My company executives thinks it can replace 100 percent of our help desk teams with AI agents.... This year.

Posted by NickBurnsCompanyGuy@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 978 comments

Techguyyyyy@reddit

I think having a level 1 service desk agent is actually attainable. Help desk jobs still need to be in place but you also need content creators to feed all the information the AI is delivering to your users via your service system (service now, Jira, etc). I’d say having an agent can certainly allow companies to decrease certain staff but definitely not eliminate everyone

Suggestions on how to increase my AI token usage

Posted by twistoffate4@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 307 comments

Techguyyyyy@reddit

The premise of your post is something a lot of companies are doing. At my firm, we are always pushing directors and managers to THINK of operation tasks and other daily workflows that could benefit from AI. The companies who don’t use AI will be the ones who don’t exist but there is a strategic transformation path that you need to develop and follow. Basing someone’s performance off token usage is stupid though. That’s not a strategic path. Thats a budget disaster.

Question about PatchMyPC

It’s a no brainer with the auto packaging. Obviously the only caveat is there will be certain software you still have to package if PMPC does not support it.

Are we understaffed?

Posted by bigmac______@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 261 comments

Techguyyyyy@reddit

It seems viable tbh. Our helpdesk is notorious for leaning on easy tickets like password resets and other very simple tickets. You’ll ask them what they did all week and 10 out of 30 tickets are something that takes less than 5 minutes to solve and close. I’m much more interested in having our helpdesk do more critical work.

Are we understaffed?

Posted by bigmac______@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 261 comments

Techguyyyyy@reddit

I’d argue this model is becoming quickly outdated because AI is forcing teams to work with less people. I’m not saying OP is staffed appropriately but we are in new times and there is no perfect formula. All I can say is executives are pushing for teams to reduce staff while being able to do more while leveraging AI. The quickest way I can see that happens is most service desk/help desk teams will be automated at some point and end users will depend on agents to answer their questions.

A lot of exec positions work 12+ hours a day so I’m not surprised about 14 hours. What’s funny is the people who are so dead set on working 8 hours and then complaining because the CTO is ā€œmaking so muchā€. And ā€œi don’t make enoughā€. This is a big reason why.

You have to wait each year to renew. The price gets more expensive each year as well. think year 3 is 15-20% more than year one. Year 2 is 10-15% more than year 1. Why are you not planning a migration to windows 11?

This problem is as old as time. C execs getting involved in things they don’t know or understand. Most are pushing to use Intune as it’s included with E3/E5 but what they all fail to realize is that a proper sccm environment with an engineer to manage it far outweighs any other RMM tool and I’m not sure it’s even close. Not to mention, a lot of people know SCCM whether that’s a vendor or direct hire.

Well imanage is managed by folders but within the ā€œfilterā€ options, each user can collapse the folders within a matter and just look at all the documents like you are explaining. It’s as if the folders don’t exist. As long as the documents are named in a sequential order, I don’t see the issue.

I guess it depends on your workload. It could be an overkill. As long as you understand Azure then AVD follows the same dynamic. It’s all virtual architecture. Nerdio just gives you the tools instead of you having to develop the whole thing from scratch.

Sysadmin salaries

Haha that is going to be the narrative no matter where you end up. IT is a cost center at the end of the day but if you provide a certain value to your company, which IT does then you should be paid for it. A lot of companies don’t care to pay IT but there are a ton of companies who do care. In my opinion… look at hedge funds, law firms, bio tech or some other finance gig. It’s not for everyone but it pays a good amount

If cloud prices keep going up 10% every year, I don’t see how it would be sustainable. I could absolutely see a time when people go back on prem for a lot of systems but not all. I personally don’t think exchange email on prem is necessary. It’s probably the only thing that should be cloud.

iManage Cloud Admins - How do you handle archiving closed files?

Posted by EmptyRedecans@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 4 comments

Techguyyyyy@reddit

If you want to pm me I can give you some ideas. High level, we use Activ Nav (info gov tool) to scan all of our repositories which can find data based off usage. For any archive files we use GDSI tool called DMSync. With this tool you can archive files to 1 KB, effectively making the cost against your storage $0 for those files. The best part is a file stump stays in place so the file is still searchable from end user perspective. You just need to right click and restore it get it out of warm archive. Most law firms task this with IT and it’s nearly impossible to tackle that without stakeholders including some sort of IG policies. Working with your GC could help. If you want to get more advanced, start thinking about your hot, warm and cold storage data policies. Understanding your OCG’s is solid baseline.

One thing to also be aware of is that small/mid size companies typically follow suit of their larger peers. When fortune 50/100 companies invite employees back to the office then it’s almost guaranteed that perspective will flow their the company chain. Obviously, some companies will have full remote staff because I think it actually attracts certain talent but collectively I think we are going to be living in a hybrid world (3 days office 2 at home) for most companies by 2030.

How are cleared IT pros handling the remote job drought?

Techguyyyyy@reddit

To be totally honest, being fully remote is so incredibly unhealthy. Nobody talks about it, but if you look at the science behind it. Your immune system, mental stability and everything in between will be shot if you worked a majority of your life with no human interaction (some physical). Going to the office 1-2 or even 3 days a week really isn’t that bad.

Help me understand where AVD falls within the world of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS!

Posted by manamonggamers@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 13 comments

Techguyyyyy@reddit

I have an AVD/Nerdio environment setup at an am law 200 firm. What I can tell you is this; as the customer you’re responsible for all of the things you would be doing in Citrix. For example, installing windows updates, maintaining a golden image, updating applications, creating VM’s etc. nothing necessarily changes in terms of Microsoft doing any of the management for you. I guess you could call it an IaaS if you had to choose one. The thing to take into consideration with AVD is the resources (VM’s) are owned by Microsoft. So if you have 50 users who need a VM, Microsoft is essentially leasing the VM to your users BUT it’s not guaranteed unless you purchase a reservation through Microsoft for VM’s in which case Microsoft will guarentee you have a VM(s) to use. I wouldn’t read too much into this unless you have a massive company but it’s important to understand at the minimum.

Help me understand where AVD falls within the world of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS!
