I'm surprised that arch is too and mint second, I wouldn't have thought that
I use mint and it works great for me, I can't comment on any other distro, but I'm playing games, mmos, and otherwise, it's been my daily driver for about 4 months. For 90% of the games I play it's flawless. One game I had to do -dx11 as a startup argument as it's natively dx12 and throws a fit
I only log into windows to play league of legends sometimes with friends, lol
AliceCode@reddit
Oh, also, SteamOS is Arch based, so that might be where those numbers come from.
nlflint@reddit
From my view, SteamOS is counted separately from Arch: https://imgur.com/a/qqPcLDO
By the way, what are those "64-bit" and "0 64-bit" entries??? What is wrong with Steam hardware survey?
Turbulent_Intern_427@reddit
Cachy prolly bumping this numbers then?
Sarv_@reddit
Those entries are from computers that have scrubbed the distrobution info or didn't have any to begin with. While it can read the architecture of the pc, they have probably set
NAME=""orNAME=0in/etc/os-releaseto make their machine slightly more anonymous.nlflint@reddit
Hard to believe that 25% of all linux (on steam) is doing that. Could it be flatpak?
FeelThePoveR@reddit
Well I saw comments saying that the "0 64 bit" entry is actually CachyOS which would align somewhat with ProtonDB saying its above pure arch in usage.
I also saw somebody else saying that at least Fedora flatpak doesn't show up as fedora so I guess it's possible that the other category is flatpak + scrubbed distro names maybe?
gamas@reddit
It means that Valve aren't doing any processing of the data, they just report the data as is. These would be OS' that for whatever reason didn't report their name accurately in the steam hardware survey.
JackDostoevsky@reddit
legitimately surprised CachyOS doesn't even make the charts. it's number one on distrowatch at the moment
Sarv_@reddit
Distrowatch is not a good metric. Number one on there is just the number one visited distro on the site itself. It does not translate to actual installations on machines. Most people don't use distrowatch and it is trivial to bot it.
PuzzleheadedHead3754@reddit
But on distro watch i remeber. Cachyos is the most used os.
TheG0AT0fAllTime@reddit
As it should be. Distros are separated and this is by all means just another distro.
SirGlass@reddit
I wonder if CatchyOS is just being reported as Arch? However that doesn't explain why Manjaro is seperated
I am just surprised Manjaro has more users that CatchyOS , if you go to the linux support sub, if you want to game you have to use a "gaming" distro apparently
TripleSecretSquirrel@reddit
Ya, Steam Decks and anything running SteamOS will be in the Arch category.
gmes78@reddit
Wrong. Steam OS shows up as "SteamOS Holo 64 bit".
TheOneTrueTrench@reddit
I've been on only Linux, various distros, since 2021, and using Linux for various things since 2005 or so, it's a LOT easier to switch than it ever has been.
nlflint@reddit
Arch is just awesome. It starts as a super minimal, and you add packages to make it what you want: Server, gaming desktop, development machine, living room game console, etc... Pick from any boot loader, window manager, desktop environment, audio subsystem, etc... you choose and there are so many options.
No_Percentage_2@reddit
Picking packages and following wiki will lead you to a bootable system with graphical environment. To get an actually usable system you will need to do SO much more... Unless you're in for a learning experience it's much easier and in the end better to install endeavour or cachy [or anything else besides maybe manjaro] and not bother will all that initial setup. I used arch for 5-ish years and my systen was riddled with a lot of small bugs that I couldn't find a solution for and I was just working around them.
snail1132@reddit
Except for init system, for some reason? But Artix has that covered
Endless_Circle_Jerk@reddit
Maintaining a package manager and a package repository is quite difficult in the first place. Maintaining multiple init systems within a package repo and manager becomes even more difficult when they were not integrated into the design philosophy 10+ years ago.
RandomHero1992@reddit
Correct me if I am wrong (not looking at the source info) but the image shows that it is equal between people are using Mint and Arch. It's just that Mint is split up and Arch isn't, Mint is shown here to be equal to Arch across 22.3 and 22.3 at 0.34%.
japzone@reddit
I think part of it is that the group of people most likely to try to jump to Linux are those with the technical skills and confidence to tinker with their PCs. Computer nerds, enthusiasts, and the like. People like that are probably attracted to Arch as a tinker distro, and are interested in the bleeding edge, so are willing to gamble on the risks of living on the bleeding edge. They also are more likely to have recent and niche hardware that would benefit from the latest kernel and drivers that Arch provides by default.
Mint would then be more popular with the second group, those just tired of Windows, just want their existing PC to work, and want something safe and reliable. Most people looking for that will probably be recommended Mint by their tech friends on online posts.
That's how I interpret the numbers at least.
Living_Shirt8550@reddit
Its because steamos is arch base, so every steamos user will be counted as an arch user, afaik
gmes78@reddit
That is not correct. SteamOS shows up as "SteamOS Holo 64 bit".
AK56___@reddit
Then where is SteamOS Holo in the image ?
gmes78@reddit
If you filter specifically for Linux, you'll see it.
However, the stats are all kinds of messed up at the moment.
AK56___@reddit
If you see the details of Linux distros, they show it, but for the main display, like the image above, they most likely merged the stats of SteamOS with Arch.
SoonerOrHater@reddit
No, it's just wrong currently. SteamOS is about a quarter of Linux users. Arch base would be about half.
nlflint@reddit
Your theory doesn't add up either. SteamOS Holo is \~25% of linux. Then on the combined stats page, Linux makes up 5.33%. Therefore, SteamOS Holo should be 1.33% on the combined stats page, but it's nowhere to be found. The stats are really messed up.
OffsetXV@reddit
I'd imagine CachyOS, EndeavourOS, and similar might show up as Arch? Could be part of it.
StickyDirtyKeyboard@reddit
They're usually separate.

InfiniteSheepherder1@reddit
Arch does not have versions or report differently based on DE. Fedora GNOME and KDE are split up, Fedora users using the flatpak like I am also don't show up as Fedora.

