Why do so many Daily Mail commentators fantasise about the dreadful things they would like to see done to criminals?

Posted by HallowedAndHarrowed@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 220 comments

RelevantAnalyst5989@reddit

You're thinking the first group just wants to be violent to *anyone* It's about criminality and feeling like the worst kinds of people, such as serial rapists and child killers. The people who inflict the most pain and suffering in the world are not punished enough. 99% of parents whose kids were murdered by sick people would jump at the chance to brutally kill those people. As in a truly just society pedophiles and child killers would receive this as punishment.

RelevantAnalyst5989@reddit

Yes, but now we have old people living into their 90's in care homes or having routine nurse visits. Clogging up GP appointments, etc. There's no way this doesn't cost a fortune. 20 years ago, people had a good innings and buggered off to the great beyond in their late 70's

Wouldn't smoking **sensibly** mean you are doing it outside and away from others. Feels like an unfair comparison to put a caveat on drinking when comparing the harm to smoking.

Well, obviously, people should also have investments and a financial retirement plan. I mean, that's just so obvious I would never have possibly thought that was what you were advocating. Figured it just went without saying. Hence, my confusion.

So you're implying that *most* (50%+) will not help out their parents in old age. And remember, I'm not saying be full-time carers. I'm talking about general helping out or checking in with them and making sure they are happy with the nursing carers, etc... you're saying *most* children won't do this? In contend they *would* do this, and therefore being an old person with family is a better than being an old person with no family.

Regular daily help obviously not no, but even just coming round here and there and making sure the carers are providing the help is a massive plus. Old people with absolutely no one looking out for them end up on a Panorama programme getting knocked about. Family is everything, everyone else is just a stranger.

You're confusing my point about TEENAGE nazis who were brought up as CHILDREN fully indoctrinated into Nazi society, with ALL Nazis. It would be completely justified for most Nazis to be hung from the nearest tree.

What about if the state *did* let them go free. What if the state from the killers childhood had continuously told them that murder was brilliant. What if the state were the ones rewarding the murders and even providing the victims and weapons to which to kill them.

At the time, yes. Allied forces shooting these camp guards during the war is totally justified. However, I do believe that anyone who was a child when Nazism took over Germany should have amnesty now decades later.

That's not the point I'm making. I'm saying if you're in Nazi society as a kid. Hitler Youth for 8 years solid. And then join the war machine at 18. You have zero idea of anything else. So, the question of responsibility comes into play for me. Who's at fault. The child/young adult, or the entire state who has for years hammered into them Nazi ideology. The state who has built the camps and has the vacancies for people to slip right into and become a part of the evil machine effortlessly.

Thank you this was always my point. I'm not even sure I 100% even agree with myself. It's just that there is some moral ambiguity to it. The older nazis I don't really have the sympathy for, but the cases of people were literally indoctrinated from the ages of 9+ and then became a part of the Nazi machine at 18. I can understand how they thought these things. They literally didn't know anything else. But a lot of people can't handle that. They're all just evil, apparently.

RelevantAnalyst5989@reddit

Obviously, 99% weren't camp guards. Firstly. There were entry requirements to get into the SS, so that filters it down massively. Secondly, the Nazi state didn't need or have the vacancies for a couple million camp guards, so it was never an even option. They had more than enough operational capacity with the few 10's of thousands

So, the state led indoctrination didn't work on him as a child... cool It still worked on a lot of others. Just like how a lot of child abuse victims become drug addicts... but some don't.
