Airline pilots - what kind of watch do you wear?

In my case, I got into watches after I ran an automatic watch that popped off my wrist while in a wheelchair after an accident at work. I saw all the little gears and springs which fascinated me. I REALLY got into watches - started buying Chinese Alpha watches just to see how they worked - taking them apart and putting them back together. Once I got into that, I started to buy higher and higher end watches - got a few Breitlings, Tudors, and such. I gave my Dad a Tudor and a Breitling for his 65th birthday and for his retirement. I inherited them back when he passed away in August 2017. My home was burglarized in November 2018. I lost everything of financial value including the 128 watches in my collection. That took all the joy out of my collecting watches for the longest time; I only recently gotten back into them and have fallen into that rabbit hole again. I think I have 30 or so watches now ranging from Chinese Alpha and Seagulls to a Rolex Cookie Monster. I am fighting my desire of buying a Patek 5711 or 5712 right now. I have the cash I just don't know if I want to spend so much on something that will have limited use. I have been thrifty in many ways over the years and I don't know if I really want to spend double the amount of my current most expensive watch for something like the Patek. I am going to go into an AD tomorrow. Let's see if I have control of myself.

LOL - I like to go back to my roots when I was at a military school and learned how to use them prior to learning to fly as part of my Aerospace Science III course. I still look at sectionals and play around with them. I guess those paint chips I ate as a child makes it so I like those types of things.

I don't know what was removed. As for my posts, what someone posts may be odd to some but be great to others. As for my flying history, I started to learn to fly at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, VA back in 1988. I got my license during the summer of 88 just before I went to US Army basic training at Fort Jackson, SC (delayed entry). I was an Army reservist while working at Los Alamos National Laboratory hence my knowledge about security clearances, etc - I had a Q from DOE and a TS-SSBI due to that. Yeah, I just doxxed myself a little but it probably will help you understand my past and why I know things such as these. I left LANL and started my own business which was computer controls for special munitions. Still had my DOD and DOE clearances with that business; a requirement if you work with special munitions. I sold my company a bit over a year ago after having a "widow maker" heart attack. Any other questions?

Very interesting. I got into watches when I was hurt and broke an automatic watch when it was rolled over by my wheelchair. I was fascinated by all the little gears and springs. I started buying watches just so I could mess around with taking them apart and putting them back together. I stopped buying watches after my home was burglarized back on Thanksgiving 2018. I just recently got back into collecting watches; the burglary ended my joy and fascination for a very long time.

Density altitude

Posted by Silver-Dime4265@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 18 comments

Weary_Valuable3300@reddit

It is actually pretty easy. First off, we need to discuss the 3 types of altitude in aviation. 1. True altitude - your actual altitude above sea level 2. pressure altitude - your altitude above the point where the barometer would read 29.92 inches of mercury 3. density altitude - pressure altitude corrected for temperature. Density altitude is the altitude the airplane "thinks" it is at according to the airplane's performance characteristics. When it is hot and the air pressure is low, air is thinner and aircraft performance suffers. When it is cold and pressure is high, it performs better. Let's say you are in an airplane that has a certain length of takeoff roll at a certain altitude - 2500 ft at 2500 ft elevation. On a hot day, the plane will think it is 4000 ft above sea level and it increases the roll to 4000 ft. Another issue with high density altitude is the performance of the plane in regards to maximum capabilities. Let's say that your plane has a maximum operating altitude of 12k ft. On a hot day, that plane might have only a 10k ft maximum altitude. I learned density altitude flying Cessna 152's in the mountains of northern New Mexico. My home airport was at an elevation of 7150. It often hits 85 degrees in Los Alamos during July that summer. The barometer was 30.02. Because the temperature was so high, the density altitude was 10447. We had to do climbing turns for a VERY long time to be able to get home.

To the people who became airline pilots for the pay only , what’s your POV of the job ?