YEAR OF LINUX GUYS!!
dswhite85@reddit
Come on be honest how many times have you said this?
Ok_Heart_6489@reddit
There was never nor will there be a loud "year of linux" it will be quiet wins like this one, I think we might be past the inital tipping point for linux adoption
Ryaniseplin@reddit
every year linux gets better, and brings in more people
Scout339v2@reddit
People that have no idea of logistics have been saying it since like, 2014 for some reason. In 2021 I estimated 2024-2026 :D
Oktokolo@reddit
Every year.
NUKL3AR_PAZTA47@reddit
The year of linux is never coming. People are not emmigrating from windows at rates high enough to do so.
But the takeover of linux? The decade of linux, where more and more people being switching, maybe not in a year, but across time? That is something I can believe in.
sje46@reddit
I reckon it'd be a win by default thing (again, very gradually over time).
People are not using PCs as much. I read a reddit thread the other day in which a shocking amount of people said they do not own a computer. They ONLY use phones. Adn as the internet is getting more and more mobile-friendly (and less desktop friendly), I don't see this reversing anytime soon.
Linux enthusiasts will always own computers. If 100% of the population owns a computer, and 2% of the population are linux enthusiasts, then 2% of the population runs Linux. If only 50% of the population owns a computer, then linux enthusiasts will have 4% of the market. And so on. Obviously we're not going to get to 100% linux based off that. Desktops aren't going away entirely. But I do think this could be a relatively large factor.
It's also helping significantly how much press Linux is getting in social media, particularly on youtube. Maybe it's just my algorithm. But I'm seeing a lot of videos with very popular youtubers talking about Linux. SomeOrdinaryGamers, LinusTechTips, fucking Pewdiepie. Many others. I do not think when I started running Linux in 2009 that a tenth of the people I went to college with would have even recognized the term "Linux". I'd be awfully surprised if that were still the case with people around age 20 today.
EconomistNo5807@reddit
Idk, the % of households which have a computer is at the highest in history......just we buy them less often due to slower progression of upgrades.
sje46@reddit
Is that global or just within the us ( or other developed country)?
EconomistNo5807@reddit
Both actually, 2025 was the highest ever for US by itself, and globally.
Ryaniseplin@reddit
its more the immigration from windows than it is the emigration to linux
and most people aint going out to buy a mac, to not be able to play anything
Scout339v2@reddit
As I continually state, YoLD is not mass adoption, it's mass recommendation. That's what drives adoption.
And every month more and more people are recommending it. So yes, the year of Linux isn't coming... Its here.
Negative-Squirrel81@reddit
People are being pushed into Linux (and Mac) to avoid Windows 11.
These are some weird times.
CuffytheFuzzyClown@reddit
Except they aren't. Statistics don't lie. People on reddit whine as usual yet people in general upgrade as usual. Windows remains the ridiculously dominant force, Apple is a joke and Linux gain is a rounding error.
And that's a shame. Microslop needs competition
Regular-Elephant-635@reddit
Although it's not yet like 30% of the market share, Linux is still gaining ground. And then you complain Microslop needs competition while completely ignoring constant improvement on Linux and calling the numbers a lie. Bro these are statistics from STEAM, and as you yourself said, they don't lie.
NUKL3AR_PAZTA47@reddit
The steam survey is kinda flawed in some ways. This number could be inaccurate. However, we came be almost certain that linux is growing significantly faster than before.
gamas@reddit
Anecdotally, I have encounter normies who have considered switching to Linux purely out of annoyance about "the AI crap". Main thing holding them back is largely the challenge of migrating and the learning curve (the state of Linux is better than it was 20 years ago in this front, but its still not quite "you can install it and never have to touch the terminal" levels).
Calm_Cattle3212@reddit
I think the year of Linux will come. That being the year or year after Windows 12 drops if its going to be just as big a downgrade as Windows 11 was.
ViciousQuintessence@reddit
It’s just a perfect storm right now. Linux had a massive glow-up recently, completely killing the old myths about broken games, lack of software, and needing a terminal just to open a browser. Valve is cooking with Proton, while Microsoft is actively speedrunning alienating their own userbase. People trying Linux today are actually sticking around. The "Year of the Linux Desktop" is just whenever we hit the critical mass that forces corps to finally care. I’m living proof: switched 3 months ago expecting it to be just okay, but I’m honestly blown away. Zero compromises on my games or daily apps.
sockman_but_real@reddit
The century of Linux
Blabla_bla12345@reddit
I suppose that will be every year from now on, right?
Red2005dragon@reddit
I went back and forth on Linux for almost all of 2025, using it on my laptop and distro hopping constantly. Back in October I finally decided on a proper trial by fire and said I'd switch my main Desktop to CachyOS for a full month, even if I ended up hating the experience a week in I would stick it out and give it a full honest try.
The deadline has passed by several times at this point and I am still on CachyOS. It is frankly effortless and I've had only the most minimal of problems. Games just work, alternatives for pretty much every software I might have missed are present, and I've never had to deal with random updates breaking anything important.
KCGD_r@reddit
For context: Linux broke 1% in 2021 and 3% in 2025
Tuomas90@reddit
Those are the really important numbers people like to forget when showing stats like this or when they say:"Uh, Linux is just 4% marketshare."
TRIPLING your userbase in 4 years is NUTS!
And then doubling it within another year? Wow!
The question is: How will this continue, once everyone has finished switching from Windows?
The next 2 years are going to be very interesting.
94746382926@reddit
Man I really hope so. I would imagine around 10-15% marketshare is a turning point where companies will no longer be able to justify ignoring linux and have to start tailoring anti-cheat to support it.
ShrimpHeavenNow@reddit
At this rate, 247% of PCs will be running Linux in 2510!

