Running out of patience for this field.

Big same. I'd learn to be an electrician if I weren't pushing 50 and need my current salary. Though I will admit that some years back I did find a decent job with decent people. The first year was basically what you described, complete disregard of my time, wanting me to explain like they're 5 why Microsoft would role out an update that breaks things, etc.. Through patience and boundary setting, I've built a report with the team to the point they report a problem, I fix it, tell them they're all set, and they say thanks and move on with their day. I'm still so very done with technology though. Mostly my eyes are changing and working on screens for hours on end is becoming problematic.

I'm so effing over it an AI in general. I would pivot careers if I weren't approaching 50. Like, nothing tech. I would be an electrician or something. But I simply can't afford to take the massive paycut that comes with becoming a noob again.

Bow hunt. But realistically, you can go out for weeks/months at a time and not find or catch anything. Hunting isn't a reliable means of sustenance unless you're hunting squirrel or birds - and even then it's still not a guarantee.

Oh. Whatever. I don’t really care about that. To be honest I’ve only done it once because some egotistical sales shitbag was like “What do you even do here?” (As in what are we paying you for in a dickhead way, in a meeting with C suite) and iTookThatShitPersonallyMeme.exe’d him directly. I didn’t target all users - just his laptop. I’m also jaded and petty after being in this industry since 1995.

I'll add - every now and then create an emergency only to correct it in less than 30 minutes. Maintain that "wizard" like viewpoint from higher ups. Every so often when I start hearing the muttering "wait, what does that person do again?", I'll make some mundane change somewhere (like DNS), let things break and people panic breifly and swoop in and fix the problem I cause and collect the reward - the reward being that I'm being paid to be available in case my automations fail for whatever reason and I fix them before those failues become noticable problems. Some may say this ethically wrong - I say "the company will let me go at the drop of a hat if they so chose, so I view my salary as a retainer fee while I learn other things and work on pivoting to consulting". At the end of the day, I'm only in this for myself. I care not about c-suite, sales bro's and share holders.

Heh. My partner and I both work in tech. They work on an internal team as a dev. Loads of daily meetings, tasks, testing, etc.. They're very much glued to their desk all day. Myself on the other hand, am a department of one in my company and over the years I've automated about 80% of my job. My days are getting up and getting ready(ish). 8am stand up call. Check emails, checks teams, review tickets (if any) and check automations to make sure they're still humming along. On-boards (general term that encompasses a few things) are also scripted. I fill out a CSV it the provided information and feed it to the snake. 40 minutes later it pukes up results and my users are ready to use what's been built (something that if done manually would take considerably longer clicking through 100 menus in different platforms). So now - I spend about an hour (maybe 2) "checking in" and the I screw off to the couch to read, study, play a game, work on a hobby, etc.. Partner now likes to say "Whatever, you don't really work" and my reply is now "I'm not paid to park my butt in a chair. I'm paid to be available. Don't hate the player, hate the game."

What is DevOps, really

Yep. I came to this realization a few years ago under similar circumstances. All projects are now maintenance windows during the work week and people have the option to come in and deal with tiny outages, or they can stay home and work. No more weekend/holiday work.

Not your problem. Plus if he's part of the younger generation, his attitude makes complete sense. That's not to say they're lazy or whatever, just that they see that they will likely never have the chance to live like say Gen X or senior millennials while paying out the ass just to exist in a shoebox. I don't blame the lot of them for adapting the mindset of "I work so I can live, I don't live so I can work.".

I used to be that way. Then I hit the part of my career where I just don't really care anymore. Sure I keep things running, I monitor, I upgrade if I must but for the most part - I depise IT and it's way too late to change careers (though I'm considering a pivot to DevOps might actually be feasible). As another user said - find a hobby. Leave work at work.

My team came to the same conclusion. Windows 11 with Office/Teams just sitting idle will consume almost all 8GBs and lately it seems 16 isn't really going to cut it in 6 months to a year.

20+ years in. I can't even begin to narrow down the dumbest thing. There has just been too many at this point. Let's do it the dumbest and least secure way fucking possible because it's easier on you and your assistant."

I used to early on in my career (I’m nearing my 50’s). These days not so much because I genuinely don’t give any shits about IT anymore. I learn what I gotta, do what I gotta, but come 5 o clock the computers are powered off and I fuck off in my vegetable garden with a couple of cold beers and maybe a joint for the rest of the day. I’m literally here for the paycheck at this point.

Which Linux Distro should I use to make this laptop usable? It uses windows 10 and it's very bloated. I want to see if I can make it usable for anything.
