Really wondering what the video will turn out like. Linus (LTT) isn't really technically knowledgeable when it comes to anything outside Windows power-user usecases. I don't think LTT as a whole has any talent left who's into Linux. Torvalds notoriously does not give a hoot about userspace stuff and I fear the video will be centered around that because the large majority of LTT's audience also isn't receptive to more technical subjects like you'd find on channels like Level1Techs.
NightOfTheLivingHam@reddit
yeah it's funny how many actual techs they hired and failed to retain. Emily Young was their most tech oriented person (Formerly Anthony) who would probably be giddy over meeting the real Linus and they would probably be talking shop nonstop.
Liquid_Hate_Train@reddit
Emily left because she horrifically attacked by people online and wanted to focus on herself for awhile. That’s hardly a ‘retention failure’ on LMG’s part.
cmmndrkn613@reddit
It was a real shame to lose her to culture war bullshit. She made some of my favourite LTT content.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Conservatives are a cancer. Not every conservative is a bigot, but every bigot is a conservative.
jacobgkau@reddit
Sounds like bigotry is the cancer.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
True, but for some reason conservatives are drawn to bigotry like flies to shit. This somewhat makes sense on account of bigotry being tied to the status quo, which is what conservatism is all about, but, you know, it doesn't really sit right with me saying that conservatives really are the problem. But all the inconsistencies of conservatism start to make sense when you realize that their problem is that anything that helps other people is seen as a threat to themselves.
BillTran163@reddit
Don't you see? LTT is a failure for not ending the world's bigotry!!!!
/s obviously
PyroDesu@reddit
I still remember the series Linus and Emily (at the time, still Anthony) did trying to switch to Linux as a daily driver, and I swear Linus had to be trying to fuck it up as badly as he possibly could, while Emily didn't really have much issues at all.
RaspberryPiBen@reddit
That was Luke, not Emily. She's been using Linux for a while.
PyroDesu@reddit
Huh. I could have sworn there was one with Emily, where she chose Mint and he went with Arch for some insane reason?
I dunno, I haven't watched anything from LTT in a long time and was never really a follower.
RaspberryPiBen@reddit
Luke used Mint and had a largely good experience. Linus started with Pop, experienced a bug that deleted his DE, then switched to Manjaro.
PyroDesu@reddit
All right, just my memory being faulty I guess.
Patient-Tech@reddit
I would venture a guess that you're only half-correct about userspace. He likely doesn't care much about your slick program for finding the optimum stitch pattern for making penguin plushies, but if you tell him your program worked before you upgraded to a new kernel and now doesn't work, he'd be interested.
coyote_of_the_month@reddit
He most certainly gives a hoot about not breaking userspace.
WE DO NOT BREAK USERSPACE.
static_motion@reddit
Haha yeah, that's true, but I mean more things like "this distro vs that" and "this DE vs that DE". The only thing I've ever seen Torvalds talk with even a modicum of interest in that realm is packaging and the mess it is.
jacobgkau@reddit
I think "consumer-level" might be a better term to express what you mean. Torvalds cares about the kernel and its enterprise uses. I don't think he cares what people put on their personal laptops.
coyote_of_the_month@reddit
I think that mirrors the attitude of a lot of long-time power users, myself included. I could give a shit less what distro I'm using, and I've learned to embrace the default UI except when it really bugs me (e.g. gnome-terminal's lack of ligature support).
zeno0771@reddit
Crazy how so many people conflate "not being a people-person" with not caring about userspace. The man has torched would-be contributors to a cinder on the mailing-list for going anywhere near the possibility of breaking userspace.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Emily is still there Isn't she?
intelminer@reddit
No. She left over a year ago
Indolent_Bard@reddit
FUCK!
dimspace@reddit
Yeh, Emily (formerly Anthony) was the only big time Linux geek there. Luke is the only one I think who actually daily drives
Girtablulu@reddit
Of the hosts, but Luke is a Linux head as well and I bet there are tones of others
stormdelta@reddit
That's an understatement - he's routinely wrong about those use cases too. At this point, if someone says something wrong about PC hardware/gaming and it's being upvoted or repeated a lot, I can usually trace it back to LTT.
LTT is basically the tabloid equivalent of PC hardware news
silenceimpaired@reddit
Very weird it isn’t happening on that other channel
zucchini_up_ur_ass@reddit
What other channel? Why would it be weird?
I_Want_To_Grow_420@reddit
It's likely because LTT reached out and asked to make a video and L1T or GN has not.
a_a_ronc@reddit
They discussed what the video will be like on their podcast last night. They are building a new computer with him, because apparently the last few people just make it and ship it to him. Then it’s of course also part interview at the same time because of course. Interview sounds like it might be ok because they said they tried to skip most questions that have been asked in other videos so that even if it’s terrible, it will be uniquely terrible. All of this was chosen by Torvalds. They sent him a long list of ideas and let him choose.
MasSunarto@reddit
Brother, who is the man beside Mr. Torvalds and why does this thread's mood seem to be "expectant" and "hyped"?
beatwixt@reddit
A tech youtuber with the energy of a puppy dog who is also more than a bit of a self-serving asshole.
The youtube channel (Linus Tech Tips) is mostly low information garbage with some cool info episodes sprinkled in here and there.
They also have made some cool nerdy merch like a big pillow shaped like a desktop microprocessor.
I watched some of his stuff about setting up some fileservers for a while and then stopped when he started saying that using adblock is stealing. There are many minor “scandals” like that, but maybe also some more serious accusations of misbehavior.
MasSunarto@reddit
Brother, thank you very much for the introduction. Unfortunately I don't watch YouTube nor follow any "tech personas", so my knowledge is too little to understand this situation. 🙏
FabianN@reddit
Eh, "big nerds" are pretty harsh on him cause his target demographic are closer to the general public than them. That and the "big nerd" favorite tech-tuber put out multiple hit pieces that were largely one sided stories that lacked the full event and hearsay alligations, and people ran with that as gospel.
He got shit for using Linux the way an average person putting in a good effort forward would; reading and trusting the error messages literally (in contrast to understanding that error messages can be a cascading symptom of an issue deeper in the system) and following the first results on Google that sounded right, which messed up his install. The problem is that he was dealing with a new bug in the distro that wasn't well documented but gave messages and symptoms very similar to different known issue, and of course implimenting the fix for the issue he didn't have just made things worse.
His goal is really to be a stepping stone into tech for those that are curious but not really deep in it. It's lightweight and easy to digest; pop-scifi to your hard-scifi so to say.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
I wouldn't call the Gamer's Nexus video a hit piece. For one, that's not what they do. For another, they were bringing up legitimate concerns.
Girtablulu@reddit
You mean like missing out crucial context, not asking for comment (which he always did) trying to double down and not correcting his stuff after he got called out and proof was shown?
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Huh, is that what happened? This is genuinely news to me. I always thought gn was better than that.
FabianN@reddit
GN did correctly hit on that they had some process issues. But that issue was already known internally (and externally, ltt publicly talked about it), but it was nothing more than what you'd expect to see from a company that went from ~10 to over 100 in a few years with a guy acting as a CEO that has no experience in it. But when the original GN video came out they already had a new CEO (literally started a few weeks before) and were starting to change their processes.
The big fire was with the billet situation, and there were mistakes done there, but GN told was a very one sided story that left out some key details. GN reported that ltt sold a component the manufacturer wanted back. That's true, but what wasn't said was that component was originally given to ltt to be kept and the message that they changed their minds didn't get to the right people before the part was auctioned off for charity. Pretty much the whole thing was only showing small parts of the conversation.
The other drama you probably don't know had to do with a browser add on that had some scummy practices; honey. Lots of creators had been advertising it, and it was found a long time ago that honey was hijacking affiliate links (a way creators make money). The news of that was subdued but spread across the creator community quickly and everyone stopped working with honey. Mind you, ltt didn't discover this, they found out the same way all other creators found out. They made a little post in their forums about it, and moved on. Years later it comes out that honey was also screwing over the users too, giving them bad deals. This was new information. And somehow that and the old honey news was pinned on ltt for not telling everyone about the shitty practices that honey was doing, as if it was their obligation.
Oh, and Louis Rossman bitched about not having a paid trip for his girlfriend to an ltt convention (something that they did end up offering and Louis didn't take them up on after it was then offered, because... 🤷).
All in all, there's parts of truth in what was said, but what was missing changed the framing significantly.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Thanks a lot! I always knew people were harder on him than they needed to be. Dude's got issues, but he knows that, and that's why he's no longer the CEO.
FabianN@reddit
Choosing to not get the full story to publish only a partial truth that misrepresented the events, and then doubling down on not needing to follow basic journalism ethics because you're better than that? Yeah, that's a hit piece.
The honey addon debacle made it even more clear that GN cares more about stirring drama that accuracy.
CrazyKilla15@reddit
IIRC a bug that only existed for a few hours too, which is really funny. If he had tried it an hour or two earlier or later it would've been fine.
FabianN@reddit
Thing is, the errors are not constant, and when they happen they get corrected quickly, and tend to be minor. I mean, for billet, their "false results" ended up being in line with the results everyone else got.
They even got blamed for displaying a product graphic from a company (Nvidia I think?) that had a mistake in it, a mistake that was impossible for them to verify at the time.
Fact is, mistakes in publishing/reporting companies do happen, even in the highest prestigious institutions (at a rate of about 60% in professional news journalism). The mistakes should and need to be pointed out and corrected. But it's not like it's unique to any one business. It's a universal aspect of what happens when you have people doing things; people make mistakes.