Urielp09@reddit
Currently making the transition myself since I got tired of microslop call of shitty
TheOgGhadTurner@reddit
I am currently in the process of switching because of all the legislation coming for operating systems. As an open source software Linux doesn’t have to comply.
semmu@reddit
its not clear yet how linux distros will handle (and will HAVE to handle) this whole new legislation, so its misleading to say they dont have to comply.
Xambassadors@reddit
its open source, someone will just fork a version without that BS
TheOgGhadTurner@reddit
In all reality they’re not required to. They can just as easily put a disclaimer that states the OS is illegal in the states with this legislation in place…
Where as windows and macOS will have to comply as a large number of their customers and huge enterprises that rely on those systems are based in California and other places with this legislation if windows tried that California would come to a full stop.
With Linux there’s a handful of people being shoved out or forced to comply and it doesn’t really hurt the bottom line as much as say 5-6 million users and hundreds of thousands of businesses in those states.
And even the legislation isn’t sure how to handle Linux. So it’s kind of up in the air. I think you’ll see the big name distros half heart an attempt at complying. But I think more likely you’ll start to see disclaimers similar to prop 65 plastered on every distro.
semmu@reddit
we will see, but at the same time im afraid this will be just the first step leading down a very-very bad path.
TheOgGhadTurner@reddit
Nothing but data stealing cunts they are.
TheOgGhadTurner@reddit
Oh I completely agree which is why I’ve given up On closed sourced operating systems. Open source is community driven and the chances of them going after every fork is slim to none because that would be expensive
ostekages@reddit
Yeah but they do seem be on the path. Systemd added birth date to the account creation recently (I can't remember the exact details, but seem Linux distributions are not entirely unaffected by these regulations)
SoonerOrHater@reddit
The survey had to be corrected a couple months ago. The distro data is obviously wrong currently; a large portion is attributed to "0" and "0 64 bit". Probably should wait for that to be corrected before trusting the massive increase in Linux users.
TimChr78@reddit
The increase is absurd because the February showed a 1.15 percentage point decrease in share - which obviously wasn’t correct.
You math doesn’t math since you forgot “other”.
SoonerOrHater@reddit
The decline was correct; it just depicted the known change in their user base during Chinese New Year. It would still be a massive increase without that dip.
I didn't forget other. If you can't follow basic arithmetic, I can't help you.
GolemancerVekk@reddit
Please keep in mind it's not "Linux" at 5.33%, it's 5.33% of Steam users, who are a subset of gamers in general and a small subset of all desktop users.
AfraidAsparagus6644@reddit
This. Someone who uses Steam is more likely to be a power user, to be a part of internet culture, etc. all things that increase their chances to use Linux
Due-Memory-6957@reddit
If anything, gamers are more likely to just use Windows.
Zamundaaa@reddit
General Linux use (as judged by web trackers) is higher than on Steam.
AfraidAsparagus6644@reddit
Wow, I didn't know! Cool
Sleepyjo2@reddit
It’s also not 5.33% of Steam users.
It’s the subset of randomly selected Steam users. It varies between surveys by more than the margin of error of your average survey sometimes.
CreativeGPX@reddit
An article I read yesterday linked the large increase in proportion on Linux users to a large decrease in the proportion of Chinese language users and some sort of correction Valve is doing with respect to the Chinese market.
hypotensor@reddit
It doesn't add up if you include Steam Deck stats either. Definitely something wrong with the way they're showing the data.
w2qw@reddit
If you filter by Linux Steam OS is shown separately
hypotensor@reddit
no shit how do you think i got the data
funforgiven@reddit
That is because SteamOS and Arch bundled together here but not in the Linux only list.
pythonic_dude@reddit
Because it doesn't include 25.64% of "other" in linux breakdown, you need to select to showing linux-only to see all the entries (same with Mac and win, but they don't have this degree of fragmentation so it's not as apparent).
OrangeKefir@reddit
I come to r/linux and am happy to see others have noticed this. Yep the data looks a bit sketchy.
On r/pcmasterrace I didn't see this mentioned at all. On r/linux_gaming I think one person mentioned it but it's waaay down. They're all "woop woop 5% to the moon" etc without checking :/
amogusdevilman@reddit
its about 1 in 19, pretty decent compared to MACs 1 in 42 or Win7's 1 in 1250
Samiassa@reddit
It also inline with the porn survey. I think while a lot of people use widows or macOS for work uses, a lot of people are going with Linux for personal use. which is why they’ll always be high even if everyone stopped using them for personal use. Honestly since pc building is at a pretty massive low right now I didn’t expect people to swap to Linux as much, since I assumed it would grow with fresh installs more than it would with people actually uninstalling windows or dual booting.
Due-Memory-6957@reddit
If anything, it makes more sense for people to swap to Linux if they can't build a new machine since it's a way more efficient system and will allow you get more for your buck.
berryer@reddit
on the other hand - Windows 10 EOL + the whole TPM thing. Linux won't complain at all if you lack a TPM. There haven't been any huge unpatched CVEs that I'm aware of to light a fire under anybody, but a good chunk of folks will make the switch if they're not looking to but a new system right now.
Samiassa@reddit
That’s actually a great point, I imagine a lot of people didn’t want to upgrade and had their annoying Linux friend go “well you know if you installed Linux you can use that old hardware!” (It’s me I’m that annoying Linux friend)

I upgraded my parents to Fedora 41 on my dad's old laptop.
(From 1000 miles away, I might add)
A couple months later, my mom called me to switch her WORKING brand new framework 17 to Fedora, because she just preferred using my dad's 8 year old Intel 7000 i3 craptop.
They're all on ZFS, and they backup to my server hourly, which was a good thing when my dad's craptop had a lithium related problem when I visited them a year later.
I used zfs send to restore his image to a spare surface laptop I had with me, had my mom order a new framework, and restored it from the temp laptop to his new one.
They got to see his installation jump between 3 different computers in 4 days with zero complications.
All of their computers are on Linux now. And my favorite part is I end up helping them with their computer issues like 4 times less.
Linux is ready for your 70 year old parents/grandparents.
hobo_stew@reddit
I'd expect that to be the easiest demographic to be ready for, after programmers. After all, most 70 year olds only do basic spreadsheets, light web browsing and e-mail. maybe streaming.
tagsb@reddit
You'd think that, but in my experience that hasn't been the case. Although their use cases mean they'll never NEED something other than Windows, their understanding of how to use computers is prescriptive.
Nothing can change or move around on the UI because they fundamentally don't understand what they're doing on a computer - they just have a series of steps memorized to do their favorite things.
Brillegeit@reddit
In my opinion that's a Linux advantage, at least if you stick with Ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a brand new laptop for my mother during Christmas 2013, her first computer. That installation is still what she use, I do a
do-release-upgradeevery four years, and I've since cloned the spinning drive to an SSD and replaced the cheap Acer Celeron laptop with a faster (used) Thinkpad 420s, but the OS installation has been the same for 12 years. What has happened with the GUI? A new animal on the wallpaper every four years.
If you do a google image search for "ubuntu 12.04", then 16.04, 20.04, 24.04, you'll see the changes are basically non-existent.
Then do a search for "windows vista", "7", "8", "10", "11", and the changes are much larger. Another problem is that Windows spawns popups every few months trying to sell you things, ask stupidly technical questions, install different generations of AI tools, revert to using their applications, re-install candy crush, move or replace shortcuts.
Her partner uses Windows and he calls me about twice a years about changes on his computer that he needs to either adjust to or revert. A normal case is that Edge is suddenly the default browser and he can't find his shortcuts which are in Chrome. Another is that after removing the Edge shortcut from the pinned taskbar, it restores itself and looks almost identical to Chrome resulting in the same confusion. Microsoft recently changed their photo viewer from Photo Viewer to Photos which is a completely different application with completely different interface. Windows Defender and Office also often ask completely irrelevant and way too complicated questions that confuses him, which trains him to just click "OK" on all popups. A recent call I got a month ago was that all his images were gone. After a few minutes we figured out that he had to right click the desktop and click "show desktop icons". Not sure if that was caused by him being fat fingered or Microsoft deciding it should be in that setting, but it's an insane setting to have that available.
My mother on the other hand has had two technical problems in 12 years, both solved by rebooting the network printer.
The only technical issue I had was integrating with the Google environment, so I bought an Insync license for $40 (I think I got it at a discount) that has solved that problem so far.

