IBM OS/2 for Windows 3.1

Yep, that's about right. It just sits there doing its job. Until a hardware failure occurs and suddenly you are being asked "why didn't this have a failsafe or backup" and they get really grumpy when you tell them: 1. You outsourced this and never told us. 2. You decided not to pay for support and as such this specialist piece of kit is unsupported because no one apart from the manufacturer really knows how it works. 3. Had you bothered to get us in IT involved we would happily explain the potential business risks and advised on how to proceed, and explained the cost analysis of having a hot spare or at least storage with a mirror or stripe with parity. And after all that it's somehow the fault of the IT department. Me? Bitter?

Boot process: Read boot sector and load bootstrap code. Use that to loaf io.sys Load msdos.sys (other DOSes are okay too) Load device drivers according to config.sys At this point the normally route is: Run command.com, implicitly passing autoexec.bat as a parameter. Command then executes each line in autoexec.bat. Then drops you at a DOS prompt (which is really command.com) You now type "win". win.com loads into nemory, modifies the valies in the interrupt vector table such that any calls to the "dos interrupt" (21h) are nown handled by windows, rather than the aforementioned ms-dos.sys When you exit windows, the original vectors are restored and you are back at command.com. Does that make it clearer?

DOS is still there. Command.com is just a text based user interface. MS-DOS.SYS is still loaded as usual. Without command.com you can't interact with DOS. Windows itself doesn't need it though. It's there for compatability reasons.

Windows did not run on DOS. It just needed any compatible DOS to boot up. It would then adjust the interrupt vector table to point to it's own routines, and, assuming at least 386 enhanced mode, would swap the redundant DOS code out. Being self booting is not a requirement for an OS.

"Windows 3.1 was released", and it is still out there, running wild. Feeding on spinning rust found on Conner Hard Disks, and the remains of slightly newer Seagate platters. It can't boot without DOS, so it strives to keep feeding on whatever 386 or 486 computer hardware it can find. Devouring Cyrix, C&T, ALi, and if pressed, Intel processors. Take care people. For normal x86 or a64 stuff, just an expensive heater out performed by newer, quieter and more efficient stuff. But there are things out there that are not necessarily of use, but worth keeping alive. For historical sake, or to ensure something out there exists to help archive old media or even just knowledge. Though I guess that's moving more towards preservation and away from home la.

ISA Card not being detected

Posted by Glinckey@reddit | vintagecomputing | View on Reddit | 74 comments

PuttingFishOnJupiter@reddit

Thanks for this, I've been pondering it more. I agree, 98 and SE did "probe" hardware to try and get it set up. Especially network cards, IIRC. I've never owned an ISA video capture board, the earliest I have is PCI. OP: Have a search on the wayback machine. Try names of the main chips, plus Zoran (or maybe Xoran - can't remember). Also look for ULead video studio, pretty sure that worked on '98. You could also try Pinnacle Studio DC10, but I'm not sure if there's a "tryware" version of that. Another option is to stick the card into a PC running Linux, and use its various tools to further diagnose the particular card you have. I've found (personal opinion) that Linux - say Rocky or Debian or ubuntu are useful in working out weird hardware. But, disclaimer, I've not tried it with an old ISA card. You might need to go old school with Linux and try an old version of Slackware. Or if you are up for it, use Gentoo to build a suitable Kernel and system for your board. All that being said, what are you trying to achieve? Seems to me like you are hell beant on using some really old hardware to capture analogue video, and there are many ways to do this without using old Operating Systems and legacy hardware.

Can 98 even automatically detect ISA cards? I'm struggling to remember. Could be that you need to manually install the drivers for it and manually specify IRQ and I/O port address and for it to work.
