How many hairdressers/barbers does your local high street have?

Relatively large town and on my walk into town I pass 12 in less than a mile on the way in. Mixture of old school ladies hair salons, more modern barbers, turkish barbers form about 50% of them, some beauty type salons and a couple if asian nail salon. When I moved here 20 years ago it had 3 barbers and about 6 ladies hair dressers. Don't think the population has increased that much and most of the barbers sit empty with one guy sat on his phone at the back

m44 and increasingly feel isolated by the world let alone the UK. Been working since I was 16 paying tax and never claimed a benefit except a short stint where I got housing benefits which topped up my enormous wage of £60 a week to £70 when my rent was £77 a week. Attempts to get support for my various health issues over the last 20 years have been largely ignored. I am paid pretty well yet I am always in debt although I have a very obvious drinking problem although sober 1 week now so I am trying hard. I support society, I want everyone to have an opportunity and have the chance to do well and feel looked after. But when I see self employed people skipping out on tax, which is a far bigger problem than people will own up to as it impacts a lot of people, and then the rich also fucking over the system through loopholes. I just don't understand it. If everyone did pay properly EVERYONE would be in a better position. But everyone thinks that stealing from the tax man is acceptable as its victimless. Society is the victim. Sadly there's so much corruption in government now as well its just like pissing into the wind to try and make any changes. I find it increasingly hard to seperate myself from the despair that we are constantly faced with.

How come a lot of Northerners have the assumption that Southerners are rich/posh/stuck up when there’s so many just as deprived areas down South?

Posted by harryandmatilda@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 405 comments

average_as_hell@reddit

I think its because if you're up North and you go south for a trip or a holiday you go and visit somewhere nice. If your only experience of the South is traveling about the nice bits it's going to skew how you perceive it. And to make it worse the only Southerners we generally meet are the Outdoorsy company owners who want to challenge themselves to the terrain and weather. Also if you happen to live in an area of outstanding natural beauty you have to live with all the properties being bought up by rich people from down south as holiday homes which is undeniably a problem around the northern national parks

I have worked in IT for 22 years. Since I started my wage has increased 133% with the majority of that increase arriving in the last three years. During those 22 years I have never received a significant payrise. Most have been below inflation and my favorite one was 22p a month! The email where they proudly and excitedly told me about my payrise was hilarious. Cost of living in the same time period has been 120% so I have just about managed to track above that for the time frame. Every time I am expected to get a bonus or payrise it comes to "We need to focus spending elsewhere" or "we haven't performed to where we expected for this quarter" This despite the company making more and more money year on year above cost of living increases.

in the UK and in fact quite a lot of countries they hate cyclist and it is acceptable in the media to hate and bully them (see Jeremy Clarkson) I think a lot of it is because people feel like they slow them down on the roads and sometimes it can be frustrating. Generally you slow people down for 30 seconds though. The other major issue is London. Lots of arrogant cyclists that fly about on and off pavements and run red lights. Most Londers claim to have almost being killed by these cyclists and I know of one confirmed pedestrian being killed on the roads by a cyclist in London although I am sure there will be more. Quick google in the last ten years there's been 4 with one high profile one in 2016 and all subsequent ones classed as E-Bikes where classification has been difficult. Having worked and traveled in London I have never had an issue myself. Keep your head up and look out and never had an issue.

Cycling. All forms. If you want to be part of a really hated and despised group of people that are openly hated this is the group for you. If you see a video of someone getting knocked off a bike it is acceptable to comment on it that you are glad they have been injured. Personally I love cycling and everyone I meet has been cool. I have a good group of friends who partake in pretty much every form of cycling in the uk and its fun to spend time with them. But its also great to do on my own! Stay safe out there though. Outside of cycling though I play Warcraft. I have made good friends who I have never met on there and we meet up once a week to have fun in game and chat the rest of the week whilst we do various quests and dungeons. The guild I am in itself are incredibly close knit and regularly do proper meet ups but I don't have chance to go to them. Great fun bunch of varied people just meeting up to kill monsters and get loot

A lot of my friends moved to London when they were younger and spent 5-10 years down there doing the London thing. Ultimately they have all returned to the midlands. They seemed to enjoy their time down there but slowly the expense, the traffic and dare I say a bit of a souless life drove them away. These were single guys though so maybe make a difference in a relationship.

Those of you who have had a root canal, how long did it take you to recover? Did you take the full day off of work?

Posted by cherryandfizz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 48 comments

average_as_hell@reddit

Ok I don't want to scare you. However the root canal I had was the worst pain I had experienced in my life. Mine was my front tooth though so I don't know if that changes things. I had mine done in the afternoon and took the next day off. People take different kinds of pain in different ways. For instance I have broken my arm, wrist, ankle, hand, thumbs and toe on various different occasions and carried on without much fuss. I even rode my bike back home with broken wrists, and the broken ankle. Didn't go to the hospital for the hands and toe breaks. I have also lived with a hernia for a year whilst waiting for that to be fixed by the hospital. All done now. The root canal on the other hand. My lord. The pain killers they gave barely did anything. When finished I could barely walk or move my neck. It was genuinely brutal. I will say though the pain of that was not much worse than the rampant infection that was slowly eating away at my face

I feel like life is promoted to you as some wonderous thing through your youth. Work hard at school Go to Uni Get a job with prospects Meet the one Have kids Then what? And as a kid you want to grow up to have all this freedom when ultimately there isn't any. You're tied down to your job, your house, society..... It was too much for my ex wife to bear in the end. She had been told all these things and once we had married and it was time to have kids she kind of fell off and didn't want any of it anymore. Took her a year or two to come to terms with it then she left me. I don't blame her for anything. Now I have a house, mortgage, job I am tied into but no wife or kids and ultimately although not impossible I am realistically to old and ugly to meet anyone else and have kids. And the more I look at life and where the world is going the more and more it seems pointless and completely and utterly insane.

No worries. Be safe. I thought about flipping to van life for a long time as I have no ties to anything anymore but my main hobby is PC gaming and I wouldn't last a month without that. Other people have made the point of needing a fixed abode for your job. You might be able to set up a mail service for this but I am a little out of touch on that front. A car isn't a big place and spending a lot of time in it is going to make it less and less comfortable. Keep in a routine, be polite to people, and expect that some people might be less than welcoming. But as stated be safe, this is your main priority

Get a 24 hour gym membership. This will provide you with access to somewhere warm to go, and also grab showers and such before and after work. It might be cheaper with a view on rent but if you want to eat properly it's not going to be straight forward. You may end up relying more on convenience food and takeaways which will get expensive. Car wise get something like a Citroen Berlingo and invest in some window covers. There's a few around here that managed to camp in quite an expensive part of town because they just sort of blend in. 7 seater ones are fucking massive to boot so loads of room to stretch your legs. Get a carbon monoxide sensor. Use it all the time. Cooking on a gas stove in your car is inviting disaster. Map out where your local Laundrettes are. You will need them and will be making frequent trips. Buy two sleeping bags and get them cleaned regularly.
