Embrace the slip-ons and loafers! I’m actually in the process of adjusting my (mostly black goth-ish) wardrobe to accommodate more compression socks, and adding loafers into the mix because I love to travel and any slip-ons are the only shoes I can stand throughout a flight these days.

Gen X. What are the one or two odd things that you have realized you kept on your side table in the bedroom, just in case. No pervy stuff please. We're all adults.

What's a movie you saw when you were too damn young?

I was about 10 and REALLY wanted to watch it based on the HBO previews (because cavepeople!!) and my parents finally let me watch it by myself at the neighbors since we were looking in on their place. I remember I was also assembling my Visible Woman anatomy figure at the same time. Later on I figured out why they preferred not to watch it with me. 😂

I rewatched a bunch of episodes several years ago, and a lot of them are relevant today. My favorite is the “Deities” episode with the religious cult uploading deceased loved ones’ souls into their cloud but at too low of a resolution. 😭

What Was Corporate Life Like in 90s America?

Also since you’re 16 I can’t provide examples but come back in 2 years and I’ll tell you stories. On a more serious note, in some ways this era was preferable because it comprised people who were interested in tech as opposed to…everyone. Nerdy men more often regarded women as their peers, but once all the “normies” jumped in there was increasing dismissiveness and sometimes even hostility toward women. I now see this cycle through every several years, and in my experience so far with Gen Z men they seem to be on the right track as far as how they regard women, and understand the sensibility of Gex X. I had a Gen Z student submit a VR assignment, and within his landscape he included a Rickroll! I gave him all the bonus points. 😊

Bands or Solo Artists You Regret Not Seeing Live in Their Prime?

I wonder if part of that is “oh I’m not quite feeling like going out but they’re local so I’ll get to see them.” I’ve done that, especially living in NYC because you know they will be back. A few years ago I saw The Soft Moon on the last tour and then not long afterward Luis Vasquez passed away. I was thankful to have seen that final show, and now I make every effort to see bands I love even if I’m low on energy.

I didn’t necessarily care about PF and would never would have otherwise sought out tickets, but I was with some school friends in Köln in 1989 and one of them had the idea to get last-minute tickets to that show on the tour. It was INCREDIBLE. And…this was in spring of ‘89, so I saw them in WEST Germany. :)

I’m in a certain women’s group and they often say seggs. They tend to be on the younger and / or normie side, so they would spawn blank thought bubbles if I explained why it makes me think of Edie the Egg Lady in Pink Flamingos, or just some traumatizing sex with smashed hard boiled eggs.

I’m in my early 50s and feel the same. Since I’ve lived in NYC apartments for the last 30 years this feeling may be even more entrenched. To make things even more confusing, my neighborhood has transformed from an environment with immigrants, industrial lofts, and plentiful music / dance venues to a glass tower-dominant landscape. This has attracted people in their 30s who live in athleisure wear and carry golf clubs. The other new demographic look as if they stepped out of a Getty stock photo search using the term “wellness”(obviously I could move further out where my taste would be more aligned with the surroundings, but I have a great deal despite the gentrification around me). All I can do is hang on!

Are any GenXers unable to talk on the phone with strangers?

Posted by DeadBy2050@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 541 comments

Perfect_Distance434@reddit

Although I do have to prepare for calls even with loved ones, I’ll put off a task that involves a stranger phone conversation for days, even weeks. The latter generally involves an exchange of information, and I’ll do ANYTHING to avoid having to spell out my street address and a series of account, DOB, etc numbers several times (just to make sure they have correctly recorded it!). Then you’re put on hold and you can’t really do anything else because what if you’re not paying attention and accidentally drop the call, then you risk enduring another round of a phone tree! Or, you ask about making an appointment and they just rattle off some random dates and act surprised you can’t immediately pick one without carefully consulting your calendars. Perhaps you’re trying to rectify an issue, and in addition to the tediousness of the call itself you’re stressing out about an answer that will frustrate you even more.

I know that everyone varies in how their bodies respond to certain treatments, and it’s really frustrating! As far as weight can estrogen is “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” since est regulates metabolism via the hypothalamus, but it also can draw the fat toward the stomach area. And with testosterone, a certain amount will always aromatize into more estrogen which varies according to factors such as age, body mass, etc. I wonder if the pellet testosterone aromatization in your case disproportionately increased your estrogen based on your physical characteristics? Given the still relative lack of research in this area, I think many of us are still on a troubleshooting “journey,” and we may just need to figure out what works for each of us individually. I’m curious about how I might fare with the pellet so I definitely want to at least try it. I met with my doc yesterday and once again lamented the libido issue, and she said “that will require testosterone.” The only reason I haven’t asked for a cream is that she is already very liberal about her meno / anti-aging approach, and will give me anything I need (also offers overlap adhd meds if my psych isn’t available), so I don’t want to push her. I know I’ll have to at least try the pellet, and if it doesn’t work overall I can discuss other possible testosterone options.

And even when on HRT the new estrogen may not make you overly accommodating unlike the “original.” A comment in another discussion accurately describes the estrogen of your past as “beer goggles,” and when removed you realize how much bullshit you’ve tolerated up until the present.

We didn’t have one where I lived in the ‘80s, but did receive the catalog for years before I finally stepped foot into a store when I was about 16 or 17. One thing that stood out to me and I truly appreciated was that they made cute underwire (“adult”) bras for A cups. Every other department store line started at a B cup, and I finally felt seen!
