being offered any extra for the secondment. Often secondments come with no additional salary as they are investing in you and you gain experience. That experience will then get you a better salary in the future.

Yes but it’s a complete higher grade and a lot more travel and disruption without any guarantee of further job afterwards

Well, no. Because you’ll be returning to your original role. When you’re in training, you tend to be on a lower salary. You have very little experience of this role, and so you’ll start at the lower end of their salary bracket.

Disagree with this comment. Salary negotiation is a necessary skill that should be learned as soon as possible in your career because every subsequent negotiation builds on a previously negotiated figure. The number one factor that causes differences in pay between employees in the same role is their disagreeableness i.e. willingness to negotiate.

I'm guessing if it's a higher grade but the salary is barely different that you're at the upper end of your own grade and they've offered at the lowest on the new grade? I would say something like, "Thank you for the secondment opportunity. Due to my skills and experience in this area, I'd like to enquire whether I might be paid at a higher starting point within the grade." But you might be out of luck, the fact that you mentioned grading suggests to me that they've already looked at the requirements and responsibilities for the role and felt it warranted that pay. Plus as a secondment role, they may only have a limited budget for the role as I'm guessing it might be fixed time or linked to a specific project?
