Are gap years common in the US?

SeparateFly2361@reddit

I saw this movie “How to Have Sex” and these kids who had just taken their GCSEs flew to Crete unsupervised for a spring break party vacation. I was surprised and wondered how common that is in the UK. I can’t imagine a group of American 16 year olds flying internationally alone like that

Why do you think there’s more Canadians living down in the US compared to the other way around even tho the latter sounds like the more popular move?

SeparateFly2361@reddit

You can’t just up and move to another country just because you want to. I’m sure there’s tons of people who would love to retire early and move to Canada for the healthcare. Unfortunately we’re chained to work for the insurance

What is America’s “posh people” accent?

Posted by alyhasnohead@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1943 comments

SeparateFly2361@reddit

There are accents associated with being poor or working class, and the absence of those accents means the person might be posh. But there’s no way to know, you have to use context clues

When taking a dump, do americans just wipe or do they wash with water and soap ?

Posted by Revolutionary_Lab527@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 80 comments

SeparateFly2361@reddit

Bidet attachments are becoming more common in the US, but I have the impression people are just rinsing, not soaping up down there. Is that what Europeans do?

Do people who grow up in big cities ever feel overwhelmed by the constant crowds?

Posted by GlitteringHotel8383@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 188 comments

SeparateFly2361@reddit

It’s probably about your expectations. Coming from a medium sized city, I would be surprised and dismayed when I would go to events and attractions in big cities. But they’re anticipating the crowd so they’re used to it

What are schools like in America?

English is taken all 4 years of high school. Math is also taken all 4 years. A student who wants to go into STEM in college typically takes the following sequence: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus. But plenty take Algebra 1 in middle school and end up taking AP Calculus in Grade 12, which is equivalent to A Level Maths

To me it’s a term from Gone with the Wind, or Ken Burns’ Civil War. I think Southerners might use it to refer to Northerners sometimes nowadays, half joking

Are we putting our daughter's education at risk?

SeparateFly2361@reddit

Hehe fair. I’m an American that feels like a foreigner in my own land and I generally prefer British everything. But for some reason the assumption that British education is better because it’s front loaded irks me a little bit. What exactly is the utility of a 5 year old knowing their times tables? Most British students end at GCSE Maths which is the equivalent to Algebra 2

It is often said that in the US class system is merely a function of wealth. Is that true?

Posted by wheninrome5000@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 101 comments

SeparateFly2361@reddit

I think because most Americans just think of themselves as middle class; there’s not many people who really think of themselves as working class as opposed to middle, and if they do, it doesn’t seem like a big part of their identity. Or maybe they just don’t realize that it is, although it manifests in other ways

I think the difference is though, when their ancestors arrived in the US, they were marginalized and excluded, which resulted in them forming insular communities where everyone they intersected with was also an Irish immigrant or their children. I agree though, the modern expression of this identity is a bit embarrassing

Not an alcoholic but.... What am I ?

Posted by nightfire_83@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 890 comments

SeparateFly2361@reddit

I think that the framing of alcoholism as a binary is a problem. You’re either alcoholic or not an alcoholic. That leaves no room for nuance. There is a huge difference between a raging alcohol addict and a person who has 1-2 drinks most days as an express ticket to relaxation. I’m anxious, I’d probably need to be on an SSRI or something to take the edge off life if I didn’t have happy hour. What are we here for if not to enjoy ourselves?

SeparateFly2361@reddit

This might happen to me; I quit smoking without even trying to; I just don’t think I get physically addicted to things. But with alcohol, I like the taste but it’s more the instant relaxation and sense of well being. I’d probably still drink even if I thought it tasted bad

Do americans really live in dorms with shared bathrooms?

Posted by Odd_Town9700@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 358 comments

SeparateFly2361@reddit

The dorms with one huge bathroom for the whole floor are actually better I think, because they get cleaned by janitorial staff every day and there is always a toilet or shower available, you don’t have to wait for one of your roommates to be finished

How is this wrong?

SeparateFly2361@reddit

It’s in your best interest because you are the one most at risk if you get rear ended. The safest thing for you personally is to avoid getting sandwiched. Plus you owe it to the person in front of you to try and not rear end them
