MSP pushing UniFi hard over SonicWall..am I overthinking this or does this smell off?

Posted by Ambitious_Active8539@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 262 comments

RCG73@reddit

Can also be that trash talking sonic wall would be just bad form. We do mostly UniFi with some sonic walls where necessary and they aren’t wrong. Management of UniFi is 10x easier than sonocwall. And I’ll agree I wouldn’t touch ssl vpn with a 10 ft pole Basically. Our policy is If you need sonocwall then yes you get sonocwall. If not then no you get UniFi. So many offices are all cloud based and UniFi is fine for those

Manager holding automation hostage

But if you can’t do it properly manually once (first?) then how can you properly automate it? Something seems off enough that I’m withholding judgement of the manager.

Doing the same thing right now. Double check the firmware updates and see how many printers now have oauth. Evaluating that and finding I’m lucky enough that only about 15% can’t. Next step is ok how soon until that 15% refreshes? The alternative will be smtp2go for the rest

My very first ‘management position’ was one where my job was “dear god don’t ever let anyone on the team ever have to communicate with anyone outside the team we don’t need the fallout”. They were all undeniably brilliant, and not even assholes or antagonistic. Just completely socially unaware is the best way I can put it. I learned a lot, both hard and soft skills in that 6 month project but I’d never do it again.

Live and learn, you can’t know everything. Look at it this way $36 is a very cheap way to find out they are a bad business partner. Most problems cost a lot more.

I used to say Network Solutions was the worst registrar I’ve dealt with. Then I met Bluehost. (Been trying to transfer out for 3 months and it keeps rejecting and even their support doesn’t know why). But yeah. Put this stuff on a recurring calendar notice. The number of companies I’ve seen get wrecked by loosing a domain name isn’t zero.

Personally. I started before the modern internet existed. What I’m trying to say is every generation says the same thing, newbies don’t know shit blah blah blah. They said it about me, they said it about you. Give the new folks a chance, they will be fine.

Another post of “back in my day”. It’s the same things I’ve been hearing since I started my career. Back then it was old timers who worked on big iron and memory was measured in bytes. Things change. Don’t discount all the new blood just because they don’t do things the same way we did. Some of it’s just scope. The amount of specialties and knowledge now is 100 times what it was just 15 years ago and it’s only going to continue to expand. Best thing you can ever teach someone is know when you’re an idiot and don’t do something stupid in prod. TLDR it’s gonna be ok, the bits will keep churning as long as the $ keeps flowing

I got fired for asking my manager to point to a specific page in a document she claimed existed.

How do you untangle an IT environment you didn’t build?

Posted by Impressive-Echo8002@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 185 comments

RCG73@reddit

1. Locate your data. Backup and verify your backups work. 2 document everything you possibly can 3. Think about how things Should be 4. Break that should out into a manageable plan that will not break prod. 5. Get buy in (and budget) from management before you change a single fucking thing. If you don’t, nothing will ever actually change

Then your answer is to not have them as a client. Identifying who should not be your customer is just as if not more important than identifying who you want as a customer. Otherwise the saying goes 10% of the customers create 80% of the problems and unless they are 80% of your income …..

First question to ask. Why are they switching from cat5 to 6. I mean yes there are reasons to do so, but do they apply? Typical office tasks won’t be improved by spending that budget on cable. If budget doesn’t matter who cares. But if it’s 6 year old desktops vs cat6?..?

Yes I bring my laptop. And I have no problem taking a few minutes when I have time to answer emails and such, rarely even the quick phone call. But I work somewhere that it goes both ways. It’s Thursday at 11pm and things are slow, hmm see ya tomorrow I’m going to take the dog to the lake. And the most response back I get is have fun, we want to see pictures of the pup! TLDR.