I feel like the macbook Neo is a better fit.

Linux is kind of doing the same thing -- for example, RedHat 10 drops support for x86-64-v2 and earlier, so it wants cpus from 2018+.
Of course, I say kind of because this is just RedHat (and its downsteam distros), and AlmaLinux is adding the support back as an alternate architecture.
This fire is probably already lit for some enterprises, but shouldn't have too much impact outside of that -- but it's coming, and eventually people with older cpus may find themselves limited to specific distros even though their computer is still very capable.
AbbreviationsWide331@reddit
That is exactly what happened to me and my parents. We both didn't want to throw away perfectly fine hardware.

I have effectively jumped ship as well now. I've been trying Linux gaming every couple years, and while it's been much improved for the last few years, it was too much tinkering and pain, especially with Nvidia cards. This is now... gone. It's finally at the point where the vast majority of cases "just works", if you don't necessarily need to be playing on launch. And even major breakage like Crimson Desert worked like what, one week afterwards?
I still have a Windows installation, but at this point it's solely for Rocksmith (I'm not dealing with the already hacky RS_Asio setup with the added complexity of Wine/Proton), and as a fallback should something really just not work on Linux. Haven't needed that in months though.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
If you have an audio interface, a mod lets you use that and probably avoid the whole rs_asio thing altogether. Because a lot of interfaces are native.
iKnitYogurt@reddit
Which mod would that be? Because rs_asio is a mod that lets you use an audio interface directly in Rocksmith, but it wasn't exactly straightforward to get working. If there's something easier, I'll gladly try it - whether it enables me to dump windows completely, or just simplified the setup I got going there.

Don't get your hopes up. Something seems to be wrong there, the second most used distribution is one that didn't exist before and is ~18% now with the legit looking name "0 64 bit". So I'd wait for next month to see what really happened
Cuffuf@reddit
I want them to be big enough for companies not to ignore but small enough for bad actors to still not see it as worth it given a theoretical higher level of technical knowledge.
So like ~10% would be awesome.
Ab4739ejfriend749205@reddit
Year of Linux...been waiting for that to happen.
Even when free...people are not rushing out to get it.
JoaoPFSimoes@reddit
Remember that it is a random survey.
We have to look at it from a multiple-month window.
For example, 2 months ago, it was reported to be higher than last month.
This month, even without growth, it would be probabilistically higher than last.
Anyway, looking at the growth curve, if we remove the variations/outliers, it is accelerating as expected, and I'm excited!
Witless-One@reddit
This is insane! I'm part of that number :D
I recently switched to Linux Mint, and I've got to say, I haven't thought about booting up Windows since. I've tried Linux over the years, but I've always switched back because there were always slight annoyances. I usually used Ubuntu, so not sure if Mint just works better than Ubuntu or if the Linux ecosystem has matured in general. Either way, I'm super happy.
Only thing I'm hoping for is anti-cheat to work on Linux for iRacing (which I want to get back into). Apparently it should be easy to add but the developers haven't prioritized it or something. So hopefully this boost will provide them some incentive!
Horseshoetheoryreal@reddit
5% impressive, but any specific reason Manjaro has higher than CachyOS?
deathschemist@reddit
makes sense, manjaro is considerably older than cachyOS.
Cachy will most likely overtake it at some point in the near future though
Zekiz4ever@reddit
It overtook it last month already. There just is some kinda issue because some distros are grouped together as 0 64bit and 64bit
sharkstax@reddit
Do you seriously think that CachyOS has more gaming users than Manjaro, which has been around for a lot longer?
Zekiz4ever@reddit
It was on 9% last month, so there probably was some kinda issue with inputing the distros
SirGlass@reddit
On lots of forms I hear everyone talking about Catchy , its sort of bothers me because the narritive is "If you want to game you have to use a gaming distro like catchy"
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Cachyos isn't a gaming distro, they don't even have anything gaming related by default. They have a button to install gaming packages and have their own proton fork, but they're not a gaming distro, they're even working on a server version.
But it's objectively better for gaming than, say, Ubuntu or Mint as it has more up to date packages which means newer drivers and bug fixes sooner. The performance between Ubuntu and fedora (also more up to date) makes it clear (I saw a bar graph in Jakkuh's video "I'm uninstalling Windows.")
flucayan@reddit
Meme flavor of the day distros infiltrating blogs/media got newcomers lost
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Lol, cachyos has been around for years before everyone was talking about it.
Xirael@reddit
Honestly. Seeing people talk about switching and then deciding against it because they were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choices is disheartening.
xaitv@reddit
I usually just tell people to look at screenshots of the top 5 distros, minus Arch, on Steam(and yes, I know how senseless that seems for more veteran Linux users) and base their choice on that. Or if they can't choose just go with Cachy since more (recent) users = more answers to questions you might have. It's unlikely their choice is gonna matter too much for their first distro as long as they don't pick some super niche distro they can't find any support for.
I think out of all the people that came to me asking almost 100% of them ended up going with Cachy, one went with Manjaro cause that just happens to be what's still installed on my PC.
dantheflyingman@reddit
I tell people people they all come with live distros. Get Ventoy, plop a bunch of distros on it and see which one clicks. It is like tasting different flavors in an ice cream store.
Moaradin@reddit
Considering where it was at last month, it probably did and still does have more users than Manjaro
https://web.archive.org/web/20260313104444/https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/?platform=linux
It's most likely grouped under "0 64 bit" this month and steam didn't correctly identify it for some reason
SoonerOrHater@reddit
It definitely does. CachyOS was around 9% the last couple months and has been one of the fastest growing distros in the survey.
KeyPanda5385@reddit
Manjaro is best cachy os numbers coming from distrohoppers lol

