My fiance could snore for England, I am a really light sleeper. At the beginning of our relationship, I put up with it. As time went on, I’d start telling him to roll on his side, but now he even snores on his side. There’s been elbows and all sorts. Sometimes I literally have to sleep in the spare room, because my hearing is so sensitive, I can even hear his watch ticking from the other side of the room. I actually slept in the spare room last night and could still hear him! I’ve recorded him so many times and he’s horrified each time 😂 Ear plugs don’t work for me at all 😩

Run! Am 6 years into the marriage and I cant remember when I lastly slept a full night with all his sirens. For context am a very light sensitive sleeper. Just a bit of advice from a snorer: making him feel 'horrified' about something he can't do anything about isn't a constructive way to deal with it. Same goes for 'elbows and all sorts'. We had a phase where my wife seemed to be hoping that regular guilt-trips would make me stop snoring, including always telling friends and family how awful my snoring was. Obviously it doesn't work, it just made the situation deteriorate. It was a pretty corrosive phase and ended with me having to be very open about what it's like to be made to feel like you're being a shitty person to your partner for something you didn't choose and have tried everything to improve (and yes, we tried everything).

Sorry, but not doing anything about it yourself and just expecting others to put up with it is incredibly selfish. It’s your responsibility to do something about it (be that go to bed after them, try different positions, find a separate room) just as much, actually even more, than it’s there’s. I understand there’s no miracle cure, and these remedies may not work, but to refuse to even try to stop it and expecting them to just put up with being sleep deprived so you can have a good sleep isn’t right. At least TRY whatever you can to fix YOUR issue.

Agree with this 100%. My ex would get so cross at me for snoring and regularly make me feel terrible for it because he wasn’t sleeping. At the time I was going for every test under the sun and trying every anti-snore gimmick I could find on Amazon. He didn’t make the situation better, just made me feel 10x more anxious about it. I’m single now and will avoid any situation where I have to sleep in the same room as someone, and at times when there’s not been another option, I’ve had panic attacks because of how upset I am about possibly snoring and ruining someone else’s nights sleep.

I snore incredibly badly (I keep the whole house up some nights) I tried a lot of anti snoring stuff and nothing really worked beside a cheap orthopaedic pillow, the reason I would snore is because I would often sleep right on the headboard with my chin tucked into my chest and with this pillow my head is now at a slightly backwards angle and I can’t lay how I used to, I don’t snore at all anymore.

Not who you asked, but I helped my husband and I lose weight by cooking lower calorie meals (Skinnytaste.com and her recipe books are now my go-to), we stopped buying takeaway weekly, stopped drinking alcohol except for special occasions, and got into running several times a week. I stopped buying high calorie snacks like biscuits/crackers and instead keep healthy choices always available (plain Greek yogurt, fruits, boiled eggs, veggie sticks and houmous, homemade popcorn etc.).

How would that even make them a dick? People can use whatever reasoning they like and it won't affect anyone else. But also having an underactive thyroid is a pretty common condition that does cause weight gain. This is because the thyroid gland, which produces hormones that regulate metabolism, is not producing enough hormones to properly manage the body's energy use. With a slower metabolism, the body may not burn calories as efficiently, leading to weight gain.

I stopped snoring badly when I started weight lifting. I actually put a little weight on in the process, but I've toned up significantly and the snoring has pretty much stopped except for if I've got a sinus infection or I'm drunk. I made a couple of minor adjustments to my diet. I reduced how much mayonnaise I was having, I love the stuff and could have it with just about every meal. But I've cut that back so I go through a bottle every 6 weeks or so rather than every week. And I don't keep crisps or biscuits in the house as part of the regular shop. If they're there I'll eat them so I only get them in occasionally as a treat. Other than that I've honestly not really adjusted my diet. If I did I'm sure I'd be able to lose a couple of stone. But the snoring has cleared up, and the other weight related issue (meralgia parasthetica) has reduced in severity and I've found that regular use of over specific weight machine means I don't experience any lingering mild symptoms. And on top of that a few old injuries like where I tore my rotator cuff during lock down no longer bother me at all. I didn't do any fancy program and I don't go crazy often - I do 2 sessions most weeks, each about an hour and a half to two hours. Just picked a few of the simple machines at first and used them everytime, steadily increasing the weight. About a year or so in I started to vary it up with some dumbell exercises because I felt a bit more comfortable with the whole thing but that point. But just the consistent 2 sessions most weeks, occasional week with 1 session, has made a huge difference to me. I know that if I buckled down and really dieted, and added another couple of gym sessions to my week I'd be able to end up fucking shredded. But...i don't care about that. I feel better about my body than I have in a very long time, I feel healthier than I have in a long time, and I haven't had to give up too many of my evenings or sacrifice too much of the stuff I love (food) to make it happen.