CaptainDarkstar42@reddit
Lmao he didn't say adblock is stealing, just that it was a form of piracy which I understand. But I don't care because piracy is based as fuck. Hell Linus has quite a few videos on pieating
beatwixt@reddit
I don’t have time to go and find the WAN show link for you, but he said in response to someone saying they support him by buying merch, show it should he fine to have adblock on, that paying him for one thing did not make it okay to steal from him in another way.
I don’t know for sure that “stealing” was the word he used, but it was a word for the unlawful taking of property, not a copyright violation term like “piracy.”
I don’t do business with people who don’t want my business, so I unsubscribed right after watching that.
CaptainDarkstar42@reddit
I literally watched that show live as well as every WAN show since. You are missing the point. It's ok if you don't like him, that's fine but like come on. He said Adblock was a form of piracy because it blocks ads which are used to pay for the service in the first place. I do get what he means. He also isn't anti-piracy. He has had multiple videos on his channel about how to pirate from YouTube to games and the like. His thing has always been "if you are morally comfortable pirating it" due to what it is, who makes it, how did you get the content and so on.
Hell man he has a video on his channel on how to block ads. I swear if I disagreed with everyone on such minor issues as these, I couldn't have any friends or consume any content whatsoever.
beatwixt@reddit
He said lots of things, one of which was literally that you are stealing from him if you use adblock, even if you have “I support you in other ways” as an excuse.
Honestly, the piracy argument doesn’t make any more sense than stealing—it just is morally considered more of a gray area. It is not piracy to use copies in ways the producer disfavors. Even if you signed a contract not to use ad block and that contract term was determined to be valid, it would potentially be a contract violation but it would not be a copyright violation (this is not legal advice).
I don’t dislike him. He has just expressed that he views using adblock as a violation if the creator-viewer relationship, and I have behaved what I consider to be the appropriate way, ending the relationship when there is no mutually agreed upon proper arrangement for the relationship.
CaptainDarkstar42@reddit
Ok ok lol I don't think I have EVER heard him say using Adblock is a "violation of the creator-viewer relationship.". Where on Earth did you get that from??? Again I don't think he ever used the word stealing, only piracy.
beatwixt@reddit
Here is the tweet and quote:

Listen (again, if you have before) to that whole LTT segment and tell me my interpretation as a violation of the creator-viewer relationship is an inaccurate summary.
CaptainDarkstar42@reddit
I haven't had a chance to look at the YouTube video yet but I see the post. I didn't know he put it like that. I was mistaken. It's pretty funny.
beatwixt@reddit
The reality is that it is a better argument than saying it is piracy.
Piracy and copyright is about the right to control copies of your work. It gives you no control over someone else’s device or their attention. Completely irrelevant to the question. There is no right to make money off your work. Make it if you can, fail if you can’t. From a piracy perspective, he claims he should have control over your device because otherwise he loses his right to make money. Not a right he has, not a type of control he has. Completely irrelevant to copyright.
But entering a performance without paying the due, there is a real analogy there. Not that I am saying I agree with it, just that it isn’t self-evidently poorly formed as an argument like the piracy one.
FabianN@reddit
I don't see that anywhere. He is saying that you should be aware that by doing that you are interrupting and breaking the expected exchange and just that you should be aware and acknowledge that.
He still encourages people to ad block. Just that people should understand how blocking ads can affect the income of people that you might want to actually support. That you should be an informed consumer.
beatwixt@reddit
He is saying that the baseline deal is that you watching content is in exchange for the ads. And that you exerting what is basic control over your device to install an ad blocker, which people do because ads on the internet are often overwhelming and destructive to the experience on many sites, is a modification of that deal.
He then says maybe the modification of that is reasonable, but claiming that this is the baseline deal is claiming some sort of moral control over your device.
FabianN@reddit
Yeah, we agree he's saying that. All of what you said there is what he's said, including the reasons to install ad blockers, which he does not discourage.
That's where you completely lose me. He's very explicit that the morals of piracy are personal and he can not speak for any one else's morals and what they may find right or wrong there.
beatwixt@reddit
Let me try a different explanation.
What does "piracy" mean?
He doesn't explicitly explain what he means as piracy--clearly he doesn't literally mean any actual copyright violations--but it seems to be that "piracy" as a broader abstract notion means that there is some set of rules around how you are supposed to handle content and then the piracy is the violation of those rules.
Then if installing and using an ad blocker is piracy, then the rules you are violating are a set of controls on what you can install and use on your device.
So then he is claiming there is a set of rules, and those rules prevent you from installing ad blocking software that simply ignores certain parts of web pages. And that you have to make the moral decision that you are okay violating those rules in order to use that software.
I am saying that those rules are some random thing he made up that has nothing to do with piracy and are limitations on how you use your computer rather than limitations about his content.
FabianN@reddit
Yes, he's not talking about legal terms, he's talking about it in a more abstract manner, a functional principal of how it works.
And yes, there are generally "rules", or better said, an expected agreement (I'll use the two terms interchangeably here, rules and expected agreement, because you keep using rules, but I think "rules" is the wrong word, "expected agreement" is a more accurate term IMO), around the consumption of media. These are not universal rules for all media; every creator (and I mean creator more generally, not a youtuber specifically, but any person that creates any kind of media) or publisher has their own rules for their own creations. Some openly give it out with zero exchange expectation. Some want you to pay for every single viewing, like a live performance show. Some want you to pay once to be able to access the content for-ever, etc. There's many ways this exchange can be structured, but it's done by the creator/publisher of the content, and it is fully their right. It is their product, their content. It belongs to them and they can do what they want with it. If they say that you need to pay a billion dollars and only you may experience the content once and may not share it with anyone, you don't have to like that deal but the creator is free to ask that in exchange and none of us have a right to that content. If they say no one can see it, that is also their right. It is their work and they can determine what they want in exchange for their work and none of us have the right to just ignore that. If you are circumventing that exchange that the creator is asking for, that is essentially the function of piracy.
But not having the right and not having the ability is not the same thing. The creator is not obligated to give us the content in a form of exchange that only we want, but we do have the ability to circumvent those agreements most of the time. And he fully supports people having that ability and using that ability.
The greater point was that excess abuse of that ability can cause a creator to decide to no longer create, and so if you like that creator you should consider how your actions can play into the creator creating more content.
Everything else about these expectations being controls on what you can or can't do, that's where you lose me. The rules don't prevent you from doing anything. Those rule, as I said earlier, are just expectations. He is telling no one what they should do. He is saying you should understand what the expected exchange is, understand explicitly what you are circumventing when you pirate or ad block, what, if anything, the creator who's content you are consuming, is losing out on by you consuming it are or are not getting by you consuming it in context to what the creator expected to get.
beatwixt@reddit
I think we agree about what he is saying and you just find my terminology unintuitive.
> And yes, there are generally "rules", or better said, an expected agreement....
This is essential all I was saying. He says essentially content creators have the right to put something out there and then say you have to do XYZ to watch it.
XYZ might be don't install and use ad block software (i.e. this is what I mean by control over your device). XYZ might be also send me some money in the mail when you watch (i.e. this is basically what I mean by the right to be paid).
Separately from the discussion about what he is saying, I disagree with this notion completely. Content creators in general have no such rights. They have rights over copies and performances. I don't just mean this in a legal sense, there are is no abstract right to have me follow their rules. I actually think the proper abstract rights are smaller than the legal rights over content.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
The thing is, he was 100% correct and people were just dogpiling him for being right.
beatwixt@reddit
No, he definitely used stealing or a similar word. And that non-quote is my remembered interpretation of the implication of the phrasing he used.
I am seeing some things about Linus and AdBlock from earlier. I will try to find and post the exact quote.
Liquid_Hate_Train@reddit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-PH2GUy_zM&t=571s
It wasn’t hard to find. Piracy is exactly the word he used.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
They really attacked him for no reason. Well, he did say something that challenged their preconceived notions, but still, it's a shame how stupid people can be.
FabianN@reddit
More accurately, he said that pirating is a method of circumventing the expected exchange for the product, and that adblock also circumvents that expected exchange, making them equivalent. He didn't even say to stop, he just said that you should understand how your actions impact the creators of the content you consume; basically that you should be an informed consumer.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Yeah, people just dogpiled him for no reason because he said something that challenged their preconceived notions. People are fucking stupid like that.
coyote_of_the_month@reddit
He'll also sell you a $70 screwdriver. I'm told it's an amazing screwdriver, but for that price, it damn well better be.
CrazyKilla15@reddit
The funny thing is it legitimately is a nice screwdriver, and its in the same price range as other high quality comparable screwdrivers from traditional "good tool" brands. You can always get a cheap set of drivers that "works well enough" from a hardware store, but a quality tool you pay for.
coyote_of_the_month@reddit
It's $20 more than a MegaPro, half the price of a comparable Wera product, yeah I guess it's kinda right up in the middle.
Nestramutat-@reddit
Bought one because I like Linus.
It is the best screwdriver I've ever used. Is it twice as good as my Megapro ratcheting driver? No. But it is better.
coyote_of_the_month@reddit
People were drooling all over the LTT screwdrivers, so I went out and bought a Megapro. It's fine. It's the first ratcheting screwdriver I've owned, I think, which is wild since I'm kind of a tool junky.
CrazyKilla15@reddit
Just as a note, while LTT licensed the megapro design, they also modified and tuned it a lot, in particular iirc LTTs is smaller.
To be clear, not saying megapro's is bad or anything. Great driver, its just not "LTT's but cheaper and minus branding"
Nestramutat-@reddit
Yeah, the Megapro is what inspired LTT's. It has a smoother ratcheting mechanism, better bit storage, and overall feels more "premium." Not worth the difference in price unless you want to support the channel.
stormdelta@reddit
Man, it's sad you're being downvoted for this. I really expected this sub to be better informed or at least less sycophantic about one of the more annoying tech youtubers, especially one who has barely any relation or interest in Linux at all.
beatwixt@reddit
Meh. People who are super into LTT will see it and vote and others will ignore.
It was more annoying when people were downvoting but no one was responding yet.
But now that I see it is because they didn’t know and don’t believe that he said adblock is stealing, well that makes sense. If I was misrepresenting someone’s favorite tech youtuber, I get why they would downvote.
Of course, it does mean that they haven’t noticed that he says a bunch of different things on some topic to generate controversy, and them responds only to the bad arguments from other people and ignores the good ones and pretends he didn’t say some things that he said.
Indolent_Bard@reddit

