My sons parents evening was by video call and automatically cut you off at 10 minutes. What other modern practices feel a bit dystopian?

Can't believe this has been downvoted. Our education system is fundamentally broken, fails any child who does not fit into a very narrow spectrum deemed as "normal" and people are to think that's OK. It's not. Every child is entitled, by law, to a full time education suitable for their age, ability and any special needs they may have. It's literally written in the education act.

Parents evenings are pointless anyway. If you actually want a proper conversation with a teacher, make an appointment or even catch them after school for a chat.

What did your time during lockdown make you realise?

That the local and national environment is so much more pleasant when people aren't commuting and work from home. Working from home should be the norm. Employers should have to justify why staff need to attend in person and should get tax breaks for having staff at home. It's better for the environment, it's better for work-life balance, it's more acessible for those with disabilities in regards to accessing work. There's less traffic, less noise, less polution. It's just better.

I think the difficulty is you can't really trust any source without doing due diligence. We all know that sources that we should be able to trust, like our own government, have been caught with their pants down more than once during COVID. It's just too much effort for the general population to fact-check everything when the notion of a "trusted source" has been severely tarnished in recent years. Just the fact that something is labelled a "conspiracy theory" does not make it automatically false in the same what that just because something is labeled "government information" does not make it true. Public information was woefully poor during COVID, not helped by that self-serving arrogant GP (I forget her name) who was paraded on TV as a mouthpiece during lockdown :-( it's little wonder that people have just picked their favourite story and stuck to it.

Well not really. Some people really don't like things like this or find them intensely difficult and stressful do even really can't cope with them. They shouldn't have to explain why, that's private. Being pressured just causes these people intense stress and anxiety and is a form of harassment.

And this is the problem. You should not teach things that are incorrect. Especially when children call it out and are then told they are wrong or to shut up :-(

Not really. I have and own "nice clothes" but £200 on a single t-shirt? No, it's not for me. If you want to, go right ahead, bit it's still not for me. Neither are clothes with brands plastered over them. Again, if you want to sure, but not for me.

I agreed until the last paragraph. It should not ever be about how hard you work. This is part of the lie. How about contribution to society, kindness, being a good parent, being a good person, not grinding away just to feed the beast.

Mental resilience has nothing to do with what and who you have, it's an internal strength. What you describe is a safety net and a support network, not mental resilience.

People always say this but what about the right to live your life and end your life on your own terms. Honestly, this view doesn't mean your'e Ill neccasarily, it may mean that you have very clear views on how you will enjoy your life and clear views on what you want when it's no longer enjoyable anymore. Every adult, I believe, has the right to make this decision.

Thats the lie that they sell you... before you earn good. Should be if you earn good. And it changes so fast. I used to earn good money, but disability in the family changed that overnight and then all that tax I paid isn't worth shit because, the promise to support those who fall on difficult times just isn't followed through.

Even the feeling we now have that you actually **need** to buy a house started as government propaganda to stimulate the economy after the war. Before that most normal people rented and were happy and secure with that. The reason we are so fucked now are generations of people drinking the kool aid and following exactly what the government wanted them to, to boost the economy. This benefitted the individuals at first but now it's gone crazy and we are all suffering. It's making the rich richer and the poor poorer. Refuse to be a net consumer, refuse to save for retirement when you can't afford it, refuse to own property just because.....because it's no longer a gold and safe investment for most people. Once we stop feeding the beast, the government will be forced to consider the needs of real people.
