Adults who lost a parent young as a child, would you say you are ‘over it’ or does it still affect you?

Posted by Long_Wait_3078@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 196 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

I lost my Mum before my first birthday. A few decades later and I am an absolute mess emotionally from it. I grew up in the 90s and there was no support or counselling for this kind of thing so it was never dealt with. I’m trying to deal with it through support sessions now but I need some kind of grief specialist and I simply can’t afford that.

It was when I went, there was no indication of the kind of friendliness the north likes to pride itself on. Leeds, Blackpool and Middlesbrough among others had much more welcoming populations.

I've noticed Brits rarely ask about someone’s family background or heritage. Is this considered rude/nosy here?

Posted by Realisticopia@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 114 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

Generally speaking there is an air of ‘if they wanted me to know, they would bring it up’ but with the current social climate, it could also be construed along the lines of ‘so where are you *really* from?’ and that is not the kind of brush decent people want to be tarred with. The other angle is you as a person are more than the sum of your constituent parts. Your experiences and individual background will have shaped you into the person you are and if your background and heritage is a strong part of that, it will come up naturally.

If the job market is so bad, why is only 5% of the UK's population unemployed?

Posted by dumblyhigh@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 677 comments

Doesn’t that 5% exclude people in the gig economy and zero hours contracts? So plenty of people technically employed but not working or not working enough to properly get by who can’t get into something more stable.

He was convicted of doing something heinous and I cut contact immediately. We are a small group and it really hit us hard because we found out so much that we didn’t know was going on and he was supposed to be the adult of the group. Still not over it if I’m honest.

How many people would come to your funeral? (Oh, and Happy New Year!)

I don’t want any kind of funeral/celebration/gathering etc (my wife knows where I insist on being scattered and that cremation is optional) but if I did, four definites, one maybe - but more likely determined by their wish to be there out of support for my wife - and a few who may feel an obligation if invited but may find reasons to avoid the drive.

F1 doesn’t tend to get that much attention in wider circles because it’s seen as a playground for the rich instead of an out-and-out sport. That, and the conspicuous consumption of the whole process, knocks it down a tier or two in the national consciousness.

Is HGV driving worth it?

Posted by S4h1l_4l1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 58 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

There are some driving jobs that are absolutely perfect for someone with the right circumstances but there are loads more that are a pain in the arse. The lorry drivers I used to run had it easy: doing milk runs, electric pumptrucks, big tail lifts, no picking unless they fancied helping. Others love eating up the motorway miles overnight on long tramping runs. There are loads of tricky jobs for bad money too and new drivers often have to earn their spurs doing those before they will be seen as experienced enough for something better. If you *really* want to do it then you can sign up for an HGV bootcamp and get your training for free (different providers may add on medical costs etc) and you are guaranteed an interview at the end of it but don’t expect it to be any kind of an easy life.

What does “taking the piss” and “fuck all” mean?

Posted by Supreme1012@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 17 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

Context is very important when using ‘taking the piss’. It can be light-hearted teasing of someone (we were taking the piss out of Mike’s haircut) or it can be an expression of annoyance that someone has deliberately taken advantage of someone else or a situation (I expected the quote to come in a little high but that’s taking the piss). Fuck all means ‘nothing’ i.e. Colin did fuck all at work today.

How do you respond to the greeting “you alright”?

Posted by dot_zot@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 72 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

The point of the question is to acknowledge the other person but not start a proper conversation unless there is further context to do so. I tend to go with ‘not bad, you?’ because it’s non-committal but if they have something else they want to say, it doesn’t close the door on that.

I've received a 'Risk of Redundancy' letter. How can I save my job?

Posted by UniqueWithATwist@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 49 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

Start searching now. The chances of keeping the job are slim but you really don’t want to be behind the curve on finding your next job. I would advise you to be polite and professional during the redundancy process. It’s so tempting to tell them to stick their company up their arse etc but you are better served by securing some kind of payout and a positive reference. Get them to show you the reference as part of the process so you know what they will be telling new employers but if you act professionally, they are more likely to do it and be positive about you.

I am expecting to inherit a lot of admin and activity when it comes to house clearing but not much financially. You hear and read about people becoming more selfish since the pandemic. Why do you think this is?

Posted by Due_Fee3692@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 43 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

There is a type of person that will insist on their enjoyment of a moment being more important than anyone else’s so they will talk at the cinema, sing along loudly at a musical, demand people not get in their shot when instagramming a public place etc. That behaviour grows as people see others arguing for behaviour they had always been denied and once the seal has been broken, standards slip much more easily. If someone has fun by being loud and rambunctious then that is fine as long as they are somewhere conducive to it. Don’t make the entire restaurant a party to your conversation, don’t ruin the film or the play for others, don’t push in queues and don’t park with the white line down the middle of your car.

Why is everyone so negative here?

Posted by DoctorPoop888@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 99 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

Brits are often given to complaining so that is the foundation for it. Public discourse is polarised on everything these so nothing is alright or OK, it’s all the worst or best thing ever. Britain is good but arguably should be much better. Public services are strangled, inequality is rife, and too many people have not enough. Without getting political, the country needs certain areas to be rebuilt and winning a comparison with a war-torn third world country is not and should not be enough.

What are your thoughts on "men only" places?

Posted by Opposite-Scheme-8804@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 761 comments

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

Some men feel a lot of pressure to be a particular kind of partner/father/provider etc and struggle to take that mask off around other people. They may start to do this in time when surrounded by people with similar struggles so to put a woman in that group may undo that. It’s no slight on the woman as an individual, it’s more that she may become a symbol of what he has been conditioned to look after so his vulnerability would become harder to access.

How often is it actually against the rules to discuss salaries with colleagues?

RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit

At my old workplace it wasn’t a rule but it was strongly discouraged. They couldn’t officially punish anyone discussing salary with coworkers but if they found out someone was, there were soft ways of retaliating. Someone would be side-eyed by management, advised not to carry on, pushed to the fringes etc

This exact thing happened in my former company. The HR manager was trying to explain why people were unhappy about money and two directors (well respected people within the company, not ogres) were shocked that the salaries we were offering weren’t enough for a single person to rent a one bed flat and live alone. She spent about half an hour breaking down the expenses to two people who meant well but hadn’t lived pay cheque to pay cheque for decades (if ever). Salaries did not go up.

Posted by StifferThanABoner@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 51 comments

I have never bought a full ownership property but as far as I know, it’s the same. You are still doing everything you would do for a normal house but some solicitors claim to specialise is SO. I don’t know if that’s a thing but our solicitor was used to doing property work and took it in their stride. Get a good mortgage advisor first and they will be able to answer all this in detail better than I could. We wouldn’t even have attempted to do it without a mortgage advisor.

I steadfastly refuse to go back to bad toilet paper. When we were really struggling we had to get as cheap as possible without resorting to tracing paper and it was a bad time. We now tend to have quilted but at the very least it has to be a brand known for quality and preferably one we have had before. We buy in bulk on Amazon so each purchase covers a period of time way too long to live with an unhappy tea towel holder.
