Well, if you want full control - you need to use white lists for apps and websites. It's pain in the ass, but I don't see another option, unfortunatelly.

We had an employee like that. He kept forgetting solutions that had already been shown to him more than once, and instead of solving problems, he would tell users that it was supposed to work that way. In his free time (at work), instead of improving his knowledge, he played WoW. I asked him several times to read the documentation, keep notes on issues that had already been resolved, and I showed him where to find the relevant information and solutions. It was like talking to a brick wall. Eventually, I honestly told my manager that this employee could not handle the workload. After that, they had a talk with him, and he resigned of his own accord. We then found a more hardworking and competent employee.

TrueBoxOfPain@reddit

I think about this a lot. I’ve been at my current job for eight years. There aren’t many jobs here, and the pay is basically the same everywhere (and it sucks). I don’t think you have to love your job. I hate working and, honestly, life in general, and I’m not sure what else I’d do. But in another life, maybe I’d sell guns for hunting or sport.

We don't have secure boot enabled because of stupid government software unable to work if SB turned on. But, we have third party AES 256 encryption and boot agent.

Company wants me to install an “Advanced Monitoring Agent” (N-able / SolarWinds N-Sight) on my MacBook — but I also use it privately. How do you handle this?

Posted by Upset-Marsupial-4746@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 46 comments

TrueBoxOfPain@reddit

*Is it normal or acceptable for a company to install such an agent on a Mac that’s also used privately?* Normal to install an agent. Not normal to use work equipment as private.   *If it’s required, is there any safe way to separate work and private use (e.g., separate macOS users, FileVault, etc.), or is that pointless once the agent runs system-wide?* I think you can use virtual machine with software like Parallels Desktop.   *Would it be smarter to just buy a separate personal MacBook and use the company device strictly for work?* Absolutely yes!

What Retention Policies does your company have in place for exchange mailboxes?

Posted by Kindly-Wedding6417@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 33 comments

TrueBoxOfPain@reddit

A small business with around 100 employees. The CEO was strongly against deleting any employee emails. As a result, we rarely asked anyone to clean up their mailbox. When the 50 GB limit was reached, we enabled archiving, which added another 50 GB. Once the archive filled up, we upgraded the plan to increase the mailbox to 100 GB. No one ever managed to use up the full 150 GB—employees usually left the company before that happened. When an employee left, their mailbox was converted to a shared mailbox, the license was removed, and the mailbox was stored for a year until a general review of all mailboxes (which, in practice, never actually happened). Later, we ended our partnership with Microsoft, and the unlicensed mailboxes were not migrated to the new system. That’s how the old emails ended up being cleared out.

50GB PST is a mess. Try to create archive policy and use exchange online in-place archive to the affected users. A way to block wps office?

Posted by Educational-Yam7699@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 20 comments

In most cases, users don't care where the software installs and just press "Next" to proceed. So, I tried installing WPS Office several times on a test machine to see where it installs: `C:\Kingsoft\WPS Office` and `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Kingsoft\WPS Office`. Next, I created a script to pre-create those folders and restrict access to them. As a result, the installation now ends with an error. [https://pastebin.com/hpaC4JiH](https://pastebin.com/hpaC4JiH)