Ahh, the Tanenbaum–Torvalds debate?
Desmaad@reddit
Wasn't the rationale for microkernels really about stability and safety? If a part of the OS misbehaves, it can't wreak havok in kernel space. If any of it crashes, just restart it.
fistful_of_ideals@reddit
Pretty much, since everything else is a process and the kernel is reduced to handling strictly low-level operations (allocation, IPC, translation, etc.). Also highly portable and platform agnostic, works with limited resources, and has a high degree of modularity. At least that was the argument.
Bingo - the stuff above sounds great if you're running on a 68k or a tiny security processor, but flash forward to 1993 (with the advent of the original Pentium), superscalar architectures are designed around long pipelines, complex branch predictors, and cheap huge caches, so evicting or otherwise invalidating almost everything for a context switch eats way more than a few register load/stores.
Desmaad@reddit
The Amiga OS' microkernel, EXEC, supposedly ran in userspace, which is bizarre.
tadfisher@reddit
It makes sense if you don't have an MMU or anything like a privileged execution mode (and no, the 68000's "supervisor mode" doesn't really count).
fistful_of_ideals@reddit
Preemptive multitasking, so long as your userland processes don't completely shit the bed, lol
Desmaad@reddit
It does have some co-operative features, like system calls that can block other processes from running, but according to the article, it still qualifies as preemptive, especially since it uses the clock for timing interrupts.
fistful_of_ideals@reddit
I saw that, using round-robin scheduling, which is technically preemptive multitasking, I just though the Torvalds quote was funny.
Side note, I love that you can go to pretty much any Linux forum to debate the intricacies of kernel development and end up talking about all kinds of esoteric shit. What a tight knit group of nerds.
Desmaad@reddit
TBH, I don't really understand preemptive scheduling, other than it's the opposite of cooperative scheduling, which is when the kernel politlely asks tasks to give up resources.

