How much freedom did you guys have growing up?

dneste@reddit

I wouldn’t call it “freedom” so much as “neglect”. I was the youngest and my older siblings had moved out. My parents just didn’t care anymore (if they ever did). My father worked 16 hour days and my mother was a mess of undiagnosed and untreated mental illnesses. All of high school I had no curfew, no one told me to get up for school, no one took me to school or picked me up after football or track, no one made sure I did homework - nothing. I had a room with a bed and there was generally food in the house. Otherwise I was completely on my own.

If I get to 80 I think I’m going to start smoking again.

Anyone remember the Survival Knife fad of the 80s? The best Taiwanese steel sold at a Mall kiosk near you.

It’s even worse now. They just put “tactical” in the name of pretty much anything and charge $20 more for it.

How many of you were forgotten and left behind?

Posted by dead-as-a-doornail-@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 407 comments

dneste@reddit

I was forgotten pretty much the majority of the time. My football coach just started giving me rides home because I was still sitting there an hour after practice most days.

Did you watch this without knowing what to expect?

dneste@reddit

My wife was about 6 months pregnant when we went to see this in the theater. We made it about halfway through before the shaky-cam made her too sick to finish watching. I think it was 5 or so years later that I finally watched the entire movie! 😂

After all we've been through already, I feel this would be the only way for it to end

I like how it just follows Earth’s orbit for about two months before colliding. So we get to watch what’s about to kill us everyday until it happens.

Did the crips win?

Posted by dosassembler@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 371 comments

dneste@reddit

It was around when the franchise was first created and it was Montana so their gear was popular. Then there was an urban myth about how the crips has adopted the Rockies “CR” logo as crips branding. Not sure if that was real but it was the excuse used.

I grew up in Montana and for a while they banned Colorado Rockies and LA/Oakland Raiders gear in schools because they were afraid of gangs!

When did you stop asking your parents questions?

Posted by mpete76@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 582 comments

dneste@reddit

No because if I peppered my parents with questions I would have been smacked across the face. I learned early to just figure it out and be glad no one noticed I was there.

For your consideration, a fantastic documentary

No kidding. My parents would have been *pissed* if I had missed a bus and called them for a ride. I probably would have just walked and not even called.

I cannot count how many times I was forgotten as a kid after practices. It got to the point in 7th grade that my coach would just give me a ride home.

Fine china sets. My wife and I have older relatives who won’t stop gifting us their china dining sets because we’re the only ones of our generation who own a home. We have 3 sets we never use and I have no idea what to do with.

For some reason this show had flown beneath my radar. I recently started watching on a whim and it’s fantastic! Burned through the first three seasons in a few days.

My kids were still getting the free personal pizzas from reading through elementary school. I miss taking them to get their free pizzas. My wife and I would get the salad bar and a small pizza for us.

What did you drive in high school? I had a very fortunate childhood, and got my "dream car" the 1988 Jeep Wrangler Laredo.

dneste@reddit

I drove my dad’s old 1973 Jeep Wagoneer (orange with wood paneling!) and when that broke down I drove a 1976 Honda Civic. I’m 6’4” tall. 😂

I was kicked out of my mother’s church’s youth group in 1991 and never went back. The pastor told us to write a last will & testament and I left everything to my dog. He kicked me out because I wasn’t taking his ridiculous game seriously and my attitude was spreading.

I feel exactly the same. Born in 1976 and first kid was born in 1999. Seems like I was so focused on the family and career that 20 years flashed by when I wasn’t paying attention.
