Why Has It Been Nearly Thirty Years Since Britain Won a Eurovision Song Contest?

Yeah, it’s baffling why generational talents who keep selling out massive arena tours like Jemimi, SuRie and ElectroVelvet haven’t walked it every year, for us, the most popular country in Europe that no-one has any pre-existing tensions with. Strange.

I think the Sunday hours compromise is the best balance. But the way that’s been chipped at over the years - staggered opening times between different shops, “browsing time” loopholes to let shops open earlier - is taking the mick and needs to be clamped down on.

Yep, same here. Took me years to realise it was something I could possibly have because the only kid who had it when I was at school seemed to just use it as an excuse to be a dickhead all the time.

Can a regular be a challenge 25 test purchaser?

Transmit_Him@reddit

I didn’t dispute that it’s a way for the retailer to shift blame to the cashier. But in crafting your tenuous hypothetical, you’ve sailed past my point. So here’s another spelling it out: A 24 year old goes into a shop. The cashier thinks they look over 25. They don’t ID them and sell them booze. They haven’t broken the law. They also haven’t broken the c25 policy which is to challenge people you *believe* look under 25. The 24 y/o turns out to be a mystery shopper (as in OP’s story) sent to test challenge 25. The mystery shopping agency goes to the shop: “aha, your cashier didn’t ID our under 25 test buyer! They’ve not followed best practice!” The cashier is reprimanded for not having challenged 25, despite a) not having broken the law and b) having in good faith followed the policy. It hinges entirely on a subjective assessment on whether someone who is objectively over 18 looks early 20s or late 20s. Challenge 25’s flaw is that it focuses too heavily on a specific age cut off and treats that as a law in itself, rather than focusing on common sense.

“if the server makes a mistake, and the person who they didn't id was 23 then no laws are broken.” Yes, that’s exactly my point. Treating failure to ID someone over 18 as a reprimandable action is overkill and essentially entrapping a cashier into it is ridiculous.

Right, but to treat an error or lapse in strictly adhering to Challenge 25 itself (when the purchaser isn’t even under 18) as something worth reprimanding/punishing the cashier, as seems to be the case for OP, feels like overkill. It’s a best practice tactic to cut out sales to under 18s, which isn’t what happened. Someone they knew was over 18 bought alcohol, they didn’t ID them. No laws were broken as a result of it. There’s a point at which common sense and employee experience needs to be taken into account.

Transmit_Him@reddit

It’s a fairly stupid policy though given “looks under 25” is incredibly ambiguous and open to interpretation. It’s entirely possible for one person to think a 23 year old looks 27, say, and so not ID them. And given they’re over 18 regardless, getting reprimanded for that would be questionable.

Zero marks, is marking fair?

Posted by SleepyTester@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 58 comments

Transmit_Him@reddit

Yeah, for 14b, she’s made a statement, but it doesn’t fully connect with the question, not enough to get the one mark. It’s similar for 18. She’s listed a load of statements, but they don’t clearly correspond to her working, so it’s hard to see where the error came in (getting the lower interior angles mixed up). But given there’s a tick on the higher interior triangle angle result, you’d assume it’d be worth one mark at least.

When you found out Pokémon Sword and Shield was set in the UK, did you feel anything special? (curious perspective from Japan)

Posted by Miserable_Self_4632@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 54 comments

Transmit_Him@reddit

Lapsed/casual Pokemon fan. I was interested enough by it to pick it up. I found the game pretty underwhelming, mainly because there’s just so little to do, especially in the Wild Areas which seemed to be the core of their UK-inspired design concept (presumably based broadly on national parks like the Lake District and Dartmoor). Earlier Pokemon games were filled with secrets and puzzles but the Wild Area was just miles and (not quite) miles of nothing. I excitedly rushed over to a ruined tower at one point, thinking it would have something to offer, but nope. Nothing. Generally though - as far as I can recall - I thought it was a nice take on the UK. Being more than one city meant that it didn’t just end up as London and its associated iconography. While it did lean into the more twee pastoral stuff, that’s a good fit for Pokemon. Just wish there was more to do there. Hop can get in the bin though.

Yeah, that feels like an even bigger scandal to me. There’s no reason a carton of blended fruit juices should have aspartame or ace k in, let alone a “pure” fruit juice. Morrison’s were really bad until recently for selling “apple juice drink” - which is watered down apple juice pumped up with sweeteners - in near identical packaging to their apple juice.

If you’ve local Waitrose (or Dobbie’s garden centre) check out their orange squash, that’s just sugar (but not the other flavours). Also some at M&S (pricey) and Rock’s, which is stocked in Sainsbury’s at least. I’d given up on squash for years until I found those recently.

Karma drinks do a range without sweeteners: orange, lemon, raspberry, ginger, cherry, cola and a passion fruit & mango one. San Pellegrino until recently did a sweetener free range but it’s now got steviol in it. Not ideal but I find that doesn’t affect me like aspartame and ace K do. Similarly Soda Folk used to be sweetener free but now have steviol.

I used to but haven’t in several years now. They only really have two functions: virtue signalling and fund-raising. Neither are inherently bad, but have become corrupted the past 25 years or so. Once the poppy became a social obligation policed by gammony busybodies, it lost its original meaning, for me anyway. I don’t need a physical symbol to remember the war dead, certainly not one that increasingly glorifies war. And the British Legion seems increasingly sus as charity, providing questionable levels of help to veterans while sitting on large reserves and continually blowing money on tacky “awareness” campaigns. The cascade of ceramic poppies on the Tower of London was ostentatious and crass. Doing a bombing run of poppies over the Channel was incredibly tasteless. It’s needless PR stunts for the sake of it. How much awareness do they need to raise of an annual campaign that is, essentially, official government policy and advertised by every person on TV? It’s just performative mourning.

I was 10 when it launched, but had had Sky for five years or so, which meant it didn’t have that much novelty (especially given the poor reception in my area). 100% was good though. The biggest problem it’s had over the years is that, beyond Milkshake, it’s never had a consistent idea of why it exists. Seems to have settled into “BBC 1 without the licence fee” the past few years, which is at least something.