It is a federated forum organized in a hierarchy; ISPs and big orgs historically ran news servers that would synchronize between one another, allowing someone with a dial-up connection to their town's ISP in Bumblescum, Arizona to access the same service as people studying at the University of Moscow in theory. It predated the WWW and still technically exists and is used, though spam can be a big problem. Topics were organized under a system using dots as a separator - for example, comp.os.minix for discussion of the MINIX OS. SinisterCheese@reddit
Umm... Actually. Finland is not part of Scandinavia. There is a sea between Scandinavian plateau and Finland. The actual Scandinavian countries are geographically Denmark, Norway and Sweden. If you mean the group which also includes Finland and the autonomous region of Ahvenanmaa (Åland), then you need to use the term "Fennoscandinavian" or the "Nordics".
I live in Finland btw.
Now... Lets see how many get the joke.

I understand that it is, in fact, a joke, but for reference Americans were taught for a long time that Scandinavia was: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland.

Scandinavia is Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The Nordic countries includes Iceland and Finland, as well as the autonomous regions of the Faroe islands, Greenland and Åland.
As a Swede I'd say that Scandinavia is used outside of here than we actually do ourselves, people will more so talk about "Norden" so the Nordics. Completely based on vibes but a little tidbit still
SinisterCheese@reddit
I'm mocking the copy pasta: "What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX."
zeno0771@reddit
OHHHH, the old Stallman song-and-dance. That makes more sense now..
kwowo@reddit
No it doesn't. As a Norwegian I don't consider Finland or Iceland as part of Scandinavia, because they're not. You're both Nordic, and Finland is part of Fennoscandia along with Sweden and Norway, but it's not a distinction anyone uses. Your colonial history with Sweden is irrelevant. Scandinavia is Denmark, Norway, Sweden. Nordics is Scandinavia + Iceland and Finland. It's not a matter of opinion.
tobiasvl@reddit
The comment is a reference to the GBU/Linux (GNU+Linux) copypasta. That said, you were taught wrong, because Finland is not considered part of Scandinavia (at least not by Scandinavians).
OldmanLemon@reddit
I know this is copypasta, I'd just like to throw in Torvalds is from the Swedish minority of Finland and his mother tongue is swedish. I am pretty sure he has also said his children also speak English as mother tongue but also Swedish and not Finnish. So him going scando is totally appropriate

