Are there any comedians you DON'T like? Why?

I really cannot bear Lee Mack. His voice is annoying, I don't think any of his jokes are his own, everything I've ever heard him say I've already heard from someone else, or it just isn't funny at all.

What finally pushed you into quitting a job?

I worked for my dad. I worked so hard to fix many mistakes made by my brother (who had recently quit because his wife, girlfriend at the time, told him to), I kind of snapped after a while and sent him a message explaining how mad I was at him for the mistakes and for leaving me to run the business pretty much alone, I couldn't work more than part time and I was struggling so much. Anyway, I found an email from my dad to my brother's wife, telling her that she was more of a daughter to him than I ever would be, so I quit that day. My dad hasn't spoken to me since, that was December 2023. The best advice I can ever give anyone is to never work with or for family!

How do GP appointments work?

That's dreadful! I don't know why they have such a problem with actually seeing people! My husband had the flu at Christmas time, he's still not 100%, and it took the doctor five weeks to diagnose a chest infection, they kept saying it was just the flu.

My surgery only does phone appointments. So you call reception, tell them what's wrong, they get a doctor to call you back sometime later, and they try and fix you over the phone, sometimes they want a photo sent via email. If that doesn't work then they'll see you in real life, same day if you're lucky!

Kraft cheesy pasta, my husband and I love it! It's such garbage food, and I'm pretty good at cooking, but it tastes good for something cheap that only takes 15 minutes to cook! Alas I haven't seen it for sale anywhere in the last year or so

I've never actually seen it, but there's a scene in The Thomas Crown Affair where someone steals a Monet, and folds it up in a briefcase. Canvas on a stretcher doesn't fold, and the painting would surely be damaged by folding it. It's ridiculous and the reason I couldn't watch the film.

So bad I quit! It was so toxic and I had such awful stress and anxiety. I went back to being a stay at home parent for a bit. I'm worried because I need to find a whole new career real soon while trying to figure out childcare, but I feel so much happier and content not working for an awful person anymore

What’s your kryptonite food item? The one you don’t even buy because if you do you will sit and eat a whole packet to yourself?

It's meringues for me, not bought ones though, homemade. Homemade meringues are the best food in the world, I only ever make them probably once every 5 years or so, because I will quite easily eat every single one!

Two from the same workplace. One was my manager, he died in a diving accident in the public swimming pool. The other my supervisor, he fell in the canal and didn't survive

How many people still do Sunday roast on a regular basis?

Posted by JHock93@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 417 comments

amloha@reddit

I go through phases of doing it. I'll do them for a month or so before getting bored. Sometimes I cook a whole chicken, but usually I'll do a quick roast using chicken breasts that cook in half an hour. I do make everything from scratch though, I can't bear most packet food.

What are "old money" type families like in the UK?

Posted by miningquestionscan@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 556 comments

amloha@reddit

Really lovely people. In my place of work we get a lot of 'old money' people and every one has been nice. We have one regular who travels up from England often, he always wears this almost threadbare jacket with a pocket hanging off, he could easily pop over to the tailor/outfitter up the road but he never does! He almost always buys something from us when he's in, and spends time telling stories of his current visit North, or of his past sometimes. He's one of my favourites.

This is for the Scotland part of the UK, I really can't bear the hate on the English! I'm from Scotland (though my parents aren't), and I will never understand it. It's especially evident when there's some kind of world sport happening and almost every person will support whichever team is playing against England. It's ridiculous.

My ten year old has mayo on most things, including Sunday roast, even Christmas dinner. He puts it on ramen noodles, sometimes he dips crisps into it. I don't think he has a limit.

My friend is related to a local man who killed his mistress and their toddler ~45 years ago, he always denied doing it and the bodies have never been found, he was finally put in prison for it last year I think, he died not long after that. It's a very well known case where I live

I have the opposite problem. I keep getting summoned but have no way of attending due to lack of childcare. It's been three times now and every time I get a letter I have to prove why I can't go, and a year later I get another letter. I wonder if and when I'll stop receiving them?? Will it go on until my son is old enough to look after himself? Who knows.

When was the last time you told family members you loved them?

I never have because they never have. The strangest thing I'd ever heard in my life, when I was 19, hearing my first long term boyfriend saying I love you to his parents and them saying it back. I'd never heard those words before. Thinking back, it's such a sad thing for me to have experienced. Even sadder, my parents never actually loved me, that's the reason they never said it.

People who have quit smoking, how?

Posted by hxlywatershed@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 948 comments

amloha@reddit

I just decided to quit one day. I bought nicotine patches and that was it, after I finished all the patches I needed a tiny bit to get me by so I bought one of those nicotine mouth spray things which did the trick, I used that for a couple of weeks. I didn't smoke again for ten years until a friend shared her cigarette when we were drunk haha, it didn't make me start smoking again though, I've done that a handful of times since and never been tempted to start again, I think the cost puts me off!