pyrojoe42@reddit
I think I can translate for you.
Manjaro is the best! CachyOS' numbers are coming from distrohoppers. This makes me laugh in an audible manner. You're Welcome!
Horseshoetheoryreal@reddit
Possibly, than again was surprised because of bigger community in reddit r/cachyos/ comparison r/ManjaroLinux/ obviously that has nothing to do steam counts.
NOT_EVEN_THAT_GUY@reddit
honestly terrifying
I wouldn't trust the manjaro devs with a toaster
Indolent_Bard@reddit
The devs are fine, it's the management that's the problem, that's why they're taking over with a fork. The ones who actually do all the work can finally focus on it now.
xaitv@reddit
Eh, I've ran Manjaro for like 4 years now without issues. Would I try another OS like Cachy if I reinstalled or built a new pc? Sure. Am I gonna do it just randomly? Nah.
dalminator@reddit
eh they have made mistakes but when they aren't breaking your system it works incredibly well with little need to fuss. I do run cachyos these days because I like some aspects better, but manjaro was a great os for me for several years and I only had one instance of them breaking my PC with bad update controls. I've honestly had a way worse experience over similar timeframes with windows systems and definitely with other Linux distributions as well. none of these systems are perfect.
toolschism@reddit
I'll always have a soft spot for Manjaro because it was the first distro that actually got me to stick with Linux as a full time driver on a laptop for more than a week. Ended up using it for probably 6 or 7 months full time and loved it. Eventually moved to arch on the laptop, and then finally fedora on my gaming desktop and haven't touched windows since.
Safe-Average-1696@reddit
You see the real hype on CachyOs now?
Every web articles (look at xda for example or even on reddit) is talking about it to make views because of the hype, but not a lot of people really use it.
Helmic@reddit
CachyOS was like the third or fourth msot popular distro in these surveys not that long ago and Manjaro was much more marginal. I think there's just some straight up errors. Which unfortunately might mean the 5% figure itself isn't accurate, even if I expect the overall percentage is still growing.
gamas@reddit
I feel like people really seem to struggle with the idea that these surveys cannot be individually taken as gospel.
Valve surveys a random selection of users each month and their sampling method is clearly not doing any poll-like weighting to create an accurate extrapolation. That means that of course you're going to get wild swings each month because they're asking completely different people each month.
surtic86@reddit
Manjaro is older so bigger userbase overall i would say.
itastesok@reddit
More users submitted data using Manjaro than CachyOS.
shwaamon@reddit
Yeah that's probably why Fedora isn't on the list.
Afillatedcarbon@reddit
I don't see NixOS either. Seems like steam recognises different linux distros now though.
Smasher3825@reddit
This is the first time I got the hardware request as a Fedora user.
toolschism@reddit
I think I've only gotten 1 since I switched to Fedora back in August.
I am surprised a bit that fedora isn't higher on the list considering it seems like Cachy, Bazzite, Fedora, and Arch are the ones I always see on protondb.
AnEagleisnotme@reddit
Every spin of fedora shows up as a seperate distribution, fedora GNOME and KDE showed up for a bit maybe 6 months ago
Wreck_OfThe_Hesperus@reddit
I've been gaming on steam since it was green-coloured and I've never gotten whatever it is you guys are getting.
elkaki123@reddit
Didn't get a request myself :(
TheG0AT0fAllTime@reddit
Don't feel bad. If we all got one the results would be wrong.
thepaleman3492@reddit
I figured alot of people would be on bazzite
Kit_EA@reddit
No, Steam just didn't correctly identified CachyOS for some reason.
It's under 0 64 bit for some reason.
Horseshoetheoryreal@reddit
Fair enough
SoonerOrHater@reddit
The survey is broken again. I think someone has to manually input or correct the distro data every month. In recent months CachyOS was around 9%.
RoyalSquarious@reddit
Is it….? The year…..?
jcelerier@reddit
5% of the steam user base is more than the population of many countries
Zekiz4ever@reddit
Eh, it's estimated that steam has about 150 million MAU. So It's about 7 million active Linux users. Not insignificant, but also not thaaat much. It certainly can't be ignored anymore
AdventurousEast7456@reddit
I don't think there will be just one year for Linux. We'll just all be using Linux on the desktop before we know it. Everyone's Linux year will be their own.
RoyalSquarious@reddit
Yeah, sure. But I don’t think that’s what most people mean when they talk about the year of Linux. They just mean the year when it has its inevitable exponential growth.
Scout339v2@reddit

Every year is the year of the Linux desktop. I play on Gentoo, btw.
Scheeseman99@reddit
If not the year, I think we're in the era.
Theunknownkadath@reddit
This is cool and all but is it because of SteamOS? Also, i have the unpopular opinion that Linux doesn't need to be "for everyone" and spread around. It should be for those that use it.
MiserableMeeting3429@reddit
I'm one of those 0.15 people on Linux mint, happy to help
RazerPSN@reddit
I love Mint, but is it not a not optimal distro for gaming? I'm talking about it having more stable but older packages
MiserableMeeting3429@reddit
You can run a dual boot with mint and bazzite or any other gaming focus os if you have the time
techkidwhiz@reddit
That is just a waste of time. Maintaining 2 operating systems when they are so close to the same? Just get a distro that is a mix of both.
Majestic_Bath9693@reddit
What do you mean optimal for gaming? We can opt for more recent kernels and anything else a “gaming distro” does will net you 5-10 fps at the high end.
Anything game changing will just be put into the kernel
ragenuggeto7@reddit
Mint is built for stability which means its not updated oftain. That can be an issue for gaming since drivers are updated regularly.
So you can game on it, but it'll likely require more work vs a gaming distro like bazzite.
SilentHillJames@reddit

Clanceeinfinity@reddit
i switched too!
DietUnagi@reddit
Why doesn’t this include fedora universal blue os? There’s a crap load of gamers that use it, the gaming distro that is a SteamOS clone is almost like SteamOS but doesn’t use arch Linux and can be dual booted for other os’s or Linux distros. I know SteamOS is based on arch and so is cachyos.
But bazzite puts a lot of apps in containers like qubes-os
TechnologyEither@reddit
Does this figure include steam OS?
Large_Assignment_957@reddit
At this point, unless you're trying to play games with kernel level anticheat, it almost seems stupid not to switch. You almost need 32gb of ram to play a lot of games on windows with it sucking 8gb on idle. With ram prices the way they are you can save a ridiculous amount of money going with 16gb on linux.
15015015@reddit
I’m just slightly miffed that Fedora is split into different desktops for no good reason because it always appears underrepresented in these charts.
CriesOverKarma@reddit
If it makes you feel better I switched from windows to Fedora KDE yesterday and I'm never going back
WeLoveNazunaHere@reddit
I was thinking the same thing; anecdotally everyone I know uses Fedora as their gaming distro so when I see it not represented as a clear line I am always confused.
dogman_35@reddit
I use Nobara, which is still basically 95% Fedora
I really think Fedora based stuff is the best for a general purpose distro
ZCTMO@reddit
I only imagine the number continues to grow over the near future, especially with all the OS oriented news lately.
AtomicTaco13@reddit
It's both thanks to Wine and Proton constantly improving, as well as Microslop shooting itself in the foot
Nabugu@reddit
yep, nowadays i just open Steam and play, i don't even think about Proton, or only for 10 yo games, all the news ones, it works out of the box
AtomicTaco13@reddit
It depends for me. I usually just default to GE-Proton since some games still get prissy with Valve's
ManinaPanina@reddit
We need to see more Tumbleweed KDE in that list.
Then_Educator8333@reddit
i have notices across all platforms many thing changed by around 15% so i think its likely a bot ban wave looking at specs like hard drive space suddenly changing so much
PenaltyGreedy6737@reddit
I have never had a good experience with games on Linux. Even native games run worse than on Windows.
Much_Dealer8865@reddit
Same, I really like Linux especially my fancy dancy hyprland rice but gaming is not that great. Besides ray tracing performance being terrible I get a lot of compatibility problems that have to be fixed although probably a good chunk of that is related to stupid hyprland. Love it and hate it.
SensuousChocolate@reddit
Yeah. It’s true but Linux users will never admit it because they like to cope. They’ll cherry pick 2-3 games to show that it’s running 1fps faster than Windows.
Own_Nail_2999@reddit
Still not enough for corporations to care
ChrizzyDT@reddit