SinisterCheese@reddit
Nope. Finnish-Swedish. Finland has 2 official languages, Finnish (Majority) and Swedish (Minority). Finnish cultural identity and language standardisation was developed mid to late 1800s by Swedish speaking intellectuals, academics, upper class and cultural elite.
Their father Nils Torvalds is MEP for Finland under the Swedish People's party of Finland Their grandfather's Leo Törnqvist (One of the First Professor of Statistics in Finland) and Ole Torvalds (Poet and a journalist).
Linus Torvalds is very mich Finnish, just from the Swedish speaking minority.

Well I stopped following LTT after they screwed up Billet Lab with a very poorly made review, then proceeding to sell the prototype they had to review. And after that, after a lot of other shit came out about how they generally did a very poor job with reviews in general, plagiarism and even mistreating of staff.
So I'm a bit conflicted seeing THE Linus with the canadian namesake. If, on one side, I guess it's normal to concede some interview or collaborate with channels that might reach a lot of people, on the other it makes me a bit sad.
untetheredocelot@reddit
Yeah look into it a bit closer. It was a review that they okayed with Billet who retroactively changed their mind about giving them a prototype. They fucked up when the prototype was sold but this was not some uber military secret that had massive implications for the company the original plan was to let them keep it.
GamersNexus has a axe to grind and sensationalized the whole thing to a massive extent for clout.
Is LTT perfect? Absolutely not and they’ve been called out apologised and attempted to fix it.
Whether that’s enough for you is another matter. But at least look into the whole story.
Gatsu1981@reddit
The review was obviously agreed upon but this doesn't fhange the facts. Ltt knew it was a prototype and the mess wasn't certainly due to Billet changing their minds. And sorry but if I give you a product that is built for a specific video card and you review it with another, I do understand them having second thoughts.
Besides, the fact that it wasn't a weapon doesn't mean anything, it just sounds like a lame excuse not to say Ltt screwed up bad: LTT deals with computer hardware, they should just be serious about it, both for their viewers and the companies. Plus, they were late in responding to Billet and didn't initially say the things how they were, so very unprofessional behaviour all around.
The feud with GamerNexus was started by Linus Sebastian himself, during a podcast in which he criticized other channels - GN included - testing methods, especially comparing them to their own. GamerNexus just defended themselves, exposing LTT's mistakes and overlooks.
Around the same time, talks about the toxic work environment came out, which could also, not only, explain the multiple errors in the tests.
And so, LTT published some videos to explain the situation (not of apologies) which made things worse - also because they repeated the same trite sexual innuendos in a video which was addressing possible sexual harassment on the workplace 🤦- leading to them eventually taking a break to "review the processes", which is a way not to say that they were just letting the heat dissipate, which I believe ultimately worked, since they're back to do the usual stuff.
I did follow the matter quite carefully, and they really gave me very bad vibes, so I'm not following anymore, even though it's something from a couple of years ago and I might misremember some minor details. The core of the matter is this anyway, so well, go on following them but I will still refrain even if they have a collab with THE Linus, thank you.
untetheredocelot@reddit
You haven’t looked into the situation then.
Here’s what happened
Billet sends prototype with no expectation of it being returned to LTT for review along with the correct GPU.
LTT misplaces (AFAIK) the GPU but wants to go ahead with a different GPU and reaches out to billet about it and they get the go ahead.
Results are lacklustre and they reach out to Billet again and get the go ahead to publish.
Billet after publication changes their mind and asks for the prototype back.
LTT mistakenly sells the block and there are a series of miscommunications (according to ltt) that led to this happening.
Billet reaches out to GN and the whole shit show happens.
Now does this absolve them? Absolutely not. It’s not as egregious or sensationalist as GN made it out to be.
As for the other situation
It wasn’t Linus on a podcast it was an employee on a tour with another channel. Who was might I add let go/ quit shortly after. Nothing said by Linus himeself again look into the situation closer.
As for the toxic workplace allegations and harassment allegations they resulted in nothing but I do believe there could have been some truth to the whole situation and it was a hard place to work at. I’m not going to invalidate someone’s experiences there but LTT seems to have come out of it clean after a 3P investigation.
This is why I have an issue with GN where their whole image is being this infallible champion on the consumer but in this situation exaggerated and twisted the narrative so much to hurt a direct competitor.
You did not follow it closely as you only clearly saw the GN side of things. As a follower of both to me LTT made mistakes and deserved criticism but didn’t do anything malicious.
GN on the other hand cynically presented half truths in the worst possible light for clout.
Not to mention the petty jibes during the honey situation. That even his own fans called him out on.
Gatsu1981@reddit
And again, you're being pedantic on minor details that do not change the whole picture. You can say I have to look into it a third time but I did hack then and, as much as I might not still remember al the commas, I do remember my conclusions.
So, the fact that Billet didn't initially want its prototype back doesn't change anything, it's only the detail that allowed them to know the prototype was sold, otherwise they would simply have ignored it.
While the fact that they would have accepted to have the product reviewed is something I honestly doubt, I tried to look for some confirmation but I couldn't find anything in regard. Again, though, it would move very little when it comes to the general criticism about the testing procedures, since there's plenty of other examples not involving Billet, and nothing when it comes to the integrity and damage control when it comes to selling something you're not supposed to sell. And, they straight up lied saying they already contacted Billet, when in fact they only replied AFTER Gamer Nexus video.
About the source of the feud: while it is true that it was an employee and not Linus to throw the stone first, Linus himself did comment on it, lamenting "unprofessional" behaviour from othrr channel commenting "without taking into account personal relationships" which is what actually spawned GN response. Maybe you're the one who should start looking into it, since it's like in the first minute of their famous video response and the main spark of the controversy, not a side note.
Then, each following commentary by LTT just msde it worse, exposing Sebastian's inability of backstepping ant admitting an ounce of responsibility, deflecting anything as if the fault was with people noticing their shortcomings, instead than themselves.
I'm not surprised that the matter about toxic environment didn't go anywhere, but at least some of the issues Madison Reeve talked about are very likely true, since some previous and unrelated interviews from other members of the staff, just a few months before the matter exploded, underlined exactly the same problems, like a release schedule too dense and too little time to work on new videos. And especially about this, I guarantee I did look into LTT point of view, I watched all their response videos and, as I said already, they had the nerve to pull off the - already old and not so fun anymore - "69" joke, in a moment when there were fresh sexual harassment allegations pending on their heads. Very bad taste, even in a moment that demanded quite the seriousness.
All in all, my issue is EXACTLY with the way LTT responded to criticisms and straight accusations: they deflected until the matter exploded in their hands, after which they - wisely - decided to stay put for a while, saying a lot about the technical issues and very little about the rest. What's even more grotesque is how Linus himself said they were intensifying the effort to preserve the mental health of their employees... After they've been harassed ONLINE, so not on the workplace itself, and certainly not the one employee who accused them.
So yeah, I have looked into the situation and it really stinks, no matter what other little inaccuracy you may find in my memories of it from two years ago, rest assured that, back then, I remembered the details much better than I do now, but I still know where I stand on the matter.