As someone that has had a Workman's Comp claim in the past (fell on ice at work, breaking my right elbow and shattering my left ankle), we get nowhere close to 100%. I got 80% from my employer (self insuring) but the state law was for 60% at that time.

When I was on WC leave, I got 80% of my income because my employer was self-funding and treated workers right. If I didn't have that employer, I would have gotten a maximum of $200 a week.

Send off an email to the Exec and your boss stating what you to clarify what you were told that way there is documentation of what was said. I would also talk to an employment lawyer about this response from the Exec.

I am sorry to restart this thread but 2 of the eye witnesses that saw the streak were military veterans that saw SAMs over Vietnam. The one that was a Wild Weasel pilot had seen 100s of SAMs fired at him - his job was to get SAMs launched at him so he could Standard and HARM missiles at the radar systems. The other was a Navy helicopter pilot that flew over North Vietnam on SAR missions and saw SAM launches all the time. Are you trying to say that those witnesses do not know what they saw? They are experts in what a SAM launch looks like.

How to respond to “IT never had any problems, so no problems solved, so no bonus?”

Weary_Valuable3300@reddit

Add another life-changing event - changing jobs. This is a way to secure a pay raise AND getting away from the husband is another bonus from changing jobs. I wish you luck. You are stuck in a shitty situation and it is time to shit on the boss's desk by quitting AS SOON AS you get the new job. Don't give notice - they will walk you out the door as soon as you turn it in. Do not leave documentation - it is a problem for your replacement and they will hopefully get a bonus because it. ;) Let us know how things work out for you.

Is $1000/month doable in Mexico?

They are still cracking down on it. According to Sonia Diaz, an Mexican Immigration attorney based out of SMA, there are 50 people in the INM facility there that are pending deportation for this happening. As for doing it the way you describe, you probably CAN get away it but there is no guarantee. Last week on the Expats in Mexico group on Facebook, several people commented that virtually everyone on their flight into MEX got 30 days on their FMMs even if they showed that their return ticket was longer than that time period. In truth, it is entirely up to the INM Agent that you see at Immigration. If they are in a bad mood, they could give you only 7 days. PAY ATTENTION to what they put in your passport. Many are no longer giving the FMM form but just marking it in the passport. I used to do the 180 day shuffle for years. I qualified for residency but just didn't do the paperwork. When I got 7 day FMMs twice in a row, I decided it was time to get TR and went to Laredo to do it. It hasn't been a problem since.

Weary_Valuable3300@reddit

You won't be able to live in Mexico on that income because you won't qualify for residency. You MIGHT be able to do the 180 day shuffle and try to use FMMs to live in Mexico on. The problem is that INM is now cracking down on people using FMMs to illegally live in Mexico - FMMs are for tourism and not for living in the country. I know many people that have gotten 7 day FMMs after doing the 180 day shuffle for years on end. If you allow your FMM to expire or don't have one, you are subject for deportation if you are caught. There are about 100 people in the SMA INM facility being processed for deportation for overstaying their FMMs. Some of them are Americans and Canadians. That information was posted on the Expats in Mexico Facebook group by Sonia Diaz a few days ago.

I either spent the $15 for new rollers, belts, etc if it was really bad OR just used rubber rejuvinator to recondition the rollers. Between that and replacing a fuser a few times as part of a maintenance kit, they are still running great. I have JetDirect cards in them too.

Sounds like me - I have gone to the HP Laserjet and Color Laserjet Universities and will not recommend their products to ANYONE - even my worst enemies. I MIGHT recommend them to a Mac user though. ;) I still have my LJ 4SI going great. It has close to 3 million pages through it. I also have a couple of the LJ4m+ that have over 1m pages through them. I only had to do basic maintenance kits into them or redo the output roller assembly because the accordion jams.

That is quite shortsighted by them. I left my job with the DOE to open my own business. I paid tuition reimbursement, training and certs with a yearly raise with earning a certification based upon what the cert was in - underwater basketweaving would get you $500 a year, CCIE would get you something like $30k depending on job functions, responsibility and current salary. I did quite well because I had a 0 turnover rate for years with a growing workforce. I decided to retire in early 2023 after surviving a widowmaker heart attack. I sold the company and am now enjoying life to the fullest.