SelfHostedGuides@reddit
the Windows 10 EOL push has definitely been a factor. a few people in my homelab community switched to Linux just to avoid upgrading hardware that otherwise works perfectly. but what surprised me is how many of them ended up staying on Linux even after buying newer machines. once you go through the setup process once and realize Steam Proton handles most of the game library you actually care about, there's not much pulling you back. the bar for staying on Linux is way lower than it used to be.

Nobara user here. I used to use Windows, but one of the games I was playing kept experiencing weird errors and crashing. One day I finally had enough of that and installed Nobara. My entire system has run so smoothly ever since that I'm mad at myself for putting up with Windows for so long.

Tricky_Professor_654@reddit
thank Linus! (both of them)
Ryaniseplin@reddit
ok so i hate to burst this bubble, but i think valve needs a bigger sample size for these
these numbers jump around massively month to month
although even a 4% real linux userbase would be monumental, and a massive vibe shift in the pc gaming space
like last month linux and windows 11 lost users to windows 10, and now those users split back into linux and 11, favoring linux this time
DopeBoogie@reddit
I suspect a lot of Windows 10 users are having to make hard choices now that the 2011 Microsoft Secure Boot certificates are about to expire and they will only be officially updating them for Windows 11 users.
If you do not get the updated certs before they expire you cannot get them at all (in order to be securely enrolled they have to be signed by the existing certs, before those expire) and your system will be vulnerable going forward to any bootloader exploits because it cannot be patched against them.
Linux users don't have this issue with Secure Boot as we typically implement our own Certificate Authority and sign bootloaders with our own unique certificates.
I personally think it was not super smart for Microsoft to have waited until February this year to start patching this issue on affected systems (anything manufactured before approximately 2024, depending on when the manufacturers implemented the change) but what do I know
Ryaniseplin@reddit
yes but the month prior to that w11 gained a massive amount of users, from windows 10, so unless people were flip flopping between the two, i think its a variance issue
SensuousChocolate@reddit
Be careful. Linux evangelists don’t like to listen to facts.
Ryaniseplin@reddit
im actually being fairly generous to linux here
obviously LTT, and microslop had something to do with this, more and more are feeling disenfranchised with w11 and LTT posts a video showing an escape path
but i feel linux is at the state where it might actually keep alot of these people
id say 4% is fairly reasonable after the hype dies down is perfectly reasonable, but i feel this month and possibly next month are gonna be statistical anomalies
i feel this is more reasonable than a sudden vibes shift
althought with the release of the steam machine on the horizon it could be a vibe shift
RandomOnlinePerson99@reddit

Add me to the list. I finally moved my gaming rig's primary OS to Linux last night.
I've dabbled in Linux with VMs, WSL, Steam Deck and with my work laptop. I have been ready to move, but Windows compatibility kept me around despite its shithousery.
Then it started stuttering on basic games last week for no reason. Then it completely froze minutes after a very important meeting ended, which pushed me over the edge. As I was preparing to clone and migrate and questioning if I should, a start bar search resulted in Edge opening a link I didn't need. And then it asked me to turn on AI in Edge.
A few hours later, I'm running at cooler temps, less ram and CPU usage, and overall way snappier performance on desktop and gaming. I'm so happy I bit the bullet.
GrouchyCranberry8982@reddit
Same. Got mad at windows, created a partition to try Linux on my hardware, found it pretty immediately superior and 'lost' my windows partition on purpose.
CrazyAsian@reddit
The only problem is that one of my favorite games is teamfight tactics, and I can't play that on Linux due to vanguard. Waydroid seems to have some issues with Nvidia gpus, so it's not a great option either.
So instead, I shrunk down my windows drive to about .5 tb, cloned it to a cheaper SATA SSD I have laying around in the machine, and have it as a backup for the occasional time I want to play. But I'm finding myself not wanting to go to Windows anymore. So maybe I'll just give up on TFT.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Eventually they won't be able to ignore us. Even EA is trying to get anti-cheat to work on Linux, which somehow seemed a lot more unlikely than Riot Games.
manbeezis@reddit
Its the snappiness of the desktop for me. Switched from w10 to Bazzite a couple weeks ago and it feels soooo good at 180hz. All I do with my PC is play CS2 and browse memes, I have no idea why I waited so long to switch.
doyoueverfeel@reddit

Keyhunter2009@reddit

INITMalcanis@reddit
People who installed it, and it works, and they're not in a hurry to change it?
TampaPowers@reddit
I haven't seen one of these pop up in a long time, does that only trigger when you sign in from a different platform or hardware changes?
Gaming has a lot of people behind it, pushing it, but for anything else it's such a wasteland that it is frustrating to read docs telling you you are SOL when it comes to any productivity. Equivalents are one thing, but a tool that is mostly the same, but different in key points is still going to cause friction.
grady_vuckovic@reddit
I remember in 2019 celebrating windows like +0.03% and I remember folks laughing at me and saying, 'Yeah at this rate we might reach 5% by 2100'.
And at the time I kept saying (summarising), 'It doesn't matter how slow the rate of increase is, because as long as the rate of increase is positive, as long as we're trending upwards, we're winning. Because every additional person who switches to Linux means there will be more demand for developers to support Linux. Every additional bit of support means it's easier for someone else to switch to Linux. This isn't a sprint, it's a marathon, as long as we're inching up higher we're winning. Because right now lots of things are holding back Linux and most of them are related to low market share. So if we can be gaining marketshare while down at 0.75% marketshare, imagine how much easier it will be to gain marketshare when we're up at like 3%? We just have to get past the point of having extremely low marketshare and then it'll be easy to make big gains.'.
Here we are years later, the marketshare has more than doubled and launched up to 5.3% in just a few months.
Feeling vindicated right now, not gonna lie.
aoeudhtns@reddit
I bought Slay the Spire 2 and noticed it was native Linux, not running through Proton. And I see there's a few games doing this, and that game engines are adding Linux targets.
That makes me happy. I know when Proton came out, there was worry that Linux would never get support with Proton as an option. But way back when, even Macs got Mac-only games when they had 5% of the PC market. We'll see how the trends go but things are looking very positive for Linux.
--aethel@reddit
I’d guess that that’s a byproduct of STS2 switching to Godot,
I have to imagine the users supporting the FOSS engine care a little more about making sure native Linux builds run better than the commercial engines who don’t have financial incentive to do so
floghdraki@reddit
140% growth in one month? Yeah sorry but I don't buy this. I bet this will be corrected next month at the latest.
dogman_35@reddit
Or it's the previous survey that was incorrect? Given we know it was at 3.5% before?
dRaidon@reddit
I wonder if it's a steady growth or a critical mass thing. Like it reach 10% and then explode?
dogman_35@reddit
I think 10% is kinda where we're heading, and also where it'll cap out.
More than Mac because it doesn't have hardware restrictions, still niche because only people really into PCs will use it, but a solid userbase because it's generally just good. And the easiest it's ever been to just install and run out of the box.
Hovering around that number is more than enough to make most companies bother with a port. Affinity suite is likely going to get a native port, for example, given they already talked about it.
Most games probably won't, but that's just because Proton negates the need for it. There's virtually no overhead, and games just play as is without many serious proton-specific issues. We might see more open anticheat though, or attempts to get anticheat working under Linux though.
HappyHuman924@reddit
Doubt it, but we don't really need 100%. We just need "too big for developers to ignore", whatever number that is. :)
Fazaman@reddit