People still watch LTT? The whole thing with the Billet Labs cooler and their fake, bs apology really revealed what a horrible person he is. I have no interest in supporting that asshole and his fake GPU performance metrics.
FabianN@reddit
Here's the actual event for those reading;
Billet sent a 4090 GPU waterblock to LTT for LTT to test, own, and keep. LTT inventory accidentally separated the water-block from the 4090 GPU that Billet sent.
When the LTT writers grabbed the waterblock they didn't know it was also sent with a GPU, didn't see it because they had been separated, and couldn't also get another 4090 to test it with (this was during the stock issues, all their known 4090s were active on other projects), emailed Billet if they were fine with them using a 3090 instead, and Billet okay'd it (why they didn't ask about the 4090 they sent in with the waterblock, who knows). LTT ran their tests, found that the GPU water-block that costs many times more the competition ($800 vs $200) performed about the same, emailed Billet to ask if those test results were okay and as expected, and Billet confirmed that they were.
They published the video with the conclusion "it's probably not worth it for most people". After the video was published Billet changed their minds and wanted their waterblock that they had given to LTT back. They sent their request to LTT, which was forwarded to the warehouse team, and for one reason or another they missed that email. They put the waterblock into a pile of gear to be auctioned off for charity, and it was.
Later, another youtuber put out a criticism video where they talked with Billet who told him that LTT sold their equipment they wanted back and that they tested it on the wrong card, said nothing else of the events such as it was initially meant to be kept and that the entire testing process was approved by them. And now we are here.
Mountain out of a molehill.
CrazyKilla15@reddit
I've never heard that a 4090 was sent with the block, whered that come from?
Other than that your comments pretty spot on re the billet situation. Billet pretty much straight up lied and LTT had no moral or legal obligation to send the block to billet. Though given other things going on they couldnt afford not to anyway.
FabianN@reddit
It's in some of the original staments and published emails.
I did have the cards mixed up though, the block was for a 3090 but they tested it on a 4090. Minor mistake to the actual event.
agisten@reddit
Damn, Trump's admin should hire you as the master of creating alternate facts and reality. Can you provide any proof of so called facts you stated here? Why would a tiny, 2-3 people start-up send an EXPENSIVE part to LTT to "own"? It makes zero sense. Regardless of your alleged miscommunication in LTT, Linus decided to trash the company publicly without double-checking facts. Tiny startup reputation ruined over terrible journalism. LTT walks away, staying in misunderstanding and "Mountain out of a molehill."
FabianN@reddit
The email exchange was published back then. Case in point that it was gifted:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F3qdGnBWsAA-Hre?format=jpg&name=large
And it's industry standard that if you're giving something to be kept but do not want it resold, that is clarified explicitly and not assumed.
Others have ran their tests on billet's products and have gotten similar results, including GN.
When your source is someone that thinks they're above journalistic ethics, deletes their statements when the community turns on their bullshit, and doesn't publish corrections... Your grasp on the facts will be weak; much like a trump follower that just listens to what their daddy tells them is the truth and doesn't look any further.