As for exercise, my husband has a 45 minute run in the evenings and I do the same amount of time on an exercise bike at home. We’re both in jobs where we’re both on our feet most of the time which helps too.

Separate beds is a lot more common than people realise, especially when you get into middle age. We don't tend to broadcast the fact as there are always people who take it as a sign your marriage must be failing or something, but when I've been open with friends about it I'd say at least half of them say they do the same, at least a few nights a week.

This is like mine. He's skinny AF, there's nothing up, he just snores. So he gets a lot of pokes in the ribs. The most annoying thing is when he then complains about being kept awake by the dog gently breathing. Every time he does that I threaten to record him in his sleep and play it back to him. I crept out and slept on the sofa for years, 4 kids so no spare bedroom free. Used to sleep under my dressing gowns and coats from the hall when it was cold. He’d be so angry in the morning, but at least I’d got some sleep. Once the kids got old enough and enough had left home, I got a spare room. The solution is mouth tape. We as humans should primarily be breathing through our nose. Tape his mouth at night and snoring goes away, or he stops breathing 😭

We both have fractured sinuses from years before we met and consequently we both snore like tractors. We also both can tell when there’s a storm brewing from the pressure change giving us a sore faces so that’s a fun time in our house. We’ve just learnt to live with it as we’re both as bad as each other when it comes to snoring. And occasionally I bring out the ear plugs. Just to clarify his happened about 10 years ago (long before I knew him) and mine was from flying off playground roundabout when I was about 6. Man playgrounds in the 90s were a lot more fun but so much less safe.

My partner snores even though he’s fitter than most men, but I’ve found some earplugs that dampen the noise enough that the urge to kill him in his sleep has disappeared. I’ve realised it’s something about the tone and pitch, if that’s even a thing with snoring, that made me want to voluntarily spend time in prison. My ex used to snore like a bulldozer, she was huge tho. And was likely developing sleep apnea if she continued. It was less the snoring and more the problems with her breathing, sometimes she'd just stop and be silent and it shit me up more. I would either go downstairs if it was really bad, most of the time rolling her onto her side fixed the issue, but she hated me for it. Imagine hating your b/f for making sure you dont stop breathing in your sleep. I used to snore when I was a bit fatter but since i dropped the weight none of my future ladies have complained about it, i found that conditions didnt help like A/C. You say you're on holiday is the room you're in packed with A/C and colder and dryer?

My wife snores, does a weird clicking noise, sleeps on her back with her knees up (which inevitably fall down), throws punches and kicks in her sleep... The whole lot. The solution is simple: we go to bed together, but as soon as she falls asleep, I go to the spare room and sleep there. We usually wake up roughly at the same time, so the first one awake joins the other one. Honestly, once you accept the idea of sleeping apart, you realise it's better for both of you and your couple. Now, when we travel and that's not an option, earplugs kinda do the trick.

I had a double uvula too! I snored from being a young kid. Both my parents were snorers. None of us were overweight as such back then. In my 40s I wasn't overweight either, still snoring badly. Window rattling ones. Had an ENT referral. One nostril blocked by deviated septum. Had that repaired, tonsils out and double uvula removed. Only a little better unfortunately, and bloody sore for ages. Still snoring now in my 60s, but overweight. Think my deviated septum returned. Husband sleeps with ear buds and listens to metal most nights. Neighbours probably would smother me if they could 😏

I experienced a surgery that involved removing the uvula, tonsils and more to help the sleep apnea as a "let's try this" as it will only feel like a bad sore throat for about a week (yes I was that trusting/stupid over 15 years ago). For those that are curious look into a 'UPPP' for sleep apnea with an unexpected outcome. Never again will I trust a surgeon nor will I agree to a procedure without first researching actual patient recovery experiences........it was more like a medieval act of torture. I wasn't overweight, but snore yes, stop breathing yes, talk in my sleep yes, and when asleep on my back my o2 sat levels would sink into the 70s giving some in hospital a fright.

This might not work for everyone, but I am a snorer and it started to bother my other half after we had our 1st child. I did some online browsing and read about nose strips and mouth taping. I hated the idea of it at first, but gave it a go. Now I sleep better and on the nights I use both the nose strip and mouth tape, no snoring at all. It's not for everyone and probably hasn't been scientifically backed, but works for me!

