I find German people the most like brits more than any other European country. Maybe a bit more direct & different variations of humour.

Paul McCartney, David gilmour, Liam Brady. I’ve had some good chats with Mr Brady over the years, being an arsenal fan it’s a big one to me! He even spotted me once and came over to chat about the Arsenal. Quite proud of that, the others were in passing basically.

I’m sorry you went through this. Reading what you wrote gave me shivers of bad memories. I hope you’re doing ok now. I found it hard to live a “normal“ life but I get stronger each year, find it hard to ever relax now as I don’t know what mood someone will be in.

It’s always nice to hear peoples stories like this. My maternal grandparents were a lot younger than my paternal so they didn’t have anything to do in ww2 apart from be babies, although my grandad does remember a German plane strafing east grinstead high street. My paternal grandparents was both in service, my Nan was in the women’s airforce, she used to log in and out the pilots on missions, which she said was very sad as many of them didn’t come back, she said never make friends with them is the best way. My grandad at the start of the war, was quite young I guess 18, and he was an engineer at first so was making stuff for the war effort & he was a military policeman, have no idea how they aligned, but a German plane bombed a local cinema which was full of young kids, he said most of the town turned up at the army recruiter the next day, he was a really strong swimmer (when my dad was a young child he used to hold onto my grandads back and they would swim around the palace pier) he joined the army & was recruited into the SBS he spent most of his time in Burma, I don’t really know much of what he did there only what others told me after he passed away, but I was told his job was to ambush the Japanese, we did have a load of Japanese money as kids which some was burnt which made for a good item to play with 😅. When he was unwell he did have nightmares about being in Burma, I was told when he was in the fire brigade he also had them as he would crawl along the floor and hide under the beds thinking he was still in the jungle, poor bloke, they never thought about ptsd back then I guess. He also told my dad that during the night you couldn’t see or hear anything apart from the insects/wildlife, like you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face, but when the Japanese would try ambush them, they would try swim across the rivers or whatever, that were full of crocodiles, so you could hear the screams of the soldiers being eaten. He didn’t get home to England until 1946, nobody’s sure why on that part, but his family presumed him dead until he turned up on their doorstep. Even a few years ago someone on ancestry thought our surname had been wiped out in ww2 and they was surprised that I am a living relative of their elderly mother (grandads half sister) Wow that’s brought a tea to my eye thinking about and typing that. Anyway he died at 74, he used to say to me when I was upset that he was lucky to have come home and watch his grandkids grow up..

She made it to 95, her generation went through a lot, I didn’t feel sad like I did losing my grandad, because all being perfect she would have gone a few years earlier, of course I missed her and I loved her very much but her last years were not good for her. Her dad died at 27 after being mustard gassed in ww1, survived for a few years after the end of the war then it got him, I can’t imagine the last few years of his life was good with lungs like that. I always feel like that generation were reflective of things like that or mine were.

To be fair when my nan was getting water infections I think it was called she was tripping out pretty good anyway. She used to feed a black cat that lived behind her television(there was no cat), she thought i was my grandad a few times as well even though he died 20 years prior, that was pretty tough to deal with in a lot of ways.

Posted by Macshlong@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 405 comments

jsf1982@reddit

The government turn the workers against one another, why should a train driver earn so much when you only make 25k a year? Why should train drivers earn so much that your tickets are £30 to go 10miles? In reality it’s bullshit to create working class people to turn on one another rather than waking up and seeing the top creaming all the money.

I’m no financial expert but it really feels like some companies go into dept so they don’t have to pay tax. Something very odd with Asda as well since new owners, I heard they selling property and renting it back etc. why would any company consider this a good idea unless to swerve taxes

I’m 41 now, my nhs dentist retired last summer, had 1 filling & a wisdom tooth removal in my first 40 years of dentistry. Went to the replaced nhs dentist with the new private one at £85 a check up, she looks at my 3 year old X-ray and tells me I have the start of gum disease, which if I don’t come every 3 months & visit hygienist £89 a session every 3 months my teeth will basically fall out, also I need a few teeth removing at £179 a go… I left the dentist absolutely gutted and depressed, then I started thinking hang on a minute this x Ray was 3 years old, why didn’t my nhs dentist of 15 years who’s always been fantastic mention that I have gum disease from this x Ray or that my tooth which has never hurt me needs removing… I went home, brought an electric toothbrush & decent mouth wash, called up and cancelled my new dentist forever. So in a few years my teeth will have either fallen out or I will have saved lots of money or both, what I do know is I can’t afford private dental care, so I have to make sure I do everything I can to ensure my teeth are as good as I can.

The class thing is the only way I can describe the difference in her reaction to how I or my family/friends would react. For instance the bag man was lucky it wasn’t my dad as he would have thrown it on the floor or sat on top of it. Although that’s not the correct way to go about it nor do I agree with doing that the fact someone expects to keep their bag on a seat while people are standing is a really ignorant rude way to act. Whereas my wife’s family would probably just stand the whole way with a stiff upper lip then complain about it over a hot chocolate later.

Yeah, she said she didn’t like confrontation & the fact she had to sit next to the man after that or something. We are from different backgrounds im a working class man and she a middle class private school girl. That is the difference I guess. 😆