Willing-Actuator-509@reddit
With gaming on linux not being close to the maturity level of this of windows, 5% is incredible. I'm 100% sure there's another 5% of developers and other professionals that they don't even have a steam account.
Not_a_question-@reddit
I'm interested in trying this, if anyone wants to help I have two questions:

krabs91@reddit
Visual studio yes, MS office maybe in a VW or if you use office 365
Take it with a grain of salt, I’m kind of a noob
Not_a_question-@reddit
Great, I'll try fedora this weekend, thank you!
I couldn't figure out by googling what a VW is, but I'll figure it out later
Tuomas90@reddit
From what I've seen, there is NO Visual Studio for Linux. You might want to check that again.
But I would bet that you can replace it with Visual Studio Code.
VM = Virtual Machine
Use Libre Office or Open Office on Linux. They contain equivalents for word, excel etc.. They can even open and save Microsoft documents (not sure if 100% compatible). Whether or not that'll work for you depends on your use case.
But let me tell you: I switched to Linux a year ago and am quite happy. I only boot up Windows for Games and Win-only programs.
I do my daily tasks and development in Linux.
krabs91@reddit
That’s because I made a typo 😅 it’s VM sorry

I wonder why Mint is so high, even thought literally all Linux gaming communities don't recommend it because of Wayland.
tnoy@reddit

BeachGlassGreen@reddit
What's wrong with Wayland?
HappyHuman924@reddit
I hadn't used Linux ever, or Unix for 30 years, so I just searched "best Linux version for newbies" and Mint was the general consensus. They stressed that it might not be the best at much of anything, but it would get you going with relative ease, and they said once you're comfortable-ish you can bounce around and try other distros to see if you fall in love.
Ethameiz@reddit
Mint has best out of the box experience, at least for me on laptop with nvidia discreet gpu and external display and with wifi
thrakkerzog@reddit
Steam deck is Wayland though
AK56___@reddit
All youtube channels promote Mint. it's good for a general-purpose distro/workstation, but I won't recommend it for people that want gaming. their DE/Display server is outdated, not optimal for the gaming hardware; the best options are either Gnome or KDE distros.

WINDOWS STILL SITTING THERE LOADED WITH GARBAGE TELEMETRY ADS UPDATES AT THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME LIKE IT NEEDS ATTENTION LIKE IT NEEDS YOU LINUX DOES NOT CARE IT BOOTS IT RUNS THE GAME IT GETS OUT OF THE WAY
NotADev228@reddit
It’s probably my 5 laptops and 3 live usbs I used to login on steam
Sinaaaa@reddit
Wait what, that is crazy.
Am I tripping that usually we have like 2% on Steam & 4% globally among the not just gaming populace?
bargu@reddit
As usual, don't take the numbers from Valve hardware survey as a gospel, it's better at showing a general trend than it is at showing exact number of users, it will probably go down next survey and people will lose their minds as usual.
lencc@reddit
Interesting to see that Ubuntu is number 3. It's quite a lot - at least when it comes to Steam users.
7H3l2M0NUKU14l2@reddit
...Can i buy Linux shares, or are those open Source too?
neckme123@reddit
i deslopped myself completely this year aswell. Windows being a laggy and broken mess and valve making gaming on linux on par if not better with windows made it a easy choice to swap

Windows 92.33% -4.28%
Knowing that Windows LOST more than 4% in a year, is more exciting than anything! Don't care if it were Mac or BSD or anything else. Let's fucking go!
A_Talking_iPod@reddit
Wait so we went from 2.20-ish% to 5.30-ish% in a month? Isn't that like, huge?
Daharka@reddit
It is but not as huge as that jump would imply. Last month was Lunar New year and the % went down from 3.5% to 2.2%. English language only still showed a rise to 8% though, and 11% now which is also massive.
A_Talking_iPod@reddit
Yeah that seems way more reasonable, even if still big. What seemed crazy was the Steam Linux userbase more than doubling in a single month
veechene@reddit
I haven't seen a survey in a long time. Then again, I get annoyed when steam pops up when I try to open a game and immediately close it. Good to see so many fellow users.