The usual process of antihistamines, nasal sprays, nasal strips, air purifier/ioniser in the bedroom, keep pets out or use a bread spread if they insist in sleeping in there. Then a sleep apnea assessment if no improvement. Then play white noise next to your ear, or a decent podcast to distract your brain from their noise.

I just wanna say I read this as panthers who snore - I thought I was reading a post in a cat group! But to answer about my PARTNER, he only snores when he is trying to watch TV and falls asleep and his neck is folded all weird because of how his pillow is. So I have no issue with poking him in the ribs until he gets up and gets into bed properly. It's me who snores badly. He's recorded me and I don't know how he copes. He says it's only when I'm really tired. I've had an apnea test but they only test for one night. I think they need to test for at least 3 or 4 personally to get true results.

I am the partner who snores. Short answer, we sleep in separate rooms. Long answer - we're both AuDHD, I've got sleep apnoea (with a cpap machine) and he's got insomnia. I need audiobooks or other quiet noise to help me sleep, have a nest of blankets and have no issues with things like the LEDs on power banks and devices. He needs complete silence and dark to sleep, no other movement in bed and even then he struggles. He's a human furnace and I'm coming into perimenopause, so I get hot flushes in the night. We have strongly conflicting sleep needs, so we've always had our own separate rooms.

Had been pleading my partner to get a sleep test. Seeing that I would rather sleep on a chair bed than with them got through. In the least shocking news ever sleep test showed severe sleep apnea. My husband isn’t overweight but has tiny nostrils, tiny ear holes, and he’s had his nose broken before. His snoring was absolutely abysmal but managed to get a surgery to trim the turbinates within his nose a little and correct his septum deviation and it’s like 70% better now. I do still have to prod him to turn on his side sometimes. Also helps that my absolute superpower is that I can close my eyes and fall asleep within about 30 seconds so generally I’m asleep first and it’s not an issue (or if he’s snoring aggressively I wake him up, then fall asleep myself before he starts up again…)

I then try and do a nana nap at 5pm as I know the snoring will start again at 9.30. The Mounjaro jab literally stopped my husband's sleep apnea in a week of his first jab. I shit you not He has always snored which I got used to the regular noise of it but weight, illness and sleeping on his back makes it worse and he's been choking and gargling in his sleep since a couple of years of us moving in together but would not get diagnosed. It would happen once ever fortnight at the start but almost every day the last couple of years despite us both trying to lose weight. I had ear plugs and would try and tire myself out going to bed late to try and sleep through it, only restoring to sleeping on the sofa when I really had to. He got really upset when I did that but, you know, he was oblivious to what he is like and I can't wake him half the time. We are hoping to buy our first home in the next couple of years and a priority was to have a spare room with a spare bed so it can be used rather than the sofa. But then we both managed to get onto Monjaro jabs and within a week his snoring has reduced by like 80% and the sleep apnea choking, stopping breathing and gargling has stopped completely. Even if we hadn't been losing weight this drug has been worth every penny just for that. But now they are going to increase the price and I am terrified of it messing with my sleep again not to mention my weight loss progress. To answer your question, ear plugs, make them aware of what they do to make it worse (like sleeping on back) and if they can , sleep separately/ away and maybe put on some background noise to dull it out.

Sleep headphones (from Amazon, they are a fabric headband and have soft earpads in them) with white noise playing through them from my phone via Bluetooth. Before that it was foam headphones and going to bed before him but sometimes the foam headphones caused my ears to be very irritated and sore, so I’d sleep in the spare room

So, my husband has gained some timber and his snoring has been horrendous. He bought a snore guard from Amazon and to be fair it’s working really well. I also have the aircon on so that drowns out what noise he does emit but by god it got to one point where I thought I was gonna get him ready for an accident that wasn’t his fault…… I also have some silicone mould in ear plugs as they are the comfiest I have ever used

I had soft palate surgery about 12 years ago. Was on the NHS and partly down to me getting regular throat infections. Doctor took one look at the back of my throat and said "wow, you must be one hell of a snorer". So all done on the NHS, they cut off my dangly bit (!) and then effectively burned all that soft tissue at the back of my throat which then turns into hardened scar tissue. It did massively reduce my snoring... for a while. But it did come back again. Who knows, maybe I'd be snoring much worse today if I hadn't had it done - but it definitely didn't go away altogether and has definitely got worse again over the years since. It was also perhaps the most unpleasant experience of my life, and for that reason even if it were feasible I wouldn't get it done again. I won't go into all the ways in which it's unpleasant, but you only get a local anaesthetic and trust me that was not a nice experience to be awake through.