"In about 1981, Törnqvist bought a VIC-20 and asked his daughter Anna’s son, Linus Torvalds, to help him program it. Törnqvist wrote out BASIC language programs, and grandson Linus, aged about eleven, typed them in. "He wanted me to share in the experience [and] get me interested in math," wrote Torvalds later.[13] These were Linus's first programming experiences. Ten years later, Torvalds began to write the Linux kernel."
My first computer was a Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer 2 from Radio Shack, but I became interested in computers because a friend had a VIC-20 and his cousin had Commodore 64.

The billet labs thing was negligence, not malice, and they did their best to fix it.

Torvalds and a rat. Great Torvalds!

Oh please no, the LTT team and audience is basically a layer 8 problem, more so, when it comes to Linux.

More Linus, more fun
BlokZNCR@reddit
he got extra 10+ years old more?
Jarngreipr9@reddit
I don't know why, but my mind strongly associates these Linus' lifespan prediction jokes with the actual time when Linux will remain a decent and functional OS
SigfridoElErguido@reddit
Because that’s likely what will happen. Linux will be something governed by committee which will be controlled by some shitty corporations. Enshittification will follow.
paradoxbound@reddit
Please read how the Linux Foundation is set up. It is mostly self funded by endowment and grants the interest from which funds the core maintainers, including Linus. As well as the supporting administrators and financial staff that take care of the investment side. In addition corporate and government partners pay an annual fee to be associated with the foundation. The power resides with the board which is dominated by Linus and other hand picked maintainers.
When the old guard pass on their own designated successors will continue the project.
Think about it what would be the purpose of ruining the kernel? It’s not a money making project, it’s a foundational block of money making projects. If the project doesn’t work it doesn’t make money.
ThellraAK@reddit
You can't be "self funded" and grant funded at the same time.
paradoxbound@reddit
Why not both? Why don’t you just fucking Google it?
ThellraAK@reddit
In 2024 $125M out of $292M came from donations and membership, in that same year they spent $299M
$73M in project services, $36M in training and certification, $54M in event sponsorships and registrations and $2.8M in other.
The Linux foundations funding is absolutely not "self funded" they appear to be entirely dependent on money coming in to them from outside sources.

Microsoft might ruin the Kernel to promote Windows again Google to include more telemetry and lockdown non-google options Intel to promote their architectures
Without a huge political figure, Linux is doomed
paradoxbound@reddit
Microsoft are running a massive amount of their Azure infrastructure on Linux, what reason makes financial sense to the ELT and shareholders to break one of their most profitable divisions and upset their customers? Why would Amazon, IBM and many others just let them do that? Grow up kid!
coyote_of_the_month@reddit
MS could poach developers who are contributing to the video stack to work on features that benefit Azure. This kills two birds with one stone: they disrupt development that could be a threat to its core Windows business, and they snap up experienced developers to help further their own interests in areas like virtualization, networking, etc.
BashfulMelon@reddit
And how will the hypothetical committee prevent someone like Greg K.H. from continuing a branch of the kernel that's developed the way it's done now?
Nobody can un-GPL the Linux kernel.
MouseJiggler@reddit
That's exactly the thing, I really hope he doesn't pass it on to a committee. Committees turn everything they touch into shit.
gramoun-kal@reddit
Hurd is just around the corner.
BluFudge@reddit
we hope lol. i think Linux will be fine even after his passing but I wish him health to keep going.
Beneficial-Owl-4430@reddit
linus will live until the kernel is perfect ,
really_not_unreal@reddit
Once it is feature complete he will change to an esoteric versioning scheme where digits of Tau are added to the end of the version number.
Beneficial-Owl-4430@reddit
tau- the pi nerds pi
really_not_unreal@reddit
I'm specifically suggesting tau because they are up to version 6.17, meaning that they have another 10 upcoming versions to get things perfect (whereas using pi as a versioning scheme would mean they'd be a decade too late).