Before Christmas I had a Windows 10 gaming laptop that was on its last legs.
I had no interest in Windows 11, having deployed it at work.
I got myself a Framework laptop because they had released a new model with an RTX5070 in it. Started with Linux on it from day one (I've booted Windows 10 precisely twice on it, from the old NVMe from my previous laptop, to see if it would work, and to install the Framework drivers into that install of Windows).
Installed Steam, played all my games. I don't even BOTHER to look at the ProtonDB entry any more unless I have a problem. I just assume things will work. Bought several games in the recent sale... all "just worked". The only thing I had to change so far was adding a startup command in one game to make it skip a launcher (I hate launchers anyway).
No problems, everything is so much... snappier. No more junk doing things I don't want it to do. No more updates being forced on me, and the updates I choose to do take literally seconds.
I now have a Linux-only house. Laptop, Steam Deck, Raspberry Pi's. That's it.
I did this about 20 years ago, running Slackware as a primary desktop for 10 years, and honestly... I'd forgotten how bad Windows really is. It's only when you come off it and go onto something else for EVERYTHING (rather than just work, toys, headless servers, etc.) that you realise how bad it is as a GUI (I hesitate to say OS, it's a GUI).
DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Slackware, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 10, Ubuntu.
There's a pattern there. Windows gets shite and then Linux just carries on being decent. And my Windows requirements were always FORCED on me by what I needed to do - and in some cases that was actually gaming. I had Crossover Office on Slackware but it wasn't ready. I played with the early SteamOS (years ago) and it wasn't ready. But now... now it's ready. My Steam Deck proved it to me, and my laptop is just reinforcing quite how great a job they've done of that, against impossible odds.
With all the RAM etc. stuff I won't be changing hardware for quite a while, and I have a machine that should last me quite some time and I can use for absolutely everything I want to do (VMs, programming, gaming, writing, browsing, watching videos, etc.)
Even though they lied, Microsoft were right in their conference a few years ago: Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows. At least, for me.
P.S. Anyone starting out this way, Ubuntu isn't the best for it but if you go that path DO NOT INSTALL SNAP PACKAGES. Literallly turn that option off in the app store. Use traditional apt packages and install Steam manually (as they recommend). The snap stuff is just broken and nothing will work properly. I say this as someone who's constantly used Linux personally and professionally for 30+ years. I thought "Hey, maybe I'm just an old fogey, so I'll try this new way"... NO. Do not use snap packages. Steam snap package is inherently broken and games just don't work. Most snap packages are years out of date. The ones that aren't want to save your files in all kinds of weird places that you can't find again. Just... don't. The apt packages "just work".
birch_guy@reddit
Interesting that there isn't cachy os on thelist.
slo_koki@reddit
It is counted under Arch since it's based on Arch Linux...
birch_guy@reddit
That doesn't make sence since there is majaro which is arch based and mint which is ubuntu based.
Low-Shake6447@reddit
i think this month result is broken, if you see on the linux only survey there are distro called "64 bit" and "0 64 bit" literally.

Why, Fedora does not even have a tenth of Ubuntu's market share.

Its been a few months and I have not once felt the need to switch back to my windows install and even moved my other personal machines to it.
Akegata@reddit
What area the numbers that aren't shown here? Is the missing 4.5% just SteamOS?
SensuousChocolate@reddit
Meh, globally it’s still at 3.10%. Nowhere near high enough for it be noticed by companies. Once it hits 10%, then it’s actually somewhat relevant.
killerstreak976@reddit
I can't say for sure, but I think most of these are probably consumer devices shipped with linux under the hood, but this is still awesome to see
PusheenButtons@reddit
I was wondering this since that’s a big representation for Ubuntu Core there - the embedded immutable variant built around Snaps.
I wonder if someone is selling some kind of Steam Machine type embedded device using it in some market somewhere.
TripleSecretSquirrel@reddit
SteamOS is Arch based, so I think Steam Decks and anything else running SteamOS will register as Arch.

INITMalcanis@reddit
Anecdote isn't the singular of data, and a few pebbles don't make an avalanche, but...
I have helped 2 friends switch this year, and I have just got back from my brother's where I helped them build their new PC (which they didn't need but W10 was EoL, and it was "too old" for W11, meaning it doesn't have the TMP2) and set them up on Mint 22.3
Building the PC was more work than migrating their workflow to Linux; Mint really is an excellent "lifeboat" OS. All the hardware was correctly detected and supported with no intervention, even the WiFi printer/scanner.
Other Linux users I know are doing the same. There sure are a lot more pebbles all of a sudden, and now there's this big bouncing boulder from the Steam Survey rolling down the hill.
HornyDolphin25@reddit
I'm in that 0.15%, btw.
Witext@reddit
That’s awesome, I checked yesterday after submitting it myself, & it said Linux had decreased by 1.5%
PhotographingNature@reddit
Every year the survey that covers Chinese new year ends up being slightly different compared to the other 11 months. It has some knock on effect that they game more and end up being sampled for the survey more, and they don't seem to have quite the same trends as the western world.
addictiveboi@reddit
I switched to Kubuntu a few weeks ago. I've been on Windows since I first started using computers in like 2003-2004. The reason I switched is partly because I've gotten more into programming, but also because some of the latest Windows updates have been super annoying. One of them just started turning my internet off randomly. That hasn't ever happened to me before. I always loved Windows but the past like 6 months it's been a bit of a mess compared to before. I love Kubuntu. I haven't tried gaming on it yet, but I will probably try soon.

Okay, but come on. The survey deserves scrutiny when it lowers the Linux marketshare in dramatically in 1 month like it did last month and it deserves scrutiny when it more than doubles the marketshare in 1 month. These past 2 months just aren't accurate.
Mrr_Capone@reddit
SteamOS detected as Arch in this list?
mooky1977@reddit
That's an uptick that won't sustain. The general trend is upwards which is great, but there are always corrections as some users revert for whatever reason, be lack of technical knowledge, bad first experience, inability to get something done they need (proprietary windows software that doesn't work at all in Linux) or a game or games that just won't work because of anti-cheat.
I user Arch, BTW!

Just switched to Fedora last month after 25 years with microslop. I don’t know if I’d say I wish I’d done it sooner as it seems just recently it’s become more or less equal between them in terms of gaming experience but I’m so glad I did. No ads, faster and more responsive is what I’ve gotten so far.
I’m still trying to get the hang of coding on Linux. It’s not bad, just different.

Comfortable_Relief62@reddit
What tech stack are you coming from on Windows? VS and C++? C#?
Few key differences are mostly: No registry exists, everything is file based instead File IO is like 10x faster than you would expect compared to windows, especially for lots of little files Dependencies are largely managed by the system package manager (relevant for C/C++ mostly) Spend some time to understand the user permissions and group security model Applications in windows are almost always bundled “portably”, which is to say that the dependencies and dlls are alongside the executable, whereas for Linux they’re almost always installed on the system and loaded from the LD_LIBRARY_PATH (dynamic linker load paths) environment variable Environment variables are much more significant in general than windows
25vol96@reddit
Mostly manage C# and Python applications. Business and automation software. Yeah I’ve been messing around with flatpaks it’s been a bit of a struggle to grasp new concepts but I think I’m starting to get the hang of it.
The file IO speed simply amazing in comparison to windows. Being forced into it by IT for our business facing network is what killed it for me. I can’t believe it’s gotten to this point but damn 11 is so bad it makes Vista look better by comparison.

Upcoming fedora Linux workstation 44 will be even better:

nlflint@reddit
Proton already has support for ESync and FSync. For the vast majority of games, NTSync will make no discernible performance difference.
TipAfraid4755@reddit
Proton already has esync and fsync that can do the same job, so you may not see a drastic jump in performance, but you may notice you can play games that would otherwise be incompatible. Both of these improvements are a pretty big deal, given that Linux distros designed specifically for gaming are taking off. Getting as close to Windows gaming parity as possible would ensure a major win for FOSS operating systems.