It is insane the number of certifications you can earn over the course of 25 years. I averaged 1 or 2 a year on top of the required ones for our contract. If you are smart, you hit up your customers to pay for your coming training the next year with end of fiscal year monies in September. "Do you remember how I did X, Y, Z for you last year that saved you $x or y time? I was able to do that by getting training from X. If you have any extra monies that need to be spent by the end of the fiscal year, I would love to be able to continue to learn fixes like that". My funniest story was when I was told to contact our Apple JIT provider and ask about laptops. I asked how many he wanted. The guy said "I don't care! I want all of them! I need to spend $250k!"

There is a reason why I was able to retire earlier this year at the age of 50 - hence why I said I wasn't looking but curious. It had to do with the fact that I was headhunted for jobs to be filled with the best in the industry. Hint: if you get headhunted, try to get them to give you stock in the company for an incentive to take the job. It worked for me with Compaq, HP, Rambus, Nvidia, Seagate, Cray, and a few other companies I have worked for over the years.

Roadrunner, Titan and Frontier Supercomputers will disagree with you. I worked on the design, building and deployment of them. I cannot get into much detail about exactly what I did because some of the things are classified about how they are configured and what software packages used.

I am not DOD - I am DOE. I had a DOD clearance because I worked in nuclear programs and need it for the Air Force and Navy programs that went with them. I worked on supercomputers such as Roadrunner, Titan and Frontier - setup, configuration, deployment, and administrating it. As a level 3, I actually went in the field often enough because level 1 and 2 couldn't figure out the fixes and it was assigned to me to find a fix. I worked those calls until they were resolved.

In some ways, I am being deliberately vague to avoid crossing the classification line. Yes, I worked on classified programs. About my education - I was a single parent of an infant and couldn't do much around the house once my son went to sleep. I decided to do my university work then. I found I liked education and kept at it - some people have a hobby of gardening or woodworking - my hobby is getting postgraduate degrees! Special projects such as designing/setting up a wireless network system that would interface with a camera system flying in a racetrack pattern at 10k feet above the ground with 24 Nikon cameras taking pictures every half second. The data from those cameras were sent to a ground station at Twentynine Palms MCB and then retransmitted to about 100 computers in an area the size of DC. The system was designed for the IED program in Iraq. We could see where the insurgents came from and where they went. Once that was mastered, we used the system with Marines in the Falujah University at the MCB to help them with their house to house searching. Another special project was setting up and configuring the world's fastest supercomputer at the time - Roadrunner. Helped IBM correct issues with the interfaces between the Cell and Opteron processors. Another special project was being sent to ORNL to help setup, configure Titan and Frontier supercomputers. I have built entire AD environments from the ground up. Provided level 3 support for both classified and unclassified environments. Mentored lowered tier techs on how to provide support in a more time-efficient manner with lasting fixes. Daily duties ranged from support, configuration, and management of classified and unclassified networks such as Red, Yellow, and Green WANs and SIPRNet. I worked with Juniper, 3com, and Cisco networks. Configuration, deployment and maintenance of the STU-III and STE telephone systems. I was also assigned service calls for tickets that the level 1 and level 2 techs couldn't figure out and I worked them until they were resolved. I still remember someone asking me what I would do to troubleshoot an issue where the user's email date/time was always way off - the clock in Windows was set fine but the emails showed things months and years off. I immediately said to check the CMOS battery because that is a sign of that being bad. The guy sat there for a few seconds looking at me and said it took them 3 months to figure it out. I was deliberately vague when I posted originally. I expected idiotic answers to this post and I wasn't disappointed.

Nothing - I actually had academic scholarships for all my degrees. The only reason I did the degrees is because I was a single parent of an infant and didn't have anything else to do in the evenings once he went to sleep.