My ex wife made the more the incredible noise when she snored, it went right through me, it ruined my sleep and made me physically ill. Of course we had separate rooms but I could still hear it. The biggest issue was she wouldn’t accept she had a problem and the problem was indeed mine and I should learn to deal with it. It set in motion a chain of events over the years that led me to give up and walk away last year. It’s partly to blame for my horrendous mental health. I would say that she was an extreme snorer but still, don’t think these things can’t cause serious issues.

Because there's fixes for it! Nasal sprays, nasal dilators, tape for the mouth (yes, really lmfao. It's skin safe so it doesn't hurt to take off like good old duct tape does haha). And frankly if you're sharing a room with someone unwilling to use such tools, sleeping in different rooms is generally the only choice remaining.

I was a groomsman and tried so hard to power through and made it to 9pm before I was literally falling asleep at the table. I apologised to my friend and his wife and explained, turns out the woman was a friend of hers, went on her hen doo and ruined that too, I called her The Snornado and now they all call her by that too.

If your friend’s snoring includes quiet pauses (apnoeas) between groups of snores, it’s a sign of their airway blocking, denying oxygen to the heart. Every time breathing ceases, the brain wakes the person and breathing starts again. This is incredibly disruptive to their sleep and can lead to severe heart problems. Encourage your friend to go to their GP and request a referral for a sleep study.

My ex snored so loudly and I wasn’t coping so he investigated getting a mouth guard. It’s some kind of special one that’s designed to hold your jaw in place or something? I don’t know the details but it fixed his snoring. I was lucky he wanted to fix it for his own sake too - you don’t get as good quality sleep if you’re snoring! It was expensive but definitely worth it

I sent mine to the doctor repeatedly until he got an ENT referral. Turns out he had *massive*, size 4+ tonsils which were causing obstructive sleep apnoea. He used his private healthcare at work and got them taken out. He still snores but he’s trying to lose weight and that’ll help. It was grim, though. I was absolutely miserable for over 2 years. I also listen to white noise on Spotify all night. If he wakes me up with his snoring he gets a sharp elbow in the ribs and the white noise gets turned up really loud. Usually stops him.

Nudging him, exhaustion and when I'm really struggling, headphones with either thunderstorms or music loud enough to drown him out. I can usually sleep to the thunderstorms but not the music so music nights I don't sleep at all, but at least I'm not getting frustrated and wound up. Recently, my 6yr old asked me if I'm tired because her Dad's snoring keeps me awake. She explained that she had woken in the night and couldnt get back to sleep so her brought her bears and pillow to our room so she could sleep with us, but his snoring was so bad she went back to her own bed 🤣

Mine had a snore guard - retainers for his top and bottom jaws that are hinged and hold his mouth in the right, non-snoring position. That didn't work, so I used Loop earplugs. They weren't enough (he's so loud, I need something that roadies in death metal gigs wear) so he sleeps in the spare room. It's the only way either of us get any sleep.

They actually do a surprisingly good job of masking the sound. Failing at that I just shove them until they roll off their back

I used to snore a lot when I was overweight. One of the mouthpiece devices worked well for me at the time. If you know your first aid, they essentially perform a gentle jaw thrust which opens your airway just enough to keep it clear.

Ear plugs and going to bed before them. They don’t snore particularly loudly (usually) so it tends not to wake me up, but will stop me from falling asleep. I know if they roll over, it’ll stop so I have three things I do in this order: 1. Pull the cover slightly down. They instinctively pull it back and roll over in the process 2. Rub their cheek gently. Again they turn their head without walking 3. Chin lift. Put my finger under their chin and push up. It either annoys them enough to move but not fully wake, or puts their head in a position with a clearer airway 4. When all of the above have failed, kick to the shin (only done it a few times) 5. Go and sleep on the couch 6. Smother them with a pillow (seriously contemplated it one night when they had a cold and I could hear them snoring from another room! 😝)

My wife regularly pushes me over to sleep on my side and not my back. Which is ok. Thing is. She also snores like a trooper but doesn't get it. She thinks its just me?! She insisted on getting a consultant to operate, despite another family member who was a GP and told her she was wasting her money.
