At home, Ubuntu Server was standard. I just started with my first Debian server. It was buttery smooth like Ubuntu, so I will probably start using Debian.

linux actually have alot of software support for an OS with around 5% marketshare

The quirk is that the people who use the software have an amazing skill set that is used to make the software. It's an amazing self-feeding cycle that creates superb software. The same cannot be said of most hobbies or other things.

I don't remember what Linux I first used. It was sometime in the mid 1990s and I made a set of diskettes to install it on a Tandy computer. We were blown away. The first CD-ROM of a Linux distribution that I used was Slackware. Then later Redhat. Those were the days of Windows 95.
