County IT here. Straight chillin' on No Change Friday. County 911 dispatch got hit on their phone system, but they had redundant systems in place and were back up and running in about 30 minutes.

I assure you it is true LCOL. Median income in the county is 35,000. 4 bed, 2 bath apartments for 1400 ($350 per person) are a dime a dozen here. 55k is not overpaid for our support people. If they were just phone support, maybe, but they go do desk side troubleshooting, printer and laptop deployments, etc. They make it so me, one of the network guys, never have to interact with end users. That itself is worth the pay

Dealing with Unreasonable PC Request?

Then it’s time to be the asshole. I say this as an admin with a father with dementia who I look after quite a bit. WFH is still work. Are they working for your company or are they a caretaker drawing a paycheck from your company? It can’t be both. They need to fit their needs around what the company can provide, not the other way around.

AD? What’s that?

Dude, I’ve been in network infrastructure for 20 years.  Even when we hire on someone experienced, it’s accepted that it takes them 3-4 months to really get up to speed on a new network. You are in an entry level network position.  No one is gonna expect much out of you the first 6 months.  Learn, ask questions (but don’t keep asking the same ones). Don’t be afraid to tackle stuff outside your comfort zone.  Let ChatGPT be your friend. In fact, spend the 20/month to get ChatGPT plus.  It is a surprisingly competent network engineer and good at answering questions.

We clearly won the military battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan.  But you can win every battle and still lose the war due to politics.  The failure in both those instances were in the administrations, Congress, and the State Department.  We were in both countries long enough to build infrastructure and schools, stim tide of fundamentalism, and educate an entire generation in both countries.  But that doesn’t get votes or $$$.  So we fell trap to the same thing that happened in ‘89.  Create power vacuums with no plan, and let the crazies roll in and take control.

Because no real vet would ever say that.  It’s a brother(sister)hood.  And anyone who doesn’t want to be identified as a vet isn’t going to get the designation on their license anyway.

And now, as long as you have line of site, that issue can be fixed with a few hundred dollars worth of Ubiquity airFiber gear.
