Do they speak a different language in Dominoes? If I worked with people who spoke another language, I'd take it as a great opportunity to learn a little bit. In the USA, lots of chefs learn to speak basic Spanish because there are so many Latin Americans who work in kitchens there. It's a pretty cool way to learn.

Of course not, but it's a convenient way. I've spent thousands of pounds and hours on language lessons in my life. If I could have the experience of total immersion in my work, it would be a great way to learn - although it doesn't replace other methods.

its everywhere NHS, people talk about it but they have this idea we hire oversees for cheaper wage, newsflash its all the same banding, there hired because they are reliable, don't question authority and don't join unions (in early years) its the managers of areas who hire, not a company or trust wide, I am a manager myself so I know too well that if I don't choose wisely its going to be my ass dealing with it

My suggestion grow up you big wet blanket. If your kids aren’t getting jobs in Dominos it’s cos they’re crap at interview, not cos they don’t speak another language. If they’re not going for jobs because brown people do them then perhaps they’re not best suited anyway.

Yes, because I'm not xenophobic. I speak multiple foreign languages, but and I work in an environment full of people speaking languages I don't understand. I don't get paranoid that the Bulgarians are plotting against me. People can speak to each-other in whatever languages they like, it's none of my business.

Wanting to work in an environment where you can understand the day-to-day conversations isn’t inherently xenophobic. People can have a preference for that without it meaning they dislike anyone. Some people get anxious when they can’t follow what’s being said around them, and that can make them worry others are talking about them—even if they aren’t. That doesn’t make anyone at fault, and it doesn’t make the preference racist. Framing every discomfort as xenophobia or racism is part of why discussions on these issues end up so polarized

Work in IT and at times am solidly in a minority and first language swaps over to Indian (I think it's Tamil) and I don't give a shit. I can still do my job. Sometimes I take the piss that I am slowly learning the language as I understand words they are using but those words are always swear words or specific words for the software we are working on

No same room as me. I come into a room at 7am and sit alone for an hour and a half. Then my team come in and for about 7 hours the language is mixed but can be hours of nothing I understand. I don't know what peoples experience is like of IT work but it can be very monotonous and I am not client facing so can go a whole day with no human interactions at all sometimes

Some of my most productive moments have been working in spaces where I have no understanding of the langauge at all. Zero distractions, bliss. IDK maybe if we taught our children to speak other languages instead of treating it like a weird exotic skill only for the uber-rich we wouldn't be such weird freaks about everyone having to speak English. But perhaps they are "Imbalance" and that stops them? No idea what that word means in your sentence btw.

I’ve encountered it in a factory job where a lot of my colleagues were Polish. Obviously they spoke English but if they were chatting to eachother they would usually do so in their first language. It wasn’t a problem. It didn’t feel hostile or like they were purposefully excluding me, nor did I automatically assume it was about me, they were just chatting to each other. It wasn’t a big deal.

Ignoring the hilariously poor use of English, I don't find it uncomfortable at all. I lived for a couple of years in South Korea, and can't speak Korean. I spend a huge amount of time in China and can't peak Mandarin or Cantonese. My colleagues there can speak reasonable English, but don't if they aren't directly addressing me, so the language I hear for the majority of my time in the office isn't something I can understand. It doesn't bother me at all. I'm at work to work, not to listen to what some twat considers "banter", but is typically just someone with little sense of humour thinking they are funny.

At first I thought you meant working in another country, and I was going to say yes, because that’s what I do, working in another language permanently. But when it’s in the UK and not English (or Welsh or Gaelic in those areas), I would feel a bit isolated and uncomfortable not knowing every time someone laughed if it was about you.

Whether the reason was language or something else, I'd not like any workplace where I'm excluded from the general conversation.
