Which happens for a few days once every 5-10 years in the UK. I think in all my years of driving there has been two incidents when the weather was so bad people were struggling. It's just not an issue needing a solution.

People who are/have been rude to retail workers, have you got any stories where you went back and apologised?

Posted by theslowrunningexpert@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 44 comments

bookfrombox@reddit

I don't think I've ever been rude rude. I've definitely caught myself when frustrated and had to say 'Sorry, I know this isn't your fault, I'm just frustrated at the stupid system'. Each time it's always been a very 'Yeah I understand' and it ends up getting escalated and resolved. I really should work on my potty mouth, it unbecoming. I do always give them good feedback!

What are my rights? Got detained and searched

Canary wharf is private property, you agree to be searched as a condition of entry. That's not the same as police using false pretense to stop and search someone on public. You'd be hard pressed to find a police force that hasn't deprioritised cannabis. The officer was absolutely using it as a pretense to do an unlawful search, he wasnt looking for cannabis.

It really is. Same with 'was nervous when questioned'. I've had 'why are you shaking? Have you taken anything?' it was like -2, I was shivering because I was standing still in the cold, not shaking.

The key issues, shouldn't be used as grounds alone. In a park at night. High drug use area. Dilated eyes. Nervousness when questioned. Those are all additional grounds. Whether they are true or not. The officers will claim they did not use smell alone.

It's pretty well known that a lot of officers are using MDA to bypass PACE. They want to search someone 'shifty' but they don't actually have the grounds to do so. MDA allows them to do a search with lot more wishy washy grounds that they can cite in defence.

The law hasn't changed. Police guidance to themselves has changed, that smell should not be used by itself as grounds. It's very easy to add a bunch of other grounds on top. 'They acted nervous when I asked about the smell, their eyes were dilated' etc.

Honestly, considering you have them your details when you had no obligation to do so I'm going to suggest you have no chance. It was probably unlawful, strictly, but the chances of you proving it is near on impossible and not worth the effort. It is what it is.

How many people have lied on their CV and been caught? And what were you caught lying about?

Posted by hopeful_encounter@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 38 comments

bookfrombox@reddit

In short. I had health issues that caused an unemployment gap. Whilst it was never explicitly said it was extremely clear it was causing issues with getting an *appropriate* job. So I made up a job to cover the gap. Didn't inflate skills or duties, basically copy and paated the previous role using another company. I know my skillset, I know what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. It wasn't the case of only having experience in retail and then fabricating I'm a rocket scientist.

bookfrombox@reddit

I've lied. Was I caught? Kinda. It was more 'I know you lied but we can't 100% prove it' sort of vibe. End of the day, I had glowing reviews, had senior managers sing my praises. So they were pretty much snookered. If push came to shove they might be able to prove the lie and terminate me. There was sufficient doubt plus the positive reviews that any legal advice would be to not force it. Worst case would be to polite part company.

How does UK keep groceries tax at 0%?

The UK has long maintained a policy that 'necessities' should be VAT free. The EU, because the UK demanded it, a knowledged grandfathering. Ie, if a member state has historically had a product as VAT free then it can remain so. This is why sanitary products ran into trouble. The UK wanted to make them VAT free because we now regard them as necessities. However the EU wouldn't allow that because we didn't regard them as such prior to entry to the EU (because they weren't invented yet).

No one knows what the feck they are doing. We all winging it. The fact you think you have the option of a high paid low stress lots of free time career says a lot. Why is extensive travelling whilst in your 20s so important? You're going to have to make sacrifices, we all do. If travel is so important to you then you're going to need to find a remote job. If it's a remote job then you're going to have to have a skillset that can't be easily outsourced to India for pennies on the pound.

Normally it comes down to 'you know, sometimes you're just too tired to cook anything'. Because as we know, putting a frozen pizza in the oven and waiting 15 minutes is far more work than spending 10 minutes ordering on an app. If it was something like 'its family tradition to eat fish and chips with my nan on Friday' or 'I don't have the skills or equipment to make X cuisine' i can get it, your life do as you wish. When you know we all know you're just making excuses because you're embarrassed to say the truth then it's very smile and nod. Especially when you then moan about money in another context. It's the same with people who always rock up to the office with a Costa and then go to pret for lunch, everyday. Had a colleague who got a parking ticket because she went to Costa twice in one day and the parking camera didn't detect leaving first time. She was working from home!

