If you weren't shackled by the golden handcuffs of IT would you still be in this line of work?

One man's trash is another's treasure, as the saying goes. The rote nature led to a certain stressless existence. A simple goal, measured by a simple meteic, speed/accuracy. It was autonomous enough my mind could happily wander and I left each day feeling hardly worse for the wear of 8 hours. I was free to pursue other hobbies and interests. Including, as one may guess based on where we're posting, computer shit.

In this case it was basically being an intermediary between showroom's paper orders and an as400 system. Automation, especially before widescale OCR, wasn't possible, i was the automation.

Best job I ever had was data entry. Go in, put on headphones, type for 8 hours, go home. No afterhour calls, no vendors, no c-suite, just typing. If I could make close to the same amount I'd happily go back.

Nearly all of my users no longer know what the word "Reboot" means.

I feel like this is one of the scisms between helpdesk and sysadmin. Were it up to me we'd have weekend scheduled reboots, but noooooo. People might lose their work... I'm sick of something getting elevated, checking sys uptime, and seeing end-user hasn't rebooted, regardless of claims, in like 2 months.

How come we hear so much from helpdesk about stupid users but not so much from smart users about stupid helpdek?

I always hear from the more skilled users how worthless most of helpdesk is. Even worse for the after hours line. Anyone not doing tier 1 support likely hears this.

Okay, now this isn't me as I'm still slaving away, but I have a coworker who just quit. What's he moving onto? Farming down south. Now, the weird thing about this, this is one of many IT expats I know who ended up on a farm of some form. Maybe this is like the 8th or 9th i've come across in a few decades? Kind of makes me wonder if we get so burnt out we just need to go deal with dirt and livestock. I'd be lying if I said I also didn't feel the pull of working with hands and physical activity, instead of all these immaterial 0's and 1's.

How did you started you're career in IT

Well, it all started with a commodore 64 from childhood. After that I decided I wanted to be a shrink, got my psych degree, ended up in my first office admin type job and the CEO got wind of my life long hobby. 20 years later, here we are. A career fallen into back-asswards.

You can have as many monitors as you want/can on each machine, up to 4 devices. In youre case you'd need a third monitor, but yes it would function as 3 1 monitor devices with 1 keyboard/mouse.

I know it well, having done technical direction for high profile events for many years; brit royal fam, wu tang, apple, chase, blah blah blah. With that said I will not do anything of note with a/v in my current role. Too stressful, even less understood than sys administration, and not something I want tossed on my load due to capability. I'll consult, deal with outside engineers, but that's it.

Jr sys admin at an international comp, maybe 15 yrs ago. Org had showrooms across the states, fancy offerings, interior design stuff. Anyway, each office had a small server and some network gear, nothing major. One of the offices out west was offline so I contacted them. Got ahold of the manager there, a nice older design lady. "Morning ___, we're seeing reports your office is offline and I wanted to check in. I need you to go into the IT closet and tell me if the lights are on." I was not ready for what followed. Sure, I can, she said. What am I looking for? Well, a server ideally. What's a server? Looks kind of like a big desktop. What's a desktop? You know the computer in your desk. I don't have a computer at my desk. Okay, well, let's try something different, can you wiggle the mouse and see if the screen comes on? Sure, what's a mouse? I literally was at a loss, had to make up some excuse to jump off phone and go outside to smoke and contemplate what I was doing with my life.

Literally in early today for an infrastructure project I was tossed in on last minute, while waiting for a vendor database export I was also tossed in on last minute, ans in the middle of another project with our network team, and I still get random people grabbing me about them putting in their password wrong and being AD locked. I'm so used to the stress and constant chaos I didn't even think about it until reading this post... it's not even 10am local and I need a drink.
