What’s the worst place you have ever been on holiday?

Egypt was the worst travel experience of my life. I hated it. It has nothing going for it at all. Alexandra is what I imagine the last surviving city in a post apocalyptic world to be like. Buildings there literally collapsed onto the street.

Is this anything to worry about when buying a property?

I saw something about this the other day. That is most likely caused by use of gritting salts on the path. The salt gets into the bricks and accelerates weathering. As to whether it is a structural issue, I have no clue. But If it were my house I'd be sorting that out.

Why is the UK so expensive?

Actually that's not correct. Businesses are high energy consumers and competition for their business is strong. Unlike residentisl business can negotiate with suppliers and most sales are agent led and not digital meaning they can get better prices. If you're a business owner try negotiating

Yes it requires those things. But the information is out there if people go looking and the game is the same: spend as little as possible, earn as much as possible, invest and keep going. The best time to have gotten started was 20 years ago, the next best time is now. I got serious about all that stuff about 10 or 12 years ago. I was £28k in debt, had next to zero at the end of every month (usually well beforr the end of the month) and panicking. It took 3+ years to work my way out from under the debt. During that time I learned difficult things that could get me ahead at work, lived as frugally as I could bear and looked for extra earning opportunities. It was really fucking hard. After that I kept up the focus. Noe I'm conpletely debt free and have a good size pension pot that will continue to grow. Life is good now. Some people might say that I am lucky but really I just followed the formula.

Where do people buy jeans these days?

Asda - £17 a pair and they have outlasted my last 2 pairs of Levis by a long way. They fit just as well as any other pair of jeans I have owned.

I’m 41 and my younger employees don’t believe in the 90s/early 00s that we’d go clubbing while in year 10/11. Can others confirm?

Like I said, all my mates were jealous. McDonald's was the best place to work - as many hours as you wanted, free food, burncare and a guy who sold blim.

Those sunday papers were a fucker. The guy who bought the Times always had the tiniest letterbox too. I used to get up at 5:45 to deliver 60 Sunday papers for £6. It would take me an hour and I had to go to the shop 3 times cos each bag could only fit 20 in.

That was still 10 hours work in a McDonald's mind you. I used to earn £3.10 an hour and was the envy of my mates. Wimpy used to pay £1.50 an hour!

Van life looks so cool—do people ever just end up doing it without really planning to?

That type of digital nomad existence is really hard to pull off long term. Taking a career break and then hitting the road for a year would work like that and probably be loads of fun. Or if you've got the financials going longer. But trying to do it on a permanent basis and earn an income is super hard. I've crossed paths with diginomads whilst travelling and its not all its cracked up to be. And as for heading south for the winter. My folks did it last year and nearly every retired European with a van does it. Campsites can be €30-50 a day and all the wild camping spots are packed and local authorities are starting to crack down. Also the weather can be just as bad. Personally we love travelling in our van for our holidays but we'd never want to do it for much longer than a few weeks. My folks manage 6 weeks tops and their van is much nicer than ours.

That reminds me of a lodger I had who used to criticise materialism because he was a minimalist. I had to point out to him that whilst he may only own one bag of clothes and some headphones he was living in my house and using all my stuff!

And seriously boring! Being stuck in a van in winter whilst the weather is shit. All your stuff is damp and you've got nothing to do would be so boring.

What's the going rate for CDs at a car boot?

Posted by behemuffin@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 26 comments

ToviGrande@reddit

Yes people still buy them, but it depends on what they are. Run of the mill copies of very popular pop won't sell as anyone who wants it will already have it. But anything slightly esoteric or niche might go for nearly new prices. CD collecting ia becoming quite trendy for younger people who missed out on it growing up with only digital music. And there is a renaissance in older people who are becoming sentimental and also realising they miss the ceremony of hard copy music. Anything collectible can fetch a decent price. Personally I now regret selling so much of my old music collection. I'm glad I hung on to what I did but there are a few things I miss. If I were in your shoes I'd do a big sort out. Keep the stuff you love on the shelf and buy yourself a nice retro hifi of the standard you couldnt afford as a kid and enjoy it once more. Stick the stuff your on the fence about in the attic and then ditch the rest at a charity shop.

Why do living standards in England seem so low compared to other European countries?

Go for a walk outside the centre of Dublin and you'll be shocked. There's no public waste collection and the litter piles up in drifts. People don't pick up after their dogs so the streets are covered in shit. And there's nowhere for the homeless to go to the loo so they just shit in the street. Its disgusting there. Same can be said for San Francisco BTW. Having been fortunate to travel quite a lot IMO Britain has a litter problem. But on the whole we do better than most places. Which also comes as a tragic shock.

I think you're letting people's online conduct colour your opinions too much. I wouldn't allow that to stop me socialising. Socialising is essential for us to enjoy life and find meaningful relationships. Isolation, especially from people with differences to ourselves, is what causes a lot of the problems. It's too easy to form erroneous opinions when you're in a niche.

That sucks. I found it unbearable to walk by the river near me after there was a flood. There was so much litter and plastic and shit in the trees. I cleaned up a bit but it would have required a massive team to have sorted it out. We're wrecking our homes with our crap.

Posted by Embarrassed-Ring1638@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1702 comments

Smoking is disgusting and most people I know who smoke want to quit. Perhaps taking away the pub might be the catalyst a lot of people need. I don't see why the government are being such pussies about it. Smoking, vaping etc should be banned everywhere. We'd go through 2 weeks of trouble and then everyone would be cool.

Here's what happened when scientists tried to drill into the center of the Earth

Posted by DavidM47@reddit | HighStrangeness | View on Reddit | 122 comments

ToviGrande@reddit

For a clay used to make ceramics this process begins at around 250⁰C and continues to around 450⁰C. During this phase of firing the kiln is vented so the gases can escape because they will corrode the heating elements and shorten their lifespan. I suppose that if there was a lot of pressure and nowhere for the vapours to go they would remain as super heated liquid where they would also be a solvent for other minerals. But my understanding based on my A level geology is that this is commonly understood and not be knowledge. Its why you find quartz veins in many different rock types.

I think that if you looked into some of the higher quality research you might just start to lose your grip on "reality". Be prepared for an ontological shock.

On fairness to Gregs, whilst they may not be the finest establishment they are one of the few places that haven't price gouged and still allow you to grab a quick bite to eat without feeling horribly exploited. For that reason I am fully in favour of Greg's, may their empire expand into perpetuity!!!
