How American people view Europe after first time visiting. Specially after exploring more than one country in Europe ?

Posted by EdAlex1993@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 105 comments

UnknowableDuck@reddit

This. Different languages, sometimes Different Holidays and Poltics but ultimately people are the same everywhere. Reading first hand accounts from the past and you'll find a lot of similarities.

Question for Americans ,if your family’s been in the US for a long time, do you still know where in Europe your ancestors came from?

>Tbf the "we're Irish" people are often both? I have children with ancestors who came both  Right? Like you have more than one ancestor unless you're a fucking Targaryen or a Hapsburg or something lol.

>though exact figures are difficult to verify. Especially when doing any geneology work and your relatives loved to drop off the census records for a decade or two and reappear elsewhere or have changed their names and it wasn't recorded etc. My friend is going through that. I imagine it's easier if your family has stayed in the same area for generations though.

Are shared rooms in college genuinely the norm or is it just an opinion that people can have if they want?

Posted by JustGeeseMemes@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 333 comments

UnknowableDuck@reddit

You seem earnest and curious OP, which is refreshing because we get *a lot* of insults/judgements phrased as questions that basically boil down to "Ew, America." And we're hyper vigilant to the point of rude defensiveness.  A lot of seemingly innocent "questions" are just so they can run back to their subreddits or friends and be like "Americans don't have wheeled garbage bins!! SO WEIRD RIGHT?" Or whatever . Or they also ask questions that seem obvious, like America is not another planet, it's just a country. Filled with humans.  So yeah there's *a fuckton* of shit to be angry at America for, but it get tiring being trolled when you want to be helpful for the genuinely curious and end up realizing said person is just being an ass.

UnknowableDuck@reddit

I'd argue it's down to what sells in what place versus another. If no one buys other varieties of cider it's not going to get ordered. When I was in Portland there was a *huge* craft alcohol subset of the population, so there was always different ciders, beers, IPA'S, Liquor etc...

For my school it was the 10th, 11th and 12th graders (so, 15-18 year olds for the Non Americans, 16 is generally the age in which people can first get a drivers license) who could leave for lunch.

I've encountered some people who fast, mostly those who are intermittent for weight loss reasons and a rare few Muslims who've done it. It's not super common though.

I grew up rural, I rode my bike, played in the woods, I'd spend the night at friends house, go to town and rent a movie if I wasn't watching it on tv, played games. I played outside and read *a lot* basically. *But* I grew up pre-internet. We didn't get internet til I was in High School.

UnknowableDuck@reddit

As someone with a very, *very* unique name I am *begging* parents-stop giving your kids names that you think will look neat on the dust jacket of a YA novel. *Please*. No, not every name needs to be John, Sarah, Mary, Tom etc- but we don't need "Khalessi Acheron Schenectady Skipper Jones running around or *whatever*."

What are you more afraid of happening in the nondistant future: World War 3 or Civil War 2?

With a civil war, while I definitely don't want *that* to happen-I can at least take comfort in the fact that the rest of the world, the rest of humanity will go on.  But a world war? Idk if anything would survive it.

How long do people usually remember their pets after they pass away?

Posted by ironandfire@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 993 comments

UnknowableDuck@reddit

Forever. I remember every pet and still mourn them. Lost my soul dog when I was 15, the other when I was 24, my beloved cat who got attacked by a coyote and then-died 3 years after that. I'm 43 now, I will *never* forget them. My babies.

Do Americans really eat that much for breakfast like in that Pleasantville movie?

Posted by jdpm1991@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 228 comments

UnknowableDuck@reddit

Did you notice the way they reacted to the breakfast in the movie? Looking nauseous and shocked? Reese's character even remarked on how bloated she felt afterwards. The answer is no. Even in the context of the movie, it's a no. Such a huge breakfast would be for special occasions, holidays, special Sunday breakfasts etc. There's a decent contingent of Americans who skip breakfast, having only coffee or an energy drink.