Did a fair few years ago. It's absurdly expensively and the quality just doesn't justify it. I get a gyro with work homies every now and again for lunch. That's pretty much it. When you listen to people's reasoning why they get takeaway you do more often than not have to bite your tongue.

Moving abroad for marriage – how do I protect myself & stay independent just in case?

You'll struggle to open a UK/IRE bank account without having an address here and probably with documentation to show lawful residency. If your home country has a bank that is present in the UK like HSBC that would be a good option, failing that any bank that has a Western presence. You should absolutely keep some money to yourself. The brutal truth, document your relationship. By which I mean if you're not an Instagram sort of girl, learn to be. You don't need social media but it's very possible that any marriage could be challenged as visa fraud. So having documentation of you being a legit couple, holiday photos, attending events together etc is better safe than sorry. Lady birth control isn't in my wheelhouse. Sexual health clinics in the UK are free and completely confidential (kept separate from your main NHS records) so if that's a concern pop into one of them and they will do whats needed. Regardless of your immigration status. If you feel unsafe do go to the authorities, ideally via a women's safety organisation. Edcucation can be complex. You need to look into whether the UK will recognise your qualifications. Masters can be very expensive and I don't think you would qualify for student finance. As a fellow belt and braces human, best of luck.

Should I return my car over the air-con making a weird noise?

Posted by old_survivor@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 6 comments

For the benefit of everyone else. Always pay atleast £100 on credit card (deposit is enough) it provides massive additional protections. Yes you are entitled to a refund if there is a fault and you ask for a refund within 30 days. If they refuse then ultimately you're going to have to sue them or accept the car. You should be able to sue in English court. Consumer rights act is UK wide legislation. You should check the contract and see what jurisdiction it says, that's not the be all and end all, but can complicate things. The general rule is if the seller markets it's self nationally then it can be sued by any home nation jurisdiction. Auto trader would be marketing itself nationally for example. The presumption is that the claimant, you, in a business to consumer claim gets home court advantage, ie the claim goes to your local county court, and the business must come to you to defend it. Having legal rights and enforcing them are too very different things, enforcing them can be extremely stressful. You do now need to put your big boy pants on and record everything. Make a diary, save emails, adverts, date and duration of phone calls, you did what when etc. If you go to court you want to have an evidence bundle you can give to a random person in the street who can easily go 'Yeah I understand what happened and what the problem is'. (Not giving legal advice, it's Reddit innit)

You have 30 days to return it for any fault, even minor. How did you pay? Is it a big dealer or a back alley outfit? You need to take it back to them and hear what they say, they might agree (in writing) to cover any invoice for cost of repair, in which case that might be a better option to get it fixed in England.

What you should do is going back to the salon and speak to the manager and ask for them to remedy it, if it's as bad as you say they should do so no questions asked. If for whatever reason you are happy or comfortable to do that. Then yeah go to another salon and tell them someone else butchered could they help.

Does the x at the end of messages represent a kiss? And if so, why, if Brits don't tend to kiss socially?

Posted by atzucach@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 14 comments

Technically yes. I feel you get three types of people. 1) they never text it to anyone. 2) they only text it intentionally 'Sorry to hear about your mother, always here if you need to talk X'. 3) the people who end every single message with it, in which it means absolutely nothing.

We don't know you, we don't now her. We don't know if you're lying or not. Mistaken or not. Do whatever you want, accept your own actions, don't seek validation from strangers to absolve you of your own actions.

If anything, those reviews would have resulted in reduction in payment. My general rule, just keep all your paperwork, any letters, download bank statement and bills etc.

If they are comfortable and confident to go mingle with the 'partners' or whomever at parties/events for a few hours then that's completely different to someone who stuck by your side all evening.
